4 Timberline’s new Winter Entrance on the way up! Five years have passed since the Friends took the initiative of solving the riddle of “if, when and how” the lingering question of pursuing a new winter entrance for Timberline Lodge should be approached. Five years during which the exciting design by NE Works (now “rhiza A+B”) emerged from an international competition and during which public musings about the heart and soul of this seasonal companion of the Lodge did create enough interest to help spark a fundraising response of true communal proportions. This response during a time of economic downturn confirmed once more the affection of Oregonians for Timberline Lodge, but also reflected the enthusiasm this visionary design had stirred. As of May, 2009, $773,000 as a combination of cash and in-kind services have been raised to finance the construction of the two stages of the Winter Entrance. Hood Ski Patrol Marge Wintermute Joachim Grube is inspecting the work before a meeting with the Architects and IMD. construction of the concrete steps and landings at the main entrance, together with new foundations, started in late summer of 2008 and was accomplished mainly through in-kind services by a coalition of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers under the coordination of Hoffman Construction, closely monitored by engineers of USFS. This first stage of the project was completed in November, 2008. The manufacturing of the second stage, the twelve aluminum arches, each assembled from three components covered with translucent polycarbonate panels, started at the workshop of IMD (Innovative Metal Design LLC) in July, 2008. Due to timing sequences in the fundraising drive, work had to be suspended in October, 2008 and was resumed in April, 2009, following the release of a $125,00 grant by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. Work will be completed in the course of July. The components will be transported on two flat-bed trailers, purchased by RLK, to a designated USFS storage site near Rhododendron. The assembly at the site is scheduled for the second half of September, in time for the dedication during the Annual Meeting of members of FOT, on October 3rd at Timberline Lodge. They reveal the full scope of high-tech detailing of the lean aluminum profiles supporting the polycarbonate skin, designed to withstand snow loads of 720 pounds per square foot. One gets a sense of how well this elegant, seemingly weightless structure will connect with the venerable stone façade of Timberline Lodge. Get ready to experience it in October.
