FERTILITY ROAD NEWS The latest developments from the fertility world EARLY MENOPAUSE ON THE RISE Infertility specialists are seeing an increase in the number of women approaching them with premature ovarian failure, or better known as menopause. The average age at which women go through menopause is 51 years, however, about one per cent of women experience early menopausal symptoms before the age of 45. Premature ovarian failure is mainly caused when antibodies develop against the thyroid or the pancreas, when there is a family history of this, or is sometimes, brought about due to surgery performed on the ovaries. Though the uterus can be restored to its normal size in a few years through rigorous hormone therapy, conception is only possible with the help of a donor egg. However, there is still a ray of hope for those who want to enjoy the feeling of delivering their biological child, after their first pregnancy with the donor egg as there have been rare cases where the menstrual cycle has kick started, helping for conception to occur naturally. SITTING IN THE HOT SEAT A chair in the reception of a Milton Keynes hotel is being blamed after seven women fell pregnant in the space of just 18 months. Four of the women have already given birth, all to boys, after sitting in the blue chair. Suspicious staff now avoid the “fertility chair” as they believe it possesses the power to make women pregnant! JAPANESE RESEARCHERS SUCCESSFULLY GROW SPERM IN LABORATORY Japanese researchers have successfully produced mature, functional sperm in a laboratory dish for the first time – a feat that has eluded reproductive biologists for more than half a century. The scientists met this challenge with mice, successfully culturing mouse testes cells, inducing them to cultivate sperm, and then using this sperm to reproduce seemingly normal offspring. Their novel methodology and results may have several benefits in clinical applications in humans, particularly in the area of male infertility. “An in vitro system of mammalian spermatogenesis has never been established in our history,” said Takehiko Ogawa, a reproductive biologist at Yokohama National University in Japan. Since every cell in our body relies on many complex chemical signals to function, our ability to produce mature cells in laboratories is, to some extent, a matter of being able to compensate for these signals by adding or subtracting different factors in the dish – like mixing a biological cocktail. The signal requirements vary for each organ and cell type, and so biologists attempting to recreate processes like sperm production end up focussing much of their energy on mixing and matching different supplementary products. Spermatogenesis – the process where immature, neonatal germ cells develop into functioning sperm cells – is a long and complex procedure, lasting throughout most of adulthood. Reaching complete maturation itself is a process that usually takes more than a month in most mammals. Because sperm development takes so long, scientists haven’t ever been able to produce the precise laboratory conditions that would be needed to support the entire process. 06 fertility road | may - june
