of All Pasha in Janina, and the activity of the Suliots.<br />
Here the struggle had not yet assumed the aspect of a<br />
purely Greek and Christian revolt; and the Suliots<br />
under the brave Marko Botzares had formed an alliance<br />
against the Ottomans, not only with the Greek<br />
captains of Armatoli, but with those of the Albanian<br />
Mussulman chiefs who were devoted to the cause of<br />
Ali Pasha. Together they<br />
had made considerable<br />
headway against the Turks, and had all but conquered<br />
the important town of Arta, when rumours of the massacre<br />
of Mussulmans at Vrachori reached the Albanian<br />
chiefs, who, realising now the true nature of the revolt,<br />
threw in their lot with their co-religionists. Although<br />
this rendered any active policy against the Turks impossible,<br />
West Hellas remained, pending<br />
the fall of<br />
Ali Pasha and the reduction of the Suliots, in the<br />
hands of the Greeks.<br />
By the end of the year <strong>1821</strong>, then, the Hellenic<br />
cause was everywhere triumphant. The Turks, it is<br />
true, still occupied the important island of Euboea, and,<br />
on the mainland, held the Acropolis and the fortress<br />
of Lepanto; while, in the Peloponnese, Nauplia,<br />
Patras, Coron, and Modon still defied all the efforts<br />
of the Greeks to take them, and the castles commanding<br />
the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth remained in<br />
Ottoman hands. "With these exceptions, however, all
