chief, Ali took the first step in his upward course<br />
by making himself master of his native town of<br />
Tepeleni; and the method used was highly characteristic<br />
of the man, and of the social condition of the<br />
country. Dressing up a goat in his cloak and fez, he<br />
gagged the animal to prevent its bleating, and laid it<br />
under a tree, at a place he had been accustomed to frequent.<br />
He then despatched a trusty messenger to<br />
Tepeleni, who was to act the traitor, and tell his enemies<br />
that the hated Ali was close at hand, asleep and<br />
unsuspecting.<br />
The chance was not to be neglected.<br />
Seizing their guns they hurried out and, from a safe<br />
distance, poured a volley into the sleeping body of the<br />
supposed Ali. Having watched with exultation the<br />
death quiver of the unhappy goat, they returned to the<br />
town, and proceeded to celebrate their prowess with<br />
feasting and revelry. In the midst of their merriment,<br />
and while they were completely off their guard, Ali,<br />
with his trusty followers, suddenly fell upon them, and<br />
massacred them all.<br />
