ooks are cool!
The age suggestions for the books in this catalogue are only indicative.
India has always been a land of storytellers. Told
by traditional katha vachaks, village storytellers and
one’s favourite grandmother, we have all heard
stories that have taught us our values, our morals,
our culture. “Katha” or the narrative is a special
legacy that continues to exist in our country as a
rich and fascinating tradition, moving with grace and
felicity from the oral traditions to the written texts,
from the heard word to the read.
Katha endeavours to spread the joy of reading,
knowing, and living amongst adults and children,
the common reader and the neo-literate. It started
its reading programmes in 1988 with Tamasha!,
a children’s magazine for first generation schoolgoers.
Following suit was the Katha I Love Reading
campaign aimed at honing the reading habits of
children and creating a level playing field for all.
Through cooperative action and activism, it brings
together parents, teachers and others who are keen
to increase our children’s engagement with reading.
Katha’s various reading initiatives bring the flavours
and colours of India alive to children across the socioeconomic,
linguistic and cultural divides. Helming
the reading initiatives is Katha’s Active-Story-
Based-Learning methodology, a special educational
framework that pushes the envelope of traditional
knowledge. It helps create reading interest or
RUCHI in children.
Katha’s children’s publishing programme bolsters the
reading initiatives by producing books that create
space for a culturally distinctive children’s literature
and helps children better understand the multilingual
country and world they live in.

The books are light and easy, and could well entice many children to the charms of reading. — DNA
The stories are original, refreshing and are narrated imaginatively. They are aptly supported by illustrations by Sonal
Panse. Panse’s illustrations look like pencil drawings. Something a child can immediately identify with. Use of bright
yet earthy colours like green and brown make it very friendly to the eye. The design too is innovatively done. Notice a
speech bubble that doubles up as a white wooly nimbus cloud ... Nice. — Buzzintown.com
I like such books which encourage young readers to have compassion for everybody and everything around them and
to cultivate sensitivity towards the feelings of others. Also, it brings out a very subtle message that a heaven is actually
a state when we learn to appreciate and enjoy everything that we observe, experience and do, no matter how small or
big, significant or insignificant that thing really is. If it gives us pleasure, the same becomes our heaven.
Simple illustrations by Paula Bossio using mostly pencil drawings are lovely and I am sure the drawings will motivate
Geeta Dharmarajan has a unique way of adding life even to the most boring subjects. If you read Earthsong, you’ll
realize it’s not the environmental studies book you must have read in school. Or maybe it is, just a better one, a much
better one. The book opens with a little poem, which almost sounds like a version of the “All things are bright and
beautiful” song you learnt in school. — The New Indian Express
What strikes us most about Mamang Dai’s The Sky Queen is its bright colour illustrations that are sprawled across the
30 odd pages of the book. The author weaves out a fairytale, about a civilisation called Kojum-Koja, and how on the
occasion of the Pime, tragedy befell them. The land of the Kojum-Koja is devastated by floods and gales, and is wiped
off from the face of the Earth. The second part of the book witnesses the rise of Nyanyi Myete, the lady of the Kojum
family, out of the ruins. With her sweet songs and music, she once again breathes life into the world.
The illustrations in the book are done in bright colours, mainly bold pastels. The gaiety and festivity held during the
course of the story, are well depicted through the illustrations, along with the costumes and jewellery of the north east
Indian community. Mamang spins an adorable folk tale around the bounty of nature, and paints a pretty picture
through her pen, of tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. — The New Indian Express
What Shape is an Elephant?
Rumi | Art by Feeroozeh Golmohammadi
What shape is an elephant? Is it round or crooked; is it straight or is it
curved? These are questions that go much deeper than they appear.
The story is a translation in prose of the original verse by Rumi, the great
spiritual leader of Iran. With this picture book, Katha introduces Rumi to
children for the first time in India.
The book is made lively with colourful illustrations by Feroozeh Golmohammadi, an Iranian artist. The paintings
convey a poetic rhythm, with the illustrations, speaking as much as the words. The book introduces Rumi to the
readers and is simple and interesting in style. — The Indian Express
Helping you to step into another magical world is the Persian poet and philosopher, Rumi’s “What shape is an
elephant?” Indian kids no doubt are familiar with the story. It is the story of people trying to identify the shape of an
elephant in the dark and coming out with hilarious interpretations. But what makes this particular book special is
the exquisite illustrations by Feeroozeh Golmohammadi. The brilliant innovation of the folded frieze is a bonus that
would make one long to frame it as a treasured tapestry. And it is easy to imagine children poring over the pictures,
living in the old world charm. — Young World, The Hindu
A story about truth and honesty compromised when material
well-being arrives. The story showcases with sensitivity the exit of
humane values with the advent of material wealth and prosperity.
While the charcoal sketches bring to life the humble life and household of Raghunath, the story, originally written in
Bengali, is about the decline in human values as one falls a prey to greed. As the prologue to the book describes, it is a
story “exploring truth, falsehood and everything in between.” — The Hindu
A stranger with an unkempt look walks up to the grocery shop of Raghunath on a bleak afternoon of ceaseless drizzle.
“You can call me Satyadas”, he says, and he will make Raghunath, as well as the readers, rediscover certain painful
truths about human nature. Illustrated by Neeta Gangopadhya, this slim book is a must-read for the young and the old
alike. — The Telegraph
Nine picturesque tales that you’ll never forget from the master storyteller. Though a painter, Abanindranath Tagore
loved writing for children. Perhaps that is why his uncle Rabindranath Tagore had urged him to write. When
Abanindranath finally did, these unforgettable stories were born. Now, for the first time in English from Katha.
— School Planet
Abanindranath Tagore's Rajkahini is a series of tales about kings, kingship and valour. The stories also prove that
kingship isn't just about grandeur and luxury. He was a painter and perhaps that's why his novel at most parts seem to
be word pictures of forts, battles and kings of long ago. — Young World, The Hindu
