A Hidden Room of Natural Gems<br />

หองที่ประดับประดาดวยอัญมณีแหงธรรมชาติ<br />

Tucked away inside the Dusit Palace is a wondrous<br />

space glistening with iridescent shades of emerald<br />

and sapphire. One might mistaken them for<br />

jewels, but to the contrary, they are much more<br />

organic. The Beetle Wing Room is unlike any<br />

place on earth.<br />

At the centre stands a magnifi cent chandelier<br />

in the image of a swan and Naga King, created<br />

with wings of the Sternocera Aequisignata<br />

(Malang Thup) beetle. Panels of woven wings<br />

and Lipao vines adorn the walls. Visitors will also<br />

get a chance to see masterpieces ornamented<br />

with wings, precious metals and gemstones<br />

created by artisans of the Queen Sirikit Institute.<br />

These detailed works demand extreme patience<br />

and care. To ensure vibrancy, only wings from<br />

beetles who have lived through a natural life<br />

cycle can be used, and these are hand-selected<br />

further to ensure complete symmetry of colours.<br />

Furthermore, this process prevents the extinction<br />

of the beetles allowing them to populate in<br />

Thailand for future generations. The Beetle<br />

Wing Room is amongst many other unique<br />

spaces dedicated to traditional craftsmanship<br />

and decorative arts at the Arts of the Kingdom<br />

Museum in Bangkok.<br />

สวัสดีครับ<br />

ผมขอตอนรับทุกทานสูสายการบินไทยสมายล ที่พรอมให<br />

บริการผูโดยสารทุกทานดวยรอยยิ้มตลอดการเดินทาง<br />

ในเดือนพฤษภาคมนี ้ นิตยสารวีสมายล (We<strong>Smile</strong>)<br />

ยังคงเต็มเปยมไปดวยเนื้อหาสาระความบันเทิงอยางครบถวน<br />

เมื่อวันที ่ 10 เมษายนที่ผานมา สายการบินไทยสมายล<br />

ไดเปดเที่ยวบินปฐมฤกษจากสนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ ไปยัง<br />

นราธิวาส ซึ่งเสนทางดังกลาวไดรับการตอบรับเปนอยางดี<br />

และเพื่อใหสอดคลองกับนโยบายการสงเสริมใหประเทศไทย<br />

เปนศูนยกลางการเดินทางของภูมิภาคเมื่อเขาสูประชาคม<br />

เศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (AEC) เราไดเพิ่มเที่ยวบินออกจากสนามบิน<br />

สุวรรณภูมิในสวนของเสนทางจากกรุงเทพฯ ไปยังเชียงใหม<br />

ภูเก็ต และขอนแกน จากเดิมที่ใหบริการจากเฉพาะสนามบิน<br />

ดอนเมือง เพื่ออํานวยความสะดวกสบายใหกับผูโดยสาร<br />

ที่ตองการตอเที่ยวบิน และยังเปนการเพิ่มทางเลือกใหกับ<br />

ผูโดยสารอีกดวย<br />

นอกจากนี้ ไทยสมายลไดมีการปรับรูปโฉมของ THAI<br />

<strong>Smile</strong> Mobile Application ซึ่งจะชวยเพิ่มความสะดวกใหกับ<br />

ผูโดยสารยิ่งขึ ้นไมวาจะเปนการตรวจสอบตารางบิน การซื้อ<br />

บัตรโดยสาร การเช็คอินสําหรับสนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ สนามบิน<br />

ดอนเมือง สนามบินอุบลราชธานี และสนามบินเชียงใหม และ<br />

เปนชองทางเพื่อรับขอมูลขาวสารและโปรโมชั่นตางๆ กอนใคร<br />

อีกทั้งยังเพิ่มชองทางการชําระคาบัตรโดยสารผานเคานเตอร<br />

เซอรวิส และชองทางธนาคารตางๆ เปนตน<br />

แมจะตองเจอกับการแขงขันที่สูงขึ้น สายการบินไทยสมายล<br />

มีความเชื่อมั่นวาการเติบโตของผูโดยสารจากประชาคม<br />

เศรษฐกิจอาเซียนจะเปนนิมิตหมายอันดีที่จะชวยใหสายการบิน<br />

ของเราพัฒนาไปอีกขั้น สายการบินไทยสมายลพรอมที่จะ<br />

was well received, as we endeavor to promote<br />

Economic Community (AEC). Flights to Chiang Mai,<br />

Phuket and Khon Kaen which formerly left only<br />

from Don Mueang International Airport, now leave<br />

from Suvarnabhumi Airport for the convenience<br />

of our passengers.<br />

In addition, THAI <strong>Smile</strong> has updated our THAI<br />

<strong>Smile</strong> Mobile Application. It is now easier than<br />

ever to book tickets and check-in via your mobile<br />

devices, whether you are in Suvarnabhumi<br />

Airport, Don Mueang International Airport,<br />

Ubonratchathani International Airport or Chiang<br />

Mai International Airport. It will also keep you<br />

updated with important information changes and<br />

new promotions. There are also better ways to<br />

pay for your fares with a counter service option<br />

and connections to many banks.<br />

Despite increasing competition, Thai <strong>Smile</strong><br />

Airways is confi dent that the growth of our<br />

passenger traffi c from our neighbouring Asian<br />

Economic Community is a good omen that will take<br />

Spanning six metres long, the intricate teak<br />

wood bas-relief panels depict King Rama II’s<br />

poetic narrative of Sangthong. One side displays<br />

the historic settings of Sangthong, humans and<br />

earthly animals while the other panel follows the<br />

theme with mythical animals of Himavan such<br />

as the garuda, naga and kinorn. Both panels<br />

share the same centerpiece, a palace which links<br />

the two sides with detailed open fretwork. The<br />

carvings, created by the Queen Sirikit Institute<br />

artisans, took two years and seven months to<br />

complete. This breathtaking masterpiece and<br />

many other unique spaces dedicated to traditional<br />

craftsmanship and decorative arts can be viewed<br />

at the Arts of the Kingdom Museum.<br />

ฉากจําหลักไมที่สลักขึ้นเปนรูปนูน<br />

ต่ําอยางวิจิตรที่มีขนาดยาวถึง 6 เมตรนี้เลาเรื่อง<br />

ราวของสังขทองตามบทพระราชนิพนธในพระบาท<br />

สมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหลานภาลัย โดยฉากดานหนา<br />

นั้นเปนฉากของเรื่องสังขทองที่มีทั้งมนุษยและสัตว<br />

ปรากฏอยูรวมกันอยางกลมกลืน สวนอีกดานหนึ่ง<br />

เปนเรื่องของหมูสัตวหิมพานต ทั้งครุฑ นาคและ<br />

กินนร ใจกลางของฉากจําหลักไมนี้เปนที่ตั้งของ<br />

ภาพพระราชวังที่ฉลุอยางงดงามใหมองเห็นได<br />

เหมือนกันจากทั้ง 2 ฝง ชางฝมือของสถาบันสิริกิติ์<br />

ใชเวลาถึง 2 ป 7 เดือนในการรังสรรคผลงานชิ้น<br />

นี้ใหเสร็จสิ้น ทานสามารถชมฉากจําหลักไมซึ่ง<br />

นับเปนผลงานชิ้นเอก รวมถึงหองอื่นๆที่จัดแสดง<br />

ผลงานหัตถศิลปและของตกแตงแบบดั้งเดิมไดที่<br />

MOST MEMORABLE TRIP<br />

Last year for New Year's Day I had the opportunity to go to Taiwan. I was so impressed<br />

with the food, natural surroundings, museums and kind people. Taiwan also has cute<br />

things everywhere, their Jimmy Liao metro station is full of drawings. The highlight of<br />

the trip was the New Year countdown. I choose a spot with a view of Taipei 101, which<br />

was one of the world’s tallest buildings. When midnight came there were fi reworks<br />

launched from all around the structure. It was the most beautiful and amazing display<br />

I’ve ever seen.<br />

AN EXCITING ADVENTURE<br />

When I was an exchange student in Norway, I learned how to ski.<br />

My friends invited me on a trip to see the Stubai Glacier in Austria.<br />

We decided to go on a diffi cult trail. As we continued on, the area<br />

was fi lled with small hills and I felt that if I kept skiing I might get<br />

hurt. So I carefully took off my skis. As I walked, the sky kept<br />

getting darker. I was worried about when I would get back, it was<br />

also very cold. Luckily, after a while an area ranger drove by and I<br />

caught a ride back.<br />

If you step back 1000 years ago, the city<br />

of Chaiya or Surat was a major maritime<br />

superpower in Southeast Asia. It was a<br />

commercial hub and a centre for Buddhism.<br />

This is why you can still find many<br />

ancient buddhist stupas (chedi) in Surat<br />

today, including ‘Chedi Wat Kaeow’, ‘Chedi<br />

Wat Weing’, ‘Chedi Wat Long’, and<br />

‘Chedi Wat Phra Borom That’ which contains<br />

relics of the Buddha. These artefacts<br />

hold great significance for Buddhists in<br />

Thailand and neighbouring countries.<br />

Aside from visiting the historical sites and<br />

remnants of Surat’s prosperous past, it<br />

is popular for local tourists to pay homage<br />

to the religious relics. In fact, there is a<br />

local saying that, “one has not seen<br />

Surat Thani (Surat Province) unless they<br />

have seen the relics.”<br />

However, today Surat Thani does not<br />

only attract cultural tourists, but also<br />

those who are looking for nature. Surat<br />

Thani is known as ‘The Province of a<br />

Hundred Islands’. It has become a paradise<br />

for locals as well as ‘snowbirds’ foreigners<br />

who have escaped the cold wind for sun,<br />

beautiful beaches and crystal blue seas.<br />

Although the province’s official name<br />

might not be known internationally, mention<br />

Koh Phangan or Koh Samui to travellers<br />

and they are sure to recognise it.<br />

Each of the 108 islands have unique<br />

attractions, making island hopping a<br />

favoured activity. You might start by flying<br />

to the city of Surat Thani before<br />

catching a ferry to Koh Samui in order to<br />

rest for a few nights in a nice resort. Keep<br />

a day free and book a package trip to<br />

visit Mu Koh Ang Thong Marine National<br />

Park and see pristine Koh Wua Talap and<br />

Koh Mae Ko with its famous laguna, before<br />

ending your trip with a party on Koh<br />

Phangan. If you’re looking for peace and<br />

quiet, take a boat ride and spend a few<br />

nights at Koh Tan, a small 7.5 square<br />

kilometre island near Koh Samui. With so<br />

much to choose from, the province has<br />

Surat Thani does not only have beaches,<br />

to the west side of the province is Khao<br />

Sok National Park. Rich in natural jungles,<br />

the park is referred to as “Rainforest<br />

Mountains”. The tropical forest is large,<br />

taking up 461,712.5 rai (182,546 acres) of land,<br />

and borders many conservation areas. This<br />

includes Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary,<br />

Khlong Yan Wildlife Sanctuary, Khlong<br />

Nakha Wildlife Sanctuary, Sri Phang Nga<br />

National Park and Kaeng Krung National Park.<br />

People call Khao Sok the “Guilin of<br />

Thailand” due to the limestone monoliths<br />

that rise from its lakes. The picture you will<br />

often see on postcards are of these natural<br />

wonders, along with floating huts that<br />

border the famous reservoir. But Khao Sok<br />

should also be praised for its biodiversity.<br />

In addition to rare native species, you can<br />

also find the Rafflesia, which is Thailand’s<br />

largest flower and unique palm trees.<br />

Khao Sok is also famous for having a large<br />

population of four very endangered animals,<br />

including the fea’s muntjac (barking deer),<br />

tapir, leopard and clouded leopard.<br />

The word ‘Mandalay’ re-entered popular<br />

culture with Robbie Williams’ Eternity<br />

Album 10 years ago. The song ‘The Road<br />

to Mandalay’ featured a music video shot in<br />

France, effectively misguiding a generation<br />

into thinking Mandalay was in Europe.<br />

Literary buffs may note that Williams’<br />

song was inspired by the poem ‘Mandalay’<br />

from Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle<br />

Book. The former capital of Myanmar was<br />

also the backdrop of the novel ‘Burmese<br />

Days’ by George Orwell and ‘The Glass Palace’<br />

by Amitav Ghosh. But no matter which<br />

book or by whom, Mandalay will forever<br />

be associated with spiritual elegance, and<br />

a wistful yearning for time long elapsed.<br />

Mandalay is unlike other cities in Burma,<br />

(today’s Myanmar). While Yangon received<br />

economic growth and became a modern<br />

model for the country, Mandalay to the<br />

north seemingly maintains a traditional<br />

way of life and culture. The most “modern”<br />

building found in Mandalay is the airport.<br />

Since the country opened its doors just a<br />

few years ago, Mandalay International<br />

Airport became its main transit hub. The<br />

airport rests at the heart of the country,<br />

and Mandalay is a city that sits on the<br />

crossroads for all visitors. Since Yangon<br />

is located to the far south, Mandalay rose

The word “former capital” as well as a<br />

nostalgic atmosphere may make one think<br />

that Mandalay is ancient, but Mandalay is<br />

younger than Bangkok by decades. It was<br />

founded in 1857 when Mindon Min, the<br />

penultimate king of Burma moved the<br />

capital city, believing in a prophecy that<br />

2,400 years after Buddha’s death, there<br />

would be the creation of a city that serves<br />

as the centre of Buddhism. He choose<br />

Mandalay Hill, situated on the east bank<br />

of the Irrawaddy river. Despite it’s relatively<br />

young age, like any big city, Mandalay has<br />

survived many historic events. After the<br />

death of King Mindon Min in 1879,<br />

Mandalay and the country of Burma was<br />

forced into dark years. His daughter Queen<br />

Supayalat and King Thibaw Min—known<br />

ของกษัตริย์สองพระองค์สุดท้ายของพม่าแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่<br />

ใจกลางเมืองมัณฑะเลย์ และสร้างขึ้นตามผังภูมิ<br />

จักรวาลแบบพราหมณ์ปนพุทธโดยสมมติให้เป็น<br />

สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 กองทัพญี่ปุ่นได้ใช้พระราชวังแห่ง<br />

Anyone who has read the book ‘The<br />

Glass Palace’ by Amitav Ghosh, would<br />

make the Mandalay Palace their first stop.<br />

The layout was created by Brahmans, who<br />

modeled it after the centre of the world.<br />

The area is 413 hectares, surrounded by<br />

2-kilometre-long walls on all four sides,<br />

which is then surrounded again by a molt.<br />

Each wall had three doors, and each door<br />

was decorated by a zodiac symbol. When<br />

the British colonised Burma this palace<br />

was renamed Fort Dufferin. During World<br />

War II, the Japanese used the palace to<br />

store their supplies. As a result, the area<br />

was heavily bombed by the allies. Only the<br />

royal mint and watch tower survived. The<br />

buildings that tourists see today were<br />

restored in the year 1989, with materials<br />

changed to concrete and metal. However,<br />

the outstanding Shwenandaw Monastery<br />

is still in its original teak form.<br />

Because Mindon Min had the intention<br />

to create the centre of Buddhism, Mandalay<br />

is graced with beautiful temples. Tourists<br />

may plan an early day to see the washing<br />

of the Buddha statue at Mahamuni Temple<br />

(known as the Mahamuni Buddha), a<br />

sacred image in Mandalay. The statue was<br />

originally from Dhannavati, in the northern<br />

Rakhine region, and rumours of its beauty<br />

caused many attempted pillagings. King<br />

Bodawpaya finally succeeded in removing<br />

the Mahamuni from Rakhine and enshrining<br />

it in Mandalay. With the belief that the<br />

Mahamuni Buddha is alive, every morning<br />

at half past four, the statue is cleaned with<br />

water and Tanaka bark perfume, donated<br />

by believers. Because of this, its bronze<br />

face is luminescent and clear.

เสียกอน เจดียมิงกุนจึงกลายเปนดั่งอนุสรณสถานให<br />

รําลึกถึงศรัทธาอันยิ่งใหญของชนชั้นปกครองในอดีต<br />

ถัดจากเจดียมิงกุนไมไกลนักเปนที่ตั้งของเจดียชินพิวมิน<br />

(Hsinbyume Pagoda) ที่ไดรับฉายาวา ‘ทัชมาฮาล<br />

แหงลุมอิรวดี’ เนื่องจากเปนเจดียที่พระเจาบากะยีดอว<br />

พระราชนัดดาในพระเจาปดุงทรงโปรดใหสรางเพื่อ<br />

ที่สุดคงหนีไมพนเนินเขามัณฑะเลย ที่นั่นเองที่คุณจะ<br />

ไดเห็นเมืองทั้งเมืองเปลงประกายเรืองรอง ตองแสง<br />

Outside the city is Amarapura, known<br />

for the Mingun Pahtodawgyi. This stupa<br />

was to be much larger than the ancient<br />

pagodas of both Bagan and Siam. The<br />

construction of this building which took<br />

over 50,000 slaves, only lasted 7 years<br />

before King Bodawpaya passed away. It<br />

now stands unfi nished, but is a reminder<br />

of the great ruling class of the past. Nearby<br />

is the Hsinbyume Pagoda, which is known<br />

as the “Taj Mahal of the the Irrawaddy”.<br />

It was built by King Bagyidaw, for his fi rst<br />

consort, Princess Hsinbyume who passed<br />

while birthing their child.<br />

Aside from beautiful places of worship,<br />

Mandalay is famous for its sunsets. In<br />

Amanpura, stop to photograph the day’s<br />

end at U Bein Bridge, the longest teak<br />

wood bridge in the world, which spans<br />

1.2 kilometres. At dusk, visitors can see<br />

the people of Mandalay walking slowly<br />

across it as they have done for generations.<br />

If you are so inclined, take a walk up<br />

Mandalay Hill to get a glimpse of the<br />

sparkling city as the sun dips below the<br />

horizon. And as the shadows grow<br />

longer, the city’s true enchantment<br />

reveals itself. Beguiling strings of lights<br />

guide believers in the night, tenaciously<br />

keeping alive a culture once hidden from<br />

แต่ในอดีตเมื่อหนึ่งร้อยห้าสิบปีก่อน รอยยิ้มของคน<br />

ไทยยังดึงดูดช่างภาพหนุ่ม จอห์น ทอมสัน ให้มาเยือน<br />

Thailand for themselves, but few<br />

know that over a hundred and fifty years<br />

ago, young photographer John Thomson<br />

was one of the first to capture a true Thai<br />

smile. His travels not only exposed the<br />

west to exotic eastern culture, but also<br />

became a page in the history of Siam<br />

(modern day Thailand), one preserved so<br />

clearly that it would be used for generations<br />

to reflect on the past.<br />

Our story starts in 1862, when Scottish<br />

He was just 23 years old. This began<br />

his observations of people in the region<br />

and his attraction to their culture. In the<br />

next three years, which coincided with<br />

the reign of His Majesty King Mongkut<br />

(King Rama IV), Thomson decided to sell<br />

his studio in Singapore and take a passenger<br />

steamer to Bangkok. As soon as<br />

he reached the capital city, Thomson<br />

requested royal permission from His Majesty<br />

King Mongkut to continue his photography,<br />

and was granted an audience.<br />

He became the first photographer to have<br />

access to the Royal Court, and captured<br />

ceremonies and traditions that were uncommon<br />

for even people of that era, such<br />

as images of young Prince Chulalongkorn<br />

(son of His Majesty King Mongkut and<br />

soon to be King Rama V), the intricate<br />

royal ceremonial offerings made by the<br />

court, or rare funeral images of the King’s<br />

brother, Prince Chutamani (who was titled<br />

‘Second King’ and known as King Pinklao.)<br />

These images became invaluable at chronicling<br />

a bygone era, and most importantly<br />

are now evidence that academics still<br />

use today as references for their studies<br />

of history and cultural arts.<br />

Even more remarkable was Thomson’s<br />

use of technology. He was versed in both<br />

full plate and stereo cameras and applied<br />

a ‘wet-collodion’ method which produced<br />

negatives on glass, giving amazingly sharp<br />

results. However, the processes that are<br />

used to make such stunning images were<br />

not without risks. Not only was glass at<br />

constant risk of breaking, but the chemicals<br />

must be applied only a few minutes<br />

before photos are taken, and everything<br />

was to be done in dark tents to prevent<br />

light from reacting to the images. Thus,<br />

a team of assistants were always on hand<br />

to help haul the hazardous chemicals,<br />

fragile glass and heavy tents. They toiled<br />

to set things up with great precision and<br />

timing.<br />

In 1871, when Thomson returned to<br />

Europe with portraits of King Rama IV and<br />

the images of Siam, he became a bridging<br />

borders. To sum up the magnitude of his<br />

contributions to arts and diplomacy, perhaps<br />

it’s best to use the well known<br />

phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand<br />

Organic coffee is a big deal among healthy<br />

and environmental-friendly consumers. The<br />

word ‘organic’ not only crosses out insecticide,<br />

but all chemical substances, even fertilisers!<br />

Organic coffee, consequently is known to be<br />

expensive. One of the first in Thailand to<br />

dabble in this field is Khun Tuen Coffee from<br />

Chiangmai. The plants are grown using high<br />

altitude agriculture ranging 1,200-1,600 metres<br />

from sea level. All coffee is planted out in the<br />

forest under vast shady trees, giving higher<br />

quality caffeine than regular methods.

Humans have known about coffee for over a thousand years, and possibly<br />

since the pre-historic age. They once confided in the mysterious power<br />

of this plant, appreicating its inner energy when consumed. Before coffee<br />

spread worldwide, evidence shows that coffee was primitively grown<br />

in the fifteen century around the Arabian Peninsula. Coffee culture<br />

is now changing, and well-known coffee franchises are emerging in<br />

almost every corner of today’s business districts. The coffee scene in<br />

Thailand and Asia is in a lively environment in terms of international<br />

These days, we mainly consume two coffee species; the first breed<br />

is Robusta. Strong and with an intensive sour flavour, they are often<br />

mass produced as instant coffee. Thai people are familiar with the<br />

traditional name, “O-liang”. Robusta is primarily found in Java island,<br />

Indonesia and cultivated in Southern Thailand in places like Chumpon<br />

and Krabi. Arabica is another sought after coffee species for people<br />

worldwide. Its identity is aromatic and full flavoured. Arabica is widely<br />

grown in Northern Thailand: Chiangmai and Chiangrai, since it prefers<br />

หากถามว่าสัตว์ชนิดใดที่เป็นตัวแทนของ<br />

ประเทศไทยได้ดีที่สุด แน่นอนว่าคนไทยทุกคน<br />

ต้องตอบว่า ‘ช้าง’ ช้างเป็นสัตว์ที่มีอิทธิพลต่อ<br />

วัฒนธรรมไทยเป็นอย่างสูงตั้งแต่สมัยอดีตกาล เห็นได้<br />

จากการที ่ช้างเผือกได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็นหนึ ่งใน<br />

เครื่องเชิดชูเกียรติประดับบารมีของพระมหากษัตริย์ทุก<br />

ยุคสมัย นอกจากนี้ ชาวไทยในหลายจังหวัดยังเลี้ยง<br />

ช้างไว้ใช้งาน<br />

แต่น่าเศร้าที่ปัจจุบันนี้ ไม่ใช่แต่เพียงช้างเผือก<br />

เท่านั้นที่หายาก แต่จำานวนของช้างธรรมดาใน<br />

ประเทศไทยก็เรียกได้ว่าเข้าขั้นวิกฤตจนอาจถึงขั้น<br />

สูญพันธุ์ ข้อมูลจากกรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่าและ<br />

พันธุ์พืชระบุว่า ช้างป่าที่เคยมีอยู่มากมายในประเทศ<br />

ปัจจุบันนี้มีเหลือไม่ถึง 3,000 ตัว กระจายอยู่ในพื้นที่<br />

อนุรักษ์จำานวน 68 แห่ง ส่วนช้างเลี้ยงก็มีมากกว่านั้น<br />

นิดหน่อย นั่นก็คือ 4,000 เชือก โดย 96% ในจำานวน<br />

นั้นเป็นช้างของเอกชน ที่เหลืออยู่ในความดูแลของ<br />

องค์การอุตสาหกรรมป่าไม้<br />

แล้วช้างไทยหายไปไหน? หนึ่งในคำาตอบที่เราได้ยิน<br />

กันมานานแล้วคือ แม้ช้างไทยจะมีกฎหมายคุ้มครอง แต่<br />

ช้างจำานวนไม่น้อยถูกฆ่าเพื่อเอางาไปขาย แต่นั่นยังไม่<br />

หมดแต่เพียงเท่านั้น กรณีการพบซากช้างถูกตัดอวัยวะ<br />

เพศในอุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน ทำาให้เราได้รู ้ว่า<br />

ขบวนการล้มช้างแนวใหม่ได้มาถึงประเทศไทยแล้ว นั่น<br />

คือ การฆ่าช้างเพื่อนำาอวัยวะเพศ รวมถึงงวงและเนื้อไป<br />

ทำาเป็นอาหารเพื่อเพิ่มพลังทางเพศหรือเพื่อสนองความ<br />

อยากลิ้มลองบริโภคของแปลก ในขณะที่บริเวณชายแดน<br />

ช้างที ่ชาวปกาเกอะญอเลี ้ยงไว้จำานวนมากต้องพิการ<br />

เพราะเหยียบกับระเบิด<br />

แม้ปัจจุบันจะมีการบังคับใช้กฎหมายสกัดการนำา<br />

ช้างมาเรี่ยไรในเมืองแล้ว แต่เมื่อได้เห็นจำ านวนของช้าง<br />

ที่นอกจากไม่เพิ่มแล้ว รังแต่จะลดน้อยลงทุกที ไหนจะ<br />

นานาปัญหาสารพัน คงถึงเวลาถามตัวเองแล้วล่ะมั้ง<br />

ว่าที่เราทำากันอยู่นี้ พอหรือยัง และจะต้องทำาอย่างไร<br />

ให้สถานการณ์ดีขึ้น ก่อนที่จะไม่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตที่เรียกว่า<br />

‘ช้าง’ เหลือให้เด็กรุ่นใหม่และนักท่องเที่ยวได้เห็นใน<br />

ประเทศต่อไป<br />

If you ask anyone what animal most represents<br />

our country, the quick answer is<br />

likely ‘elephants’. Influential to Thai culture<br />

since ancient times, the elephant is regarded<br />

as both beasts of burden and worshipped<br />

with prestige and honour. The white elephant<br />

has become a symbol of royalty over many<br />

dynasties, and the grey gentle giants are still<br />

part of daily life for many Thais.<br />

Sadly today, all of Thailand’s elephants<br />

are endangered. While they used to roam in<br />

large numbers, the population is now<br />

very close to extinction Data from the<br />

National Park Wildlife and Plant Conservation<br />

Department states that there are less than<br />

3,000 wild elephants left across 68 conservation<br />

areas. The numbers of domesticated<br />

elephants are only 4,000. Of those, 96%<br />

are privately owned while the rest are under<br />

the care of the Forest Industry Organization<br />

So where have our elephants gone?<br />

Although Thailand has protection laws,<br />

poaching for ivory and other valuables are<br />

prevalent. Recently, several elephants were<br />

found slaughtered with their reproductive<br />

organs missing. We’ve uncovered that new<br />

markets have been created for poachers<br />

who not only hunt for ivory, but also for<br />

unusual meats, especially trunks and sexual<br />

organs. These items are consumed by<br />

people looking for exotic delicacies, or who<br />

falsely believe such ingredients will boost<br />

virility. In addition to being hunted, elephants<br />

along the borders are regularly losing lives<br />

or limbs to landmines.<br />

There are laws that prevent elephants from<br />

entering the city to street-roam for tourism.<br />

However, this has not helped to increase the<br />

wild population, and may have contributed<br />

to the decline of the species. It’s time to ask<br />

ourselves if what we are doing is enough,<br />

and what could we be doing to help the<br />

situation before these majestic creatures<br />

disappear from Thailand forever.<br />
