สวัสดีครับ<br />

ขอต้อนรับสู่สายการบินไทยสมายล์ สายการบินที่พร้อมให้<br />

บริการผู้โดยสารทุกท่านด้วยรอยยิ้มในทุกเส้นทาง<br />

สำาหรับเดือนนี้ เรามีเรื่องยินดีหลายอย่างที่อยากแบ่งปันให้<br />

ผู้โดยสารทุกท่านได้รับทราบ เรื่องแรกคือเส้นทางกรุงเทพฯ-<br />

ย่างกุ้ง ที่เราได้เริ่มปฏิบัติการบินตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 สิงหาคมที่ผ่าน<br />

มานั้นได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งสายการบินไทยสมายล์<br />

อยากขอบพระคุณท่านผู้โดยสารที่ให้การสนับสนุนเรามาโดย<br />

ตลอด เดือนนี้ยังเป็นเดือนที่เราได้ฤกษ์เปิดตัวเครื่องแบบใหม่<br />

สำาหรับลูกเรือของไทยสมายล์ ซึ่งมีความโมเดิร์นและสดใสกว่า<br />

เดิม ออกแบบโดยคุณมิลิน ยุวจรัสกุล ดีไซเนอร์ชื่อดัง<br />

เพื่ออำานวยความสะดวกแก่ผู้โดยสาร สายการบินไทยสมายล์<br />

ได้พัฒนาบริการต่างๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการเช็คอิน<br />

ต่อเครื ่องไปยังจุดหมายปลายทางต่างประเทศ การเช็คอิน<br />

ไป-กลับภายในวันเดียวกัน และการเช็คอินออนไลน์เส้นทาง<br />

บินภายในประเทศสำาหรับผู้โดยสารไทยสมายล์ นอกจากนี้<br />

เรายังพัฒนากระบวนการออกใบกำากับภาษีให้มีความรวดเร็ว<br />

ยิ่งขึ้น โดยผู้โดยสารสามารถแจ้งความจำ านงผ่านเว็บไซต์ ศูนย์<br />

บริการลูกค้าทางโทรศัพท์ หรือศูนย์บริการลูกค้าภายใน<br />

สนามบิน ซึ ่งเราเชื ่อว่าบริการเหล่านี ้จะช่วยให้ผู ้โดยสารได้<br />

รับความสะดวกสบายยิ่งขึ้น<br />

ด้านกิจกรรมต่างๆ นั้น ไทยสมายล์นำ าเสนอแคมเปญ <strong>WE</strong><br />

Love Your SMILE ที่เราได้เชิญเหล่าบล็อกเกอร์ และเน็ตไอดอล<br />

มาแจกรอยยิ ้มสดใสผ่านมิวสิกวิดีโอล่าสุดที ่คาดว่าเหล่า<br />

แฟนคลับของไทยสมายล์คงได้ชมกันอย่างจุใจ นอกจากนี้ ใน<br />

เดือนสิงหาคมที่ผ่านมา เราได้จัดกิจกรรมพาน้องท่องฟ้า โดย<br />

พาน้องเยาวชนจากจังหวัดนราธิวาสมาทัศนศึกษาที ่จังหวัด<br />

ชลบุรี ซึ่งน้องๆ ได้รับรอยยิ้ม และประสบการณ์กลับไปทุกคน<br />

ในส่วนของการบริการบนเที่ยวบินนั้น ไทยสมายล์ฉลอง<br />

เทศกาลไหว้พระจันทร์ด้วยการให้บริการเมนูสุดพิเศษระหว่าง<br />

วันที่ 11-15 กันยายนนี้ เป็นขนมไหว้พระจันทร์ไส้คัสตาร์ด<br />

แสนอร่อยจากห้องอาหาร Mei Jiang สูตรของโรงแรมเพนนิน-<br />

ซูล่า กรุงเทพฯ อันโด่งดัง ซึ่งมีเฉพาะเทศกาลพิเศษนี้เท่านั้น<br />

สำาหรับนิตยสารวีสมายล์ฉบับนี้ ขอเชิญผู้โดยสารทุกท่าน<br />

เพลิดเพลินไปกับเนื้อหาที่เราคัดสรรมาเพื่อคุณ ทั้งเรื่องเมือง<br />

หาดใหญ่ รวมถึงแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมในย่านนางเลิ้ง<br />

นอกจากนี้เรายังมีแฟชั่นเซ็ตเครื่องแบบใหม่ล่าสุดให้ท่านได้<br />

Greetings,<br />

Welcome to Thai <strong>Smile</strong> Airways, the airline<br />

that provides our passengers with a smile to all<br />

destinations.<br />

This month, I am happy to announce the start of<br />

many new beginnings. First of which is the opening<br />

of our route from Bangkok to Yangon, where flights<br />

have operated from August 1. This is also the month<br />

where we unveil new uniforms for THAI <strong>Smile</strong>’s<br />

crew with modern and vibrant designs created by<br />

famous Thai designer Milin Yuvacharuskul.<br />

I would like to take this opportunity to also thank<br />

our passengers for their continued support through<br />

the years. To facilitate the needs of those flying with<br />

us, THAI <strong>Smile</strong> developed a line of unique services.<br />

This includes check-in machines at destinations<br />

abroad, the ability to check-in on the same day, or<br />

online check-in for domestic routes. Passengers can<br />

also receive tax invoices much faster by sending a<br />

request through our website, <strong>Smile</strong> call centre, or<br />

at the <strong>Smile</strong> service centre at the airport.<br />

We have also recently presented our “<strong>WE</strong> Love<br />

Your SMILE” campaign, which features bloggers<br />

and internet idols singing to our latest music video<br />

for THAI <strong>Smile</strong> fans. This past August, we were also<br />

pleased to organise a field trip for young children in<br />

Narathiwat province, allowing them to experience<br />

the best of Chonburi.<br />

<strong>September</strong> brings the Mid-Autumn Festival, and<br />

THAI <strong>Smile</strong> celebrates this with a special menu<br />

of mooncakes from Mei Jiang restaurant at the<br />

Peninsula Bangkok. This special treat is available<br />

on our flights from <strong>September</strong> 11 - 15.<br />

For this issue of <strong>WE</strong> <strong>Smile</strong>, we invite our passengers<br />

to enjoy an inside look at Hat Yai, a cultural tourism<br />

spot in Southern Thailand. In addition, you can<br />

browse through a special fashion set featuring the<br />

new uniforms of our flight attendants.<br />

ถมทองซึ ่งเปนศิลปหัตถกรรมดั ้งเดิมของ<br />

ไทยนั้นมีมาตั้งแตสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาแลว<br />

แตงานหัตถศิลปชนิดนี ้กลับมาเฟ องฟูและเปนที<br />

นิยมมากในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร การถมเงินถมทอง<br />

เริ ่มจากการตีแผนเงินเพื ่อเปนรูปทรงตางๆ แลว<br />

สลักใหเปนลวดลาย หรืออาจใชวิธีเขียนลายกัด<br />

กรด จากนั ้นจึงนํายาถมที ่มีสีดํามารมดวยความ<br />

รอนและถมลงรองลวดลายจนเต็มเสมอพื ้นผิว<br />

แลวคอยนําทองคําบริสุทธิ ์ที ่ผสมเปนเนื ้อเดียว<br />

กับปรอทมาทาบนชิ ้นงานใหทั ่ว จากนั ้นคอยใช<br />

ความรอนไลปรอทออกไป เมื่อปรอทระเหิดออก<br />

ไปเหลือแคทองคําติดอยู สีดําของยาถม สีทอง<br />

ของทองคําจึงเรียกวา ‘ถมทอง’ นอกจากฉากถมทอง<br />

modern exhibits, photography and<br />

โดยผลงานพระที ่นั ่งพุดตานถมทองนี ้ใชเวลา<br />

สรางสรรคถึง ๒ ป และตองใชชางฝมือถึง ๑๓๐<br />

คนในการรังสรรคใหเสร็จสิ้น<br />

Gold Nielloware has long been a fundamental<br />

Thai Art, achieving refi nements since the<br />

Ayutthaya era. From there, this style of<br />

craftsmanship received a renaissance during<br />

the Rattanakosin period, a revival that ensures<br />

it is still fl ourishing today. Nielloware is created<br />

with a fl at silver or gold plate which is then<br />

molded into a desired shape. Intricate carvings<br />

are then deeply etched onto the surface. Niello<br />

alloy, a mixture of pure gold and mercury, is<br />

then inlaid onto the pattern’s grooves. Heat is<br />

applied to evaporate the mercury. This leaves<br />

the design shining with rich gold or “thomtong”,<br />

accented by deep black niello. In addition to<br />

the spectacular gold Niello Screen with Scenes<br />

from the Ramakien, Arts of the Kingdom<br />

Museum Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall also<br />

displays The Gold Niello Bhudthan Throne, which<br />

is a replica of the wood Bhudthan Throne of the<br />

Palace. This grand masterpiece took 2 years,<br />

and required 130 craftspeople to complete.<br />

The AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) was established with<br />

a primary goal to improve the economic power and competitiveness<br />

of ASEAN countries in the global arena. However, we have to<br />

admit that to achieve this goal, there must be a way for all of<br />

the ten member countries to connect on a core level. The Golden<br />

Heritage of ASEAN Textiles Exhibit will show how member states<br />

of ASEAN have been bound together for centuries through garments,<br />

textiles and threads.<br />

The Golden Heritage of ASEAN Textiles Exhibit will be held in<br />

honour of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to celebrate her<br />

60th birthday. The aim is also to showcase fabrics and garments<br />

that refl ect the identity of each ASEAN country, from unique<br />

woven patterns to traditional and cultural costumes. One thing<br />

that appears obvious is the role that textiles played in the ancient<br />

cultures of this region. Although there were tribal and ethnic<br />

diversity, as well as differences in language and customs, textile<br />

became a way to communicate indirectly. In addition to showcasing<br />

this aspect, the exhibition will also display over 500 pieces of rare<br />

textiles and apparel that Ajarn Phaothong Thongjuea and his<br />

colleagues collected over the course of forty years. Some<br />

fabrics in the collection are dated to be over two hundred years old.<br />

The Golden Heritage of ASEAN Textiles Exhibit is open now<br />

Congestion and confusion in the city can make anyone wish for an<br />

ล่ะ จริงมั้ย?<br />

Can you tell us about your latest projects?<br />

I just finished filming the TV dramas Neung Nai Suang, Nang Rai<br />

Teeruk, Plubpleung See and Chompoo, and I’m currently filming<br />

Duen Prachum Dao, Heha (Mia) Navy and I am also a guest actress<br />

for Tai Ngao Chan and Love Devil. Moreover, I have a little business<br />

on Instagram, which sells dietary supplements called Daviz.<br />

How did you come up with this business?<br />

One day I talked with Khun B, who is now my business partner. I<br />

am 40 years old now, while B is 53. Our metabolism is not as good<br />

as it used to be and the body produces less L-carnitine. We started<br />

looking for something to help us and found this formula. We tested<br />

it for over a year. In Daviz, all ingredients are natural. It includes<br />

things like chilli, seaweed, white beans, and Malabar tamarind. There<br />

are some imported ingredients, but no chemicals. It helps boost the<br />

metabolic process and help facilitate the excretory system. When<br />

our systems work in a more efficient way, the body gets slimmer.<br />

Apart from the dietary supplements, how do you take care of<br />

yourself?<br />

I take vitamins and go to the gym. When the whole body gets<br />

tensed from too much exercise, I had to go for a massage. So now<br />

I try to work out every other day. For stress, if I feel stressed, I tend<br />

to go for acupuncture.<br />

Any tips that you would like to share with modern working women?<br />

I think diet is very important. It’s the thing that people tend to<br />

neglect the most. A balanced diet is important, especially when<br />

you are getting older. Skip a meal and you can have a headache.<br />

Get enough rest, exercise, drink a lot of water. Appearance is also<br />

essential. You have to pay attention to yourself. If you don’t love<br />

yourself, who will love you? Right?

It’s not just the rabbits of folklore that are tied to the moon.<br />

We humans have been fascinated by its beauty for centuries.<br />

According to Chinese belief, the 15th day of the 8th lunar<br />

month is when the moon shines the brightest and fullest,<br />

thus marking the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to the<br />

Chinese mythology, the Mid-Autumn Festival began with<br />

the legend of Chang Er, the wife of Hou Yi. Back then ten<br />

suns hung in the sky. To make the world a better place,<br />

Hou Yi, a skilled archer, shot down nine suns. He received<br />

an elixir that would make him immortal as thanks from a<br />

well-wisher, but when the word about the immortal potion<br />

began to spread, Chang E, to whom he gave the potion to,<br />

was under attack. To escape from danger, Chang E decied<br />

to drink the potion herself, she then soared up to the sky<br />

to become the moon goddess. Hou Yi missed his wife<br />

so much that he took food to his wife as offerings on an<br />

altar. This happened yearly and soon after people began<br />

to follow him, thus the moon worshipping ceremony in the<br />

Mid-Autumn Festival began.<br />

มาซึ่งเอกราชของชาวฮั่น จนกลายเปนประเพณีการรับ<br />

ประทานและไหวขนมไหวพระจันทรในปจจุบัน<br />

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also the day when families<br />

reunite. Thailand has long observed this festival, as it is<br />

popular with the country’s large ethnic Chinese population.<br />

This tradition would not be complete without mooncakes,<br />

the sweet circular pastries that are stuffed with various<br />

delights. There are several legends about mooncakes but<br />

the most popular one might be the story about the Han<br />

uprising. The Han people planned an uprising against<br />

the rule of the Mongols. However, the Mongols were very<br />

watchful, and the Han people had no way to pass messages<br />

that were necessary to unite members into action. After<br />

a secret meeting, a plan was formed: the Mid-Autumn<br />

Festival of that year would be the day for them to take<br />

action. And the mooncakes would serve as a vessel to<br />

pass the action plan on. A piece of paper with a message<br />

was inserted into every single one of the cakes: “Kill the<br />

Mongols on the 15th day of the 8th month.” On the night<br />

of the Moon Festival, when the moon was shining, the<br />

rebels attacked according to their plan and overthrew<br />

the government.

จะชวนให้นึกถึงดวงจันทร์แล้ว คำในภาษาจีนที่แปลว่า ‘วงกลม’<br />

ที่หมายถึงพระจันทร์นั้นยังออกเสียงเหมือนกับคำว่า ‘การกลับมา<br />

piece is also the same size, which is why the mooncake is<br />

a symbol of unity and harmony. The circular shape—<br />

reminiscent of the moon—also serves another purpose.<br />

The Chinese word for ‘circle’ refers to the moon, but it also<br />

sounds like the word “reunion”.<br />

When it comes to travelling in the Isan region, Khon Kaen is an interesting<br />

“Last year I had a chance to visit Hokkaido. It was freezing,<br />

but fun too! The whole town turned white from the snowfall.<br />

We had a “snow war” and walked through the forest. I took<br />

lots of photos, it was such a memorable trip.”<br />

Do you have a travel experience you would like to share<br />

with our readers?<br />

“Recently I had a chance to go to Phuket with my family. My<br />

dad and I swam together in the sea. It was like we travelled<br />

through time and suddenly I was a little girl again. We floated<br />

in the sea, chatting. The ambiance was perfect and it was a<br />

very warm moment.”<br />

“I think of lush forests full of elephants playing in the river…<br />

or maybe a floating market where we can see the local way<br />

of life. The market is always full of delicious Thai food, and<br />

there is always too much to choose from. ”<br />

“Phuket. I love the crystal sea, clear sky, everything is too<br />

good to be true. We can also go island-hopping. I never<br />

get bored of Phuket.”<br />

ของสายการบินไทยสมายล์กันบ้างแล้ว ในฉบับนี้เองที่วีสมายล์ได้พูดคุยกับดีไซเนอร์สาว<br />

มิลิน ยุวจรัสกุล ดีไซเนอร์ผู้สร้างสรรค์เครื่องแบบคอลเลกชั่นใหม่ถึงขั้นตอนการทำางาน<br />

Have you noticed the uniforms on THAI <strong>Smile</strong>’s flight attendants? The lovely<br />

women around you are wearing styles created by the darling of Thailand’s<br />

fashion scene, Milin Yuvacharuskul. <strong>WE</strong> <strong>Smile</strong> speaks to the designer about<br />

her collections and the processes that inspire her.<br />

วีสมายล์: คอนเซ็ปต์หลักของเครื่องแบบใหม่นี้คืออะไรคะ<br />

<strong>WE</strong> <strong>Smile</strong>: What was the main concept behind the new uniforms?<br />

มิลิน: คอนเซ็ปต์ของชุดก็จะสอดคล้องกับสโลแกนของไทยสมายล์ Milin: The concept started with THAI <strong>Smile</strong>’s slogan, “Trendy,<br />

ซึ่งก็คือ Trendy, Friendly, Worthy ค่ะ ก่อนจะออกแบบเราก็เชิญลูกเรือ Friendly, Worthy.” We invited the cabin crew to talk about<br />

มาคุยกันว่าอยากได้เครื่องแบบดีไซน์แบบไหน มีปัญหาอะไรบ้าง แล้วก็ what they needed in a uniform, and watched them at work<br />

ต้องไปดูการทำางานของลูกเรือว่าอยู่บนเครื่องเขาต้องทำาอะไร ก็ปรับ to address any situations they might face. The designs were<br />

เปลี่ยนกันอยู่หลายครั้ง แต่ด้วยความที่เราเป็นลูกค้าอยู่แล้วเลยง่ายขึ้น modified several times, but as I was familiar with their airline,<br />

มิลิน: สำาหรับมี่ซึ่งเป็นลูกค้าอยู่แล้ว สายการบินไทยสมายล์เป็นสายการบิน<br />

ระดับพรีเมี่ยม ยิ่งมีโปรโมชั่นต่างๆ เข้ามาเสริมด้วยก็ยิ่งทำาให้รู้สึกว่า<br />

ทุกบาทที่จ่ายไปนั้นคุ้มค่ามากค่ะ<br />

<strong>WE</strong> <strong>Smile</strong>: Can you tell us about the uniform’s details?<br />

Milin: Every look is modern with a touch of Thailand. The fabric<br />

is stitched diagonally, there are traditional folds and pleated<br />

details on the neckline. These aspects give more dimension<br />

and adds an overall gentle style. The main colour is tangerine<br />

orange, with the patterned section bearing a print reminiscent<br />

of the evening sky with purple, pink, and yellow which all<br />

corresponds with THAI <strong>Smile</strong>’s colours. Personally, I think the<br />

sky is most beautiful at dusk, whenever I see it from the plane,<br />

it always makes me smile.<br />

<strong>WE</strong> <strong>Smile</strong>: What makes THAI <strong>Smile</strong> different from other airlines?<br />

Milin: As a regular customer, I think THAI <strong>Smile</strong> is a premium<br />

airline. With the various promotions, it makes me feel that the<br />

flight is worth every penny spent.

หากพูดถึงคำาว่านางเลิ้ง ภาพแรกที่แวบในหัว<br />

คุณคืออะไร แน่นอนว่าหลายคนคงนึกถึงตลาด<br />

ที่รวบรวมของกิน หรือกล้วยทอดที่เดินมาส่ง<br />

ถึงรถ ที่ใครต่อใครต้องเคยซื้อแก้หิวยามรถติดกันมาแล้ว<br />

ย่านนางเลิ้งในอดีตเคยอยู่ในสภาพท้องทุ่งชื่อว่า<br />

ทุ่งส้มป่อยหรือสนามกระบือ ใช้เป็นสถานที่ประกอบ<br />

พิธีแรกนาขวัญและพิธีพิรุณศาสตร์หรือการขอฝนใน<br />

สมัยต้นรัตนโกสินทร์ ต่อมาเมื่อพัฒนาเป็นชุมชนย่าน<br />

การค้าซึ่งเป็นผลจากการขุดคลองผดุงกรุงเกษมในสมัย<br />

สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 4 จนเป็นศูนย์กลาง<br />

การค้าทางน้ำาอันเฟื่องฟูแล้ว อีเลิ้งหรือภาชนะประเภท<br />

โอ่งหรือตุ่มก็ได้ถูกซื้อขายกันเป็นจำานวนมากในย่านนี้<br />

จนทำาให้ถูกเรียกตามชื่ออีเลิ้ง ซึ่งเชื่อว่าเป็นที่มาของชื่อ<br />

นางเลิ้งในปัจจุบัน ทุกวันนี้ ชุมชนนางเลิ้งยังเต็มไป<br />

ด้วยเรื่องราวให้ค้นหาผ่านซอกหลืบต่างๆ ซึ่งถ้าใครได้<br />

มีโอกาสเดินลัดเลาะแล้วคงมีอันได้หลงเสน่ห์ เพราะ<br />

When thinking of Nang Lerng,<br />

most people picture food markets or<br />

the famous fried bananas which are<br />

served right to your car’s driver side<br />

window during a traffic jam.<br />

Nang Lerng area once was a field<br />

called “Som Poi Field” or “Kra Bue<br />

Field” which served as a place for<br />

the Harvest Festival during the early<br />

Rattanakosin era. After a grand<br />

canal was dug during the reign of<br />

King Rama IV, the area became a<br />

centre of transportation and trading.<br />

The name ‘Nang Lerng’ was derived<br />

from ‘E-Lerng’ which refers to<br />

trading urns and traditional water<br />

vessels. Today, this community has<br />

charming and nostalgic spots to<br />

relax and shop.

วัดสุนทรธรรมทานคือศูนย์กลางแรกเริ่มของ<br />

ย่านนางเลิ้งตั้งแต่ก่อนมีการขุดคลองผดุง-<br />

กรุงเกษม วัดนี้มีชื่อเดิมว่าวัดแคนางเลิ้ง ซึ่ง<br />

เพี้ยนมาจากคำาว่า วัดแค่ ตามสำาเนียงชาวใต้<br />

ที่มาตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ หลังจากได้อพยพโยกย้าย<br />

กลับมาตามกองทัพของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง<br />

(ดิศ บุนนาค) เมื่อครั้งยกทัพไปปราบหัวเมือง<br />

ปักษ์ใต้ จึงเป็นที่มาของบ้านละคร คณะโขน<br />

การแสดงต่างๆ พระอุโบสถอันใหญ่โตสวยงาม<br />

ของวัดนั้น ส่วนหนึ่งสำาเร็จได้ด้วยเงินบริจาคของ<br />

มิตร ชัยบัญชา ดาราผู้ล่วงลับที่เคยอาศัยอยู่ใน<br />

ชุมชนแห่งนี้ และกฐินดาราที่เขานำาดาราพร้อม<br />

แฟนหนังมาช่วยกันทำาบุญ ที่วัดนี้จึงเป็นสถานที่<br />

สวดอภิธรรมศพและเก็บอัฐิของเขาอีกด้วย<br />

ปัจจุบันยังมีคนไปกราบไหว้ช่องเก็บอัฐิของเขา<br />

อยู่เสมอ เห็นได้จากดอกไม้ที่ยังคงใหม่และรูป<br />

ปั้นที่ทางวัดเก็บรักษาไว้อย่างดี เพื่อระลึกถึงการ<br />

จากไปแม้จะยาวนานถึง 45 ปีแล้วก็ตาม สำาหรับ<br />

ระลึกถึงมิตร<br />

Remembering Mitr Chaibancha<br />

Soonthorn Dhammatan Temple was<br />

the centre of this area long before the<br />

canal was dug. The previous name<br />

‘Kae Nang Lerng Temple’ was given to<br />

the temple by Southern natives that<br />

migrated alongside the troops of Dis<br />

Bunnag after he battled with the<br />

Southern cities. The significant temple<br />

was patronised by Mitr Chaibancha,<br />

a famous actor living in this area.<br />

He encouraged merit and donation for<br />

this temple, so his bones were<br />

preserved here. Although he passed<br />

away over 45 years ago, people still<br />

come to pay respect to him. If you<br />

want to visit this area, this makes an<br />

‘Baan Ten Rum’ which could be<br />

translated as ‘Dancing House’, the<br />

former ‘Samakee Dancing School’<br />

taught a style of dancing that took<br />

place in large fields. As time passed,<br />

the house was abandoned. But,a new<br />

renovation project resurrects the<br />

glorious 1960 architectural details.<br />

The original structure is preserved,<br />

decorated with antiques, real and<br />

adapted. You’ll find many real record<br />

players. The lamps and mirrors are<br />

made from old cassettes, giving a<br />

contemporary feel. By the year’s end,<br />

there will be an exhibition and dance<br />

workshop. You can enjoy nice music<br />

together and improve your techniques.<br />

There will also be a library, hostel, and<br />

cafe to financially support the locals.<br />

After the renovation, the locals have a<br />

place to be proud of what their ancestors<br />

left behind. They also have a space to<br />

reign of King Rama III. Nowadays, it serves as a<br />

common space for activities and art, using art to<br />

พร้อมๆ กับทางรถไฟสายใต้ ในปีพ.ศ. 2452 สมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้า-<br />

เจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชดำาริให้สร้างทางรถไฟสายใต้ขึ้น ส่วนหนึ่งก็เพราะ<br />

ทรงอยากเชื่อมหัวเมืองทางใต้เข้ากับการปกครองส่วนกลาง และเพื่อป้องกัน<br />

ไม่ให้อังกฤษเข้ามาแทรกแซงหัวเมืองมลายูของไทย ซึ่งนอกจากจะช่วย<br />

ให้การคมนาคมระหว่างกรุงเทพฯและภาคใต้สะดวกและรวดเร็วยิ่งขึ้นแล้ว<br />

ทางรถไฟสายนี้ยังช่วยยกระดับฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจของประชาชนภาคใต้<br />

The beginnings of Hat Yai’s growth is heavily linked to<br />

the start of the Southern Railway in 1909. His Majesty King<br />

Rama V built the railway to connect the southern districts to<br />

the central administration. This was also a security measure<br />

to prevent British intervention and allow the people of<br />

Bangkok to travel south in a faster and more convenient<br />

way. The southern railroad junction is located at Khok<br />

Samed Chun, which later merged with the city of Hat Yai.<br />

This allowed Hat Yai to flourish as a centre for trade. Growth<br />

further increased when the British requested permission to<br />

connect the rail lines from Hat Yai to Padang Besar, Alor<br />

Setar and Penang in Malaysia. Due to its connected railway<br />

system and being part of the province of Songkhla (a<br />

famous shipping port since ancient times), Hat Yai became<br />

the region’s major junction and economic centre.

ทำาให้ชาวต่างชาติเข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณตลาด<br />

เป็นจำานวนมาก และเพื่อรองรับประชากรที่เพิ่ม<br />

ขึ้น ได้มีการตัดถนนเพิ่มอีก 3 สาย ซึ่งก็คือถนน<br />

นิพัทธ์อุทิศสาย 1, 2 และ 3 ประชากรจากที่ต่างๆ<br />

โดยเฉพาะชาวจีนได้พากันเข้ามาตั้งรกรากใน<br />

ย่านนี้จนชุมชนใกล้ทางรถไฟได้กลายเป็นชุมชน<br />

ชาวจีนไปโดยปริยาย เห็นได้จากป้ายหน้าร้าน<br />

รวงต่างๆ ที่ล้วนเป็นตัวอักษรจีน<br />

The railroads not only brought<br />

economic prosperity, but also an influx<br />

of Chinese immigrants from Malaysia.<br />

This includes the Hakka, Teochew,<br />

Cantonese and Hainanese Chinese.<br />

Many first came as labourers who directly<br />

worked on the railroads, but others later<br />

settled in Hat Yai to trade and start<br />

businesses in the new rubber plantations<br />

and mining industries. As the population<br />

increased, houses and shops began to<br />

sprout between the transportation<br />

networks and markets. The two-storey<br />

wooden homes turned into halftimbered<br />

buildings, which then became<br />

full brick and mortar structures. Hat Yai<br />

soon had its first cement structure,<br />

the Sino-Portuguese style “Yip In Tsoi”<br />

building located on Niphat-Uthit 1 road.<br />

Hat Yai’s economy boomed again in<br />

1928 when Mr. Chee Kim Yong, an investor<br />

from Songkhla, decided to build a<br />

permanent market. Three roads were<br />

constructed to accommodate the rising<br />

population, which became Niphat-Uthit 1,<br />

2 and 3. The Chinese lived and thrived<br />

around the railroad, and their community’s<br />

influence can still be seen in the Chinese<br />

characters on storefronts in the area.

As the city grew, more hotels and entertainment venues<br />

opened. The Vic Khun Phra Theatre was the first cinema<br />

in the city. Then came the western-style King Theatre,<br />

situated next to Kim Yong market. Hotels began to spring<br />

up like flowers, including the Kian Tai hotel, Yi Kee Hotel,<br />

Seefhat Hotel and the Japanese Nippon Hotel. Although<br />

today new hotels have taken their place, tourism and<br />

entertainment still contributes a major part to Hat Yai’s<br />

income. Each year 3.5 million people visit the province. The<br />

majority of tourists come from Malaysia and Singapore,<br />

crossing the border at Sadao. Thai tourists and other<br />

foreigners usually travel by air, and Hat Yai airport receives<br />

over 70 flights and ten thousand people daily. The<br />

commercial expertise of the Hat Yai locals have allowed<br />

them to adapt and accommodate all groups of people. For<br />

those who seek entertainment, a pub crawl along the main<br />

streets is a welcome way to spend leisure time. Each venue<br />

Of course, when visiting Hat Yai one of<br />

the first landmarks to put on your list is the<br />

Kim Yong market. There is an old saying<br />

that if you missed visiting this market, then<br />

you have not seen Hat Yai at all. Imported<br />

products from neighbouring countries fill<br />

almost every corner of the two-storey<br />

market. Here you’ll find textiles, clothing,<br />

electrical appliances, footwear, fragrances<br />

skincare, dry foods, snacks and fruits like<br />

rare imported cherries. In addition to<br />

general shopping, this is a great place to<br />

practice your bargaining skills. Not far from<br />

Kim Yong Market is Santisuk Market,<br />

another famous old marketplace with a<br />

wide selection of imported goods.<br />

Aside from the traditional markets, Hat<br />

Yai is also known for its creative shopping<br />

centres. From Diana Shopping Mall, one<br />

of the first malls in the southern region,<br />

you can also find Odeon and the new<br />

Central Festival.

Hat Yai is home to people of many ethnic backgrounds, and has<br />

embraced these diversities. Almost every major religion has a place<br />

of worship in the city. It is popular among Buddhists to worship at<br />

Phra Maha Chedi Tripop Trimongkol, the first stainless steel Chedi in<br />

the world. Muslims can admire the beauty of The Central Mosque in<br />

Hat Yai, which is regarded as the “Taj Mahal of Thailand”, and is<br />

especially breathtaking in the evenings. The Thai-Chinese and Chinese<br />

people also have Wat Thaworn Wararam, a local heritage site. If you<br />

have time, we recommend going to Kor Hong Mountain which is part<br />

of the National Park. There is a large sacred Buddha statue here,<br />

and you can then ride a cable car to see a Brahman Deity and<br />

Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) statue made of white jade. Off in the<br />

distance, one can also catch a glimpse of the Central Mosque. It’s a<br />

magnificent spot to reflect on the idea of different religions coexisting<br />

together.<br />

Not far from the city is the Tambon (sub-district) of Klong Hae.<br />

Here, you’ll find Fooktien Market, which may seem an unlikely place<br />

to visit at first. Look closely and you’ll find a Jade Amulet Centre<br />

created by Thamamayut Jainpichitkulchai of the Fooktien Group. He’s<br />

more commonly known as “the man who owns the 1,000 year jade”.<br />

The three unit and three storey building exhibits ancient objects<br />

and sculptures carved from various types of jade. This includes an<br />

Imperial Jade bell that dates back over 1,000 years, a grand seal<br />

(also made of Imperial Jade) that his mother—who was in the<br />

Chinese royal court—brought to Thailand, along with 200,000<br />

buddha amulets, Benjarong pottery from the era of King Rama V<br />

and countless antiques. The admission fee is 1,000 THB, with<br />

proceeds going to benefit a charity that provides housing for the<br />

needy in various provinces. The Fooktien Group has future plans to<br />

build a new museum to exhibit their permanent collection.

shop” throughout the city and fi nd<br />

wholesome dishes. Should you want to<br />

taste more refi ned items, visit Washington<br />

Chinese Restaurant. If you’re craving<br />

something different however, try Basil<br />

Restaurant. This spot serves Mediterranean<br />

cuisine with a spectacular wine<br />

list. Another great choice is Wine Village<br />

Restaurant, which serves premium<br />

European and Thai cuisine in a casual<br />

setting.<br />

Once fi lled up on good food, you can<br />

relax with fi nely crafted drinks and live<br />

music at Barocco. Alternatively, chill<br />

like the locals and fi nd a “Raan Nom”<br />

or Milk Shop. These stands sell fresh<br />

milk and other beverages accompanied<br />

by roti and fried dumplings. They are<br />

scattered throughout the city, and<br />

although it may be close to midnight,<br />

the Milk Shops are still crowded with<br />

หากใครที่ไดไปรานหนังสือบอยๆ คงจะสังเกตเห็นถึงกระแสหนึ่งที่กําลัง<br />

มาแรงในชวงนี้ ที่หลุดออกจากกรอบของนิยาย (fi ction) หรือหนังสือ<br />

ที่ไมใชนิยาย (non-fi ction) โดยสิ้นเชิง ใชแลว หนังสือที่ขายดีที่สุด<br />

ในวันนี้คือสมุดระบายสีสําหรับผูใหญ กระแสนี้เริ่มขึ้นในปค.ศ. 2013 หลังจาก<br />

ที่โจฮันนา แบสฟอรด (Johanna Basford) เปดตัวหนังสือ ‘Secret Garden:<br />

An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book’ โจฮันนาซึ่งเปนนักวาดภาพ<br />

ประกอบนั้นโดงดังจากผลงานที่เธอวาดใหกับบรรดาแบรนดไวนและน้ําหอม<br />

และงานของเธอมักจะมีความประณีตและเต็มไปดวยรายละเอียด ซึ่งแตกตางจาก<br />

หลบหนีจากโลกแหงความจริงสูโลกแหงจินตนาการได ยิ่งจินตนาการนาตื่นเตน<br />

มากเทาไหร บรรดาสื่อบันเทิงเหลานี้ก็ยิ่งขายดีมากขึ้นเทานั้น และบางที<br />

โลกแหงจินตนาการที่ดีที่สุดก็คือโลกที่เราไดกลับไปเปนเด็กอีกครั้ง ที่ซึ่งเรา<br />

สามารถสนุกกับการสรางสรรคผลงานศิลปะไดอยางไมตองลงแรงอะไรมาก<br />

A new craze is sweeping across bookstores, and it has<br />

nothing to do with fi ction or non-fi ction. Books topping the<br />

current best seller's list are all adult colouring books. It<br />

started in 2013, with the release of “Secret Garden: An Inky<br />

Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book” by Johanna Basford.<br />

The illustrator is perhaps best known for her work on wine<br />

and perfume labels, and her gorgeous drawings are intricate,<br />

refi ned and not anything like the cartoonish simplicity<br />

you’d fi nd in a children’s colouring book. Today, book stores<br />

can’t seem to keep the new editions on shelves. From the<br />

previously mentioned fantastical garden created by Basford<br />

to Gemma Latimer and Jessica Stoke’s “The Wallpaper<br />

Colouring Book” and “Tropical Wonderlands” by Millie Marotta,<br />

there is no lack of new titles.<br />

So what compels adults to sit down and relive their<br />

childhood by colouring? Some believe it’s the millennials who<br />

have returned to live with their parents, an act which in itself<br />

brings out a childish nature. With today’s entertainment so<br />

focused on drawing people into another world, books, movies<br />

and videogames gain cult status from people’s willingness to<br />

suspend belief and escape into fantasy. The more enthralling<br />

the fantasy, the better your media sells. And perhaps the<br />

best fantasy to fall in is the ability to become a child again<br />

and be lost in creating art with little or no effort.

อีกหนึ่งทฤษฎีที่ฟังดูสมเหตุสมผลคือ ลวดลายในหนังสือระบายสี<br />

เหล่านี้ดูคล้ายกับมันดาลา (Mandala) หรือภาพวาดทรายอันแสน<br />

ละเอียดที่พระทิเบตสร้างสรรค์ขึ้น โดยเชื่อกันว่าการสร้างมันดาลา<br />

เราชอบระบายสี ทำาไมโตขึ้นแล้วยังจะชอบไม่ได้ล่ะ?<br />

แต่ถึงกระนั้น แม้คนจะโตขึ้น แต่ศิลปะการระบายสีไม่ได้ง่ายขึ้นตาม<br />

Others say it is akin to the Mandalas—the intricate<br />

sand paintings that Tibetan monks create—a form<br />

of mediation. This is also possible, as many people<br />

are seeking stress relief in today’s hectic lifestyle.<br />

The repetitive and calming aspect of colouring has<br />

been well recorded to reduce anxiety and famous<br />

Psychologist Carl Jung used to have his patients colour<br />

in mandalas for this very purpose. There is also the<br />

popularity of social media, which allows people to<br />

share their creations. While all of these things may<br />

be true, the answer may be simpler than you think.<br />

If one enjoyed the creative energy of colouring as a<br />

child, why not as an adult?<br />

Colouring as an adult has its own set of challenges.<br />

Though it follows a wonderfully brilliant formula,<br />

“easy to play, and hard to master”. Anyone can<br />

pick up a colouring book and begin filling in lines.<br />

However, seeing the masterful works on social<br />

media, or achieving your own personal techniques<br />

goes a long way to sustaining this hobby. It becomes<br />

an achievable, and very addictive pastime.

¤งปฏิเสธไมไดเสียแลววาคานิยม รสนิยม และวิถีชีวิตตางๆ There’s no denying that our interests, values,<br />

แม้ในปัจจุบันนี้ อัตราของผู้ที่อ่านหนังสือจะมี<br />

จำานวนน้อยลงเรื่อยๆในหลายประเทศ Improbable<br />

Libraries และโปรเจ็กต์ใหม่ๆเหล่านี้เป็นเหมือน<br />

อีกหนึ่งเครื่องพิสูจน์ว่าวัฒนธรรมการอ่านและห้อง<br />

สมุดนั้นไม่ใช่ว่าจะโค่นล้มได้ง่ายๆ แม้ว่าการอ่าน<br />

หนังสืออิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (E-Book Reader) และการ<br />

รับสื่อทางอินเตอร์เน็ตจะเป็นที่นิยมมาก แต่<br />

วัฒนธรรมการอ่านหนังสือเล่ม และวัฒนธรรม ‘ห้อง<br />

สมุด’ หรือการเก็บสะสมหนังสือต่างๆ ไว้ในที่<br />

เดียวกันเพื่อหาความรู้นั้นก็ไม่ได้มีทีท่าจะสูญเสีย<br />

ความนิยม ในทางตรงกันข้าม กลับจะมีการเผยแพร่<br />

นักอ่านอย่างเราก็อดหวังไม่ได้ว่าจะมีห้องสมุดดีๆ<br />

ให้ได้เลือกไปนั่งอ่านหนังสือกันเยอะๆ ก็ไม่รู้เหมือน<br />

กันนะว่าจะเป็นจริงมั้ย แต่ก็อย่างที่พาโบล ปิกัสโซ่<br />

พูดไว้แหละว่า “ทุกสิ่งที่จินตนาการได้ เป็นจริงเสมอ”<br />

I confess that those who are<br />

enchanted with books may seem a little<br />

strange. They get lost just by touching<br />

the texture of paper, inhaling the soft<br />

smell of the pages (which seems to<br />

purfume the air when reading in a<br />

quiet spot) before getting completely<br />

sumerged in a thrilling story or beautiful<br />

illustrations. If that is a form of<br />

marketing then I am pleased to be a<br />

victim of this propaganda knowingly,<br />

since I’ve purchased many books not<br />

just for reading, but also for collecting.<br />

Most people have their first<br />

experience with books in a small or<br />

narrow school library. There’s not much<br />

space for anything aside from your<br />

imagination. When we grow up, we<br />

have to wonder if a dedicated ‘area for<br />

reading’ is really possible. We often<br />

can’t help but dream and long for the<br />

spaces created for bookworms that are<br />

described in literature. This is what<br />

prompted Alex Johnson to travel the<br />

world in search for fantasy libraries that<br />

have been made real.<br />

The book, “Improbable Libraries” by<br />

Alex Johnson published by Thames &<br />

Hudson showcases imaginative places<br />

CULTURE<br />

that have been transformed into a hive<br />

for the imagination with books, which<br />

(most importantly) offer others the<br />

ability to read for free. Whether it be a<br />

treetop library at luxury Thai resort<br />

Sovena Kiri, a library for youths on the<br />

back of a camel in Mongolia, a pop-up<br />

library for the Occupy Wall Street event<br />

in central New York, or a mobile library on<br />

bike wheels which services the state of<br />

Arizona for people of all ages to fill their<br />

minds with endless imaginative worlds.<br />

Aside from the ground-breaking<br />

libraries which Johnson included in his<br />

book, there is currently an initiative<br />

called ‘The Future Library Project’<br />

created by Katie Paterson. This aims to<br />

plant trees in Norway which will then be<br />

used to create original manuscripts<br />

from famous writers each year until<br />

2114. The books will become part of a<br />

large future library.<br />

Although the number of regular<br />

readers are decreasing in every country<br />

around the world, Improbable Libraries<br />

and other new projects are proof that<br />

the culture of reading and libraries will<br />

not be overthrown easily. Even with the<br />

popularity of E-Book Readers and<br />

online media, the culture of reading,<br />

libraries, and book collecting in one<br />

place has not faded. On the contrary, it<br />

seems to be improving in new creative<br />

directions. The story of ‘An Ideal<br />

Library’ spreads widely and quickly in<br />

today’s internet world. Seeing these<br />

projects gradually become reality,<br />

readers like us may wonder if we too<br />

can hope to have a fantastical library for<br />

our own personal use, one that stirs the<br />

imagination where we can peacefully sit<br />

and read. We never know if it will come<br />

true. But as Pablo Picasso once said,<br />

“Everything you can imagine is real”.<br />

On August 1, <strong>2015</strong>, Dr. Kanit Saengsuphan, Chairman of<br />

THAI <strong>Smile</strong>, presided over the launch of the Suvarnabhumi-Yangon<br />

fl ight of Thai <strong>Smile</strong> Airways and hosted a lucky<br />

draw to hand out free fl ight tickets for passengers on the<br />

fl ight. Apart from the daily fl ight to Yangon, THAI <strong>Smile</strong>, in<br />

collaboration with THAI Airways, also plans to have four<br />

direct fl ights to Mandalay per week.<br />

กระแสโลกออนไลน์ที่ติดแท็ก #มือเย็นเมืองเย็น ในเฟซบุ๊ค<br />

เรียกความสนใจจากผู้คนได้ไม่น้อย โครงการนี้เป็นความ<br />

ตั้งใจของกลุ่มคนเล็กๆในเชียงใหม่ที่เห็นคุณค่าของต้นไม้<br />

และใช้เรื่องสนุกๆ อย่างส่งคำาท้าให้เพื่อน 3 คน ร่วมปลูกต้นไม้<br />

และส่งคำาท้ากันต่อ กระจายไปในวงกว้างในแทบทุกสาขาอาชีพ<br />

ปลูกแล้วก็ไม่ใช่สักแต่ว่าอัพโหลด แท็กแล้วจบกันไป แต่มือ<br />

เย็นเมืองเย็นเน้นให้ความรู้ ความเข้าใจในการดูแลพันธุ์ไม้ให้<br />

เติบโตยั่งยืน แบบปลูกแล้วต้องรักและดูแล ไม่ปล่อยละเลยจน<br />

ตายไปในที่สุด<br />

พันธุ์ไม้ที่ปลูกจะเป็นพันธุ์ไม้พื้นถิ่นภาคเหนือที่เหมาะกับการ<br />

ปลูกในเมืองเชียงใหม่ ง่ายต่อการดูแลรักษา ทางกลุ่มยังแนะนำา<br />

ประโยชน์และสรรพคุณให้ด้วย อย่างเช่น ถ้าคุณปลูกมะค่าโมง<br />

ซึ่งเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดใหญ่ สูง 10-18 เมตร เมื่อโตขึ้นกิ่งก้าน<br />

จะใหญ่โต มีความแข็งแรงมาก และสามารถสร้างบ้านทาร์ซาน<br />

บนง่ามต้นมะค่าโมงได้ หรือโปร่งฟ้า ลอดฟ้า ที่สามารถเด็ดยอด<br />

อ่อนมาเคี้ยวกินเพื่อลดความอยากบุหรี่ลง<br />

นอกจากการปลูกต้นไม้แล้ว มือเย็นเมืองเย็นยังมีกิจกรรม<br />

อื่นๆ อย่างการร่วมพูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ เปิดรับพื้นที่สำ าหรับ<br />

การปลูกต้นไม้ มีดนตรีเล่นสด จบด้วยการแจกกล้าไม้หรือปลูก<br />

ต้นไม้ร่วมกัน จากจุดเริ่มต้นที่ต้องการปลูกต้นไม้ 2,000 ต้นด้วย<br />

มือของคนกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีใจรักจริง จนถึงวันนี้มีคนขอกล้าไม้<br />

จำานวนมากเพื่อไปปลูกให้เป็นป่าหรือสวนขนาดใหญ่ และ<br />

โครงการก็ยังดำาเนินต่อไปไม่มีหยุด ซึ่งเป็นการกระตุ้นจิตสำานึก<br />

For months a page entitled Meuyen has caught the attention of<br />

Thai facebookers far and wide. The guerilla project originated from<br />

a small group of people in Chiang Mai who wanted to promote the<br />

value of trees and greenery. They came up with the idea of challenging<br />

three friends to plant trees and pass on the challenge to their friends.<br />

The initiative has now become popular with people of all professions.<br />

This project is not only about planting to garner “likes”. The Meuyen<br />

(or Meuyen Muengyen) project aims to create understanding about<br />

sustainable ways of planting trees. No matter what type of plant, every<br />

life form needs attention. Chosen trees in this project are local species<br />

in Chiang Mai that are easy to take care of. The Meuyen people also<br />

provide basic knowledge about each tree’s benefits. For example, a<br />

local tree called Maka Mong (Afzelia xylocarpa) which can reach 10-<br />

18 metres when fully grown, has branches strong enough to build a<br />

treehouse that tarzan would be proud of. The Prong Fah or Lod Fah<br />

(Murraya Siamensis Craib) has leaves that can be chewed to reduce<br />

cravings for smoking.<br />

Apart from tree planting, Meuyen includes other activities including<br />

talks, open houses and live music. Most events end by handing out<br />

saplings or with tree planting. With an initial aim to plant 2,000 trees<br />

in Chiang Mai, the success of the Meuyen project has gone far beyond<br />

expectations. More and more people have joined in, and the project<br />

continues to propagate. Meuyen helps educate people in the simplest<br />

form. You just need some information and have a little bit of courage<br />
