December is an important time for the people of 

Thailand, as we celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 

birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This 

day is also the country’s national Father’s Day. I and 

the employees of THAI Smile Airways would like to wish 

His Majesty prosperity, health and happiness. May he long 

reign as the protector of the citizens of Thailand. 

This is also the time of year to relax and celebrate 

Christmas and the coming New Year. If you haven’t yet 

planned your end-of-year vacations, I encourage you to 

consider travelling within Thailand or to our nearby countries. 

THAI Smile has recently opened routes to the city of 

Mandalay and Yangon in Myanmar. There, one can vacation 

and make merit by visiting local temples for prosperity in 

the coming year. THAI Smile will also open routes from 

Bangkok to Changsha in Hunan Province, which has beautiful 

attractions like Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and 

Tianmen Mountain, also known as “Heaven’s Gate” and 

the ancient town of Fenghuang. If you choose to stay in 

Thailand, this issue of WE Smile has numerous suggestions 

on places to explore within the country. 

Because your journey is of utmost importance to us, THAI

พิพิธภัณฑผาในสมเด็จพระนางเจาสิริกิติ 

พระบรมราชินีนาถตั ้งอยู ในอาคารประวัติ- 

ศาสตรในพระบรมมหาราชวัง หองจัดแสดง 

ทั้ง 4 หองนําเสนอประวัติศาสตรของผาไทย 

ผลงานของสมาชิกมูลนิธิสงเสริมศิลปาชีพใน 

สมเด็จพระนางเจาสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ 

ผานการจัดแสดงแบบสมัยใหมที่มีการผสม 

ผสานภาพถายและมัลติมีเดีย 

The Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles 

is housed in a historical building 

within The Grand Palace. Four galleries 

highlight the history of Thai Textiles 

and works produced by members of 

the SUPPORT Foundation under Her 

Majesty’s Royal Patronage through 

modern exhibits, photography and 

multimedia presentations.

หากพิจารณาจากผลงานของชางฝมือของ 

สถาบันสิริกิติ์ที่นํามาจัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑ 

ศิลปแผนดิน พระที ่นั่งอนันตสมาคมแลว 

สุพรรณเภตราอาจเรียกไดวามีความโดดเดนกวาผลงาน 

อื่นอยูไมนอย เนื่องจากเปนผลงานที่ประกอบดวย 

ทักษะชางศิลปหลากแขนง ที่ตองใชชางฝมือถึง 73 คน 

และระยะเวลารังสรรคถึง 1 ป 5 เดือน 

สุพรรณเภตรามีทองเรือเปนงานถมทอง เสาครํ่าเงิน 

ครํ่าทอง ใบจําหลักฉลุทอง ที่ยอดเสาเปนธงลงยา หนา 

สําเภาจําหลักทองลงยาหนาอสุรกุมภัณฑ สวนตัวสําเภา 

นั้นรังสรรคขึ้นดวยหัตถศิลปโบราณหลากรูปแบบ 

ตั้งแตการลงยา การฉลุเงินและฉลุทอง การประดับปก 

แมลงทับ รวมถึงการลงคร่ําเงินและคร่ําทอง เนื่องจาก 

ทุกกระบวนการหัตถศิลปนั้นตองอาศัยความอดทน 

และความละเอียดออน ผลงานชิ้นนี้จึงตองรังสรรคโดย 

กลุมชางฝมือชั้นครูผูชํานาญการ เพื่อใหไดสําเภาทอง 

ที่งดงามวิจิตรเหนือใคร 

นอกจากสุพรรณเภตราแลว ทานสามารถชื่นชมความ 

วิจิตรตระการตาของผลงานของชางฝมือจากสถาบันสิริกิติ 

ไดที่พิพิธภัณฑศิลปแผนดิน พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม 

When visiting the works created by artisans of the 

Queen Sirikit Institute at Arts of the Kingdom Museum 

Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, one can not miss the 

Suphannabhetra. With 73 artisans from various fi elds, 

the piece took a period of seventeen months to complete. 

The Suphannabhetra is a model ship carved of gold 

neilloware. The hull is made of woven gold strips, the 

mast of damascened with hair-fi ne gold and silver 

wires, fl ags of enamel and a stern with various ornate 

carvings. The entire ship is made up of several different 

craftsmanship types, from jewel-toned insect wings, 

silver and gold inlay, to fi ne engraving and more. Each 

craft requires patience and delicacy, which only come 

from truly skilled master craftspeople and specialists. 

Using their talents in combination, the Suphannabhetra 

is a work of art unlike any other. 

In addition to the Suphannabhetra, more unique 

pieces are on display by the artisans of the Queen 

Sirikit Institute, Arts of the Kingdom Museum Ananta 

Samakhom Throne Hall.

Next, Monaco’s spectacular events work 

their magic. From the Formula One Grand 

Prix to the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters in 

tennis, from the Monaco Yatch Show to 

the Longines Global Champions Tour in 

Jumping, fans of any sport can find a top 

worldwide event happening in Monaco. 

Monaco’s harbor acts as a wide, versatile 

amphitheater where magnificent boats, jumping 

horses or Formula One cars take the

other. People walk from luxury boutiques to a fitness spa or to the beach. All in a very secure environment. The political stability of 

Monaco has been guaranteed by the Grimaldi dynasty since the 13 th Century. “I always enjoy walking the streets of Monaco alone, 

or meeting friends at an outside bar with no protection,” says one of Italy’s wealthiest men who chooses to live in Monaco. 

And if all this isn’t enough, the French and Italian countryside is right next door. “On your first day in Monaco, you can relax on the 

beach. On the second, you can drive to the nearby hills of French Provence. And on the third, you can get a taste of Italy by having 

lunch in San Remo,” says Guillaume Rose. “But people always come back to Monaco for our kindness and hospitality.” The elegance 

of luxury made to order is Monaco’s signature.

รวมถึงโครงการตางๆ ที่มุงชวยเหลือชางไทย นอกจากนี้ คุณสามารถ 

พบกับรูปปนชางหลากสีสันอีกโขลงใหญที่ยานเซ็นทรัล แบงคอก ใน 

นิทรรศการศิลปะเสนทางชางไทย 999 ที่จัดโดยเซ็นทรัล 

รวมกับขัวศิลปะ โดยงานนี้พรอมไฮไลต ‘ชางศิลป (ไทย-อิตาลี)’ 

หรือรูปปนชางที่สูงถึง 4.2 เมตรที่หลังจากจบนิทรรศการ ในวันที่ 

5 มกราคม 2559 แลวจะเดินทางไปโชวตัวในฐานะตัวแทนประเทศไทย 

ที่เมืองมิลาน ประเทศอิตาลีดวย 

Elephants have long been a symbol of Thailand since 

ancient times, and at the end of this year, several 

organisations joined hands to focus on elephant 

conservation through art exhibitions. One event is 

the Elephant Parade Bangkok 2015 exhibition held by 

Anantara Group and Elephant Parade®. This outdoor 

exhibition features 88 elephant sculptures painted 

by distinguished Thai and foreign artists. To celebrate 

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 88th birthday, 

this event will be on display at Siam Paragon from 

December 1-18, Asiatique from December 18, 

2015 - January 11, 2016 and Lumphini Park from 

January 15-29. After the exhibition, the sculptures 

will be auctioned to raise funds for the Golden 

Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation and other 

elephant-oriented initiatives. Another event is the 

Journey of 999 Elephants exhibition held by Central 

Group at Art Bridge Chiang Rai, which features 999 

painted elephant sculptures. The highlight is a 

4.2-meter ‘Chang Silp (Thai-Italy)’ Elephant that will 

travel to Milan, Italy, and represent Thailand after 

the exhibition.

Centre presents the new works of Denpong Wongsarat, a 

Thai artist known for the strangely iconic works that reflect 

conceptual ideas. This time, his works convey the themes 

of the pressure of uniformity and conformity in modern

Sun, sand and sea are the usual hallmarks of Phuket. 

As one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, the 

province’s main attractions draw crowds of beach-lovers to its 

coastlines. However, Mr Apirag Vanich, CEO of Vanich Group 

wants to change that with his newest venture—Vanich Farm— 

an agricultural tourism spot right in the centre of Phuket city. 

Spreading over 45 rai (17.8 acres) of land, Vanich Farm 

provides a family-friendly atmosphere that takes people to 

the heart of Thai agriculture. One of the farm’s main focus is 

sweet corn, a Thai variety that is grown without pesticides or 

chemical fertilizers. The corn is made into snacks, tea, milk, 

ice cream and more along with unique local produce like rice 

and mulberries. Other attractions include a vegetable patch 

and 140-year-old traditional Thai house that overlooks the 

fields. But this farm is not only about plants; rabbits, miniature 

cows, sheep and a family of albino buffaloes also make this 

place home. Be sure to snap a photo with Petch Chompoo 

(Pink Diamond), the handsome white water buffalo seen in the 

famous Thai film, ‘The Legend of King Naresuan’. 

Vanich Farm not only seeks to be a quality leisure 

destination for tourists, “I also want us to be a place of 

education for the local population, especially students. It’s 

important that they are able to see agriculture first hand,” 

says Mr Apirag Vanich. Producing healthy corn in the hot and 

humid climate of Phuket was no easy task, but after finding 

the right variety and soil preparations Vanich Farm seems to be 

(quite literally) growing strong. The farm exists as a testament 

to agricultural innovation and serves as an alternative for

กล่าวกันว่าชีวิตของชาวอีสานนั้นมีความผูกพันกับวัฒนธรรมข้าวอย่าง 

ลึกซึ ้งตั้งแต่จำาความได้ หลายคนยังคงจำารสชาติของข้าวที่แม่เคี้ยวให้ 

ละเอียดแล้วป้อนให้กินตั้งแต่ยังเป็นทารก ในขณะที่ท้องนากลายเป็น 

โรงเรียนแห่งแรกในชีวิตที่สอนทั้งเรื่องการหาเลี้ยงชีพ ลงแรงและแบ่งปัน

It’s said that life in the northeast of Thailand has been tied to 

rice for as long as anyone can remember. Most locals still recall 

their first taste of rice, crushed thoroughly and fed to them as a 

child. The field became their first school, teaching lessons on 

labour and sharing. But rice is not only a source of income and 

food, in the northeast, it is sacred. The worship of the Goddess of 

Rice or ‘Mae Phosop’ has since become a long standing tradition. 

Later, the worship of the Rice Goddess became intertwined with 

Buddhist culture. This was the start of the ‘Heat Sip Song’ religious 

rituals, which take place throughout the year to facilitate a good 

harvest. Merit making ceremonies are held in accordance to the 

rice planting calendar. For example the fireworks ceremony held 

on the sixth month before the wet season is said to help bring the 

rains, allowing the crops to be planted on schedule. The ‘Boon 

Khao Pradap Din’ festival in the ninth month is said to help the 

rice plants which are ‘pregnant’ grow healthily. When it is time to 

harvest in the beginning of the year, another ceremony is held to 

worship the Goddess of Rice. On the fourth month, the locals bring 

offerings of rice as a tribute to the country. During this festival, 

monks will help sow and bless certain rice seeds. 

Using the philosophy of Isan’s ties with Rice, Jim Thompson Farm

คงปฏิเสธไม่ได้ว่าความประทับใจแรกเริ่มเมื่อได้มาเยือน 

ร้านหนังสือ ‘คำานำา’ คือการได้เดินเข้าไปในตรอกเล็กๆ 

ก่อนที่จะพบบ้านไม้แบบไทยหลังใหญ่ตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ 

ตรงหน้า ซึ่งสิริวัฒน์ กุศลเลิศจริยา หนึ่งในผู้ก่อตั้งเองก็กล่าว 

ว่าเขาก็รู้สึกเช่นนั้นเหมือนกันเมื่อได้เห็นอาคารหลังนี้เป็นครั้ง 

แรก “หลังจากทำางานบริษัท แล้วก็ออกไปปั่นจักรยานอยู่พัก 

หนึ่ง ผมเองก็อยากทำาร้านหนังสืออยู่แล้ว ตอนแรกจะไปทำาที่ 

ขอนแก่นซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิด แต่พอได้มาเห็นบ้านหลังนี้แล้วชอบมาก 

แถมยังใกล้มหาวิทยาลัย และไม่ไกลจากกรุงเทพฯด้วย เพื่อนๆ

อ่านหนังสือในบรรยากาศสบายๆ ซึ่งทั้งคู่แย้มให้ฟังว่าในเร็วๆ 

นี้ อาจมีการเพิ่มเติมส่วนของแกลเลอรี่สำาหรับจัดแสดงผลงาน 

ศิลปะเข้ามาด้วย “ที่จริงร้านยังไม่เสร็จนะครับ บางคนมา 

อีกครั้งแล้วแปลกใจว่าร้านไม่เหมือนเดิม ซึ่งก็ดีเหมือนกันนะ

There is no denying that I was impressed 

when I first visited ‘Kumnumm’ bookstore. After 

a walk through a tiny alley way, a large wooden 

traditional Thai house greets you. One of the 

bookstore’s founders, Siriwat Kusollerdchariya, 

said he felt the same thing when seeing this 

building for the first time, “After working at a 

company and then going to bike for a while, 

I was already inclined to open a bookstore. At 

first I wanted to open one in my hometown of 

Khon Kaen, but then I saw this house. I loved it. 

It’s also near a university and not far from Bangkok 

so it’s easy for friends to drop by.” Siriwat and 

his partner Pasan Cheawjindakan decided to 

restore the former Tanin Prathomrat Royal House, 

which was built during the reign of King Rama VI, 

into Nakhon Pathom’s newest bookstore-cum-café. 

In additional to books on art, poetry, society 

and general literature from independent 

publishers (some of which can not even be found 

in Bangkok), Kumnumm is also a great place to 

have coffee. The café area serves homemade 

desserts to enjoy while comfortably reading a 

book. There are also plans to add a gallery for 

exhibits. “Things aren’t set in place yet, and a 

lot of people are surprised when they return and 

see that the shop is different. I think this is good, 

it’s as if this place is alive,” says Siriwat happily.

หากอยากเห็นกรุงเทพฯ จากมุมสูงแบบง่ายๆ คุณอาจจะเลือกเดินทางโดย 

รถไฟฟ้าเพื่อชมทิวทัศน์จากด้านบน ที่จะพาคุณผ่านอนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ 

ที่คลาคล่ำาไปด้วยผู้คน สถานีสยามที่เต็มไปด้วยวัยรุ่นแต่งตัวเก๋ ไปจนถึง 

สะพานตากสินที่เต็มไปด้วยเรือข้ามฟากรอรับส่ง แต่ถ้าหากคุณผ่านเส้นสาทร 

คุณจะสะดุดตากับอาคารหลังหนึ่งที่จะพาคุณย้อนเวลาไปสู่ยุคโคโลเนียลในแทบทันที 

อาคารที่เมื่อก่อนเคยเป็นอาคารหอการค้าไทย-จีน ที่ล้อมรอบด้วยตึกสูง 

เสียดฟ้าในย่านที่คึกคักที่สุดย่านหนึ่งของกรุงเทพฯนี้ ปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งของร้าน 

อาหารและโรงเรียนสอนทำาอาหาร Blue Elephant อาคารที่สร้างขึ้นในปีพ.ศ. 

2446 ซึ่งอยู่ในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวนั้น แรกเริ่ม 

เคยเป็นห้างสรรพสินค้าบอมเบย์ ในช่วงเวลานั้น ย่านสาทรถือเป็นหนึ่งในย่านหรู 

ของกรุงเทพฯ เนื่องจากอยู่ใกล้กับแม่น้ำา พระบรมมหาราชวัง รวมถึงโรงแรม 

โอเรียนเต็ลที่เหล่านักเขียนชื่อดังชอบมาเข้าพัก ช่วงนั้นเป็นยุคก่อนที่ถนนส่วนใหญ่ 

จะลาดยาง และรถยนต์ก็เพิ่งจะเข้ามาวิ่งในประเทศเพียง 3 ปีก่อนหน้านั้น และ 

รถยนต์ที่แล่นคู่ไปกับหาบเร่และคนเดินถนนก็อาจมีจำ านวนเพียง 300 คันเท่านั้น 

ปีพ.ศ. 2471 กลุ่มนักธุรกิจผู้มั่งคั่งเข้าซื้อกิจการห้างสรรพสินค้าบอมเบย์ที่เริ่ม 

จะทรุดโทรมในราคาถูก นั่นคือจุดเริ่มต้นของหอการค้าไทย-จีน แต่ถ้าจะนับจุด 

เริ่มต้นแบบเป็นทางการ คงเป็นเดือนมกราคม ปีพ.ศ. 2473 ที่พระบาทสมเด็จ 

พระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเสด็จฯเปิดอาคารสำานักงานใหญ่ของหอการค้าไทย-จีน 

อย่างเป็นทางการ ก่อนที่อาคารและประเทศไทยต้องเจอกับภัยครั้งใหญ่ นั่นก็คือ 

สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 เมื่อประเทศไทยโดนกองทัพญี่ปุ่นรุกรานในเดือนธันวาคม 

ปีพ.ศ. 2484 อาคารหลังนี้ถูกใช้เป็นกองบัญชาการของกองทัพญี่ปุ่น เมื่อสงคราม 

สิ้นสุดลง อาคารหอการค้าไทย-จีน ก็ได้กลับคืนสู่เจ้าของเดิม และถูกใช้เป็น 

สำานักงานและที่จัดเลี้ยง จนกระทั่งมีการเปิดอาคารไทยซีซี อาคารกระจกแบบ 

โมเดิร์นที่ได้กลายเป็นฉากหลังแบบสมัยใหม่ให้กับอาคารโคโลเนียลหลังนี้ 

หลังจากถูกปล่อยให้ทรุดโทรมมานาน อาคารหอการค้าไทย-จีน ก็ถูกพลิก 

ฟื้นขึ้นมาอีกครั้งพร้อมอัตลักษณ์ใหม่ในปีพ.ศ. 2545 โดยตัวอาคารได้รับการบูรณะ 

และกลายเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนสอนทำาอาหารและร้านอาหาร Blue Elephant สาขา 

กรุงเทพฯ แบรนด์ Blue Elephant ที่ก่อตั้งโดยเชฟนูรอ โซะมณี สเต็ปเป้ เชฟชาว 

ไทยนี้เปิดร้านสาขาแรกในเบลเยี่ยม เมื่อเชฟนูรอตัดสินใจกลับมายังมาตุภูมิ เธอ 

ก็ได้พาแบรนด์มาตั้งอยู่ที่อาคารหลังนี้ที่เธอชอบมาก แต่ก็แน่นอนว่าด้วยความ 

ที่เป็นอาคารเก่าแก่ เธอจึงต้องใช้แรงกายแรงใจอย่างมากในการบูรณะอาคาร 

หอการค้าไทย-จีนขึ้นมาใหม่ 

“ต้องซ่อมแซมเยอะเลยค่ะตอนนั้น” เชฟนูรอเล่าให้ฟัง “ผนังด้านในเคยทาสีแดง 

เข้มที่ดูไม่ได้เลย เราก็เลยปรับให้ดูสว่างและโปร่งมากยิ่งขึ้น ส่วนด้านนอกนั้นยังคง 

เดิมไว้ทุกอย่าง อาคารหลังนี้เป็นอาคารสุดพิเศษที่ตั้งอยู่ในทำ าเลทอง และเราก็โชคดี 

มากที่ได้มาตั้งร้านและโรงเรียนสอนทำาอาหารในอาคารประวัติศาสตร์แห่งนี้” 

ปัจจุบันนี้ อาคารชั้นบนเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนสอนทำาอาหารที่เป็นจุดหมายของ 

คนจากทั่วโลกที่อยากเรียนรู้ศิลปะการทำาอาหารไทยอันแสนละเอียดอ่อน ส่วนพื้นที่ 

ที่เหลือนั้นเป็นส่วนของร้านอาหาร โดยประกอบด้วยห้องอาหารส่วนตัวบริเวณปีก 

ของอาคาร และ Blue Bar ที่ตั้งอยู่ตรงส่วนหน้าของอาคารโดยหันเข้าหาถนนสาทร 

แต่กระนั้น กลิ่นอายของความลึกลับยังคงอบอวลอยู่ในอาคารเก่าแก่แห่งนี้ 

พนักงานของ Blue Elephant มักจะไหว้สามทิศก่อนที่จะเดินข้ามธรณีประตูทุกครั้ง

Travel along Bangkok’s modern skytrain 

and you’ll see some of the city’s most 

recognisable scenes from a bird’s eye 

perspective. There’s the bustling roundabout 

that circles Victory Monument, the 

hip streetwear and students around Siam, 

and the river boats that gather at Saphan 

Taksin. If you happen to roll by Sathorn 

station however, there is one place that 

seems to pull you right back into the 

colonial era. 

Surrounded by glass skyscrapers and 

one of Bangkok’s busiest thoroughfares is 

the former Thai Chine Building, which today 

houses the Blue Elephant Restaurant and 

Cooking School. Built in 1903, around the 

time of King Rama V, the Thai Chine Building 

opened as the Bombay Department Store. 

At the time, Sathorn was known as one 

of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in 

Bangkok, within close proximity to the river, 

the Royal Palace and a favourite rest stop 

for passing authors, the Oriental Hotel. This 

was an era before many of the city streets 

were paved, with cars having been introduced 

to the country just three years prior. Rattling 

alongside rickshaws and pedestrians, it was 

estimated that there were only 300 

automobiles in the country at the time. 

In 1928 a group of affluent businessmen 

purchased the aging Bombay Department 

Store at a bargain price. This was the start 

of the Thai Chinese Chamber of Commerce, 

but it wasn’t until January 1930 that His 

Majesty King Rama VII would inaugurate 

the building as the Chamber of Commerce’s 

Headquarters. World War II was a tough 

time for the building. As Thailand was 

invaded by Japan in December 1941, 

the Thai Chine Building was used by the 

Imperial Japanese Army and made into a 

Command Centre. After the war, the 

structure was returned to its former 

owners, and was used for offices and 

functions until the opening of the 

Thai CC Building, a modernised glass 

structure that now give the Thai Chine 

Building a mirrored backdrop. 

Falling into some disrepair over the 

years, In 2002 the Thai Chine Building was 

once again given a new identity. It was 

fully restored and transformed into the Blue 

Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant in 

Bangkok. The Blue Elephant brand, 

created by Thai Chef Nooror Somany 

Steppe opened their first restaurant in 

Belgium. When returning to her home 

country, bringing the brand to this historic 

location was a labour of love. 

“There was a lot to be done,” says 

Chef Nooror, “The interior walls used to 

be painted a horrible dark red colour. We 

made it more light and airy, but we kept 

the exterior exactly as the original. It’s a 

special place in the best location in the 

city, and we are lucky to be the 

custodians of this historic building.” 

Today, the top floor of the building 

houses the cooking school where people 

from all over the world come to learn the 

intricacies of Thai cuisine. The rest of the 

house serves as parts of the restaurant, 

with more private areas tucked along its 

HERITAGE 

wings and the Blue Bar which stands on 

the building’s bay facing Sathorn Road. 

An air of mystery still surrounds the 

old structure. The Blue Elephant Staff are 

known to raise their hand in a Thai ‘wai’ 

towards three directions upon entering 

the doorway. It’s a traditional belief and 

an act of respect to the building’s spirits. 

The ‘spirits’ are not your usual haunting 

type, but said to be more inclined to 

protect and bless. This is easy to believe, 

considering how their ‘home’ stands 

strong against changing tides.

After the success of the ‘Connectivity’ festival which

Thailand Kingdom of Light show at Ratchaprasong is 

back for a second year. This December, the concept is 

‘THAI’S ENLIGHTENING MOMENTS’ to help spark delight 

and strengthen the bonds between people. Once again, 

it’s the time of year to meet friends and family, watch the 

lights and mingle in the festive atmosphere. 

Thailand The Kingdom of Light 2015 is a unique light 

festival due to the interactive systems put in place. Lights 

change and react to the viewer’s movements, resulting 

in a true ‘personal experience’ for each audience. This 

year’s festival will take place at various points in the 

Ratchaprasong area, including the Skywalk that connects 

to the BTS Stations of Siam and Chidlom, the Erawan 

Shrine pavilion and in front of Gaysorn Plaza.

ปรากฏอยู่นั้นเป็นตัวแทนของพลังของคนไทยที่ไม่หวั่นไหวแม้ต้องเจอ 

กับวิกฤต การแสดงไฟในจุดนี้จะแสดงทุกต้นชั่วโมงตั้งแต่วันที่

A bright light extravaganza awaits you on the Skywalk. 

Based on the concept of ‘a beautiful sky under the 

rainbow’ to reflect the future of Thailand, various colours 

represent the power of the people, unwavering and 

harmonious even when faced with crisis. The show lasts 

from December 15, 2015 to January 5 2016.

lighting designers in Thailand and 

students from the King Mongkut’s 

University of Technology Thonburi, 

Thailand the Kingdom of Light 2015 

is also supported by the Thailand 

Convention and Exhibition Bureau 

(TCEB) and the Amsterdam Light 

Festival. This allows international 

lighting designers to come and exhibit 

their work, as well as encourages the 

exchange of ideas and knowledge 

between artists.

เรื่องสายตามากยิ่งขึ้น “ที่เจอบ่อยคือตาแห้งเพราะจ้องหน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์ 

หรือโทรศัพท์มือถือ แล้วจดจ่อจนลืมกะพริบตา ลองพยายามกะพริบตา 

บ่อยๆ ก็จะดีขึ้น นอกจากนี้อย่าจ้องจอสว่างๆ ในห้องมืด เดี๋ยวนี้เราชอบเล่น 

โทรศัพท์มือถือก่อนนอน อันตรายมากครับ” 

When you consider the dreams of a seven-year-old, many 

people may be dismissive. But for Master Bobi, founder of 

the Isoptik Hi-End Eyeglasses Centre, his dreams as a sevenyear-old 

boy was the start of a global brand. “My father was 

very skilled in making glasses, and the lenses he cut were 

always comfortable to wear. One night I had a dream that 

the leaders of foreign countries boarded a plane to have their 

glasses made in Thailand. When I woke up, I told everyone 

at home who would listen. Everyone laughed except for my 

father who told me, ‘if you believe, anything is possible.” 

The words of his father served as motivation, and Master 

Bobi continued to practice the art of 3D lens cutting. He soon 

established what would become the world famous eyeglasses 

centre, Isoptik. Not long after, Isoptik was awarded the 

Premium Products of Thailand label by the Thai Industrial 

Standards Institute and Ministry of Industry. 

Being a premium brand usually comes with a steep 

price, but the cost of the glasses at Isoptik are based on 

the principles of reason, “the problem with progressive 

lenses is that there are several factors which may cause 

discomfort. Perhaps the positioning isn’t right and distorts 

vision, or the frame may not suit the wearer. After studying 

this issue I created an experimental style of progressive 

lenses for my customers to try, allowing them to choose the 

lenses for themselves.” This was the start of the Isoptik’s 

Super Progressive Lenses. The lenses were specially made 

as a partnership between Isoptik and two industry giants, 

Rodenstock and Carl Zeiss in Germany.Each pair of glasses 

from Isoptik are specially crafted for the individual. “This is 

the only way to have sharp vision and extremely comfortable 

glasses at the same time.” 

Master Bobi says that while the Super Progressive Lenses 

are suitable for people aged forty to ninety, they are also 

popular with the younger generation who spend a lot of 

time staring at a computer monitor. “These days, there are 

developments in progressive lenses which reduce eye strain 

for younger people too.” With lifestyle changes, the new 

generation has a new set of problems with eyesight. “Dry 

eyes are a common problem because people tend to stare 

at a monitor or phone screen. They are concentrating and 

forget to blink. It’s important to blink frequently, and also to 

not stare at a bright screen in a dark room. People like to 

use their mobiles before going to bed, which is very bad for 

your eyesight.”

It’s said that there is no place in the country that has not seen the footprints of 

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Along with Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and 

other members of the royal family, The King has visited the deepest wildernesses of 

Thailand to see his people’s problems firsthand. This helped in planning and 

developing the future of the nation, and sparked the Royal Projects to help local Thais 

find careers and support their families in a sustainable manner.

และปฏิบัติเป็นการส่วนพระองค์ โดยมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญสาขาต่างๆ

The Royal Projects 

These projects mainly focus on the development of 

Northern Thailand. His Majesty the King stressed the 

importance of halting deforestation and the opium trade. 

Locals were educated on crop rotation and economic 

farming for animal feed. 

The Projects Initiated According to His Majesty’s Wishes 

These projects are implemented by His Majesty 

King Bhumibol, in which he conducts the studies and 

experiments himself with the recommendations of 

specialists. They are initiated under His Majesty’s own 

private funds. Once the projects prove beneficial to the 

public, His Majesty passes them on the government for 

further development. 

The Projects Under Royal Patronage 

These projects are run by private sectors under the guidelines 

and recommendations of His Majesty The King. 

Royal Initiative Projects 

These are projects in which His Majesty Initiates, before 

collaborating with government agencies for implementation.

In addition to improving the lives of residents, the Royal Projects are learning resources for 

agricultural development and local traditions. These places are also beautifully landscaped 

and easy to visit. Here are the spots we recommend for the season.

สถานีเกษตรหลวงอ่างขาง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ 

พื้นที่ที่เคยเป็นไร่ฝิ่น ณ ดอยอ่างขาง อำาเภอฝาง จังหวัด 

เชียงใหม่ ได้รับการพลิกฟื้นให้กลายเป็นพื้นที่เพาะปลูกพืชผัก 

ผลไม้เมืองหนาว เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านซึ่งเป็นชาวไทยภูเขาได้มีรายได้ 

และสามารถพึ่งพาตนเองได้อย่างยั่งยืน สถานีเกษตรหลวงอ่างขาง 

ที่เป็นสถานีวิจัยแห่งแรกของมูลนิธิโครงการหลวงเป็นพื้นที่

เพื่อแก้ปัญหาการตัดไม้ทำาลายป่า ซึ่งส่งผลให้เกิดภาวะแล้ง 

จัดในฤดูร้อนและน้ำาป่าไหลหลากในฤดูฝน พระบาทสมเด็จ 

พระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ก่อตั้งศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนา 

ภูพานขึ้นที่อำาเภอเมือง จังหวัดสกลนคร เพื่อเป็นศูนย์กลาง 

ในการศึกษาพัฒนาป่าไม้และเป็นแบบจำาลองสำาหรับโครงการ 

พัฒนาในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ที่นี่โดดเด่นเรื่องการพัฒนา 

ปศุสัตว์จนได้ผลลัพธ์คือสามดำาภูพาน ได้แก่ โคเนื้อภูพาน 

ไก่ดำาภูพาน และสุกรภูพาน 

ภาคกลาง 

โครงการชั่งหัวมัน จังหวัดเพชรบุรี 

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงใช้พระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ 

ซื้อที่ดินจากราษฎรบริเวณใกล้อ่างเก็บน้ำาหนองเสือ บ้านหนอง 

คอไก่ อำาเภอท่ายาง จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ประมาณ 250 ไร่ มาทำา 

เป็นโครงการตัวอย่างในการพัฒนาการเกษตรและปศุสัตว์แบบ 

บูรณาการ เพื่อพลิกฟื้นพื้นที่ที่แห้งแล้งให้กลับมามีชีวิตอีกครั้ง 

โครงการนี้เรียกอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า ‘บ้านไร่ของในหลวง’ 

Northern Thailand 

Royal Angkhang Station Project, Chiang Mai 

Located on Doi Ang Khang (mountain) in Fang District, 

Chiang Mai, this former opium field has been turned 

into a place to cultivate cold-weather vegetables. The 

crops now aid the mountain-dwelling natives, improving 

self-reliance and sustainability. This project helps to test 

temperate species of plants as crops, including 

strawberries which were not native to Thailand. 

Doi Angkhang is ideal for those who want to enjoy nature 

whether it’s viewing the lush green tea plantations or 

absorbing the mountain fog. 

Northeastern Thailand 

Phu Phan Royal Development Study Centre, Sakon Nakhon 

The Phu Phan Royal Development Study Centre is located 

in the Phu Phan district in Sakon Nakhon. This project was 

made to solve the issues of Northeastern deforestation, which 

causes droughts in summer and flash floods during the 

rainy season. As a model for developmental projects in the 

Northeast, they have been outstandingly successful in breeding 

livestock. The three most famous are the ‘three blacks’ 

consisting of Black Chickens, Black Pigs and Black Cattle. 

Central Thailand 

Chang Hua Man Project, Phetchaburi 

His Majesty The King used his own resources to purchase 

land from the villagers near the Nong Sua reservoir in Tha 

Yang district of Phetchaburi Province. The project spans 

250 rai (99 acres) and develops both agriculture and 

livestock farming to aid in reforming arid lands. The project 

also goes by another nickname, ‘Homestead of The King’.

ศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาอ่าวคุ้งกระเบน จังหวัดจันทบุรี 

เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับพระราชดำาริของพระบาทสมเด็จ 

พระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่ทรงโปรดให้จัดทำาโครงการพัฒนาอาชีพการ 

ประมงและการเกษตรขึ้นที่ชายฝั่งทะเลจันทบุรี ทางจังหวัด 

จันทบุรีจึงร่วมมือกับหน่วยงานต่างๆในการก่อตั้งศูนย์ 

ศึกษาการพัฒนาอ่าวคุ้งกระเบนขึ้นที่ตำาบลคลองขุด อำาเภอ 

ท่าใหม่ นอกจากจะมีสะพานไม้สำาหรับเดินศึกษาป่าชายเลน 

แล้ว ที่นี่ยังมีสถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำาเฉลิมพระเกียรติ 6 รอบ 

พระชนมพรรษาให้ได้ชมกันด้วย 

ภาคใต้ 

ศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาพิกุลทอง จังหวัดนราธิวาส 

เพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาน้ำาขังตลอดปีของจังหวัดนราธิวาสซึ่งเป็นที่ 

ลุ่มต่ำาตามแนวพระราชดำาริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว 

หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องได้ก่อตั้งศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาพิกุลทองขึ้น 

ที่ตำาบลกะลุวอเหนือ อำาเภอเมือง จังหวัดนราธิวาส เพื่อให้เป็น 

แหล่งเรียนรู้ด้านการเกษตรแบบผสมผสาน โดยมีทั้งแปลงงาน 

ทดลองสำาหรับที่ลุ่ม ที่ดอน รวมถึงพื้นที่อ่างเก็บน้ำาและพื้นที่ 

สวนยางให้ได้เรียนรู้เรื่องเกษตรกรรมในสภาพภูมิประเทศที่ 

แตกต่างกันออกไป 

Eastern Thailand 

Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development Study Centre, Chanthaburi 

To comply with the initiatives of His Majesty The King, 

several organisations in Chanthaburi worked together to 

develop the fishing and agricultural industry in the coastal 

region. This was the start of Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development 

Study Centre in Khlong Khud Sub-district, Tha Mai District. 

Aside from a walking path through the mangrove forest, 

there is also the The Sixth Cycle Birthday Anniversary 

Celebration Aquarium to see aquatic life. 

Southern Thailand 

Pikun Thong Royal Development Study Centre, Narathiwat 

Created to resolve the issue of year-round flooding in the lower 

lands of Narathiwat, local agencies established the Pikun Thong 

Royal Development Study Centre located in Karoo Wor Nua 

Sub-district, Mueang District, Narathiwat Province. This centre 

studies agriculture in different terrains, such as waterlogged soil 

and lowlands, as well as improve on rubber tree plantations.

To many, Pattani province conjures up a vague and 

obscured image, often seen as a grey area. However, in the 

eyes of the locals this former capital of an ancient empire, 

which is now one of Thailand’s southernmost provinces, is filled

works of local artists and students from Prince of Songkhla 

University Pattani Campus, exhibited in the recent Landscape

Looking throughout the history of mankind, back when 

we lived scattered around the globe without connections to one 

another, humans still had a distinct similarity: tattoo culture. 

Nearly every tribe on earth has a history of rituals or beliefs 

connected to tattooing. This includes the Maori people of the 

Polynesian Islands, Australia and New Zealand to the women 

of Papua New Guinea where tattooing starts at five years of age 

with more being added as years go by. There are the traditional 

Filipino tattoos, and various African tribes (who use embossing 

techniques to stand out on darker shades of skin), Celtic People 

in Europe, and of course the traditional tattoos in Thailand and 

other countries in Southeast Asia. Around the world, there seems 

to be a silent mutual agreement and appreciation for turning 

living skin into canvasses.

นกนางแอ่นบ่งบอกถึงอิสรภาพ ลายสมอเรือ และลายต่างๆ ซึ่งก็ 

มีสีสันลวดลายชัดเจน ถือเป็นการกำาเนิดของลายสักแบบที่เรียกว่า 

Old School ซึ่งหมายถึงลายสักสองมิติ สีสันสดใส และมีเนื้อหา 

เกี่ยวพันกับผู้สักอย่างแน่นแฟ้น 

สักสีเพื่อศักดิ์ศรี 

ประเทศญี่ปุ่นมีวัฒนธรรมการสักที่น่าสนใจมากที่สุด เพราะการ 

สักแบบดั้งเดิมที่เรียกว่า Irezumi นั้นเดิมทีหมายความถึงสถานะ 

ทางสังคมของผู้ที่ถูกสัก ก่อนจะพัฒนามาเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการ 

ถูกลงโทษ และกลายมาเป็นศิลปะภาพวาด รวมถึงการสักแบบ 

sleeve หรือสักเต็มหัวไหล่ไปจนถึงข้อมืออันเป็นสัญลักษณ์อันแสน 

โดดเด่นของรอยสักประเภทนี้ จนกระทั่งในยุคที่รัฐบาลต้องการ 

แสดงความเป็นอารยะให้กับประเทศตะวันตกเห็น ภาพลักษณ์ของ 

รอยสักจึงถูกเหมารวมไปกับภาพลักษณ์ของยากูซ่า ตั้งแต่ปี 2012 

ผู้ว่าเมืองโอซาก้าได้รณรงค์ให้องค์กรธุรกิจต่างๆ ปลอดคนมีรอย 

สัก และชาวญี่ปุ่นก็ตื่นตัวกับเรื่องนี้มากจนกระทั่งกลายเป็นกฎ 

กลายๆ ว่า ห้ามคนมีรอยสักลงแช่ออนเซ็นสาธารณะเลยทีเดียว 

รอยสักของประเทศญี่ปุ่นจึงมีความหมายสุดโต่งไปในแง่ที่ว่า ผู้สัก 

ต้องตัดสินใจสักเพราะรักในรอยสักอย่างแท้จริง เพราะมีโอกาส 

เสี่ยงที่จะไม่มีงานทำา และไม่ได้รับการยอมรับ หรือผู้สักต้องการเข้า 

ร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในสมาชิกแก๊งยากูซ่า จึงตัดสินใจสักเพื่อให้ได้มา 

ซึ่งศักดิ์ศรีในแก๊งดังกล่าว 

Growing Pains 

The ‘reason’ behind the process of tattooing is 

surprisingly similar in almost every country. The 

tattoo is used to prove strength, maturity and 

social status. Men or women must prove to the 

tribe that they have grown enough to be 

responsible. For men, it is to show that they 

are ready to protect their future, while for 

women, they are ready to bear children. The 

physical pain they have to endure is symbolic 

of this new chapter. 

Inked Belief 

Apart from being used as a symbol for coming 

of age, tattoos (including Thai traditional yantra 

tattoo rituals) are believed to invite a sacred spirit 

to protect the receiver. At times, these beliefs 

also include giving the tattooed immortal life or 

protection from physical harm. Tattoos are also 

used to console youths who have to fight in wars 

to protect their cities and families. 

Transition Period 

Sailing out of Europe, people found new and 

different civilisations. Most Europeans did not 

have a long standing culture of tattooing. 

However, sailors spread the tattoo culture across 

the continent. On long journeys, they used their 

time on board tattooing themselves. The graphics 

are of personal symbols, hearts represent their 

grief departing from lovers, sparrows mean 

freedom, anchors and other bright-coloured 

totems have their specific meaning to the tattooed. 

Pride from Coloured Tattoos 

Japan has some of the most interesting stories 

on tattoo culture. The original tattoo ritual called 

‘Irezumi’ represented the social status of the 

tattooed. It developed into a form of punishment 

before finally becoming an art form. The famous 

‘sleeve’ tattoo is a popular feature of Japanese tattoo 

art. When the government wanted to ‘westernize’ 

the country, the tattoo became a symbol of the 

Japanese mafia (Yakuza). In 2012, the mayor of 

Osaka launched a ‘No Tattoo in the Workplace’ 

campaign to combat the mafia. Tattoos were 

further banned from Japanese public hot springs. 

Those who did have tattoos risked becoming 

jobless, which meant only people with great 

passion or a connection to the Yakuza would 

continue the art.

อาจกล่าวได้ว่า พรมแดนของรอยสักในโลกยุคใหม่นั้นไม่ชัดเจน และขึ้นอยู่กับ 

ปัจเจกบุคคลมากกว่าเหตุผลเพื่อพิสูจน์ตัวเองหรือต้องการการยอมรับจากกลุ่ม 

เหมือนสมัยก่อน

พัฒนาการของรอยสักนั้นเริ่มต้นจากเป็นการพิสูจน์ตนเองเพื่อได้รับการยอมรับ

From Old School to New School 

New trends and approaches to tattooing are hard 

to predict. These days, people decide to tattoo their 

body according to personal experiences or preferences 

rather than ritual or belief. 

Tattoos can vary from portraits, quotes or text, 

sketches, symbols or tribal traditional tattoos that 

hold some meaning to the bearer. One can say that 

the new trends in tattoos have no borders, depending 

only on the bearer and not on social status or ritual. 

Different Time, Different Meaning 

Tattoo culture starts with the need for acceptance. It 

has transformed through time as an outlawed art to 

a form of fashion and a way to record memories. For 

some, it has even become an addiction. No matter 

what the tattoo represents, those devoted to adoring

เฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ ราชพฤกษ์ 2549 ที่ 

จัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกได้เป็นอย่างดี โดย 

มหกรรมพืชสวนโลกนั้นจัดขึ้นเนื่องใน 

โอกาสมหามงคลสมัยที่พระบาทสมเด็จ 

พระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 

60 ปี ในพ.ศ. 2549 อีกทั้งยังทรงเจริญ 

พระชนมายุ 80 พรรษาด้วย

เนื่องจากมหกรรมพืชสวนโลกเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ ราชพฤกษ์ 2549 

ได้รับผลตอบรับอย่างดี คณะรัฐมนตรีในยุคนั้นจึงมีการแต่งตั้งให้ 

สถาบันวิจัยและพัฒนาพื้นที่สูง (องค์การมหาชน) เข้ามาดูแลพื้นที่ 

ที่ใช้จัดงาน ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในศูนย์วิจัยเกษตรหลวงเชียงใหม่ ตำ าบลแม่เหียะ 

อำาเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยมุ่งพัฒนาพื้นที่ขนาด 468 ไร่ 3 งาน 

10 ตารางวาแห่งนี้ ให้กลายเป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้เรื่องพืชสวน อีกทั้งยัง 

เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางเกษตรและวัฒนธรรมของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ด้วย 

‘อุทยานหลวงราชพฤกษ์’ หรือ ‘สวนแห่งราชันย์’ จึงถือกำาเนิดขึ้น 

จนถึงปัจจุบันนี้ อุทยานหลวงราชพฤกษ์ที่มีอายุ 9 ปีก็ยังคงพร้อม 

ต้อนรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยี่ยมเยือนอยู่เสมอตลอดทั้งปี โดยเฉพาะใน 

ช่วงก่อนถึงเดือนธันวาคมที่พนักงานรวมถึงคนสวนของอุทยานฯต้อง 

ทำางานหนักเป็นพิเศษเพื่อเตรียมตัวสำาหรับเทศกาลชมสวนประจำาปีที่มัก 

จะรวบรวมพืชพรรณสวยๆ จากโครงการหลวงทั่วประเทศมาให้ได้ชมกัน 

อย่างจุใจ จึงไม่แปลกที่แต่ละปีจะมีนักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วประเทศ (รวมถึง 

ทั่วโลก) เดินทางมาเที่ยวชมอุทยานแห่งนี้ถึงหลายแสนคน 

อุทยานหลวงราชพฤกษ์ แบ่งพื้นที่ออกเป็นส่วนๆ โดยนอกจาก 

สวนไทยที่จัดแสดงพืชเขตร้อนชื้นมากกว่า 1,900 ชนิด ทั้งไม้ผล 

ไม้ยืนต้น ไม้ดอกไม้ประดับ โดยเฉพาะกล้วยไม้ สมุนไพร รวมถึงพันธุ์ ไม้ 

หายากที่จัดเป็นหมวดหมู่แยกตามสภาพที่เหมาะแก่การเจริญเติบโต 

นอกจากนี้ อุทยานหลวงราชพฤกษ์ยังมีสวนองค์กรเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ 

จากองค์กรต่างๆ ทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน รวมถึงรัฐวิสาหกิจให้ได้ชม 

กันด้วย โดยสวนจากองค์กรทั้ง 23 แห่งนี้จะนำาเสนอแนวพระราชดำาริ 

ที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับการเกษตร และการพัฒนาในด้านต่างๆ รวมทั้งปรัชญา 

เศรษฐกิจพอเพียงของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ถัดมาอีกส่วนจะเป็น 

พื้นที่ของสวนนานาชาติเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ ที่มิตรประเทศ 22 ประเทศ 

ได้จัดขึ้นเพื่อฉลอง วโรกาสมหามงคลที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว 

Since the first edition in 2006 received tremendous public 

praise, Thailand’s cabinet authorized the Highland Research and 

Development Institute (Public Organization) to manage the area, 

situated in the Chiang Mai Royal Agricultural Station in Mae-Hia, 

Muang District, Chiang Mai province. The space of 80 hectares 

was transformed into a learning centre for botanical agriculture 

and an agro-tourism attraction for Chiang Mai. This was the birth 

of ‘Royal Rajapruek’, which could be translated in Thai as ‘Garden 

of the King’. 

For nine years, the Royal Park Rajapruek welcomed tourists 

with open arms all year long. Before every December, the staff of 

the royal park prepares for the annual flower festival, showcasing 

exotic flora from the Royal Projects nationwide. Its no surprise why 

local and international tourists flock to Chiang Mai during this period. 

The park sees several hundred thousand visitors a year. 

The Royal Park Rajapruek is divided into zones. Apart from Thai 

and tropical gardens with more than 1,900 plant species including 

fruit trees, flowers, orchids, herbs and exotic plants, while other 

plants are categorized into zones according to their native area. 

The royal park features 23 corporate gardens of public and private 

organisations which demonstrate His Majesty’s agricultural and 

development projects. Many gardens reflect the idea of sufficient 

economy. Next to this section are 22 international gardens from 

the nations that joined in the great celebrations of 2006. In other 

words, the Royal Park Rajapruek provides a glimpse to other 

corners of the world without leaving Thailand.

At the heart of the royal park is the 

Royal Pavilion, built using Lanna-styled 

architecture it refl ects the ingenuity of 

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 

farming. The Royal Pavilion, which can be 

translated as ‘the workplace of the king’, 

appealing to His Majesty King Bhumibol 

Adulyadej’s status as the king who 

remains in the heart of Thai people. 

Apart from exquisite details created by 

local artisans, the walls inside features 

delicate paintings by national artist 

Preecha Thaothong, portraying His Majesty 

King Bhumibol Adulyadej at work. The 

paintings sum up the royal activities 

practised by His Majesty King Bhumibol 

Adulyadej during His 60 years on the 

throne, so that Thai and foreign visitors 

can learn about His royal benevolence to 

the Thai people. Outside, the Royal Pavilion 

is surrounded by a pool which features a 

variety of local and international lotuses. 

This year, the annual fl ora festival is 

held under the theme of ‘Flora of the 

Queen.’ Apart from the showcases of 

winter fl owers from more than 20 Royal 

Projects, the festival also has a new-theory 

garden that demonstrates self-suffi cient 

living, as well as a photogenic fl ower 

tunnel and fl ower garlands. The festival 

runs from December 1, 2015 to February 

29, 2016.

ดิศกุล พระธิดาในสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ

พระนครหลังจากที่เกิดความไม่สงบอันเนื่อง 

มาจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองในปี พ.ศ. 

2475 แม้ ‘วังวรดิศ’ บนถนนหลานหลวงซึ่ง 

เป็นสถานที่ที่ถูกกล่าวถึงในข้อความข้างต้นอาจ 

เป็นที่รู้จักในฐานะที่ประทับของเชื้อพระวงศ์ชั้น 

สูง แต่หากมีโอกาสได้ไปเยือนแล้ว จะพบว่า 

ท่ามกลางร่มไม้ที่กลั่นกรองความวุ่นวายจาก 

ภายนอก สิ่งปลูกสร้างแบบยุคก่อนที่ตั้งเด่นเป็น 

สง่านั้นกลับให้ความอบอุ่นที่ผิดแปลกไปจากวัง 

เจ้านายพระองค์อื่นอย่างน่าอัศจรรย์ 

“After my father stepped onto the 

boat, I saw brothers, sisters, nephews 

and servants all crying with joy. My 

father was happy as he went to pay 

respect to the house shrine before sitting 

down on the porch and calling me over 

to say, ‘Phun my child, this is home’. He 

relaxed and turned up the palms of his 

hands.” This is a quote from the writings 

of Mom Chao Phunphitsamai Ditsakun 

daughter of Prince Ditsawarakuman 

Damrong Rajanubhab, when he returned 

to the capital during a time of unrest 

caused by a governmental change in 

1932. The text referred to Varadis Palace 

on Larn Luang Road which was a known 

residence of Thai royalty. If one should 

visit today, you’ll notice that amongst 

the trees that block out the city’s chaos, 

is an elegant retreat of unusual warmth 

unlike any other royal palace.”

ปีพ.ศ. 2454 ออกแบบโดยมร. คาร์ล ดอห์ริ่ง สถาปนิกชาว 

เยอรมันซึ่งมีผลงานการออกแบบมากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวังบางขุน- 

พรหม (ที่ตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยในปัจจุบัน) 

ในสมเด็จฯ เจ้าฟ้าบริพัตรสุขุมพันธ์ กรมพระนครสวรรค์วรพินิต 

ตัวตึกมีลักษณะก่ออิฐถือปูน ออกแบบในสไตล์อาร์ตนูโว ดังจะเห็น 

ได้จากลวดลายปูนปั้นดอกไม้ตามกรอบพระแกลและพระทวาร 

รวมไปถึงลักษณะของหลังคาลาดสูงที่ทำาให้กลายเป็นห้องเก็บของ 

ใต้หลังคาได้ ลักษณะแผนผังของตัวอาคารที่มีลักษณะไม่สมมาตร 

นั้นสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงรูปแบบความนิยมของสถาปัตยกรรม 

ในช่วงปลายรัชสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ได้เป็นอย่างดี 

ด้วยความสนพระทัยในการศึกษาด้านประวัติศาสตร์โดย 

เฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ จึงจะสังเกตได้ว่า 

ถึงแม้ตัวพระตำาหนักจะค่อนไปทางศิลปะตะวันตกตามแบบ 

พระราชนิยมในยุคนั้น ทว่าข้าวของเครื่องใช้ สิ่งของตกแต่ง รวมไป 

ถึงเฟอร์นิเจอร์และวิถีชีวิตต่างๆยังสะท้อนถึงวิถีชีวิตของคนตะวันออก 

เป็นอันมาก ดังเช่นห้องรับแขกที่อยู่ถัดจากมุขเทียบรถยนต์พระที่นั่ง 

ห้องดังกล่าวตกแต่งภายในด้วยชุดรับแขกแบบจีนซึ่งได้รับ 

พระราชทานจากพระพุทธเจ้าหลวง สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ 

ไทยจีนที่มีมาอย่างยาวนาน ต่อจากห้องรับแขกคือห้องเสวยซึ่งโดย 

มากใช้รับการเสด็จพระราชดำาเนินของพระเจ้าแผ่นดินหลายต่อ 

หลายพระองค์ รวมไปถึงพระราชอาคันตุกะจากทั่วทุกสารทิศ 

รวมไปถึงการฝึกสอนมารยาทบนโต๊ะอาหารให้แก่เหล่านักเรียนไทย

ในล้นเกล้ารัชกาลที่ 1 พระบรมอัฐิล้นเกล้ารัชกาลที่ 2 พระบรมอัฐิ 

และผ้าซับรอยพระบาทของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเจ้าหลวง 

พระอัฐิของสมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำารงราชานุภาพ รวมไปถึงพระ 

โอรสและพระธิดาสืบสกุลที่ล้วนทำาคุณงามความดีแก่แผ่นดิน สิ่ง 

เหล่านี้จึงทำาให้วังวรดิศไม่ได้เป็นเพียงที่ประทับของเจ้านายพระองค์ 

หนึ่งเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังกลายเป็นพิพิธภัณธ์ที่สถิตหลักฐานอันเป็น 

รูปธรรมของคุณงามความดีที่บรรพบุรุษไทยได้กระทำาเพื่อแผ่นดิน 

และเป็นหนึ่งในสถานที่ประวัติศาสตร์ที่ยังคงกลิ่นอายของความเป็น 

กันเองของเจ้าของวังเมื่อร้อยปีก่อนได้อย่างไม่เสื่อมคลายและได้รับ

Varadis Palace was built on Larn 

Luang Road, Phranakorn district in 

1911. It was designed by German 

architect Karl Siegfried Döhring who 

was behind many famous buildings 

in Thailand. This includes the Bank of 

Thailand Museum, formerly known as 

the Bang Khun Prom Palace of Prince 

Paribatra Sukhumbhand. Varadis 

Palace is made of brick designed in 

an Art Nouveau style. One can see this 

in the plaster flower motifs along the 

exterior framework, the high sloping 

roofs with attic space, and asymmetrical 

architectural layouts popular during the 

reign of King Rama V. 

With the Prince’s interest in history, 

especially that of Southeast Asia, it should 

be noted that although the palace was 

designed in a western style popular of 

the era, the interiors and decorations 

including furniture and everyday objects 

reflected the lives of those living in 

the east. A good example of this is the 

living room, located next to the covered 

car entry. The room’s interior is filled 

with Chinese furniture, which reflects 

the long relationship that Thailand had 

with China. After the living room is the 

dining room, which has seen banquets 

and feasts from royal visitors throughout 

Thailand, and from many parts of the 

world. Perhaps more interestingly, this 

space was used to teach European table 

manners to Thai students who were 

heading off to study abroad, preventing 

them from any embarrassing incidents. 

At the heart of Varadis Palace, as 

written in the compositions of Mom Chao 

Phanphitsamai Ditsakun is the private 

Buddhist chapel which contains royal 

relics of the King and his family members. 

This includes the bones and teeth of 

King Rama I, bones of King Rama II, the 

bones and royal walking cloth of King 

Rama V, the bones of Prince Damrong 

Rajanubhab and his sons and daughters 

with the same surname, and of whom 

had served the country of Thailand. This 

makes Varadis Palace not only a private 

home to a Prince, but a museum to royal 

ancestors and the virtuous people of 

Thailand. It is a breathaking place with 

a friendly aura, and despite being over a 

century old, it lives up to its name as a 

historical world building.
