80 YEARS OF FOGELBO & 90 YEARS OF MIDSUMMER!
A YEAR OF MOMENTOUS ANNIVERSARIES
Nestled in the trees along Oleson Road is an unassuming cabin called Fogelbo. In Swedish,
fogelbo means “bird nest,” derived from the Fogelquist family name, which means “bird on a
branch.” A Swedish couple, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Olson, had the log structure built between 1938-
1940 by Henry Steiner, one of the chief carpenters on Timberline Lodge. The concept of "the
log house" was brought to America by the first Swedish colonists who settled in New Sweden
(present day Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) in 1638. This building knowledge was
disseminated throughout the original colonies and eventually the entire United States.
The next owners of the home, Charles and Jessie Fogelquist, who had roots in the
town of Mora, in Dalarna, Sweden, did extensive work on the estate and, in 1989,
Fogelbo was designated as a historical site by Washington County. Their son, Ross,
was a German teacher and foreign student adviser in the Evergreen School District
in Vancouver, Washington. Carl the XVI, the King of Sweden, knighted Ross in 1985
with the title of the Knight of the Royal Order of the Polar Star, first class, due to Ross’s
achievements on behalf of Sweden and Scandinavia. Ross served as Acting Swedish
Consul for Oregon in 1993, and again between 1999 and 2001. He has received
many other awards, both locally and nationally, and Ross had his 80 TH birthday this
year! In fact, we recently celebrated Ross's and Fogelbo's 80 TH birthdays; the featured
background image features the very Swedish color story from some of these festivities!
At Fogelbo, which houses one of the largest private collections of Scandinavian
artifacts and antiques in the United States, Ross has hosted many guests from all parts
of the world. In 2015, Ross deeded Fogelbo to Nordic Northwest. The estate grounds are
currently being reshaped into a park for use by the Nordic community and beyond! •
"It was and still is about
the younger generations
participating in their
heritage as I have done and
knowing it will continue on."
Our beloved Portland Scandinavian
Midsummer Festival returns for its 90 TH year in
2018, and is being recognized as an official
Oregon Heritage Tradition! This esteemed title
is only awarded to events with at least 50 years
of continuous operation that are associated
with Oregon, appeal to a broad spectrum of
the public, and add to the livability and identity
of the state. A big thank you to Dave Alford, our
2017 Scandinavian of the Year, and the League
of Swedish Societies, our Midsummer partner, for
getting this annual festival the recognition it deserves
after bringing laughter and joy to Oregonians for 90
straight years. Based on lore gathered from local
Nordic community members, Portland Midsummer
celebrations date as far back as the late 19th
century, with some even held at Oaks Park around
1880. Back then the park was a forested area and
guests had to cross the river by barge! In 1927, eight
Swedish groups joined forces and formed the League
of Swedish Societies, which hosted the first official
Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival.
Many of the traditions remain the same; we still raise
a birch covered Midsummer Pole or "Majstång", make
flower crowns, and involve crafters, performers, and
organizations from the Portland Nordic community.
Every year we add new vendors, have new crafts for
kids, provide games for both kids and adults and offer
classic Nordic flavors in the beer garden and food
court. We welcome the entire community to enjoy a
fun-filled day with us and celebrate Midsummer the
Nordic way, and the Oregon way.
Come join us on June 9, 2018 at Oaks Park for our 90 th
annual Portland Scandinavian Midsummer Festival
from 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Raising of the Midsummer
Pole is at 2:00 PM on the main lawn.
The Portland Scandinavian Midsummer Festival
is made possible through the support of the
Scan|Design Foundation and Nielsen’s Jewelers.
Additional support comes from Allart, Inc., ePrint
Services, Johan Vineyards, Laurelhurst Florist and
pFriem Family Brewers. Photos by Alyssa Johnson. •

Some 2018 vendors include: Nordic Siblings Handmade, Oh Snap! PDX, Repurposed Wood Studio, Secret
Dragon Collectibles & Tokerud Designs. Food and drinks will be served al fresco by Harmoni Lodge, League
of Swedish Societies, Finlandia Foundation’s Helsinki Café, Fringe Mead, Johan Vineyards, Scandinavian
Café, Sweet Kardamom Bakery & Viking Soul Food! Plus, meet three of our featured newcomers this year:
Carina's Bakery by Carina Comer
Carina Comer wants you to join her in creating pastries that tell a
sensational story and that bridge communities of all shapes, sizes
and abilities. Due to a brain tumor she developed at an early age,
she lost nearly half her vision before taking her first steps. Driven
toward her goals, she found a love of baking early on, inspired by
the memories of her Swedish grandfather. Her recipes come from
the homeland, from inside cozy cottages in the frozen northlands
of Sweden. She seeks to incorporate the simple ingredients once
available to her Viking ancestors.
Gnome Werks by Danyal Boyd
Gnome Werks Toys grew from Danyal Boyd's love of making toys
for her own children. As her children grew, the handmade toys
became more elaborate and it has really grown from there.
She loves dreaming up and designing new characters. Her toy
designs are inspired by children's literature and fairy tales because
fantastic stories and fairy tales get everyone's imagination moving.
Open-ended toys made with natural and all non-toxic materials
inspire imaginative play in young children, and their parents and
grandparents.
Fika Craft by Jessica Koenig
Fika Craft is the creation of Oregon-based, Scandinavian-born
Jessica Koenig, who grew up in the countryside doing a lot of just
that: Fika and Crafts. Fika is the Swedish word for a sit-down coffeelemonade-snack-break
(think cinnamon rolls and gingerbread
cookies). After traveling and living in lots of places and countries,
her creations and designs have been a way of finding a home
away from home. Designs are inspired by the windswept Nordic
landscape and by Swedish folk art. Her patterns are made to
complement the simplicity of Scandinavian homes.

1 ST ANNUAL SYTTENDE MAI CELEBRATION—A SUCCESS!
Nordic Northwest partnered with Broder Söder to put on a Norwegian
influenced picnic style dinner in honor of the 17 TH of May, Norwegian
Indepedence Day! Before a musical performance on piano, we served pølse
med lompe, shrimp salad, cheeseboards and aquavit. It was a geat evening
and we hope to host more collaborative dinner and event pairings soon!
Did you know? June is full of Nordic independence! Denmark marks theirs on
June 5 TH , Sweden on June 6 TH , and Iceland on the 17 TH ! In Denmark, although
they do have Constitution Day off from work, you are more likely to find a
political speech than a parade, and most Danes simply enjoy the weather
on lawns drinking beer. The Swedes are often on holiday during their "Flag
Day" but acknowledge their history with food and friends. Iceland’s national
day was selected because it's the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a champion
to the nationalist cause now commemorated through parades, theater and
dancing. Keep an eye on our schedule to make the most out of summer with
Broder and Nordic Northwest, including news on a summer dinner series! •
NORDIC HERITAGE NIGHT
with THE PORTLAND THORNS!
LEARN MORE ABOUT SOCCER IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES!
The 2018 FIFA World Cup begins in Russia on June 14 th , with Denmark, Iceland and Sweden competing from
the Nordic region! NNW is celebrating by teaming up with our local women’s team, the Thorns, for a Nordic
Heritage Night at Providence Park. Our members will get discounted tickets to the game on Friday, July 6 TH
against the Utah Royals.
Iceland jumped above the five other “Nordics” in men’s world soccer rankings at 28 TH place in 2014. In 2016,
Iceland ranked 22 ND , and for this year’s World Cup, it is the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA final
tournament! Many attribute the island’s success to the re-focus on coaching, specifically by Swede Lars
Lagerbäck since 2011. Higher coaching certifications are required at all levels and players said Lagerbäck
brought more professionalism to the team. After five years of coaching, the last two with co-manager
and native Icelander Heimir Hallgrímsson, Lagerbäck stepped down leaving Hallgrímsson as the solo head
coach for the 2016-18 team.
Norway is on the opposite end of this spectrum in terms of its team leadership. Norway’s global soccer
image has been struggling in the face of major losses in the last two decades. It is not to say that there is a
lack of talent on the Norwegian men’s team. Two Norwegian players who graduated to the senior team,
Ole Selnæs and Mats Møller Dæhli, along with other younger players on the team, are not old enough to
remember the last time Norway qualified for the World Cup in 1998, the nation’s soccer hey-day.
As the tournament begins, Iceland is definitely the team to watch. Norway has had to watch from the
sidelines as its two biggest rivals, Denmark and Sweden, consistently qualify for championships. We will be
cheering them all on! Background image, 2018 Iceland Men's Team, from Getty Images, courtesy of FIFA. •
