Message from
the Founding Father
Rod Confesor
Founding Father
It was the second semester of 1970. I was in a class
for an elective subject when a seatmate, staring at an
ink drawing of the frat seal displayed on the front cover
of my notebook, curiously inquired, “Is that a new frat?”
I answered in the affirmative. My seatmate smiled and
said, “Good luck. I hope your frat survives.” He seemed
to have read my mind. It was a wish that stayed with me
for years in anticipation of the many challenges that will
come to confront us.
Today, that same seatmate would have been
astonished to note that the Tau Gamma Phi indeed
survived and now stands as the biggest nationally
established fraternity in the country. With strong
presence in countless schools and colleges stretching
across the archipelago, we have proven to all that
not only are we united and strong, we are also, by all
counts, resilient and determined to grow and survive.
And yet, we are all aware that survival alone is
not enough. Along with growth, the fraternity, to
be meaningful, must continue to evolve into an
organization that is relevant both to its members and to
the society that it serves. It must, above all else, faithfully
pursue its mission to contribute to the development
of our youth, particularly in terms of value formation
and character building. From a larger perspective,
Tau Gamma Phi should be a responsible participant in
efforts to improve the lives of others.
This organizational evolution is nowhere more
pronounced than in its mother unit—the University of
the Philippines. For most Triskelions nationwide, UP
remains to be the center of gravity. It sets the pace
in almost all levels of development as a fraternal
viii
organization. From fostering a collegial
style of leadership to installing a sustainable
system of governance to enhancing
members’ skills and creating strong links to its
alumni corps, UP Tau Gamma Phi demonstrates
its desire to remain true to its vision of excellence.
For the first 30 years or so, the focus of the
fraternity has been limited to its campus residents.
Many resident-led projects had been conducted, but
much of our activities revolved around the university.
As the number of the alumni started to grow, however,
a sense of maturity began to set in and a welcome
transformation occurred.
The establishment of the alumni association
17 years ago contributed largely to the aforementioned
transformation. It ushered in a new era of renewed
involvement in fraternity affairs among the alumni, many
of whom have met great success in their own careers
and professional life. Ready and willing to contribute
their talents, time, and resources, they introduced the
fraternity to a new phase in its existence—this time
outside the campus.
Formerly the UP Tau Gamma Phi Alumni, Inc. (UP
TGPAI), the UP Triskelions Alumni, Inc. (UPTA) gave
birth to the successful unification of all Triskelion units
within the UP System. Guided by the dictum “One
UP, One Triskelion,” it brought together Diliman, Los
Baños, Baguio, Clark (San Fernando), and Tacloban
units into one solid aggrupation. For the benefit of its
residents, UPTA institutionalized the “GT Summit,” a ye
arly leadership training conference for its key leaders
and officers in the campus. It likewise established
If you want
to go fast,
go alone.
If you want
to go far,
go together.
(African Proverb)
“Triskelion
Cares,” a program which aims to extend both financial
and in-kind assistance to selected institutions and
individuals in fulfillment of our objective to be of service
to others.
Commendable as they are, most of these initiatives
need to be complemented by other measures to
further prepare the fraternity for the years to come.
Concerns on areas such as selection and recruitment,
image-building, and resident welfare are but a few
that need to be seriously addressed. Efforts are now
underway to tackle such issues with the help of the
alumni association and key leaders who have graciously
offered their assistance.
As we celebrate our Golden Year, we should
look forward to a new era of Triskelion brotherhood,
one that is more progressive in outlook and ready to
adapt to new ways of doing things. Hopefully, with all
of us joining hands, we can provide our new crop of
Triskelions a more positive, life-changing experience.
Happy 50 th Anniversary to all the brothers and
sisters!
The Tau Gamma Phi is the
Triskelions’ Grand Fraternity, my
fraternity, the supreme fraternity.
Primum nil nocere. First of all, do
not harm, let alone in defense
of self. For whatever reason
man has come into being, for
whatever reason he exists, kin to
all living creatures around him,
man is brother unto man.
Degustibus non desputandum
est. Of like and dislikes, there
should be no disputing. Live and
let live.
Preserve yourself—brawn, brain,
and blood.
Brothers I shall love and respect,
their counsel I shall heed.
The University of the Philippines
is my alma mater, to cherish
and to honor, by its rules be
governed and guided.
The Grand Triskelion is
righteous,
just, and strong. He shall be
obeyed.
A Triskelion is a brother unto
his fellow Triskelion.
