UPSI NEWS h t t p : / / w w w . u p s i . e d u . m y / Design Thinking: Renewal in the STEM Creative Teaching for Special Education UPSI, 3rd May - My Teachers TryScience (MYTTS) have already entered the third phase this year focusing on the STEM subjects for Special Education. This MYTTS project was sponsored by the IBM Malaysia Pte. Ltd. In collaboration with the Perak State Department of Education and headed by the Associate Professor Dr.Balamuralithara Balakrishnan and academicians from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). According to Associate Professor Dr. Balamuralithara, the main objective of the MYTTS Project is to inculcate creative and innovative thinking among Special Education teachers through the Design Based Learning approach using Design Thinking concept. “Design thinking is a mechanism that boosts creativity, innovative, empathy, critical thinking, cooperation, and problem solving in which the teachers whom look at Design Thinking concept can instill creativity and innovation in their teaching process more effectively, “. This is a pivotal mechanism among teachers of Special Education that faces new challenges daily in educating special children, especially in STEM based education,” says. He added, around 40 teachers of special education specifically from the 11 districts of Perak was chosen to follow the Design Based Learning Workshop that exposes them towards the concept of Design Thinking. “This workshop was held in Ipoh, Perak on March 13th to 15th 2018, which was facilitated by IBM (Malaysia) Pt.Ltd. and the MYTTS team from UPSI. The effectiveness of the Design Based Learning Workshop was highlighted by the teachers through their STEM learning innovation products at the Special Education Seminar organized by the Perak State Education Department and UPSI on the 24th to 26th of April 2018.” The outcome of the innovation product exhibition from the Design Based Learning Workshop attracted the attention of many participants and visitors during the seminar. People from various seminar participants have been inspired by the innovative learning product exhibited, “. “The success of the MYTTS Phase 3 project can be the foundation for the Special Education teachers to be more creative and innovative in the teaching process of STEM in the classroom,” he said.
