Kuala Lumpur, 13th May - <strong>UPSI</strong> once again<br />

recorded an unprecedented success during the<br />

International Design, Innovation and Technology<br />

Exhibition (ITEX) <strong>2018</strong> which took place at the<br />

Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) with<br />

10 gold, three silver and one bronze medals<br />

respectively.<br />

Three gold medals were obtained through the results of researchers’<br />

innovation from the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts entitled<br />

E-Critical Reflection Manual for Coaches and Supervisors and<br />

SPECTROMORPHOLOGICAL NOTATION: Notating Musical Timbre of Non-<br />

Standardized Musical Instrument led by Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Hassan<br />

Abdullah, and the product entitled Malaysian Music Score Arrangements<br />

for a Western Classical Ensemble which was headed by Dr. Karen Anne<br />

Lonsdale.<br />

The next gold contribution were obtained through two projects from<br />

the National Children’s Development Research Center (NCDRC) namely<br />

the NATIONAL CHILD DATA CENTER (NCDC) MOBILE APPS headed by Prof.<br />

Dr. Sopia Md Yassin and NATIONAL CHILD DATA CENTER (NCDC) - CHILD<br />

DEVELOPMENT, ALERT & HEALTH MODULES by Dr. Suzani Mohamad<br />

Samuri.<br />

Researchers from the Faculty of Human Development took two gold<br />

and two silver medals through the Zero to Hero - 5 Integrated Learning<br />

Skills Module product led by Mr. Ab. Aziz Mohd Yatim, and Prodigy Career<br />

Exploration Kits (Pro-Cares) product which was headed by Dr. Noraini<br />

Ismail, while the silver medal were garnered through LITERACY LEARNING<br />

product using AUGMENTED REALITY which was developed by Prof. Madya<br />

Dr. Noor Aini Ahmad and Tools for Teaching and Learning products in the<br />

21st Century Primary Mathematics Classroom were spearheaded by Dr. Siti<br />

Rahaimah Ali.<br />

The Faculty of Computer Science and Creative Industry also helped<br />

<strong>UPSI</strong> garner two gold medals through products entitled i-Pocket: Mobility<br />

E-Learning led by Prof. Madya Dr. Muhammad Modi Lakulu, and A Novel<br />

Smart Multi-Sustainable System for Virtualized the Best Applicants by<br />

Optimizing Their Abilities Level Using University Recorded Data and<br />

SWEBOk.V3 by Dr. Aos Alaa Zaidan while JAWI STAMP FOR KID (Jaws4kid)<br />

product headed by Dr. Ridzuan Hussin garnered a silver medal.<br />

The tenth gold medal was contributed by the Faculty of Science and<br />

Mathematics researcher led by Dr. Tho Siew Wei through the product<br />

entitled Free Fall Investigation through Innovative Use of Mobile Devices<br />

for Physics Education.<br />

Meanwhile the bronze medals were obtained through the E - LKPS<br />

product: Progress Report on Graduate Studies on the Online Initiative from<br />

Human Resource Division led by Mrs. Azzah Abdul Latiff.<br />

<strong>UPSI</strong> was also awarded the bronze medal for the International Booth<br />

Design category of the brainchild of the Intellectual Property and<br />

Commercialization Unit and the Research and Management Innovation<br />

Centre (RMIC) led by Deputy Director, Professor. Madya Dr. Hanisom<br />

Abdullah.<br />

A total of 8 booths have been contested and the first-time participations<br />

were proven successful when <strong>UPSI</strong> is ranked third.<br />

ITEX <strong>2018</strong> has come up with the theme ‘Invigorate Your Creativity’<br />

to give aspiring inventors the platform to share ideas of solutions or<br />

innovations that can improve the quality of<br />

life. It highlights more than 1,000 inventions<br />

spanning 20 countries including China, Germany,<br />

Turkey and Korea.<br />

Some of the main attractions are the<br />

organizing of the World Young Inventors<br />

Exhibition (WYIE), the Asia Young Inventors<br />

Exhibition (AYIE), the Malaysian Young Inventors<br />

Exhibition (MYIE), the PITCH4FUND session, the<br />

beginner entrepreneurship seminar and the<br />

venture capital talks to entrepreneurs (VC2E).<br />

At ITEX 2017, <strong>UPSI</strong> managed to earn 5 gold<br />

and 9 silver medals from 14 participating entries.<br />

Design Thinking: Renewal in the STEM<br />

Creative Teaching for Special Education<br />

<strong>UPSI</strong>, 3rd May - My Teachers TryScience (MYTTS)<br />

have already entered the third phase this year<br />

focusing on the STEM subjects for Special<br />

Education.<br />

This MYTTS project was sponsored by the IBM<br />

Malaysia Pte. Ltd. In collaboration with the Perak<br />

State Department of Education and headed<br />

by the Associate Professor Dr.Balamuralithara<br />

Balakrishnan and academicians from Universiti<br />

Pendidikan Sultan Idris (<strong>UPSI</strong>).<br />

According to Associate Professor Dr.<br />

Balamuralithara, the main objective of the<br />

MYTTS Project is to inculcate creative and<br />

innovative thinking among Special Education<br />

teachers through the Design Based Learning<br />

approach using Design Thinking concept.<br />

“Design thinking is a mechanism that boosts<br />

creativity, innovative, empathy, critical thinking,<br />

cooperation, and problem solving in which the<br />

teachers whom look at Design Thinking concept<br />

can instill creativity and innovation in their<br />

teaching process more effectively, “.<br />

This is a pivotal mechanism among teachers<br />

of Special Education that faces new challenges<br />

daily in educating special children, especially in<br />

STEM based education,” says.<br />

He added, around 40 teachers of special<br />

education specifically from the 11 districts of<br />

Perak was chosen to follow the Design Based<br />

Learning Workshop that exposes them towards<br />

the concept of Design Thinking.<br />

“This workshop was held in Ipoh, Perak on<br />

March 13th to 15th <strong>2018</strong>, which was facilitated<br />

by IBM (Malaysia) Pt.Ltd. and the MYTTS team<br />

from <strong>UPSI</strong>. The effectiveness of the Design Based<br />

Learning Workshop was highlighted by the<br />

teachers through their STEM learning innovation<br />

products at the Special Education Seminar<br />

organized by the Perak State<br />

Education Department and<br />

<strong>UPSI</strong> on the 24th to 26th of<br />

April <strong>2018</strong>.”<br />

Phase 3 project can be the<br />

foundation for the Special<br />

Education teachers to be<br />

more creative and innovative<br />

in the teaching process of<br />

STEM in the classroom,” he<br />

said.
