Critical Path
by: Richard Buckminster Fuller
Richard Buckminster
“Bucky” Fuller July 12,
1895 – July 1, 1983)was an
American architect, systems
theorist, author, designer,
and inventor.
Fuller published more than
30 books, coining or popularizing
terms such as
“Spaceship Earth”, ephemeralization,
and synergetic. He
also developed numerous inventions,
mainly architectural
designs, and popularized
the widely known geodesic
dome. Carbon molecules
known as fullerenes were
later named by scientists for
their structural and mathematical resemblance to geodesic spheres.
Fuller was the second World President of Mensa from 1974 to 1983.
Critical Path is a book written by US author and inventor R. Buckminster
Fuller with the assistance of Kiyoshi Kuromiya. First published
in 1981, it is alongside Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth
one of Fuller’s best-known works. Vast in its scope, it describes Fuller’s
own vision of the development of human civilization, economic
history, and his highly original economic ideology based, amongst
other things, on his detailed description of why scarcity of resources
need no longer be a decisive factor in global politics.
June in Perquimans
by Colleen Brown
J
une is off to a beautiful, if somewhat rainy, start here
in Perquimans County. Summer is coming and
is offering all sorts of opportunities and incentives for
celebration. Students are graduating, sweethearts are
planning weddings, and that grill is beginning to beckon
you out onto the deck! Not to mention summer children
having birthdays, father’s day coming up quickly, and
the onslaught of family reunions, church picnics, civic
organizations planning festivities that comes with the
summer months. So, you probably have one or more (or
several!) gatherings that you are planning over the next
few months. Let me offer a suggestion.
Perquimans County has a number of public parks and
outdoor spaces you can reserve for your celebrations.
Have you ever driven past the Missing Mill Park in
Hertford when there’s a birthday party under the picnic
shelter? Did you know that you can reserve the park for
a party simply by calling the Town of Hertford? It’s as
easy as checking out a library book, maybe easier. The
reservation form can be found online, but a quick phone
call will get it emailed to you as well. The park has a
covered picnic shelter with rest rooms, picnic tables with
freestanding grills, a playground for children, a boardwalk
through the trees down on the river, a fishing shelter and
additional dock.
The lovely little Rotary Park in Hertford on White Street
is also available for reservation, as is the Municipal Park
right beside the Town Dock. The Rotary Park has a tiny
green space, but a long boardwalk out onto the river, a
good sized fi shing shelter, and a dock with a step-down
Breathe Easier & Protect Your Family by Conquering Pesky Mold Problems
As I’ve met with parents, city council members, residents,
and attorneys throughout the state, most are concerned
about the health risks of mold and understand the need to
take control and address it.
Popular opinion might tell you to get rid of your affected
property, pack up and leave town, or panic unnecessarily.
But the good news is leveraging common sense chemistry
and 21st century remediation methods can restore a building
to normal use and acceptable air quality while avoiding high
costs.
It may surprise you how bleach is not effective in eliminating
mold like you might think. According to the EPA, it masks and
may even invigorate growth.
landing perfect for launching canoes and kayaks. The
Hertford Municipal Park is a shady green space right
behind the Municipal building, beside the boat ramp. It
fl ows down to the river where a boardwalk with a picnic
space gives onto the town dock. A perfect place for a
party of friends to sit in the shade, enjoying the breeze off
the river and each other’s company.
Across the river in Winfall, the Winfall Landing Park is
a wonderful place for a party! It has a lovely river front
board walk, a covered picnic shelter, public restrooms,
playground area for children and huge open green space
perfect for impromptu athletics. The river scenery from
the park is just breathtaking and the breeze off the water
makes the park a cool place even on most hot days.
There’s also a step-down kayak landing so you can have
easy access to the river.
For those more interested in indoor spaces, the Winfall
Town Hall meeting room can be reserved for private parties.
It’s large enough for good sized gatherings and has
tables and chairs available.
And, that’s really just the beginning. The County Rec
Center is surrounded by sports fi elds and playgrounds.
There are county owned camping platforms on the river.
There are community centers, boat launches and sports
fi elds all across the county that can offer celebration
locations either for the reserving, or for a small fee.
Explore Perquimans County and explore opportunities to
celebrate.
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
Warren Green can be reached
at warreng9241@hotmail.com
Last month I mentioned the phrase
“If you don’t grow it, you don’t
know it” . Let’s drill down on that
concept. Our region has some of
the highest health disparities in the
country. The disparities are cancer,
diabetes, cardiac and stroke. All
diet related. The history of the area
informs that the state of North Carolina
itself, was created in 1789, for its
fertile soil and long growing season.
So, how does that reconcile? The air
is clean, the water is generally clean
according to the annual water report.
So, lets look at the soil part of our
environment.
I’ve been advocating for an accredited
organic soil testing lab operating
out of Elizabeth City State University,
our local Non-Land-Grant College
of Agriculture (NLGCA). An organic
soil testing facility should be an
important economic and epidemiological
asset to the region. I strongly
appreciate the out pouring of community
support for our pursuit of cleaner
more wholesome food.
Economically, annual fee schedules
for organic testing are high. Some as
high as $5,000 annually just for testing.
The USDA uses third party testing
enterprises who set there own
fees which the USDA subsidizes. A
testing enterprise based out of Clemson
University is the nearest tester
in the region, but no longer services
North Carolina. The College of the
Albemarle (COA) is expanding it’s
curriculum to include Specialty crops,
and organic farming. Considering
our superior transportation logistics,
including a major seaport, rail, and
access to 60,000,000+ customers
within a days drive. Using modern
farming methods such as spin farming
(small acreage), high tunnels and
green houses, the Albemarle can be
a major player in the organic produce
sector.
In reading ECSU Chancellor Thomas
Conway’s exit interview, I’m very
pleased to learn of the possible collaborative
efforts of our three higher
education institutions (Elizabeth City
State University, College of the Albemarle,
and the Mid-Atlantic Christian
University). I pray that agriculture
enterprises and clean food will be
part of their agenda. Feeding the
poor is part of being a christian, and
our region is one of the poorest in
the state. Hopefully, these initiatives
will result in more economical and
healthier food choices, as we join the
global food chain as the “ Organic
Capital of the World”.
Finally, my clergy friends and family,
have convinced me that my advocacy
is a calling and I will accept that. I
will be dedicating the rest of my life to
advancing wholesome clean food to
all of our citizenry particularly those
on the lower economic scale. Join
the clean food movement.
Marvel’s Ultimate Villains

Dr. J. Stanley McQuade was
famous for saying, “A little bit of
law is a dangerous thing”. Nowhere
is this more true than in the context
of carrying fi rearms across state
lines. This is particularly applicable
to those of use who live near the
state line, and travel frequently to
Virginia to work or shop. Many times,
people assume that the laws of the
other state are the same as the laws
of their home state, and we all know
what “assume” makes out of u and
me. Failing to know and comply with
the foreign state’s laws can result in
civil liability, or even serious criminal
charges.
Concealed carry permit holders are
already familiar with the concept of
“reciprocity”, whereby one state recognizes
a permit issued by another
state. The fi rst thing a permit holder
should do when considering travelling
to another state is to verify that
reciprocity exists between the states.
However, that is just the beginning of
the process. While in the other state,
you must also comply with all of their
particular fi rearms laws, which may
or may not make sense to you. As
an example, North Carolina changed
our law fairly recently to allow permitted
conceal carry in an establishment
that serves alcohol, provided that the
permittee is not consuming alcohol.
Carry into such an establishment in a
state that does not permit concealed
carry on that premises at all, and you
are asking for trouble. Some states
have laws that ban possession of a
weapon at all on certain premises
unless you have specifi c permission
from the person in control of the
premises.
Those who prefer to carry their
weapons openly can run into similar
trouble. In NC, open carry is generally
allowed, except in prohibited
places like courthouses, schools,
etc. But cross into South Carolina
or Georgia with a pistol on your hip
and you may get cited for open carry
without a permit, because they do indeed
require a permit to carry openly.
Other states require that open carry
be in a belt holster only. Others ban
open carry altogether.
Some differences in the law affect
both open and concealed carry. For
instance, some states require that
any fi rearm brought into that state be
registered with the police within a given
time. Others require a separate
permit to merely possess a weapon
at all. Some states prohibit carry on
a highway rest stop, or a public park.
Some have “Stand Your Ground” or
“Castle Doctrine” laws that expand
the circumstances when and if you
can actually use the gun, and some
do not. Illinois requires a state-issued
Firearm Owner Identifi cation
Card to even purchase ammunition.
Some municipalities ban the sale or
possession of hollow-point bullets.
Special care must be taken when
travelling through highly-regulated
states like Maryland, where guns
must be unloaded and locked in a
separate container in the trunk. And
don’t even think about taking a pistol
into Washington, DC or New York
City at all!
Carrying/transporting long arms
deserves mention as well. Everyone
should be aware by now of the
multitude of states and municipalities
which ban or restrict “assault rifl es” or
large capacity magazines. But some
states require that they be unloaded
and carried locked in the trunk. As
discussed in a previous article, the
Federal Firearms Owners Protection
Act is supposed to protect people
transporting fi rearms from one state
to another while merely “passing
through” a state where the weapon
would be regulated or prohibited (if
the weapon is transported in compliance
with the Act’s provisions), but it
is no guarantee against prosecution
by an anti-gun zealot local prosecutor.
The traps for the unwary are not limited
to just firearms. I used to attend
a school for 2-3 days every year in
Illinois, where I drove 100 miles from
the airport to the school in unfamiliar
territory after dark. I knew better
than to try to carry a pistol there, so
I bought an electric stun gun. Then I
learned that Illinois also forbids carrying
stun guns!
The lesson here is simple. When
you cross that state line, you might
as well be entering a foreign country.
The ONLY rights that you take
with you are the ones set out in the
United States Constitution and the
FOPA. Ignorance of their laws is not
an excuse, and they don’t care how
you did it in North Carolina. We live
in the “Information Age”, when you
can get a basic understanding of the
foreign state’s laws just by visiting
a website or two. Educate yourself
before you travel. Some might consider
it a hassle, but it’s easier (and
cheaper) than paying a lawyer.
BANK ON YOURSELF/ BE YOUR OWN BANK
We are all human, unless we are born
with a “silver spoon in our mouth”..
If then, those people do not need to go out
and borrow money because they do not have
any; they borrow other peoples’ money and
save their own. When us mere mortals need
to borrow money in order buy a home, a car,
refi nance our bills or for whatever reason we
deem necessary, where do we go??? To
a bank or some form of lending place.. Did
you ever wonder where the banks get the
money to “lend” to us?? In a nutshell:: when
we deposit money into our savings account ,
the bank pays us a mere pittance interest for
trusting the bank to keep our money safe..
They do not sit on that money, they go
back and lend it to folks like us and charge
us a very high interest rate!! This interaction
between our deposit and them lending is
called “ARBITRAGE”.. That is how banks
get big and grow and can help out people
and our communities.....would you like to be
your “OWN BANK”, where you could borrow
money from yourself, pay yourself back
interest and grow your own nestegg?? There
is one way to do this and you control everything!!!There
is a savings vehicle that does
this.. It has a fund that is GUARANTEED
TO GROW EVERY YEAR, another fund that
pays a dividend every year which adds to the
savings amount each year.. When the value
of your fund is large enough in your mind (say
you want to buy a car for CASH, you just go
into the account, draw out the amount you
need and buy that car, or whatever you wanted..BUT
HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE.. you
set up your own repayment schedule each
month along with interest payments to repay
the loan and to help the fund keep growing
until you need it again!! No worries about your
credit score or past repos or debt problems,
you might not be rich in other money matters,
but this one can make you so, if you have the
due diligence to stick with the plan..
And lets say you are saving for years to buy
that special house or boat or whatever..AND
YOU DIE BEFORE YO CAN REACH YOUR
GOAL!! The plan will give your family probably
thousands of dollars to comfort the family
left behind...ALL OFF THIS IS “TAX FREE”..
saving the money, getting it out , and the pay
out to the family ( there are some situations
where a little bit of this might have tax to pay..
but rarely)..This miracle plan is PERMANENT
LIFE INSURANCE--WHOLE LIFE THAT
PAYS DIVIDENDS!! Not Universal Life, not
Variable Life products tied to stock market or
S&P 500 or other indexes.. This type of plan,
based around the amount of money you an
afford to buy LIFE INSURANCE, determines
the growth value of the plan inside.
This is not a get rich quick scheme, it takes
years to build up values that make it attractive
to use as your own bank.. Now, I am
not saying there are not other ways to save
money, but you can risk losing some or all of
it.. This idea is not for everyone, but look into
it with me and I can direct you really how it
works.. The younger you are when you start,
the more you can have later in life to “BANK
ON YOURSELF” .. If you wish to contact me
and chat, call me at 252 335 5983 or 252
202 5983, or my e-mail is WWW.INSDR@
Dear Dr. Crime
Dr. Crime is a pseudonym for a social scientist holding
a Ph.D. degree in sociology and in criminology. He
has worked in all major parts of the criminal justice
system. Drop him a note at the website www.keepkidshome.net
If you or your child is in trouble, he
may be able to help, give him a call (2523390000) or
E-mail at
reedadams@yahoo.com
Dear Dr. Crime: At our book club one of my friends told
me a student took Ketamine to school. She was upset.
What is Ketamine? Should I tell the principal? Southern
Bell
Dear Bell: Ketamine, an anesthetic, ( K, Special K, Ket,
and Kit Kat ) is known as a date-rape drug. Studies of
ketamine’s effects revealed dreams, “trips”, and a sense
of well-being after using it. It is legal when used medically,
but illegal when used recreationally. Outside of
medical use, simple possession of ketamine is a crime.
As for reporting it, yes do so. As for use of drugs outside
of medical settings so as to get a buzz, or other improper
outcomes, NO. Avoid them. And remember the now
well-known phrase “If you see something, say something”.
Dear Dr. Crime: It seems that every time I cut on the
TV another school shooting is reported. Your reporting
on kids killing kids in school doesn’t tell me enough
about how much there is and if I should take my kids out
of public school. I see the local newspaper just ran an
editorial saying “Eventually a school shooting will come to
N.C.” Tell us how likely it is my kids will be in a shooting.
Typical Parents.
Dear Typical Mom and Dad: I suspect your emotions
are more common than any of us know. Parents have
been given many frightening reports. The amount of
research and statistics are massive because of the extremely
widespread concern for our children. I refer you
to a free download “Indicators of School Crime and Safety,
2016” from the National Center for Education Statistics
and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Go to https://nces.
ed.gov/pubs2017/2017064.pdf and let me what you think.
Dear Dr. Crime: I am a politician. I need to know the
best government policy to reduce school shootings and
make our schools safe again. No-name fellow.
Dear No-Name: I wish more politicians would ask for advice
from non-governmental researchers. I refer you fi rst
to the current issue of the American Journal of Criminal
Justice (Vol. 43, #1, Spring 2018) devoted entirely to
“School Safety: Increasing Understanding/Decreasing
Misunderstanding in the Realm of School Safety”. Moreover,
I encourage the government to create a statewide
body devoted only to a review of the scientifi c literature
on school safety. That group should provide to all county
Boards of Education and county managers periodic
reviews of what works and what does not work, and why.
The group should be independent of government so as
to be free of infl uence. The issue is more complex than it
fi rst appears.
Dear Dr. Crime: You are so full of bunk. Research heck!
I know how to keep kids in line, about anything. You
smack them, hard and often and right away. That will
stop the bad behavior! They will get the idea of what is
right and grow up well. Typical Dad
Dear Typical Dad: Many people agree with you. I agree
that some behaviors can be handled as you say, particularly
the part about the time lapse between the bad
behavior and your response. Punishment or reward has
to be quick to be linked with the child’s behavior. I am
far more in favor of rewarding good behavior than simply
punishing bad behavior. The May, 2018 issue of WebMD
(see your physician’s office for a copy) has a review of
what the research shows the impact of spanking children
has on them. The report shows that the majority of parents
agree with you to a large degree. BUT, the research
shows that spanking causes problems later in life. Citing
good research, the report indicated that corporal punishment
was associated with violence with a date, attempted
suicide, heavy drinking, drug use, depression, aggression,
and family fi ghts. And a review of 75 research
studies found no evidence spanking improved children’s
behavior, but taught them how not to get caught. If you
have a child go to WebMD.com and see the “alternatives
to spanking”.
Dear Dr. Crime: Is there a change happening with drug
use by kids? Teacher.
Dear Teacher: The Centers for Disease Control reports
that overall drug use by kids is going down and overdose
deaths are up. The drugs are more powerful than in the
past. Fentanyl is out there, and is 50 to 100 times more
powerful than heroin.
Dear Dr. Crime: The world seems to be less trustworthy
than in the past. What can I do to make my cell phone
safe? Old Guy.
Dear Old Guy: Yes, the phones today are not like
Grandma’s phone. Consumer Reports suggests you (1)
use a lock code, (2) encrypt your phone, and (3) set up a
phone fi nding application. For help with these, talk with
your phone service provider.
Dear Dr. Crime: How do I make sure I don’t get in trouble
when I pay my taxes? Avoiding prison
Dear Good Citizen: With limited information the best I
can say is be honest and use the IRS Witholding Calculator.
You can get a copy at IRS.gov/individuals/irs-withholding-calculator.
At the IRS site you will fi nd a lot of
good information.
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
T
he Algonquian language has always appeared to be complex in both written
and spoken form to the average English speaking person. Yet prior to colonization,
this language was the primary language spoken by Natives along the
Eastern shores of North America and by many tribes who lived as far west as
Ohio. The Chowanoke Indians spoke Algonquian and while the dialects varied,
there was enough similarity that tribes could easily communicate with one another.
The Chowanoke dialect was somewhat comparable to the Algonquian dialect
of the New England states and certain portions of Canada. However there was
some variation found among the Algonquian dialects spoken in the mid-Western
areas.
Tribes whose primary language was derived from another linguistic family,
could often communicate with its tribal neighbors. For example, the Tuscarora
who were neighbors and lived in proximity to the Chowanoke, spoke an Iroquoian
language. However, because they also interacted with the Chowanoke to
a large degree, they could communicate with them in their Algonquian language
as well.
Colonizers found many Indigenous words too long and diffi cult to pronounce
and as a result forced tribes to stop communicating in their language. Many
recorded instances among tribes residing in the west attest to the fact that Indian
students were forbidden to speak their language in Indian boarding schools and
were punished if caught doing so. Even in our own community, names were
shortened for those Natives who chose not to take English names. One example
is the shortening of an Indian name to a family name known today as Tann.
In 2007, the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous
People which states in Article 13 that all Indigenous peoples have the right
to perpetuate their languages and histories to future generations and that States
shall ensure that this right is protected. Since its adoption, a renaissance of Algonquian
and other Native language curriculums have been seen in tribal communities
and schools throughout the US. Even prior to the adoption of UNDRIP,
the Children’s House in Mashpee, Massachusetts began teaching its pre-K and
kindergarten Wampanoag students its Algonquian language. However since the
Declaration, a public school has incorporated the Algonquian language into its
language curriculum where Native high school students have the opportunity
and are once again learning to speak their Native Algonquian language fl uently.
Duvonya, a Chowanoke Indian
descendant, is President
of Roanoke-Chowan Native
American Association, a
non-profi t organization whose
mission is to help American
Indians in Northeastern NC
and Southeastern VA. She
currently sits on the council
of the Chowanoke Tribe.
In partnership with another
Chowanoke descendant,
she is currently developing
Chowanoke Reservation for
tribal descendants to gather
and hold cultural events.
The 2018 Biggs Classis Was a Classic
Sometimes you just need a little luck and maybe
a little cooperation from Mother Nature.
The 2018 Biggs Classic golf tournament played
on May 24-26 in Hertford on Albemarle Plantation’s
Sound Golf Links got a big break from
Mother Nature when she provided three glorious
days of sunshine after a deluge on the eve of the
tournament.
The event featured 120 young golf professionals
from all over the United States and some from
as far away as South Africa and Great Britain.
All were competing for the top money prize of
$12,000 and an exemption to play in Web.com’s
Rex Hospital Open the following week in Raleigh.
The golf, like the weather, was spectacular.
You don’t know how well these young pros play
until you’ve seen them in action. The fi rst day saw
Chris O’Neill of Glen Allen, Virginia, take the lead
with a 65. But he was passed on the second day
by Drew Weaver of High Point, North Carolina,
who tied the course record with a 64 to go along
with a 67 the fi rst day. Another golfer had an even
better second day: Kelby Burton, former golf star
at Kennesaw State, set a new course record with
a 63.
The best action was yet to come. On the final
day, with Weaver leading the fi eld by a single
by Claude Milot
stroke, David Gazzolo burst from the pack to win
it all, beating Weaver by one stroke by shooting a
total of 14 under par for the tournament. But Gazzolo
did not just win, he did it in the most spectacular
fashion. The 31-year old who played for
Virginia Tech and won the 2007 Amateur Championship,
came to the 18th hole tied with Weaver
for the lead. He decided not to play it safe. Instead
of laying up on the short 343-yard Par 4 hole, he
took advantage of a following wind and aimed
his drive straight at the hole. The ball reached
the green and came to rest only 18 inches from
the hole for an incredible eagle. Weaver, playing
in the group behind Gazzolo, had a birdie of his
own on the last hole, but it wasn’t enough. What
a fi nish!
Now in its fi fth year staging a professional golf
tournament, the Biggs Classic has become the
standard for developmental tour golf. And it’s not
just the golf and the superb golf course, it’s the
enthusiastic support of the competition’s many
sponsors and the hospitality of Albemarle Plantation’s
residents that make this event so special.
Gary Haugh, president of GPro Golf, Albemarle
Plantation’s partner this year in staging the Biggs
Classic, is looking forward to this relationship for
years to come. Why not? It’s a classic event in
every sense of the word.
Raymond’s Creek
T
he Raymon’s Creek subdivision, situated in Camden,
NC, near the village of Shiloh, is less than 45 minutes
south of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, and 45
minutes west of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Its location
provides convenient access to Virginia’s three largest
cities - Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake. To the
east, Currituck County’s H2OBX waterpark, the Dare
County beaches, and numerous wildlife refuges are easily
accessible for day trips.
The development abuts the expansive Raymon’s Creek
estuary and the Pasquotank River. The Raymon’s Creek
Homeowner’s Association community park and pier,
overlooks Albemarle Sound, and is suitable for wading,
swimming, and boating. Woods and waters surrounding
the neighborhood provide abundant opportunities for
fi shing, birdwatching, hiking, kayaking, or simply basking
in solitude.
Two of the remaining lots abut the Raymon’s Creek estuary,
and all lots have deeded access to the Pasquotank
River via the homeowners’ association common area. All
lots connect to the county’s water system, and impact
fees have been paid for most sites. Dominion Power provides
underground electric service, and all lots have been
pre-tested for septic systems.
For individuals desiring more than a lot, an adjacent
eight-acres tract is available, offering views of the
Raymon’s Creek estuary and the Pasquotank River. An
outbuilding sits on the cleared portion of the tract, and a
newly constructed creekside pier provides safe harbor for
boats.
For more information, visit www.raymonscreek.com, or
call George Jackson, Developer/Broker.
Phase One of the subdivision, comprised of 12 lots, was
created in the early 1990s. All of the original lots have
been sold, and, ten families now reside in the neighborhood.
In 2015, the adjacent 13 acres were divided into
fi ve wooded/partially-cleared lots ranging in size from
1.5 acres to 5 acres. Prices begin at $44,000. One lot in
Phase Two has been sold, and site work is underway for
a new custom home, being offered by Kyro Builders, LLC.
Only 4 lots available
Blue Crabs
By Jimmy Fleming mrfl emz@embarqmail.com
I
f one commodity has been exploited to the fullest in Tyrrell
County and eastern North Carolina over the past 30 years it’s
the amazing Blue Crab. From back in the early days where they
were caught on trot lines or hand lines to today where they are
caught using large baited pots (traps). The blue crab is common in
most eastern NC waters but the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds account
for most of the commercial harvest which exceeds 20 million
pounds per year. Male crabs are called a Jimmy and female crabs
are called sooks or she-crabs depending on their age.. A female
crab with an egg mass attached to her body is called a sponge crab
and she can spawn twice in her life releasing up to two million eggs
each time.
There are many watermen in our area who make their living catching
blue crabs starting in early spring and into late fall depending
on market price and number of available crabs. In order to grow,
blue crabs must shed their shell up to 25 times during their lives.
During this time the old hard shell is replaced with a new very soft
shell that will gradually harden. These softshell crabs are a delicacy
that are harvested and eagerly consumed by by locals and visitors
alike. The blue crab is not just for commercial harvest. Many locals
and visitors enjoy setting a crab trap or dangling a line baited with
a chicken wing to catch a mess of crabs. Most of these end up in a
pot of boiling water seasoned with a good bit of Old Bay Seasoning.
Any way you look at it, commercial or sport, the blue crab is
a welcome part of eastern North Carolina’s marine environment.
This summer, enjoy some fresh softshells or a delicious crab boil …
cause they’re goooooooood!!!!
Pet Partners
By Jane Elfring
Is there a difference between therapy, assistance, emotional support
and service dogs? Yes.
Pet Partners members are frequently asked if our dogs are service
dogs or if they can provide emotional support. Our dogs are not service,
hearing or guide dogs. Those dogs have been specially trained
to work with specifi c individuals.
Our dogs have been trained to provide animal-assisted interventions
to different groups, such as veterans or others suffering from PTSD,
special needs individuals or residents of nursing homes, to name a
few.
Therapy animals provide benefi ts to many individuals, unlike assistance
or emotional support animals who work with a specifi c individual.
Because of this, it is okay to approach our dogs in public places.
They have been evaluated to be tolerant of a wide variety of environments,
such as hospitals and nursing homes.
Our dogs are not allowed special privileges such as living in “no pet”
housing settings, do not have access to store and restaurants and
cannot fl y in the cabin of airplanes.
Our handlers complete an on-line Pet Partners handler course, have
their animals screened by a veterinarian, and are evaluated by a Pet
Partners licenses team evaluator. Following successful competition of
these steps, teams are approved to begin visiting facilities, groups and
individuals in Perquimans, Pasquotank and Camden Counties.
The next meeting of the group will be June 20, 5-6:30 pm, at the
Pasquotank County Library, 100 E. Colonial Ave.
Dear Mom and Dad,
Ruth just left my kitchen after more
than an hour of crying. You remember
my good friend Ruth, don’t
you? Her children play soccer with
Sabrina.
Yesterday Ruth’s mom died unexpectedly.
Do you remember several
months ago when I told you that
Ruth’s dad had gone into a nursing
home? It was such an emotional
decision for Ruth’s mom to put her
husband of more than 40 years into
a nursing home. There was no way
she could continue to care for him
anymore. His condition had just
deteriorated so quickly. Last week
he didn’t even recognize Ruth or her
mom.
Ruth is really devastated now. Her
parents never believed in preparing
for their old age or death. Ruth’s
mom never expected to die fi rst.
Now, because dad is unable to
make his own decisions, the court
is requiring a guardianship. After
talking with a lawyer, Ruth learned
that the guardianship could have
been avoided -if only her parents
had a durable power of attorney and
health care power of attorney. Now,
the guardianship will cost thousands
of dollars. In addition, the court must
be consulted for everything! Ruth’s
mom never believed in going to see
a lawyer to plan for her husband’s
long-term care. Ruth’s mom never
had a will either. Ruth recently
learned that, under North Carolina
law, her dad gets everything and he
loses all his Medicaid benefi ts. Everything
that Ruth’s mom had hoped
would go to her children will now go
to the nursing home to pay for Ruth’s
dad’s care. To make matters worse,
the court would not even allow Ruth
to be her Dad’s guardian. Apparently,
her estranged brother objected to
her appointment as guardian. A lawyer
is now looking after Ruth’s dad.
It’s a lawyer who had never even
heard his name before the competency
hearing. All of this could have
been avoided if Ruth’s parents had
adopted an estate plan that avoided
or planned for these emergency
situations.
Mom and Dad, I know you value
your privacy, but none of us has
a crystal ball. When God calls us
home-it’s time. I see the agony that
Ruth is going through. She’s trying
to understand why her parents would
not trust her in their later years and
would not discuss their fi nances with
her. Please know that I am not trying
to pry. My interest in your getting
things in order may appear to have
a selfi sh aspect to it, but I just want
to be sure that you are taken care
of and things are done as you want
them to be done. I listen to Ruth and
see the tears she has shed because
of the waste that is taking place. Because
her parents failed to plan for
the unexpected, I am truly moved to
ask you to make sure that you have
a durable power of attorney, health
care power of attorney, and a will or
trust. That way, if you were to get
sick or die, the confusion and cost
would not compound my grief.
You are very precious to Sabrina
and me. We look forward to sharing
many years of fun and joy, as well
as your wisdom. But, as your oldest
child, I am truly moved to bring this
subject to the forefront.
Professionalism
What does Professionalism
mean to me? Professionalism
refers to the way in which a person
conducts business and how they interact
with coworkers, subordinates,
and the public. Professionalism
is more than possessing a college
degree or a long list of accomplishments.
Professionalism incorporates
many different attributes that
make a person a true professional.
A professional should be confi dent,
polite, and a good communicator.
Professionalism means remaining
calm even in a tense work environment.
A professional must be
reliable and dependable. People
will be counting on you to get the job
done promptly and with a satisfactory
outcome. Professionals should
be competent in their fi eld and willing
to educate those around them.
If I am elected Sheriff, I will ensure I
am surrounded by men and women
who are competent and highly
trained to perform their duties.
By Jim Bray
Professionalism means being
organized and accountable for your
actions and the actions of subordinates.
A professional must accept
responsibility and take their job seriously.
Lastly, what I believe to be
the most important characteristic of
professionalism is ethics. A professional
should do what is right even
when no one is watching. Integrity
and ethics form the foundation of
a person and this defi nes a real
professional. The level of leadership
a person is capable of is often
refl ected in their professionalism. As
the Sheriff of Perquimans County,
I want to be that strong leader that
exemplifi es professionalism while
being a positive role model for the
community. I would appreciate your
support in my bid to be the Perquimans
County Sheriff in 2018.
Orthodox Christianity
We know the scene and we love it. It’s a blue sky
day over an indigo horizon. Long ribbons of
snow white waves break on the strand with the echo
of a thousand trees in the wind.
It is the morning on the OBX shore after a night
storm that washed the humidity away, and now everything
is bright and clear.
by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
“By these words the Lord is teaching those who pray
to begin with the very mystery of God ... The words
of the prayer really point to the Father, the Father’s
name, and the Kingdom, to teach us ... to honor, to
call upon and to adore the One Trinity. For the name
of God the Father, essentially, is the only-begotten
Son. And the Kingdom of God the Father, essentially,
is the Holy Spirit.”
At that moment, we come face to face with a symbol
of infi nity.
But even that oceanic view could not contain the
substance of this prayer:
Even greater, even more unthinkable, is the revelation
that God is Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All
creation is a gift, showing that God is Trinity, and that
the Trinity is love ...
“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy
Name, Thy Kingdom come ...”
Most people know this prayer well, but its depth of
meaning is hidden by its simplicity. It sounds like a
“family” prayer, and indeed it really is, as it starts with
“Our Father.” But this little phrase, when addressed to
God, is actually startling. The very idea of calling God
“Father” could not have been invented out of a fantasy.
The sheer new-ness of “Our Father” had to have
come from outside the human mind. It had to come as
a gift, a revelation.
behaviors to get healthier requires time, effort and
sacrifi ce. At Nutrition Pair, we don’t believe in the
fad diet approach. We work with you to help you
discover your path to wellness. It’s not a onetime
thing. Most clients we work with are seen at
least on a monthly basis. We have found that this
approach works best when clients are trying to
change behaviors. There is no failure. If you can
learn something new from each experience, you
have not failed. This is true even if you have not
reached your goals. Like plants, it takes time to
grow new habits.
Setting up clear expectations is an important step
in the change process. Remember, we are here
to support you, cheer you on, and to hold you accountable
as you fi nd your way. We provide education,
if necessary and with your approval. You are
the most important member of the team. Without
your input, it will be diffi cult to help you grow.
The safest course is to do
nothing against one’s conscience.
With this secret, we
can enjoy life and have no
fear from death.
New Edenton Business Fosters Creativity, Civic Engagement, and ‘Fandom’ Downtown
by Laura Bush Jenkins
As you leave the Edenton waterfront, you
may have seen a plainly printed “Seamstress
Sewing” sign outside a renovated storefront
by Waterman’s Grill. It seemed practical
for me to drop by as a busy mom and meet
someone who could improve my professional
wardrobe and offer suggestions for what to
wear on date night.
Quickly, I realized Victorians Boutique For
Him and Her (431 S. Broad St.) was about way
more than clothing. With lively spiritual music,
the aroma of fresh cut roses, and a friendly
welcome, this place is an absolute “must”
shopping experience. As the name implies, it
is the only boutique in Edenton catering to both
women and men.
“We celebrate people who dare to succeed
and keep moving forward,” says founder
Jacqueline Hardy Lassiter, an Edenton native,
about the mission of her business. “Our civic
duty is to pay homage to those before us by
blazing trails for those behind us.”
Lassiter was living in Boston with her three
children when an unexpected prompting on
the way to a family funeral led her to return
home and embrace a new challenge. A strong
woman of faith, Jacqueline recognized moving
to Edenton fulfi lled a greater purpose.
She is passionate about connecting with the
community and encouraging others to partake
in the economic revitalization of the town.
Jacqueline looks forward to seeing young
entrepreneurs rise up to give Edenton greater
success.
Come meet Jacqueline, the vessel of this
family legacy, and pick up that unique, inspirational
gift for Father’s Day. Victorians will host
a Father’s Day Sip on June 16th from 2-4pm
showcasing NFL pieces, as well as spiffy-casual
and board room attire for men.
New Exhibits Coming to MOA in June
Albemarle Craftsman Fair participants
Wanda Lassiter, Curator, Museum of the Albemarle
wanda.lassiter@ncdcr.gov
T
he Museum of the Albemarle will open two new exhibits
during the month of June. The fi rst, titled River
Bridge: Sunken Secrets, opens June 16, 2018. The
exhibit will feature over 275 artifacts recovered from an
underwater archaeology site on the Pasquotank River
called River Bridge. A wide range of goods were imported
to the wharf site at River Bridge and were stored
at warehouses and inspection stations once located at
or near the bridge. These goods included everything
from pearlware and creamware ceramics to glass vials,
grave markers, axes, engraved wine decanters, faunal
and botanical artifacts, shoes, personal effects, and
shingles.
Of the over 10,000 artifacts recovered from the site,
more than half (5,514) were ceramics that included
hand-painted pearlware with Chinese-like motifs,
earthenware butter pots and dairy pans, stoneware
crocks, creamware bowls and plates, Staffordshire
slipware, gray salt-glazed Westerwald stoneware,
brightly decorated teacups, and hundreds of tobacco
pipe fragments. The earliest artifacts include fragments
of 17th- to 18th-century tin-glazed earthenware, a circa
1720 undecorated white salt-glazed cup, and a circa
1760 creamware dinner plate.
On June 25, 2018 Celebrating 60 Years of the
Albemarle Craftsman’s Fair will open. The Albemarle
Craftsman’s Fair, founded in 1959, holds its 60th annual
fair this Fall. Craftsmen from regional counties, across
the state, and as far as Florida exhibit, demonstrate,
and promote their best of handcrafts during the fairs.
First organized by Home Demonstration Agents from
Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank,
and Perquimans counties and the Elizabeth City Chamber
of Commerce, the Fair’s purpose was not only to
boost the regional economy by providing artisans with
an outlet for selling their crafts, but also to promote and
teach traditional crafts.
Ag Grant Sought for Region
by: C.L. Cooke
T
he Golden Leaf Foundation has begun the
cycle where applicants in the Northeast Prosperity
Zone can apply for grants funded from the
Master Settlement Agreement. Also known as the
Tobacco Settlement Agreement, funds can be used
for programs that encourage purchase of NC products
and prove sustainability of family farms.
C.L. Cooke of Elizabeth City has begun the
process to coordinate interest in seeking a $1.5
M grant to meet the required criteria for interested
farmers in the 17 county Northeast Prosperity
Zone. Camden County Manager, Ken Bowman,
gave Cooke the go ahead to seek support from
other county managers willing to become part of
the process. This step was necessary as all participating
county managers would sign off on the
Community Based Grant Initiative proposal upon
completion.
The process underway is to identify interested
farmers, agriculture consultants, cooperative extension,
(FFA) Future Farmers of America at the local
High Schools, and those with expertise in the most
modern practices for sustainable farming methods.
Identifying the best crops based on soil type
and climate will be a contributing factor along with
current and projected market demand. Of great interest
is organic farming products and methodology
as well as the hot house for seedling germination.
If possible, at least one farmer from each of the 17
counties in the Northeast Prosperity might participate.
Thought not a requirement, we hope to
include all who are interested and willing. A list of
the 17 counties are as follows: Beaufort, Bertie,
Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax,
Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank,
Perquimans, Pitt, Washington, and Tyrrell.
Any and all interested parties are asked to contact
Mr. Cooke at larryc609@gmail.com.
We are all full of weakness and
errors; let us mutually pardon each
other our follies - it is the fi rst law of
nature.
Jake’s Outdoor Adventures
If you are here on the Outer Banks for vacation then I want to share
with you several different fi shing opportunities that you can do as
a family and make some lasting memories of your trip to the Outer
Banks. One way is a trip to one of six fi shing piers located from Kill
Devil Hills to Avon. Check with the piers because many of them will
rent rods and reels and supply you with all you will need to fi sh. The
pier is a great way to fi sh if you are worried about seasickness, short
attention spans, and it is your best value. Fishing on a pier requires no
license and most piers give you an option for a day or weekly pass, so
you can come and go several times during the day or week.
If you are here on June 20, 2018, and have children, the annual Fritz
Boyden Youth Fishing Tournament will be from 800AM to 1200PM and
is open to children 4-16 and is free. The participating piers are Avalon,
Nags Head, Jennette’s and OBX Piers. Registration starts at 730AM
and there will be an awards ceremony after the event. Check the Facebook
page “Nags Head Youth Fishing Tournament” for updates.
by Jake Worthington
price is reasonable and rods and reels are furnished or you can bring
your own. Also you can charter a boat for backcountry or sound fi shing,
which is a good idea for children or if you are uneasy to try the ocean
because of seasickness. Near Shore fi shing is also a good way to
experience ocean fi shing and still be in sight of land.
Both Sound and Near Shore Fishing Trips book for 4 hours, half
days and whole days so you can chose which one you would like to
try. There are also independent charters like Rock On and Overdrawn
Charters that will meet you at the NC Wildlife Boat Ramp on the Nags
Head Causeway. All inshore charters supply everything you will need
to fish and they have a blanket fi shing license so you will not need a
license. So get the kids out of the pool or away from the TV and video
games. Get your family on the water and make some memories while
you are here on the Outer Banks!
Surf fishing is another option but you will need rods, reels and tackle.
Some rental cottages come equipped with these items. If not, you will
have to go to a local tackle shop. If you go, please do yourself a favor
and visit a local tackle shop in lieu of a big box store because their
prices are competitive and they can give you fi shing tips and advice.
If you fish on the surf and you are 16 years or older, you will need to
purchase a Coastal Recreational Fishing License.
Adventures go to
https://www.facebook.com/
jakesoutdooradventuresnc
If you would like take the family out on a fi shing trip on a boat, there
are also several options that you can consider. At the Oregon Inlet
Fishing Center, Pirates Cove, and Oden’s Dock, you will fi nd a Headboat
where you can fi sh on a boat with a large group of people. The
Although considered by some to be endangered, the written
Cherokee language dates back to the early 1800’s. It was
developed over a period of 12 years by Cherokee native,
Sequoyan, who began the process in 1809. By the 1900’s the
language was widely accepted and during World War I, it was
one of the languages pioneered by Code Talkers to help win
the war.
On Wednesdays throughout the summer, museum visitors
will have an opportunity to learn about Cherokee culture,
language, and history from descendant and scholar, Dr. Tina
Bradley. individuals will also have a chance to see their
names written in the Cherokee language syllabary. The translated
name makes a great keepsake regardless of heritage,
and the opportunity to hear the language and try to speak it is
fun for everyone in the family—from pre-schools to seniors!
Dr. Bradley, who teaches at College of the Albemarle, has
done extensive work with the original Cherokee language
including the online Cherokee--English Transcription and
Translation program, creating the K-12 language curriculum
for the federal reservation school, and crafting the embedded
language technique opening the way for digital transfer of
documents and graphic design to anyone.
The museum program is FREE with admission and will be
“I found the show fascinating,” said judge and Pocosin Arts
resident artist Gabrielle Graber. “The artists are painting
their surroundings and it is really admirable to see how they
view their home. I selected “Self Portrait” as the Best In
Show piece because the artist used value correctly in the oil
painting to make it look alive and that to me is excellence.”
Dare County Arts Council partnered with the Outer Banks
Forum to feature music in this year’s Mollie Fearing Memorial
Art Show. Gloria Coker’s “Man with Horn” will grace the
cover of the 2018-19 Forum Playbill. The Playbill is distributed
to 500 individuals and businesses throughout the Outer
Banks.
“We are excited about this collaboration which showcases
incredible area talent,” said Eddie Cooke, President of the
Outer Banks Forum for the Lively Arts. “The judges agreed
that the selected piece
for the Forum’s playbill
cover is a magnifi cent
impressionist painting that
exemplifi es the musical
theme of the Forum.
Congratulations to all the
participants!”
Rosie Makes Smashing Good Salads
When the temperatures outside start rising, I
cool off with light, refreshing, cool salads, and
nothing cools like a cucumber. A cool cucumber is
the perfect foil for hot weather and hot food.
According to the latest food magazines and food
emails I get, the newest food trend is smashed
cucumbers. Smashing cucumbers is not a new
technique. It’s been standard in many parts of Asia
for quite some time, but now, it’s just making its way
to the States. For some reason, we’re slow that way.
As for the cucumber to use here, I prefer the English
cucumbers. Those are the long skinny ones
wrapped in plastic. Generally, English cukes are
sweeter and milder than regular cukes. They don’t
have a layer of wax on them and, also, they have
fewer and smaller seeds and thinner skins, the
seeds adding to the bitterness of common cukes.
And, I have found they tend to last longer than the
regular cucumbers.
It's not just another wave,
By Rosie Hawthorne
it's an experience.
Now, about that smashing. The smashing technique
is decidedly Chinese. It cracks the skin, helps
release the seeds, and splits the fl esh. All of this
augments the cucumber’s ability to absorb fl avors,
enhancing any dressing you might apply, unlike
a sliced cucumber, with its smooth, impenetrable
surfaces, which would shrug off the dressing. With
a smashed cucumber, you have all those crooks and
nannies wide open, just waiting to accept whatever
dressing you use and form a relationship with it.
Now, let’s go smash some cucumbers! First, cut
your cucumber into 3-inch lengths, and then take
a rolling pin to ‘em. Smash away to break open
the cucumbers, then pull them apart into irregular
chunks. Place cucumber chunks in a strainer, lightly
season with salt and sugar (just a sprinkling of
each), and let sit for about an hour.
Drain cucumbers and discard liquid.
Smashed Cucumber Salad
1 English cucumber, smashed, lightly salted and sugared, and drained
3/4 cup peanuts, toasted
1 serrano chili, minced
some shredded carrot
For the dressing:
juice of 1 lime
juice and pulp of 1-inch
cube of ginger*
2 garlic cloves, pressed
1 TB brown sugar
1 TB rice vinegar
2 TB Tamari sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1/4 cup neutral olive oil (I use Bertolli extra light for a neutral oil. It doesn’t
compete with the other fl avors going on.)
Mix fi rst seven ingredients until sugar dissolves. Whisk in olive oil. Season
with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste.
Combine cucumber pieces, noodles, serrano chili, and peanuts.
Pour dressing over and toss to coat.
*Ginger Note: Whenever I buy ginger, I cut it into 1-inch cubes and freeze
it. When I need ginger, I simply nuke a cube for about 25 seconds, put
it in a garlic press, and I have ginger juice. One cannot easily get ginger
juice from a fresh piece of ginger.
Elizabeth City Downtown Inc. Summer Happenings
By: Deborah Malenfant
Tuesday evenings in the spring and summer come
alive on the downtown Elizabeth City waterfront with
Elizabeth City Downtown Inc.’s Summer Movies & Music
Series at Mariners’ Wharf Park. Starting in June you can
enjoy a classic movie at the park on Tuesday evenings
beginning at 8:30 pm. The movies have traditionally
been the black and white “classics” from the 1930’s
through the 1960’s, but look for a few more recent
classics and movies from different genres this year. The
flicks will still be shown on the big screen, drive-in movie
style. The official film season is every Tuesday in June
and July, starting June 5th and continuing through July
24th, with a rain date of July 31st. Mark your calendars
for the Tuesday Flicks! The first film of the season will
be the 1963 Comedy/Drama Lilies of the Field starring
Sidney Poitier being screened on June 5th. Keep an
Art in the Albemarle Area
I
by Talmage Dunn
want to thank everyone for all the thoughts and prayers
during my illness. I am still recovering a bit from surgery
but everything is on the mend. I still have a surgery to go
through in September, so keep me in your thoughts.
As the school is nearly over for this year and summer is
about to begin. I hope you have made preparations to try
something new and different this summer season. By now
three art shows have taken place in our area. The 27th annual
miniature art show, The Ghost Fleet Gallery “Self-Portrait”
art show, and the Mollie Fearing Memorial Art show.
I hope you had the chance to go and view the awesome
artwork that was on display!
Currently Articulture: SPLASH is ready to start in Elizabeth
City. Come out and view the artists at work, walk through
the downtown, and try your hand at some artwork. The
dates for this year is June 1st through Jun 10th. I hope you
had the chance to go and enjoy celebrating artists across
North Carolina, including returning artist Jane Filer. Interactive
events will be held for the ten day period at various
locations on Main Street. Metal work, painting (plein air,
watercolor, acrylics, etc.), and crafting of all kinds will be
happening. There will be continued updates around the city
and musical guest announcements. This event is FREE
and OPEN to the PUBLIC!!! Tell your friends.
I have been writing about letting yourself go and enjoy
viewing art and painting for pleasure. Please allow me to
explain another value to painting... help in the healing of
your spirit. Not that painting will cure you of any diseases
but the therapeutic value that comes from painting. I have
been working on trying to use these “healing” properties of
art to help me through my period of convalescence. Painting
can do this for you also. Let yourself go , put colors on
canvas, and paint, paint, paint. I have included the painting
I did during this time.
What are your plans now that summer is here ? What are
your children doing over these months away from school?
Camps? Sports? Vacations? Even when going to these
activities there is always some form of art going on, maybe
not painting, but art in some form. Allow me to make a
suggestion.... art camp! If you are fortunate enough to live
in the Elizabeth City area... Studio 511 Art and Soul has art
camps for children and classes for adults. In each of our
counties there are numerous opportunities to take classes
and enhance your own or your children’s artistic talents. I
urge you to avail yourself of these activities.
Your goal this month is to put some colors on canvas, on
paper, or on a rock! Its amazing what doing that will do for
your psyche!
It is that time of year for summer sales, craft fairs, and
yard sales. This is an opportunity for picking up materials
for your artwork without breaking your wallets. It is also a
great time to get get out of the house and look at some of
those areas that you have a desire to paint!
Don’t forget the First Friday Art Walk in Elizabeth City.
Also, check out the art classes offered in and around your
county.
One Mill Park located in southern Camden County
has a story to tell, and now is available to all who
choose to visit. On Tuesday, May 15th, Camden Parks
and Recreation Director, Tim White, thanked Alex and
Sandra Leary for their part in discovering, preserving
and sharing history with the public. Alex Leary was
swimming in the waters, a favorite spot of locals over 40
years ago and stubbed his toe on something. He dug
around it under water and a large round mill stone was
discovered. He rolled it to shore and solicited friends to
assist in lifting it into the bed of his truck. Alex has been
the keeper of many of history’s hidden treasures over
the years. As a history educator, his love of the past has
been refl ected in his collections, stories and sharing of
this knowledge to many civic groups, students and now
the public who visit the Park. Five windmills once stood
in the Shiloh area in the 1800’s. Used to grind corn into
cornmeal, the wind was a source of power for such
work. Unfortunately, wind was also the source of the
demise of these mills, at hurricane force.
White designed and installed an interpretive sign with
photos of the tall, graceful sentry overlooking the waters
near the sound. The Mill Stone is also featured in this
display, a round carved stone, traveling many miles from
the Caribbean to serve the residents of Camden County.
Local grain was milled into food for families. This
lovely park no longer has windmills, but features picnic
pavilions, playground, boardwalk, boat ramp, restrooms
and a spectacular view of the Pasquotank River and the
Albemarle Sound.
County Manager Ken Bowman and Camden Commissioners
Tom White and Garry Meiggs each shared
their appreciation for this historical addition to the
beautiful Park and thanked the Leary’s for their generous
donation. More of Camden County’s history can be
discovered at the Camden County Heritage Museum
and Historic Jail, open on Friday and Saturday, 10am to
4pm. Call 252-771-8333 for more information on Camden
Look Alike
When reading these articles highlighting native, local
wild foods, it may seem that I have been overzealous
in stressing the importance of absolute confi rmation
of plant identifi cation prior to consuming these gifts from
the ground. Failure to attain certain knowledge of plant
type can result in either a pleasant meal by chance, or
a decidedly undesirable outcome. If you are not familiar
with the story of the Greek philosopher Socrates, hemlock
tea was purportedly the drink of choice that removed
him from this earthly plane.
Both plants above are in the same Apiaceae botanical
family. They both grow in roughly the same environments
and they both can have hollow stems. The differences
between the poisonous hemlock plant and the edible
Queen Anne’s Lace, aka wild carrot, are slight but distinct.
The hemlock tends to be taller and more branching,
or “tree-like”, than the wild carrot. The poison hemlock
stem is hairless and demonstrates purple blotches along
by: Coy Domecq
the length of the stem. Queen Anne’s Lace has a hairy
stem and lacks the purple coloring. Although both plants
have white fl ower clusters, Queen Anne’s Lace tends to
have a reddish/purplish center, hence the story of Queen
Anne pricking her fi nger and (dis)coloring the lace. This
is not the case for hemlock as the fl ower cluster is uniformly
white. Additional signifi cant differences between
the plants exist that are beyond the scope of this article.
There are many cases of good vs bad lookalike choices
when collecting wild foods. The degree of certainty when
collecting these plants is of paramount importance. This
is not intended to be a fi eld guide to positively identify
these plants but to heighten awareness of the similarities
between edible and non-edible plants in general. Oh, by
the way, the poison hemlock leaf and stem photographs
presented above are on the left.
I
want to thank everyone for your many thoughts and
blessings during my recovery from surgery. Your kind
toughts and prayers were really appreciated. I am still in
the recovery process so please bear with me.
I also hope everyone has had the opportunity to get out
and do a little target practice. With all the rain we have
had of late getting outside to shoot has been a real challenge,
of course, that happens during hunting season
also. Sometimes “rainy” day practice has its advantages.
Know how the weather affects your archery equipment.
I would like to take this time and review what noted archer
Fred Bear had to to say reminding us about his “10
commandments of Deer hunting.” He wrote the following:
1. Don’t step on anything you can step over.
2. Don’t look for deer, look for movement, (and remember,,,,
its what the deer look for also!)
3. Always approach from downwind, in the cool of the
day, move uphill, in the heat of the day, move downhill.
4. The best camoufl age pattern is called, “Sit down and
be quiet!” Remember, your forefathers hunted deer in a
red plaid coat. Think about that for a second!
5. Take only the gear into the fi eld that allows you to
hunt longer, harder, and smarter.
6. A rainstorm isn’t a reason to quit the hunt.... its a
reason to stay!
7. Camoufl age your appearance, your sound, and your
scent!
8. Be sure of your shot. Nothing is more expensive than
regret!
9. Hunt where the deer actually are … not where you’d
imagine them to be.
10. Next year’s hunt begins the minute this season’s
hunt ends.
Northeast North Carolina Family History – Saving Historical Records
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
get posts from a few genealogical groups on my Facebook
feed and one from FamilySearch posted mid-May
I
caught my attention. After reading the entire article I felt
impressed to share some of the observations noted there.
Much of the information comes from the manager of The
FamilySearch Global Content Strategy team, David Ouimette.
The five top specifi c threats to the world’s historical records
were listed as follows:
1 - Poor Archival storage conditions (48%). Much of the
world does not have facilities to properly store their records
and they are exposed to weather conditions that deteriorate
and sometimes destroy them.
2 - Political Instability (43%) Government buildings are
targets for destruction in politically unstable countries during
times of unrest and revolt.
3 - Scheduled Destruction (21%) Admittedly this one seems
hard for me to swallow, but the article describes a couple of
specifi c countries where the census is routinely destroyed.
Ghana in Africa does that every 10 years to make way for
the new census, feeling all useful material has been extracted.
India has done the same thing but now digitizes what it
considers important, then destroys the census. As someone
who is eternally grateful for all the various censuses in North
America, especially the US census schedules after 1850
when ALL members of households were supposed to be
listed, my heart breaks for those in the future that have lost
this resource in their country.
I have written about this before, but some counties in
the US have destroyed vital records thinking them of little
importance. Many years ago in a northeast North Carolina
county, I asked to look at marriage licenses for a certain time
period and was told they had been destroyed. The clerk
seemed puzzled as to my distress as she added that the indexes
had been kept. Unfortunately what was lost was the
names of parents, where they lived and whether they were
alive or dead at the time of their child’s marriage. Critical
info when trying to sort out individuals with the same name
and close birth years. (Sigh...)
4 - Death of Oral Informant (10%) Much of Africa’s genealogy
is kept orally by a tribal elder. China also has a history
of oral genealogy, some dating back thousands of years. As
young people move away from villages to more urban situations,
these histories are often lost. Due to divorce and families
living long distance from their origins, I have found most
North Americans have lost touch with their backgrounds
and have few stories to pass on within their own families.
Defi nitely something we can make an effort to improve upon!
5 - Natural Disaster (4%). I admit to being somewhat surprised
at how low natural disasters ranked as I would have
considered that near the top. But those events still happen
today, even in our own homes as photos, letters, journals
and other critical family information molds or dry rots and
is thrown away, particularly after fl ooding or tornadoes.
Perhaps a family digitization project pulling in those teenage
phone skills...
The microfi lm preservation of records by FamilySearch began
with its predecessor, the Genealogical Society of Utah
in a letter written in May of 1938 by then secretary, Archibald
Bennett. He pleaded that “priceless original records” could
be reproduced by a new relatively inexpensive means called
microfi lm. Filming of original records began in the United
States in that same year, 1938. Unfortunately microfi lming
in England did not begin until after WWII, too late for many
destroyed collections.
I, as well as countless others, have spent untold hours
pouring over microfi lm and microfi che records looking for
some sign of ancestors. Today records are preserved by
330 cameras taking well over 100 million digital images
of records around the world. With the help of volunteers
indexing also from around the world, these images are able
to be quickly located by internet searchers, often in seconds
- quite a change from the hours we used to spend cranking
microfi lm readers not knowing if we would fi nd anything! I
hope as summer events and family reunions get underway
we will make a conscious effort to record and SAVE our
records.
Irene Hampton earned a certifi cate in Genealogy
from Brigham Young University and worked as
the Genealogical/Local history Researcher for the
Pasquotank-Camden Library for over 12 years. She
has also abstracted and published “Widow’s Years
Provisions, 1881-1899, Pasquotank County, North
Carolina”; “1840 Currituck, North Carolina Federal
Census” and “Record of Marriages, Book A (1851-
How Can You Meet Your Short-term Goals?
Why do you invest? If you’re like most people,
you’d probably say that, among other
things, you want to retire comfortably. Obviously,
that’s a worthy long-term goal, requiring longterm
investing. But as you journey through life,
you’ll also have short-term goals, such as buying
a second home, remodeling your kitchen or
taking a much needed vacation. Will you need to
invest differently for these goals than you would
for the long-term ones?
To answer that question, let’s first look at how
you might invest to achieve your longer-term
goals. For these goals, the key investment
ingredient is growth – quite simply, you want
your money to grow as much as possible over
time. Consequently, you will likely want a good
percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as
stocks and other stock-based investments, to
fund your 401(k), IRA or other accounts.
However, the flip side of growth is risk. Stocks
and stock-based investments will always fl uctuate
in value – which means you could lose some,
or even all, of your principal. Hopefully, though,
by putting time on your side – that is, by holding
your growth-oriented investments for decades –
you can overcome the inevitable short-term price
drops.
Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe
In short, when investing for long-term goals,
you’re seeking signifi cant growth and, in doing
so, you’ll have to accept some degree of
investment risk. But when you’re after short-term
goals, the formula is somewhat different: You
don’t need maximum growth potential as much
as you need to be reasonably confi dent that a
certain amount of money will be there for you at
a certain time.
You may want to work with a fi nancial professional
to select the appropriate investments for
your short-term goals. But, in general, you’ll need
these investments to provide you with the following
attributes:
• Protection of principal – As mentioned above,
when you own stocks, you have no assurance
that your principal will be preserved; there’s no
agency, no government offi ce, guaranteeing that
you won’t lose money. And even some of the
investments best suited for short-term goals
won’t come with full guarantees, either, but,
by and large, they do offer you a reasonable
amount of confi dence that your principal will
remain intact.
• Liquidity – Some short-term investments have
specifi c terms – i.e., two years, three years, five
years, etc. – meaning you do have an incentive
to hold these investments until they mature. Otherwise,
if you cash out early, you might pay some
price, such as loss of value or loss of the income
produced by these investments. Nonetheless,
these types of investments are usually not
diffi cult to sell, either before they mature or at
maturity, and this liquidity will be helpful to you
when you need the money to meet your shortterm
goal.
• Stability of issuer – Although most investments
suitable for short-term goals do provide a high
degree of preservation of principal, some of the
issuers of these investments are stronger and
more stable than others – and these strong and
stable issuers are the ones you should stick with.
Ultimately, most of your investment efforts will
probably go toward your longterm goals. But
your short-term goals are still important – and the
right investment strategy can help you work
toward them.
Fathers Day
by Pastor Dan Bergey
F
irst of all I would like thank all those at Albemarle Tradewinds, for
their good work and putting this paper out to the public. I thought
it would be good to take a few months and talk about relationships.
We have a great opportunity to do that with Mother’s day, and Father’s
day. This month we take time to thank our father(s) and tell them we
love them. It is hard for me sometimes though not to become cynical
on days like this. Not because of my relationship with my Father
who has now passed away, but with the lack of Spiritual and natural
Fathers. To be a father is a remarkable thing, but it means growing and
maturing. It means serving and selfl essness. It means enjoying when
children are fi lled with unconditional love, and are pointed in the right
direction through healthy and Spiritual life examples of the Father. I’m
in a dream world you say? I politely and lovingly disagree with you.
Proverbs 23:24 says this “The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
and he who begets a wise son will be glad in him.” This picture in
Scripture is one of beauty, because it describes the Father in the same
way as the Mother who cared for her body and health as she went
through pregnancy and birth.
Dad today I challenge you to seek and understand the value of your
role in the labor of raising a child. This value is not monetary, manly, or
macho. It is one of sacrifi ce, challenge and joy. Its true value does not
have earthly credits, but heavenly ones. If you are in need of strength
and courage to be a Father, we here at New Life are glad to pray for,
and encourage you to become the Father, God has created you to be.
Local, State, and Confederate Troops
By Dr. Dave
During the War of Northern Aggression 1861-1865 there were
a number of state and local troops as well as militia and confederate
government troops that generated from Eastern North
Carolina towns and counties such as: Washington, Perquimans,
Pasquotank, Currituck, Gates, Martin, and Chowan Counties etc.
even though the bulk of confederate men and equipment was
supplied by North Carolina. From 1861-1865 the total strength of
individuals in confederate service was 1,003,609 North Carolina
provided 125,000 soldiers and navy alone to the confederacy,
which was more than any other confederate state. The War of
Northern Aggression (or Lincoln’s War) brought on 94,000 confederate
deaths which 40,000 were of North Carolina descent.
There were also state and local troop’s mustered together along
with the junior and senior reserves alongside confederate government
troops. Of all these military personnel there are many direct
descendants living today in the same towns and countries and
some in the same houses. Many of these descendants are listed
in this article along with their famous kinfolk. Some of the most
registered regiments and units from these local areas are impart:
the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 27th, 32th, 56th,
59th, and 68th also Calvary units of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 12th, and
15th and also artillery units.
One of the most widely known units from this area were the
Camden Guerrillas who were mustered into North Carolina state
troops but were never turned over to confederate government
troops although they fought shoulder to shoulder in many of the
same battles but as North Carolina troops.
The 68th North Carolina troops as well as the 27th and 56th as
well as other units were organized from the Camden Guerrillas
who were organized for the protection of eastern North Carolina
and predominantly from the Camden County area among others
The Chowanoke Tribe annual Pow-Wow
authorized by an ordinance of the convention for North Carolina
troops 5-12-1862. The Captain was Willis B. Sanderlin and promoted
to major when the unit was transferred to the 68th North
Carolina troops. Major Sanderlin is the great-great uncle of now a
local resident of Currituck E.G. Swain.
Another group of state troops was the 27th North Carolina Infantry
Co. F. From Perquimans County known as the Perquimans
Beaure Gards one of the leaders was William A. Wilson from Perquimans
County who enlisted at Hertford, N.C. as a Corporal and
was promoted to sergeant and then elected to 2nd Lieutenant
and commanded the unit through most of the battles of Virginia
and North Carolina until the surrender of troops in 1865. Second
Lieutenant Wilson is a direct descendant of a number of people
still residing in Perquimans County. Lieutenant Wilson died in
Norfolk, V.A. in 1891 but his burial place is unknown.
