Babylon, <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> gold, was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

universal empires; and when <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> Babylon<br />

passed away, Medo-Persia occupied her place. For<br />

a while Babylon had been true to her trust, and had<br />

done <strong>the</strong> work required at her hand by <strong>the</strong> Lord;<br />

but when she neglected this, and turned from it,<br />

God took <strong>the</strong> Medes and <strong>the</strong> Persians and through<br />

<strong>the</strong>m brought punishment upon <strong>the</strong> guilty nation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> Medo-Persia filled <strong>the</strong> world;<br />

but she also apostatized from <strong>the</strong> task assigned her<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Lord, and her place and her station was<br />

taken by Greece, <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> brass. And when<br />

<strong>the</strong> iniquity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transgressors in Greece was<br />

come to <strong>the</strong> full, God took <strong>the</strong> Romans, and, evil as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were, used <strong>the</strong>m to punish Greece. But <strong>the</strong>y,<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> turning to <strong>the</strong> Lord, only increased in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir wickedness, until in 476 a. d. <strong>the</strong> empire <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Romans fell into ruins; and from her ruins and<br />

ashes arose <strong>the</strong> ten kingdoms represented by <strong>the</strong><br />

ten toes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> image, part <strong>of</strong> iron and part <strong>of</strong><br />

potter’s clay, partly strong and partly brittle. Of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se, three were plucked up by <strong>the</strong> roots, as<br />

brought to view in Daniel 7, and <strong>the</strong> remaining<br />

seven stand till <strong>the</strong> present day as <strong>the</strong> kingdoms <strong>of</strong><br />
