<strong>the</strong> Roman army did invest Jerusalem, and <strong>the</strong>y did<br />

stand “in <strong>the</strong> holy place.” <strong>The</strong> armies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Romans no longer exist. Long since <strong>the</strong>ir legions<br />

and centuries have been laid to molder in <strong>the</strong> dust.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> principleswhich were back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

armies still live, and will live until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world. <strong>The</strong> armies <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong> men who<br />

formed <strong>the</strong> legions, were no more abominable or<br />

desolating in <strong>the</strong>ir behavior than <strong>the</strong> troops <strong>of</strong> any<br />

army. War is inhuman, but war by <strong>the</strong> Romans was<br />

no more inhuman than by scores <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r nations.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Roman rule was a denial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctrine that<br />

all men are created equal, and that governments<br />

derive <strong>the</strong>ir just powers from <strong>the</strong> consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

governed. And it is <strong>the</strong>se principles <strong>of</strong> arbitrary<br />

government which have always everywhere caused<br />

abominable desolation, which still live, and which<br />

will live till <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> this earth in its present<br />

form is brought to a close.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Lord had set Jerusalem in <strong>the</strong> earth to be a<br />

light to all <strong>the</strong> nations round about. It was <strong>the</strong> will<br />

<strong>of</strong> God that from <strong>the</strong> sacred citadel at Jerusalem<br />
