was on trial in <strong>the</strong> Civil war. <strong>The</strong> struggle was to<br />

test whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> government conceived in liberty<br />

was so to endure. <strong>The</strong> brave men who shed <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

blood, shed it in behalf <strong>of</strong> liberty and equality.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y courted death, and flocked to its arbitrary and<br />

despotic arms, in order that <strong>the</strong> nation <strong>of</strong> liberty<br />

and equality might live.<br />

Every principle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Declaration <strong>of</strong><br />

Independence was at stake; and as <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Declaration were <strong>the</strong> vital life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation, it<br />

logically followed that if those principles were<br />

abandoned, <strong>the</strong> ruin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young <strong>Republic</strong> was<br />

assured. Lincoln’s whole effort was one in behalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Declaration--for liberty and equality.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> champions <strong>of</strong> slavery a plea<br />

was set up that <strong>the</strong> Declaration did not mean just<br />

what it said; that <strong>the</strong> clause, “all men are created<br />

equal,” was not a self-evident truth, but on <strong>the</strong><br />

contrary, a “selfevident lie.” It was held that <strong>the</strong><br />

framers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great charter <strong>of</strong> our liberties never<br />

intended to include <strong>the</strong> negro in <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

word “all” in <strong>the</strong> clause above quoted. In fact,<br />
