In taking this position it is difficult to see why we<br />

must not also incidentally admit that, in <strong>the</strong> great<br />

contention preceding our war <strong>of</strong> independence, <strong>the</strong><br />

first armed clash <strong>of</strong> which resounded here in<br />

Lexington, Great Britain was more nearly right<br />

than <strong>the</strong> exponents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principles for which<br />

those ‘embattled farmers’ contended.”[1]<br />

Sad though it be to pen it, it is even true that <strong>the</strong><br />

great principles which were born at Lexington and<br />

Concord were buried at Manila, and <strong>the</strong> wheels <strong>of</strong><br />

time turned back, and <strong>the</strong> old order <strong>of</strong> things<br />

substituted for <strong>the</strong> new. This is <strong>America</strong>n<br />

imperialism. This is national apostasy; and since<br />

<strong>the</strong> course upon which <strong>the</strong> nation has entered is so<br />

manifest, <strong>the</strong> destiny to which she is doomed is<br />

equally manifest,--<strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military<br />

nations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old World, upon whom she has for<br />

so long looked down with pitying glances. Nations<br />

may be defeated by <strong>the</strong> acts <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, but <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

be degraded only by <strong>the</strong>ir own. She has not been<br />

defeated by <strong>the</strong> deeds <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, but she has been<br />

degraded, and is even now being dragged into <strong>the</strong><br />

mire, by her own. Her character as a nation, first<br />
