lie;” now a noted divine declares it to be a<br />

doctrine “palmed <strong>of</strong>f by <strong>the</strong> devil upon a credulous<br />

world.” Again it must be said that <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ories<br />

which have ruled in <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> governmental<br />

affairs during <strong>the</strong> past few months can only be<br />

construed as <strong>the</strong> desertion <strong>of</strong> sacred principles once<br />

held dear by <strong>the</strong> nation; and while <strong>the</strong>re exists in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Philippines a state <strong>of</strong> war, <strong>the</strong>re exists in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>America</strong> a state <strong>of</strong> NATIONAL<br />

APOSTASY.<br />

In one <strong>of</strong> his speeches Lincoln once quoted<br />

<strong>the</strong>se words from <strong>the</strong> Scriptures: “A house divided<br />

against itself can not stand.” <strong>The</strong>n he added <strong>the</strong>se<br />

words:--<br />

“I believe this government can not endure<br />

permanently half slave and half free. I do not<br />

expect <strong>the</strong> Union to be dissolved; I do not expect<br />

<strong>the</strong> house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be<br />

divided. It will become all one thing, or all <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. Ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> opponents <strong>of</strong> slavery will arrest<br />
