made a mere wreck, a mangled ruin, <strong>of</strong> our once<br />

glorious Declaration. But verily it is true now as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong>n, that “its authors meant it to be, as,<br />

thank God, it is now proving itself, a stumblingblock<br />

to all those who in aftertimes might seek to<br />

turn a free people back into <strong>the</strong> hateful paths <strong>of</strong><br />

despotism. <strong>The</strong>y knew <strong>the</strong> proneness <strong>of</strong> prosperity<br />

to breed tyrants, and <strong>the</strong>y meant that when such<br />

should reappear in this fair land, and commence<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir vocation, <strong>the</strong>y should find left for <strong>the</strong>m at<br />

least one hard nut to crack.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> advocates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imperialistic policy<br />

frequently cite past events in our national history in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ory. <strong>The</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs are quoted, and<br />

chief among <strong>the</strong>m Thomas Jefferson. Never<strong>the</strong>less,<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> statesmen who ever lived none was more<br />

hostile to colonial policy than was <strong>the</strong> sage <strong>of</strong><br />

Monticello.<br />

A well-known statesman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present day has<br />

divided imperialism, as it now presents itself, into<br />

four distinct propositions, as follows:--<br />
