injustice of slavery itself. I hate it because it
deprives our republican example of its just

with plausibility, to taunt us as hypocrites; causes
the real friends of freedom to doubt our sincerity;
and especially because it forces so many really
good men among ourselves into an open war with
the very fundamental principles of civil liberty,
criticizing the Declaration of Independence.”[2]
Once again the time has come when the
Declaration of Independence is not held sacred by
all, is not thought to include all. Once again, to
make the bondage, not of the negro, but of the
Filipino, universal and eternal, “it is assailed, and
sneered at, and hawked at, and, torn, till, if its
framers could rise from their graves, they could not
