91 Urban Design Guidelines for Barrie’s Intensification Areas - DRAFT Building Articulation and Detailing g) New buildings within the historic neighbourhoods should not mimic adjacent heritage properties, but should have sympathetic window alignment, roof-lines, entrance location, ground floor treatment and materials. h) The original façade materials on buildings within the historic neighbourhoods should not be changed or covered. Façade renovation should be in keeping with the original building articulation, using those elements that are intact and replacing those that are missing or damaged (i.e. columns, cornices, openings, windows, doors, etc.). i) Wherever possible, existing windows and doors should be restored and made energy efficient. Their replacement should be seen as a last resort. Materials m) Additions or renovations within a historic neighbourhhod should use materials that match or enhance the original structure (e.g. color, texture, scale, etc.). n) Where appropriate, heritage structures should be retained and incorporated into new developments, through adaptive re-use. o) In all renovations/alterations to properties within historic neighbourhoods, a heritage professional should be involved to ensure the most appropriate renovation techniques and materials are employed.
