THE BANKSVILLE GOLF CLUB
by Doris Finch Watso~~
Nortli Castle Town Historian
IT DID NOT GO AWAY EASILY. Indeed, numerous people implored the
County, the Town and several orficials to "save the Banksville Golf Club,
not only for continuing use by its members, but to preserve its beautifill
open land for the fi~h~re." But in the end, it was lost forever, gone like so
many oilier treasures of the past, where only the rnemories remain.
LOOIUNG BACK
The history of the land, where the Banltsville Golf Club stood for nearly
three decades, is long and diverse. During the Revolutionary War it was
part of the sprawling farnlland of James Banks', a member of the family
for whom the l~amlet of Banksville is naned. Durlng the 1800s it was the
farm of .I. Hobby'. By 1893 Hobby descendants, James Bums and George
Hobby, were the owners3 of that huge acreage; thus the present Hobby
Farm Drive and Hobby Lane carry fonvard the early Hobby name for
those who reside there today.
By World War I1 some fifty-four acres of that vast fann had been sold to
George Fordham who retained ownership into the 1950s: Aroiuld that
period four i~nportant changes came to Banksville - all in the 1950s and
early 1960s:
