<strong>The</strong>re was a time in Armonk when a ~nusical bell that rang out througlr the<br />

streets created almost as much excitement as that <strong>of</strong> an ice cream tmck.<br />

Its peal was filled with the promise <strong>of</strong> mystery, adventure, poetry and<br />

prose that brought the world to one's door It was the bell attached to the<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Castle</strong> Free Library's Bookmobile, and it rode around Armonk,<br />

Banksville and <strong>North</strong> White Plains delivering fun and fulfillment lo those<br />

residents eager for a good read.<br />

To find the driving force behind our library's Bool;l~obile one must turn<br />

back the pages <strong>of</strong> time to 1936 when a local invalid child's longing for<br />

books sparked a big idea, culminati~lg in the creation <strong>of</strong> a volunteer free<br />

libray, which, five years later resided in its own building on its present<br />

site on Whippoonvill Road East. Miss Julia Bennett, anAnnonk realtor by<br />

trade and volunteer extraodinaire, was the first to take the necessary steps<br />

to find out what was entailed in starling a library.
