MD's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Some me ago, I was scanning the web for some informa on
when I came across a very interes ng piece tled “Unsung”
which featured people from different parts of India who
chose to be selfless and decided to make a difference to
society in their own way. The stories were so engaging that I
ended up reading most of them. And that's when I thought of
Tulasi Munda who is a noted social ac vist from Odisha and
was awarded Padma Shri in 2001. She has done a lot of work
to spread literacy among the tribal people. She would o en
say
“If you really want to make a difference in society, you have to be selfless”
I agree with her because, the society that we live in gives us a lot and it is our duty to give some of it back.
Only when we work selflessly towards bringing about a change, we can achieve something. Today
corporate social responsibility (CSR) is strategic for an organiza on's sustainability, but what about ISR
i.e. “Individual Social Responsibility”. We as individuals have a certain responsibility towards bringing
about a posi ve change in our society.
Maybe some me when you can, you should visit www.unsung.in which is a tribute to ordinary Indian
ci zens who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of people around them . Their inner
resources – vision, will, commitment, energy – compensate for their lack of financial resources. They
operate in the shadows, far from the glitz of fame and fortune. Their stories are inspira onal. They teach
us how we can beat all odds if we harness and channel ourselves.
When individual social responsibility becomes a way of life the results will start showing. When we
actually want to make a sustainable difference by teaching school children or walking to work for the
benefit of the environment, the results will be evident. It is then that we will realize that we can
contribute in many ways with the different skill sets we have and help those who are less privileged.
Like they say, “every drop counts”. As individuals, crea ng a healthier and happier society should be our
mission. Respect for our environment and society is integral to our value system the same should be
exhibited by every GHCLite.
I would appreciate if you all can share your sugges ons and ideas towards the concept of the ISR. Where
would you like to volunteer and the various ac vi es that are directed towards fostering change.
I believe that such an experience will posi vely affect your personality and bring you a great sense of
sa sfac on.
Regards,
R S Jalan
Honey –nature's original sweetener
Honey –nature's original sweetener, is a natural source of energy that has a unique combina on of
nutri onal, therapeu c and healing quali es.
Honey has long been used as a replacement to sugar. It is widely used in the cosme c and medicine
industries across the world. Honey finds its men on in several religious texts such as the Hindu
scriptures, the Jewish Tanakh and the Holy Quran along with Buddhism and Chris anity. Ayurveda,
India's ancient system of medicine, has highlighted the benefits of honey for centuries. Across cultures,
honey is termed as 'The Nectar of the Gods'.
People of all age group consume honey. With the growing consciousness surrounding health, the
demand of honey has seen a great rise. Consumers seeking healthier and natural op ons of sweetener
turn to honey which is a natural energy booster too.
Honey is available in our natural forests and is also collected through apiaries all over the country. Being
a 100% natural product, derived out of nectar from flowers and made by honey bees, it has zero fat and
zero cholesterol, and ideally suits to the modern-day hec c lifestyle.
To start the produc on and export of honey, the business operator needs to obtain a number of
cer fica ons as this category requires to follow many stringent norms of quality and safety. There are
standards for the composi on, moisture content, fructose, sucrose and glucose percentages,
conduc vity and floral source. All of these need be taken into account in order to maintain and improve
the quality of honey. Business operators have to put forth robust QC procedures, with well-documented
processes that ensure traceability ll the beekeeper's level.
Honey is regulated under the Preven on of Food Adultera on Rules, 1955, the voluntary Bureau of
Indian Standards for ISI mark, and Honey Grading and Marking Rules, 2008, under the Agricultural
Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937, also known as AGMARK.
All of the above define honey as a natural product and lay down standards for its composi on and
quality.
The availability of honey across all seasons adds up to its industry's profit which is moving on a rapid
growth rate. The branded honey market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10 per
cent, with a current market size of Rs.700 crores. India produces 7000 million tons of honey, out of
which 50 per cent is exported annually. As per industry es mates, it is believed that the size of both the
branded and unbranded segments in the Indian market is approximately Rs.2000 crore. Within this, the
share of branded honey is approximately Rs.700-800 crore. There has been a steady surge in the organic
honey market. The industry is s ll considered niche but the product is gradually finding its place in the
mass consumers' household.
i-FLO Honey is a pure and one of the best in terms of quality. We have a strong sourcing point along with
huge global volumes, hence we do not compromise on the quality and purity of the product.
stands out as a brand.
In 2017, i-FLO launched Jujube Honey under its premium category of products. This honey is sourced
from the bees that feed on the exo c fruit Jujube. It is highly used in the Chinese, Korean and Persian
inflammatory, seda on, an spas c, hypotensive and an nephri c, cardio-tonic, an oxidant,
Supply Chain- The Missing Link in Sustainability!
This month from the sustainability desk, we have come up
with an ar cle to enlighten our readers on supply chain
sustainability. Supply chain sustainability basically is the
management of environmental, social and economic
impacts, along with the encouragement of good governance
prac ces, throughout the lifecycles of goods and services.
The main objec ve of supply chain sustainability is to create,
protect and grow long-term environmental, social and
economic value for all stakeholders involved in bringing
products and services to market.
Business
Integrity
Labor Standards &
Human Rights
Supply Chain
Environment
Health &
Safety
Historically, supply chain was simply about logis cs and knowing when and where goods were moving,
but with increasing technological advancements & accompanying visibility in all aspects has provided
companies with the ability to gather data about how well each component in the supply chain
demonstrates social & environmental responsibility. This transparency has promoted the concept of
responsible sourcing and encouraged supply chain partners to develop and share best prac ces for
sustainable opera ons and logis cs along with demonstra ng
compliance with industry best standards for worker safety,
environmental protec on and business ethics. Increased visibility has
also led to heightened consumer awareness and increased demand that
firms ensure environmental & social sustainability through the en re
supply chain.
As ini al step towards supply chain sustainability for a business is to iden fy the high priority supply
chain issues, evaluate environmental & social risks and opportuni es. Many organiza ons are also
driven by their corporate values and culture to address sustainability issues. For such organiza ons, the
fact that supply chain sustainability is the right thing to do and is a driver of social development and
environmental protec on helps create internal buy-in and commitment. The most common business
drivers for supply chain sustainability are depicted in the figure below:
An Overview of the Goods and Services Tax
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a landmark step taken by the Government
of India to boost the GDP and introduce a more effec ve tax regime.
It brings benefits to all the stakeholders of the industry, government and the
consumer. It will lower the cost of goods and services to give a boost to the
economy and make the products and services globally compe ve. By
Deepak Singhal
subsuming most of the central and state taxes into a single tax and by allowing (AGM Taxa on – Ahmedabad)
a set-off of prior-stage taxes for the transac ons across the en re value chain, it mi gates the ill effects
of cascading and improves compe veness and liquidity of the businesses.
GST is applicable to all dealers whose aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds INR 20 lacs (INR 10
lacs in case of eleven special category states). Separate registra on is required in every state from
where a taxable supply of goods or services is made.
Mechanism for Administra on - GST is levied both by Central & State Governments. For transac ons
within a State, there are two components of GST - Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) - levied on
the value of goods and services. Both the Centre and the States will simultaneously levy GST across the
value chain.
In the case of inter-State transac ons, the Centre would levy and collect the Integrated Goods and
Services Tax (IGST). The IGST would be roughly equal to CGST plus SGST.
A comprehensive IT system, GSTN, is established that allots universal GST numbers (similar to PAN) to
all manufacturers, traders, stockists, wholesalers and retailers. This will simplify the administra on of
indirect taxes and plug leakages. The government also plans to incen vise tax compliance by traders.
Interna onal Scenario - In the 1954, France became the first country to adopt the GST. More than 150
countries have introduced GST/Na onal VAT in some form. It has been a part of the tax system in
Europe for the past 50 years and is the preferred form of the indirect tax in the Asia-Pacific region.
There are different models of GST currently in force, each with its own peculiari es. While country
such as Singapore virtually taxes everything at a single rate, some countries have more than one rate
(a zero rate, certain exemp ons and higher and lower rates). Brazil and Canada follow a dual system
where both Union and State Governments levy GST. The standard GST rates in most of the countries
ranges between 15-20%.
Rates - GST is imposed at variable rates on variable items. The rate slabs fixed under GST are 5%, 12%,
18% & 28%. Rate of 0.125% to 3% are also fixed for some handful of items viz. jewellery, precious
stones. Some industries and products are exempted by the government and remain untaxed under
GST.
Goods Kept Outside the GST - Alcohol for human consump on, petrol and petroleum products viz.
Petroleum crude, High speed diesel, Motor Spirit (petrol), Natural gas, Avia on turbine fuel.
June 2018
Advantages of GST -
1. GST is structured to simplify the current indirect system by removing mul ple taxes. It creates India as a
single market.
2. It taxes goods and services at the same rates so many disputes are eliminated on tax ma er.
3. The procedural cost is reduced due to uniform accoun ng namely, CGST, SGST, IGST have to be
maintained for all types of taxes.
4. More business en es including unorganized will come under the tax system thus widening the
tax base. This may lead to be er and more tax revenue collec ons.
Disadvantages of GST:
1. There will be dual control on every business by Central and State Government. So compliance cost will
go up.
2. All input credit will be available from online connec vity with GST Network. Hence, small businesses
may find it difficult to use the system.
3. States will lose autonomy to change their tax rates.
4. Manufacturing states would lose big revenue as the revenue will shi to consuming states.
5. GSTN may not work op mally for quite some me posing problems for businesses in compliance.
However all said and done GST indeed is a revolu onary step in the history of India and is certainly expected
to put the growth engine of Indian economy on a high note.
Discover the 90/10 Principle
Mr. Sanjay Gupta
(DGM Purchase – Ahmedabad)
How? ……….By your reac on.
It will change your life (at least the way you react to situa ons).
What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you.
90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have
no control over 10% of what happens to us.
We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving,
which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic.
We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different.
You determine the other 90%.
You cannot control a red light. but you can control your reac on. Don't let
people fool you; YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example.
Author: Stephen Covey
You are ea ng breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your
business shirt. You have no control over what just happened.
What happens next will be determined by how you react.
You curse.
You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. A er scolding her,
you turn to your spouse and cri cize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short
verbal ba le follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter
has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school.
Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.
A er a 15-minute delay and throwing $ 60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into
the building without saying goodbye. A er arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot
your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it con nues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look
forward to coming home.
When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your rela onship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? …. Because of how you reacted in the morning.
Why did you have a bad day?
The answer is “D".
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what
caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened.
Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "Its ok honey, you just need to be
more careful next me". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. A er grabbing a new shirt and your
briefcase, you come back down in me to look through the window and see your child ge ng on the bus.
She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on
how good the day you are having.
No ce the difference?
Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.
Why?
Because of how you REACTED.
You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your
reac on.
Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone says something nega ve about you, don't
be a sponge. Let the a ack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the nega ve comment affect
you!
React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reac on could result in losing a friend, being fired,
ge ng stressed out etc.
How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering
wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure
skyrocket? Do you try and bump them?
WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
You are told you lost your job.
Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and me into finding
another job.
The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take outpour frustra on on the
flight a endant? She has no control over what is going on.
Use your me to study, get to know the other passenger. Why get stressed out? It will just make things
worse.
Now you know the 90 -10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose
nothing if you try it. The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle.
The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. We all must
understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
It can change your life!!!
Introduction To Data Analytics
Data science is a set of fundamental principles that guide the extrac on of
knowledge from the data. With vast amount of data now available, companies
in almost every industry are focused on exploi ng data for compe ve edge.
Computers have become far more powerful, networking has become
ubiquitous, and algorithms have been developed that can connect datasets to
enable broader and deeper analysis than previously possible. The convergence
of this phenomenon has given rise to increasingly widespread business
applica ons of data science principles and data mining techniques.
S. N. Deshpande
Data analy cs (DA) is the process of examining data sets in order to draw conclusion about the
informa on it contains. It is not a tool or technology, rather it is the way of thinking and ac ng on data.
PREDECTIVE ANALYTICS
Predic on is booming. It reinvents the industries and run the world.
More and more predic ve analy cs drives commerce, manufacturing,
healthcare, Government, and law enforcement. In these spheres
organiza ons operate more effec vely by way of predic ng behaviour i.e.
Outcome of each individual customer, employee, pa ent, voter and suspect.
High performance sales team is four mes more likely to already be using
predic ve analy cs than underperformers.
PREDICTION IN BIG BUSINESS - THE DESTINY OF ASSETS
Predic on is power. Big business secures a killer compe ve stronghold by predic ng the future
des ny and value of individual assets. In this case by driving mortgage decisions with predic ons about
the future payment behaviour of homeowners, Chase curtailed risk, boosted profit are some of
obvious benefits of data analy cs.
Following are the few challenges which are best addressed with predic on. Will the pa ent's outcome
from surgery be posi ve? Will the credit applicant turn out to be a fraudster? Will the home owner face
a bad mortgage? Will the air fare go down? Will the customer respond if mailed a brochure? By
predic ng these things, it is possible to for fy healthcare, combat risk, conquer spam, toughen crime
figh ng, boost sales, and cut costs.
Few examples out of large poten al which Data Analy cs can predict from data are as below:
1) Australian energy company Energex predicts electricity demand in order to decide where to build
out its power grid, and Con Edison predicts system failure in the face of high levels of consump on.
2) Wall Street firm's trade algorithmically, buying and selling based on the predic on of stock prices.
3) Companies predict which customer will buy their products in order to target their marke ng.
4) The leading career- focused social network, LinkedIn, predicts your job skills.
5) Clinical researchers predict infidelity and divorce. There's even a self help website tool to put odds on
your marriage's long term success (www. Divorce probability .com )
6) Obama was re elected in 2012 with the help of voter predic on.
7) “What did you mean by that?” Systems have learned to ascertain the intent behind the wri en word.
Ci bank and PayPal detect the customer sen ment about their products, and one researcher's
machine can tell which Amazon.com which book reviews are sarcas c.
8) Computers can literally read your mind. Researchers trained systems to decode a scan of your brain
and determine which type of object you're thinking about-such as certain tools, buildings and food
with 80 percent accuracy for some human subjects.
9) Helwle -Packard (HP) earmarks each and every one of its more than 300000 worldwide employees
according to “Flight Risk”, the expected chance he or she will quit their job, so the managers will
intervene in advance where possible and plan accordingly otherwise.
10) The American Public University system predicted student dropouts and used these predic ons to
intervene successfully
11) Wikipedia predicts which of its editors, who work for free as a labor of love to keep this priceless
online asset alive are going to discon nue their valuable service.
12) Researchers at Havard Medical School predict that if your friends stop smoking you are more likely to
do so yourself as well . Qui ng smoking is contagious.
13) Insurance Companies predict who is going to crash a car or hurt themselves another way (such as a
ski accident). Allstate predicts bodily injury liability from car crashes based on the characteris cs of
insured vehicle. demonstra ng improvements to predic on that could be worth an es mated $40
million annually. Another top insurance provider reported savings of almost $ 50 million per year by
expanding its actuarial prac ces with advanced predic ve techniques.
14) Ford is learning from data so its cars can detect when the driver is not alert due to distrac on, fa gue
or intoxica on and take ac on such as sounding an alarm.
15) Researchers have iden fied avia on incidents that are five mes more likely than average to be fatal
using data from Na onal Transporta on safety board.
16) All large banks and credit card companies which debtors are more likely to turn offenders, failing to
pay back their loans or credit card balances. Collec on agencies priori ze their efforts with
predic ons of which tac c has the best chance to recoup the most from each defaul ng debtor.
17) Beyond life insurance, one top-five health insurance company predicts the probability that elderly
insurance policyholders will pass away within 18 months based on clinical markers in the insured's
recent medical claims. Fear not-it's actually done for benevolent purposes.
18) Murder is widely considered impossible to predict with meaningful accuracy in general, but within atrisk
popula on predic ve methods can be effec ve. Maryland analy cally generates predic ons as
to which inmates will kill or be killed. University law enforcement researchers have developed
predic ve systems that foretell murder among those previously convicted for homicide.
19) One fraud expert at a large bank at United Kingdom extended his work to discover a small pool of
terror suspects based on their banking ac vi es. While few details have been disclosed publicly. It's
clear that the Na onal Security Agency also considers this type of analysis a strategic priority in order
to automa cally discover previously unknown poten al suspects.
20) The IRS (Indian Revenue service) predicts if you are chea ng on your taxes.
Book Review
Emo onal Agility
Get Unstuck, Embrace Change, and
Thrive in Work and Life
To be emo onally agile is to be flexible with our thoughts and feelings, and not hold impenetrable, the
concrete beliefs of our past, as this cannot lead to change. A seed cannot grow from concrete, only from
a mixture of fer le soil, water and sunlight. In the same way, we must allow a combina on of different
experiences and thoughts to shape us, and not be bound to a certain number of beliefs that we have
always held.
Susan David, PhD and psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical
School, asks us to consider who's in charge – the thinker or the
thought. Her point is that if we want to be emo onally agile in all
areas of our life - that is, able to choose our response and not get
hooked by thoughts and feelings that don't serve us, we need to be
able to follow four basic principles outlined in the book.
Susan David
Dr. David cites four key concepts: showing up, stepping out, walking your why and moving on. These
concepts emphasise the overall stance she takes in her book and are fundamental in crea ng emo onal
agility and adap veness:
Showing Up:
To face your thoughts or feelings is arguably the most
difficult thing to do but is also the most impera ve to
facilitate posi ve change. David suggests being curious
of them, accep ng the difficult and posi ve thoughts
equally in order to see them for what they are.
Stepping Out:
This concept is all about detachment, a detachment
from your inner monologue, thoughts and feelings, in
order to see that they are just emo ons, not you. These
emo ons are not bound to you and are not an essen al
part of your being. To detach from them will result in
you feeling far more autonomous over your ac ons and
decisions.
To be emo onally agile is to be
flexible with our thoughts and
feelings, and not hold impenetrable,
the concrete beliefs of our past, as
this cannot lead to change. A seed
cannot grow from concrete, only
from a mixture of fer le soil, water
and sunlight. In the same way, we
must allow a combina on of
different experiences and thoughts
to shape us, and not be bound to a
certain number of beliefs that we
have always held.
Walking Your Why:
You need to retain core values, as these are a fundamental part of who you are. You shouldn't give these
up, but use them to dictate your ac ons. They provide you with your substance, your iden ty and roles,
and as long as they aren't nega ve values then no refinement is needed. Your values are your driving
force.
Moving On:
David's next step of moving on involves making small, deliberate and purposeful tweaks to your mind set,
mo va on, and habits to align them with your core values. In doing so, she says you can make a
significant difference in your life. You should never be complacent, but should always seek change that
will further develop and improve your being.
This book examines adapta on and advocates for consistent values as the core of who we are – the only
transient point for values is to refine them when necessary, in order to evolve. We can never s ck too
strongly to an emo on, thought or feeling, and learn to accept these as flee ng and allow them to move
on. Only when we do this, can we catalyse and bring about healthy change.
Why This Method Is So Important
As humans, we go through constant change, from our faces changing as we age and our changing
financial situa ons as we go from students to adults in the 'real world', to perhaps having children and
learning to priori se another human life before our own. In order to embrace these changes and cherish
and u lise them to the maximum, we need to be able to be adapt.
We cannot be impeded by our old beliefs, as these old mentali es do not inspire growth and
adaptability. We cannot expect the same rules or ac ons to be applicable across the mul tude of
experiences and circumstances that we go through in our lives. Therefore, in order to embrace change
posi vely and experience posi ve emo ons surrounding these changes, we must be emo onally agile,
shi ing our mind set to the new situa on at hand.
scared of, but the change in themselves – in case they don't like the new person that they become. Many
people claim they are scared of change, due to its existen al, environmental implica ons. Yet, perhaps it
is not the changing of the world around them that they are
Change confronts us during significant, inescapable life events such as death, causing us to face these
inevitabili es, despite that we may want to hold on to a par cular me or state. In these moments we
cannot do this, we are not frozen, but instead we are in constant evolu on and we must use our
emo onal agility to facilitate a healthy transi on from one state to the next.
And fast to appreciate.”
