Its mission is to enrich the quality of community life and promote wholesome activities through creative programming for people of all ages and abilities, while protecting open space and natural resources for future generations. The Park District oversees 314.4 acres of parks and playground properties which include a nature center and a portion of the Green Bay Bike Trail, along with a spectacular lakefront, that combine to create the ambiance that is one of the primary reasons people want to live in, and continue to move to, our community. The Park District also owns and operates several facilities which include the Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Road; Centennial Recreation Complex, 2300 Old Glenview Road; The Mallinckrodt Center, 1041A Ridge Road; Wilmette Golf Club, 3900 Fairway Drive; Wilmette Platform Tennis Club, 3551 Lake Avenue; the Lakeview Center, Wallace Bowl and Gillson Beach House located on the waterfront. It is empowered to levy taxes, acquire land, develop parks, build and operate recreation facilities and establish programs. There are about 70 full-time employees, but part-time and seasonal employees swell the ranks to over 1,000 individuals, many of them village youth, especially during the summer months. Residents receive an Explore Guide in the mail three times a year which details Park District programs and special events. Separate Tennis and Summer Camp Guides are mailed out annually. The Park District also maintains a website which provides online registration, up to date information regarding facilities, programs and special events, calendars and downloadable forms and newsletters. It can be accessed at www.wilmettepark.org. The Park District receives 30% of revenue from taxes; the remainder is user fees.
