RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: supporting artists from the South West
Supporting artists at different stages of their career and creating the space to nurture new projects and ideas is a key
strand of our artistic vision. Over the coming months and years we will build on the existing talent support programmes
of the three legacy organisations, developing a wide ranging programme of activity. For more information about
opportunities for professional development and information about how we support artists from the South West and
beyond, please visit our Artist Development page at www.wiltshirecreative.co.uk and sign up to our Artists News List.
Welcome to Wiltshire Creative
@wiltscreative
This is a landmark moment in the history of arts in Salisbury and Wiltshire, which we have been preparing
for over the last two years. We are, therefore, very proud and delighted to present our first season of
work as Wiltshire Creative, bringing together the combined vision, creative energy and ambition of
Salisbury Arts Centre, Salisbury International Arts Festival and Salisbury Playhouse.
Looking through the pages of this brochure we hope you will discover much that is familiar as well as
projects, productions and events that signpost new directions of travel. We are delighted to be producing
the regional premiere of Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Her Naked Skin, in the anniversary year of female suffrage.
We are also pleased to be producing A Wiltshire Tale by Nick Harper which will be touring round Wiltshire
as well as playing at the Arts Centre. We are also excited by our new Christmas Crackers cabaret season
at the Arts Centre, when you will be able to enjoy a variety of cabaret acts as you wine and dine. In addition
we are thrilled to be co-producing a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d with Wales
Millennium Centre, which will open in February 2019. These are just a few appetisers for the feast of
shows and activities you will find inside this brochure. We are also hugely excited as we prepare to relaunch
the Salisbury International Arts Festival and reveal the Guest Director for 2019.
As we embark on this exciting new venture we want to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make
it possible and in particular to you, our audience, for your patience and engagement during the period of
transition. We have been overwhelmed by your warmth and generosity as we enter a new chapter for arts
in the city and county.
We hope you find much here to enjoy and look forward to welcoming you to an event very soon.
A Festival of Celebration
Join us in 2019 for the return of the Salisbury International Arts Festival.
Exploding out of the Playhouse and Arts Centre, into the streets and
spaces of the city, this two-week Festival of Celebration will mark the
culmination of Wiltshire Creative’s first year.
We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Dove, one of our leading
composers, will join us as Guest Festival Director in the year that he
celebrates his 60th birthday. He will curate a thrilling programme of
work capturing the highlights of his varied and illustrious career.
2019 will also see the Festival mark two anniversaries of global
significance.
50 years ago, in July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the
moon. 30 years ago, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall came down, heralding the collapse of
the Soviet bloc. Both events played out against the backdrop of the Cold War and, at a time of
increasing tension between East and West. We will look back at these two inspirational moments
and their contemporary resonances.
2019 will also see the first Festival of Ideas – a mini festival within the Festival – that will reflect on
important global issues.
THE FULL PROGRAMME OF FESTIVAL EVENTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED EARLY IN 2019
A WILTSHIRE CREATIVE PRODUCTION
Her Naked Skin
By Rebecca Lenkiewicz
Love is just fear I suppose. Masquerading as a fever.
Then you explore each other and suddenly you have
licence to become totally pedestrian. And ultimately
abusive.
London 1913. Militancy in the suffragette movement is
at its height. Hundreds of women of all classes serve
time in Holloway Prison in their fight to gain the vote.
Amongst them is Lady Celia Cain who feels trapped
by both the policies of the day and the shackles of
a frustrating marriage. Inside, she meets a young
seamstress, Eve Douglas, and her life spirals into erotic
but dangerous chaos.
Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Her Naked Skin premiered at the
National Theatre in July 2008.
The professional cast will perform alongside a
community company to present this epic story of
political and personal intensity.
AN APOLLO THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION IN ASSOCIATION
WITH SPIKE MILLIGAN PRODUCTIONS LTD
The Goon Show
By Spike Milligan
From the producers of the critically acclaimed Round the Horne
comes another radio comedy classic live on stage.
In 1951 the landscape of British comedy changed dramatically
when The Goon Show burst onto the airwaves of the BBC Home
Service. Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and co.
brought a brand of surreal chaotic humour unlike anything
that had been heard before and revolutionised the way radio
comedy was produced.
With its bizarre characters, fantastical plots and hilarious
running jokes, The Goon Show captured the imagination of the
British public and made household names of its three main
stars, all of whom would go on to achieve fame across the
globe. The show’s impact is still felt today with comedians like
Eddie Izzard citing the show as a major influence.
IN ASSOCIATION WITH BIRMINGHAM REPERTORY THEATRE
Duet For One
By Tom Kempinski
Originally enjoying an acclaimed run in the West End, Tom Kempinski’s
multi award-winning play comes to Salisbury.
In this powerful, deeply moving and poignantly funny play, Stephanie
Abrahams (Belinda Lang), a brilliant concert violinist who seemingly has
it all, is forced to re-evaluate her life when struck down by an unforeseen
tragedy.
Faced with a truth too difficult to comprehend, she consults psychiatrist
Dr Feldmann (Oliver Cotton) and through a series of highly charged
encounters is led to examine her deepest emotions and finally consider
a future without music.
This dazzling play, featuring two of British theatre’s finest actors, is a
gripping, witty and ultimately life-enhancing tribute to the human spirit.
‘A joy to watch.’
Financial Times
‘A gripping psychological thriller.’
blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of
King George and Talking Heads.
In The Habit of Art, Bennett gives us a play about a meeting
between the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin
Britten. Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache, this
multi-layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain
and emotional cost of creativity.
This production, directed by Philip Franks,
Abigail’s Party
By Mike Leigh
Made famous by the BBC Play for Today starring Alison
Steadman, Abigail’s Party is an hilarious masterpiece of
situation comedy.
Beverly and husband Laurence are entertaining their
newlywed neighbours. Joining them is twitchy divorcee
Sue, banished from the party of her teenage daughter,
Abigail.
Over a stack of cheesy-pineapple sticks, small talk
and splashes of alcohol, the appalling hosts’ soiree
soon descends into chaos. As the sniping begins, this
delicious comedy cracks open social climbing suburbia
to savagely funny effect.
Beauty and the Beast
The Spellbinding Pantomime
By Andrew Pollard
This famous fairytale follows the story of Beauty who
is taken prisoner by a prince who has been turned into
a Beast. Eventually she grows to love the Beast, thus
lifting a curse and turning him back into a prince.
Written by Andrew Pollard, directed by Ryan McBryde
and designed by James Button (the team behind last
year’s record-breaking Jack and the Beanstalk), Beauty
and the Beast will include all the traditional elements of
pantomime – comedy, song, dance, beautiful sets and
costumes and plenty of audience participation.
A trip to the Playhouse pantomime has become an
important part of Christmas celebrations for families,
schools and groups, with many performances selling
out. To accommodate demand, Beauty and the Beast
will run for an extra week until 13 January.
Agatha Christie
The Mirror Crack’d
Adapted for the stage by
Rachel Wagstaff
Times are changing. Girls are wearing trousers and
Hollywood has come to a sleepy English village in the
shape of a beautiful film star. Miss Marple is left to feel
that the world has no need of her now until a mysterious
death calls into question the past of all those present.
Everyone’s version of events is different. Can Miss
Marple unravel the tangle of lies?
This thrilling new play, based on Agatha Christie’s novel,
explores how we all colour our own memories, our own
truths, to disguise the darkness that lies within.
In this rich, psychological drama, everyone has a
longstanding relationship with his favourite fictional friend.
Shôn first met Robin Hood in the autumn of 1975, as a
our world is heading. This show is his idea. He’s convinced
Lily and the Albatross
In a small coastal village where life revolves around the
sea there lives a girl who walks to a different rhythm.
While the whims of the water control the daily routines of
the community, Lily has a different perspective and finds
herself gazing into the sky, where birds swim weightlessly
above her head before stealing the precious fish from the
fishing nets.
Lily longs for more; more freedom, more excitement and
FRI 2 NOV SALISBURY PLAYHOUSE | THE SALBERG 29
PRESENTED BY THE EGG AND TOBY THOMPSON
I Wish I Was a Mountain
By Toby Thompson
On the day of the famous annual fair, the town of Faldum
receives an unexpected visit.
A wanderer offers to grant a wish to anyone who wants
one. Before long, the city is transformed. Mansions stand
where mud huts once squatted, and beggars ride around
in horse drawn carriages. And one man wishes to be
turned into a mountain.
Written and performed by former Glastonbury Poetry Slam
Champion Toby Thompson, I Wish I Was a Mountain uses
rhyme, live music, and just a smattering of metaphysical
philosophy to boldly reimagine Herman Hesse’s classic
fairytale.
SALISBURY PLAYHOUSE | THE SALBERG
CO-PRODUCED BY CLEAN BREAK AND THEATR CLWYD
Thick As Thieves
By Katherine Chandler
Two women from very different worlds: Karen has built a
picture-perfect life while Gail struggles to keep hers together.
When Gail re-enters Karen’s life from out of the blue she
brings with her everything Karen has been running from...
Tickets £13.50
(under 25s £9)
This tense, revealing play explores what it means to care
for one another and asks who, in a time of increasing
disconnect, we expect to look after us.
Clean Break was set up in 1979 by two women prisoners
who believed that theatre could bring the hidden stories
of imprisoned women to a wider audience. Still the only
women’s theatre company of its kind, Clean Break has
remained true to these roots and continues to inspire
playwrights and captivate audiences with groundbreaking
plays on the theme of women and crime.
PRODUCED BY PIPPA FRITH, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ARTS ALIVE AND SHROPSHIRE ARCHIVES,
SUPPORTED BY PENTABUS, AND THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND
My Dearest Girls
The Letter Book
Francesca Millican-Slater creates a brand new piece based
on the real letters sent between a group of six Shropshire
women between 1917-1920.
Against a background of war the women tell each other
stories of their everyday life; as farmers, office workers,
factory hands, nurses and teachers. There is gossip and a
hint of scandal, reprimands and reprisals, tales of dancing
for royalty, fiancés on the frontline and how to feed 100
chickens while on rations.
By combining character, music hall-influenced song and
lyrical storytelling, Francesca invites the audience to
meet, hear and imagine themselves within the lives and
friendships of these women.
‘A rising star.’
