<strong>The</strong> <strong>Spider</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>Butterfly</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> the sacrifices, they are there, consuming the force <strong>and</strong><br />
the subtle matter that has been laid down before them.<br />
It is then the h<strong>and</strong>s of the spirits that touch the altar<br />
<strong>and</strong> transfer inordinate power into the wood, rather than the<br />
h<strong>and</strong>s of the Sorcerer. It is their joining of limbs around<br />
the altar that calls down from heaven <strong>and</strong> up from hell all<br />
of the powers of Magick into your sacred Temple. It is the<br />
alchemical knowledge known only by the spirits that<br />
transmutes the elements of the wood into particles of light,<br />
opening the altar as a gateway into the Eternal.<br />
Chapter Three<br />
Walking with Spirits<br />
Life inside of the Vodoun current is drastically<br />
different than that life which we take for granted when we<br />
are firmly planted in the physical world. Through years of<br />
training, various initiations, <strong>and</strong> through a lifetime of<br />
communion with entities <strong>and</strong> forces which are, to most,<br />
unseen, the Houngan walks between the planes, operating<br />
both here in the physical as well as in the spiritual realms,<br />
each foot steadily maintaining this balance.<br />
This permanent bilocation is observed nowhere<br />
more profoundly than in Haiti itself. Although the vast<br />
majority of Haitians are lost in poverty, war, <strong>and</strong> starvation,<br />
struggling to keep their hold on their most basic primitive<br />
needs, there are also many Sorcerers packed onto this<br />
isl<strong>and</strong> who walk with the spirits, who consistently walk<br />
between the worlds. Those who can see do indeed<br />
recognize that Haiti, the isl<strong>and</strong>, the l<strong>and</strong> that existed before
