and sometimes in the most unexpected
places. If you’ve already visited Punda or
Otrobanda, chances are you saw at least
one of the murals by Garrick Marchena.

Guardian Eyes Mural in Willemstraat, Otrobanda.
Garrick is not just your typical artist. He is also a passionate
storyteller, with a great love for his island and each and
every one of Garrick’s artworks has a story of it’s own.
If you ever have the opportunity to meet him in person, you
will most definitely be amazed by this great human being by
the name of Garrick Marchena.
Up until this day Garrick still gets emotional when talking
about the ‘Angelito Negro’ mural he painted on January 1,
2012. This is a very special mural as Garrick was trying to
send out a positive message to the community, by painting
an angel in a rough alley in Punda. The feedback he received
during and after he finished was so overwhelming that it
inspired several other murals. (See page 17 ‘Mini Street Art
Trip’ for the Angelito Negro mural.) With a background in
Civil Engineering Technology, drawing and painting have
always been part of Garrick’s existence and a few years back
he finally decided to follow his calling. According to Garrick,
an artwork will never be finished and that’s the beauty of it.
People will finish it in their minds and therefore it will have a
different meaning for everyone.

‘Una obra de arte nunca se termina’
Arte callejero se puede encontrar en toda nuestra isla y a
veces en los lugares más inesperados. Si has estado en
Punda o Otrobanda, probablemente viste al menos uno de
los murales de Garrick Marchena. Garrick no es sólamente
tu artista típico. También es un narrador apasionado, con
un gran amor por su isla y cada una de las obras de Garrick
tiene su propia historia. Si alguna vez tienes la oportunidad
de conocerlo en persona, definitivamente te vas a sorprender
por este gran ser humano llamado Garrick Marchena.
Hasta el día de hoy, Garrick todavía se emociona al hablar del
mural ‘Angelito Negro’ que pintó el 1 de Enero del 2012. Este
es un mural muy especial ya que Garrick estaba tratando de
enviar un mensaje positivo a la comunidad, pintando un ángel
en un callejón áspero en Punda. Las reacciones que recibió
durante y al terminar el mural fueron fuentes de inspiración
para varios otros murales. (Vea la página 17 ‘Mini Street Art
Trip’ para el mural de Angelito Negro.) Con un estudio en la
Tecnología de Ingeniería Civil, el dibujo y la pintura han sido
siempre parte de la existencia de Garrick. Y algunos años
atrás finalmente decidió seguir su llamada. Según Garrick,
una obra de arte nunca se terminará y esa es la belleza de la
misma. Las personas lo terminarán en sus mentes y por lo
tanto tendrá un significado diferente para todos.

During his time off, which doesn’t happen a lot lately, Garrick
enjoys catching some waves in St. Joris and he tries to work
out as often as possible. If Garrick should take you on a
trip around Curaçao he would start by going on top of ‘Ser’i
Kokori’. This is a hill in the area of Ronde Klip. Ser’i Kokori is
accessible by car and offers a full circle view of the island.
Next stop would be ‘Kueba di Bika’ in the area of St. Joris.
You have to climb just a little before entering a cave that will
lead you to the top of a hill where you can admire the North
coast of our island. The third stop would be a walk downtown
Punda and Otrobanda, with a focus on the smaller alleys
where you find the real stories. And yes, of course he would
show you his works as well. Please ask the concierge or tour
desk at your accommodation for specific directions to ‘Ser’i
Kokori’ and ‘Kueba di Bika’ if you’re thinking about visiting
these locations.
Today, Garrick has over 30 murals spread all over the island.
His ultimate dream is to travel the world and let people learn
more about Curaçao through his artwork. Garrick hopes
that his artwork will inspire and have a positive impact on
everyone that sees it, especially the younger generation.

Durante su tiempo libre, que no sucede mucho últimamente,
a Garrick le encanta agarrar algunas olas en St. Joris y trata
de hacer ejercicio con la mayor frecuencia posible. Si Garrick
te llevaría de paseo por Curaçao, empezaría por ir a la cima de
‘Ser’i Kokori’. Esta es una colina en el área de Ronde Klip. ‘Ser’i
Kokori’ es accesible en automóvil y ofrece una vista completa
de la isla. La siguiente parada sería ‘Kueba di Bika’ en el área
de St. Joris. Tienes que escalar un poco antes de entrar a una
cueva que te llevará a la cima de una colina, donde se puede

Art can be found in many corners and alleys around the island. Some of our local
artists have made a conscious contribution to our local street art, specifically with
murals. We are highlighting just some of the murals you may encounter while visiting
Downtown Punda and Scharloo. In case you would like to expand your own trip, the
area of Otrobanda also has some great new additions including the Guardian Eyes in
Garrick Marchena’s story.

‘I Am Curaçao’: one of our local hawks, the Partawela,
with a poem written by Hemayel Martina. Hemayel was
a young and talented local artist who passed away
too soon. All his poems were collected in a book titled
Ansestro Preokupá Sosegá (Papiamentu) and Worried
Ancestor Rest in Peace (English).

now, the way of living and the heritage among other things. It takes a lot

Making ‘Pan Será’ (local bread)
Our local bread ‘pan será’ is basically a Sunday tradition as that’s
normally the only day of the week you can buy it. During the
workshop at Museo Kas di Pal’i Maishi you will make, bake and
eat your own ‘pan será’.

On August 18, 2017 the local artist Nena Sanchez, passed
away leaving behind a unique collection of bright and colorful
paintings, a gallery in Punda and her studio and workplace at
Landhuis Jan Kok. At Landhuis Jan Kok she had been secretly
working on an ‘Inspirational Garden’, while being assisted
by two Cuban artists residing on the island. We can only
hope they can complete this project that Nena passionately
initiated but couldn’t finish.
At the age of 18, Nena Sanchez represented Curaçao during
the Miss Universe pageant. She was elected Miss Amity
and this international experience marked the beginning of
25 years living and working abroad. Since her childhood it
was clear that Nena had a special talent, but she was just
not really focused on painting. Finally, in 1994 Nena returned
to Curaçao where she was embraced by the island’s bright
colors, the blue sky, our unique Caribbean flora and fauna and
great atmosphere. The island mix became her daily source of
inspiration, motivating her to start painting again on a regular
basis. Throughout the years she worked on her painting skills,
by experimenting with acrylic on different surfaces. As an
autodidact, Nena’s trademark was defined by her unique style
and the bright colors used in all of her paintings. Whether it’s
a wooden cottage, a Caribbean scenery or her famous ‘Blue
Goddess’ paintings, her artwork became known both locally
and internationally. For Nena painting was a joy, a challenge
and a fulfillment. It was her way of conveying her feelings into
the life of others. As Nena herself used to say: ‘I am a happy
person and I express my happiness through the beautiful
bright colors of my work.’
In an effort to maintain the legacy and Art by Nena Sanchez
alive, Nena’s elder sister Ana is now fully in charge of the
Nena Sanchez art gallery and studio at Landhuis Jan Kok and
the Nena Sanchez gallery in Punda. We invite you to visit one
of her galleries during your stay on the island and learn a little
bit more about our wonderful Queen of Colors. Nena Sanchez
will definitely be remembered as the happy and joyful spirit
she was.

El 18 de Agosto del 2017 la artista local Nena Sánchez
falleció, dejando atrás una colección única de pinturas
coloridas y brillantes, una galería en Punda y su estudio y
lugar de trabajo en Landhuis Jan Kok. En Landhuis Jan Kok
ella estaba trabajando en secreto en un ‘Jardín Inspiracional’
con la ayuda de dos artistas Cubanos que residen en la isla.
Solo podemos esperar que puedan completar este proyecto
que Nena inició apasionadamente pero que no pudo finalizar.
A la edad de 18 años, Nena Sánchez representó a Curaçao
durante el concurso Miss Universo. Fue elegida Miss Amistad
y esta experiencia internacional marcó el comienzo de 25
años de vida y trabajo en el extranjero. Desde su infancia
fue claro que Nena tenía un talento especial, pero ella no
se concentraba realmente en la pintura. Finalmente, en el
1994 Nena regresó a Curaçao, donde fue abrazada por los
colores brillantes de la isla, el cielo azul, nuestra flora y fauna
únicas del Caribe y una gran atmósfera. Esta combinación
se convirtió en una fuente diaria de inspiración, y motivación
para comenzar a pintar de forma más regular. Durante los
años ella trabajó en sus habilidades de pintura mediante la
experimentación con acrílico en diferentes superficies. Como
autodidacta, la marca de Nena se definió por su estilo único y
los colores brillantes utilizados en todas sus pinturas. Ya sea
una cabaña de madera, un paisaje Caribeño o sus famosas
pinturas de la ‘Diosa Azul’, su obra de arte se hizo conocida
tanto a nivel local como internacional. Para Nena, pintar era
una alegría, un desafío y una satisfacción. Era su forma de
transmitir sus sentimientos a la vida de los demás. En las
palabras de la propia Nena: ‘Soy una persona feliz y expreso
mi felicidad a través de los hermosos y brillantes colores
de mi trabajo.’
En un afán por mantener vivo el legado y el Arte de Nena
Sánchez, Ana quien es la hermana mayor de Nena, está
completamente a cargo de la galería de arte y el estudio de
Nena Sánchez en Landhuis Jan Kok y su galería en Punda.

Have you ever visited a place for the first time and felt like
you belonged there all along? Whenever we feel like this
in life, either we make a decision that changes everything
or we ignore the feeling and carry on. Back in 2016 this
happened to Jacqueline while on vacation and she went back
to the Netherlands, packed her bags and made Curaçao her
permanent home. A Cape-Verdean, living in the Netherlands
had now moved to an island in the Caribbean. A vacation had
turned into a staycation, giving her plenty of time to get to
know our island even better and uncovering why she had fell
in love with Curaçao.
Permanently moving to Curaçao after a short visit, is
something that happens regularly to people from all over
the world. The island is a magnet, attracting all types of
people and nationalities. As a multicultural island, our
locals speak multiple languages so you’ll fit right in if you
want to. If you’re looking for a temporary home away from
home, Curaçao has its advantages as well. Not only are we
well located geographically, but we also have direct flight
connections with South-, Central- and North-America, Europe
and the Caribbean. For those that are more independent, the
island has plenty of business and investment opportunities
accompanied by good incentives. If you are considering the
move, you should start connecting with the right organizations
and getting to know some locals that will be able to assist you
in the near future. At the end of the day, we are a small island

famous quotes about travel and it is completely true. As humans we are constantly
looking for things and moments to set our souls on fire. Not to brag, but Curaçao
can offer you plenty of those moments, activities and experiences. It’s just a matter
of connecting with the right people and asking the right questions.
At 372 meters, the Christoffel Mountain is the highest peak in Curaçao. Normally
it is only allowed to climb the mountain during the early morning hours and you
need to be in good shape to do this. It is not an easy task, but completely worth it
once you are at the top. We had the unique opportunity to see the sunset on top of
the mountain and because words cannot easily describe this experience we will let
the image tell its own tale. In case you’ve climbed the mountain before, you should
know that the top leads to different paths and each with a completely different view
of the island.

es una de las citas más famosas sobre viajes y es completamente cierta. Como
humanos, estamos constantemente buscando cosas y momentos para prender
fuego a nuestras almas. No para presumir, pero Curaçao puede ofrecerte muchos de
esos momentos, actividades y experiencias. Es solamente cuestión de conectarse
con la gente correcta y hacer las preguntas correctas.
A 372 metros, la Montaña Christoffel es el pico más alto de Curaçao. Normalmente,
solo se permite escalar la montaña durante las primeras horas de la mañana y
necesitas estar en buena condición física para esta escalada. No es una tarea fácil,
pero vale la pena una vez que estás en la cima. Tuvimos la oportunidad única de ver la

Every once in a while we randomly meet new people and
somehow it feels just right. This may well be the case for
those who have already met Liberty Suares or are supposed
to meet this Island Girl during their stay in Curaçao. Born and
raised here on the island, she migrated to the Netherlands
after finishing high school to pursue a study in Engineering.
Somewhere around 2013 during her time in college, Liberty
started practicing yoga with short five minute sessions at
home. Silly moves, quickly became an understanding of her
body, her thoughts and all the connections in and around our
lives.
Fast forward to present time, Liberty is an official yoga
teacher and the proud owner of Dushi Sup, Liberty Yoga and
Number Ten Café together with her boyfriend Donovan. This
young and dynamic couple is living proof that you should
follow your passion and by doing so you will achieve anything
and everything you want in this life. Number Ten is a dream
come true for both Liberty and Donovan, who is also known
as the Island Barista. They get to share their passion for
coffee, mindful eating and also baked goods with each other
and the rest of us now. Additionally, the fact that Liberty was
able to open her own Yoga studio in the same building as
Number Ten, makes this whole journey more exciting and
special for them.

Chica de la Isla. De vez en cuando conocemos al azar a
nuevas personas y de alguna manera se siente bien. Este
puede ser el caso para todos los que ya conocieron a Liberty
Suares o para quienes aún tienen que encontrarse con esta
Chica de la Isla durante su estadía en Curaçao. Nacida y
criada aquí en la isla, ella emigró a Holanda después de
terminar la escuela secundaria para seguir un estudio en
Ingeniería. En el 2013 durante su tiempo en la universidad,
Liberty comenzó a practicar yoga con sesiones cortas de
cinco minutos en su casa. Movimientos tontos, rápidamente
se convirtieron en una comprensión de su propio cuerpo
para Liberty, sus pensamientos y todas las conexiones en y
alrededor de nuestras vidas.

in the kitchen, exploring the island or (un)consciously inspiring others
to follow their dreams. This Island Girl is defining her own style as
she goes and is constantly exploring new ways to unlock her journey
in Curaçao and in this life. Liberty is definitely just scratching the
surface, but she is completely ready for all the good coming her way.

To me, solo travelling means absolute freedom!
Doing whatever I want, whenever I want without having to
compromise with anyone else while exploring a new country,
feels absolutely liberating. Don’t get me wrong, I love to travel
with friends and family from time to time but there is nothing
compared to the indescribable feeling I get when I’m leaving
on a solo adventure.
Nevertheless, with that kind of freedom comes responsibility.
You’re basically on your own, depending on your instincts
and relying on the kindness of humanity. There is no one else
close enough to blame for the stupid mistakes you might
make or to celebrate memorable moments with, besides you.
Oh yes, you are stuck with YOU all the time and there is no
more suitable moment to get to know who you truly are, what
you’re capable of and where you set your boundaries. In my
humble opinion, that’s the beauty of it all.

I am truly blessed to be born on this beautiful little Island
called Curaçao where diversity, bravery and tolerance are
outcomes of our cultural heritage. We speak a minimum of
4 languages, which makes us able to communicate beyond
borders and gives us a wide perspective on the world.
Curaçao is the perfect location to choose for your (first) solo
trip under the sun. We are used to see tourists wandering
around the city alone and we will not hesitate to help you
reach your destination when you ask for it. We are proud of
our island and we love to make people feel welcome. As in

Básicamente estás solo, dependiendo de tus instintos y

We are fortunate enough to be living in an era where we can
connect with others easily and find a lot of valuable and
accurate information through websites, Facebook, travel
blogs and videos. My advice to you, as a fellow solo traveler,
is to plan your trip wisely by doing your research and rent a
car to drive around. The island may seem small but there is
definitely a lot to discover.
Thanks to our sunny weather and clear waters we always get
our daily doses of sunshine and vitamin D. This means that
we always feel good; therefore we will treat you even better.

1. Always start your dive going against the
stream and come back with the stream.
2. Maintain physical and eye contact during the
entire dive, the buddy system.
3. Do not combine (scuba) diving with alcohol or
other substances.

Traveling for the sole purpose of experiencing specific
cuisines in a city or a destination is becoming a more
popular way of travel. Food has always been an important
part of travel, but almost never the main reason. Nowadays
we are seeing a shift in this aspect, as foodies around the
world are actively seeking for new culinary experiences. By
combining travel with their love for food and sharing this
with the rest of the world, we are seeing a new type of travel.
Social media, review sites and just an online presence are key
components in the growth of such way of travel. Foodies do
plenty of research and are well prepared before visiting a new
destination and its culinary offerings.
As with everything you have different types of Foodies and
Guido Rojer Jr. is hands down at one of the highest levels of
culinary travels. His eyes sparkle when he’s sharing his food
travels and adventures and he’s constantly discovering new
places and dishes. Just recently he booked a one-day trip to
San Francisco while in the US, for the sole purpose of visiting
and of course eating at the fish market. Guido’s mission on
this planet is to ‘reinvent the normal’ and he has a profound
love for our island. He really believes in doing everything
within his power to help Curaçao grow and keep moving
forward. Guido loves to travel and he is definitely passionate
about food.
For this story we challenged Guido to provide us with a small
list of culinary recommendations for visitors in Curaçao and
he was allowed to select the categories or cuisine types. He
managed to come up with a list, but rest assure it wasn’t an
easy task to narrow it down for us. We’re sharing 4 of his
recommendations.

The Old Market ‘Marshe Bieu’ in downtown Punda is one
of the places to find great local food, and also meet locals
while sharing a table during lunch. The market hosts several
kitchens including one owned by Zus di Plaza. At a young
age she started helping her mother out in the kitchen and
50+ years later she is still cooking and now passing the
knowledge over to her own daughter who is helping her run
their famous kitchen in the market.
If you enter ‘Plaza Bieu’ from the Post Office entrance, Zus is
the last kitchen at the other end. The menu varies every day,
so you will have different options depending on the day of
the week. Except for Sundays when the market is closed. The
arepa di pampuna, pumpkin pancakes or pumpkin fritters
are served as a breakfast item, dessert or simply as a snack.
There’s only one serving size (Large) and if you are planning
to also enjoy a ‘krioyo’ meal at Zus di Plaza, we recommend
sharing the arepa di pampuna as an appetizer or dessert.
They can also wrap it up for you as a take-out order.

El Mercado Viejo ‘Marshe Bieu’ en el centro de Punda es
uno de los lugares para encontrar buena comida local,
y también conocer a los lugareños mientras comparten
una mesa durante el almuerzo. El mercado alberga varias
cocinas, incluyendo la cocina de Zus di Plaza. A temprana
edad ella comenzó a ayudar a su madre en la cocina y 50+
años después todavía está cocinando y ahora pasándole
el conocimiento a su propia hija que la está ayudando a
administrar su famosa cocina en el mercado.
Si ingresas a ‘Plaza Bieu’ desde la entrada de la Oficina de
Correos, Zus es la última cocina en el otro extremo. El menú

Sushi.
You may be thinking, Why sushi? Curaçao is
a multicultural island and even the cuisines
reflect this fact.
We have almost every possible cuisine type on the
island and sushi and the Japanese cuisine is also
part of the options. The tempura rolls are really
popular on the island and also the ‘krioyo’ rolls.
Local ingredients are used to create specific sushi
rolls that are directly linked with the island. Guido
highly recommends Kyoto Sushi & Grill located
at Jan Thiel, when craving sushi. The menu has
a wide variety of sushi rolls and nigiri, the latter
being Guido’s menu item of preference. Aside
from sushi Kyoto also has a complete Teppan Yaki
menu and a selection of main course dishes.
#2 SUSHI
Puede que estés pensando ¿Por qué sushi?
Curaçao es una isla multicultural y hasta el
aspecto culinario lo refleja. Tenemos casi todos
los tipos de cocinas posibles y sushi y la cocina
japonesa también forman parte de las opciones.
Los rollos de tempura son muy populares en
la isla y también los rollos ‘krioyo’. Ingredientes
locales son usados para crear rollos de sushi
específicos que están directamente conectado
con la isla. Guido recomienda encarecidamente a
Kyoto Sushi & Grill ubicado en Jan Thiel, cuando
estás anhelando sushi. El menú tiene una amplia
variedad de rollos de sushi y nigiri, este último es
el preferido de Guido. Además del sushi, Kyoto
también tiene un menú completo de Teppan Yaki

Food truck.
You may have heard about or famous food trucks
called ‘Trùk’i Pan’, literally translated it would be
bread truck.
You can find these trucks all over the island in
all shapes and sizes. The official opening hour
is 9.00PM and they go all the way into the early
morning hours depending on the amount of orders
per night. Most trucks serve different types of meat
that can be ordered plain, with bread or fries. Every
food truck has its own specialty and a selection of
unique sauces to complete your order.
BBQ Express is famous for its good food, fast
service and as a bonus their awesome location.
Situated on the Caracasbaaiweg, they’ve
transformed an empty lot into a sort of ‘drive-in’
food truck experience. You should order a mix
platter combining two types of meat to make
your meal more interesting. BBQ Express is also
the first food truck on the island that introduced
biodegradable materials and focusing on recycling
which gives it an extra bonus point.
#3 COMIDA CALLEJERA
Es posible que hayas oído hablar de nuestros
famosos camiones que sirven comida callejera
llamados ‘Trùk’i Pan’, literalmente traducido sería
camión de pan. Puedes encontrar estos camiones
por toda la isla en diferentes formas y tamaños.
La hora oficial de abrir es a las 9:00 PM, hasta la
madrugada dependiendo de la cantidad de pedidos
cada noche. La mayoría de los camiones sirven
diferentes tipos de carne que se pueden pedir sin
acompañamiento, con pan o papas fritas. Cada
camión de comida tiene su propio especialidad y
una selección de salsas únicas para completar tu
pedido.
BBQ Express es famoso por su buena comida,
servicio rápido y como extra su increíble ubicación.
Ubicados en el Caracasbaaiweg, transformaron
un lote vacío en una especie de camión de
comida “drive-in”. Deberías ordenar un plato
mixto, combinando dos tipos de carne para hacer
to comida más interesante. BBQ Express es
también el primer camión de comida en la isla que
introdujo materiales biodegradables y se centra en
el reciclaje, lo que le da un punto de bonificación
adicional.
Krioyo is the term we use for our local cuisine and
in this case it means fresh fried fish, whole fish or
fillet, served with fried plantain and a fresh salad.
As a side you may often choose from items such
as white rice, french fries, funchi (polenta), tutu
(black-eyed pea mush), or a combination. As our
‘krioyo’ sauce is so important to complete your
meal, it is served separately per table. Don’t feel
embarrassed if you can’t stop pouring more sauce
on your plate. To complete the experience you
should order an ‘Awa di Lamunchi’, fresh lemonade,
to accompany your meal.
Kas di Piskadó Purunchi is Guido’s recommendation
when it comes to eating fresh fish. A former
fisherman’s house has been transformed into this
unique open-air/on the water restaurant, where
you walk through the kitchen before getting to
your table. The owner, Gina, will greet you with a
huge smile while sharing the menu for the day. If
you are not staying for long on the island you may
want to order the mix platter and enjoy different
types of fish in smaller portions. Otherwise, try
the red snapper, the purunchi, the dradu, mula…
Everything! Reservations are recommended as the
place is small and cozy, but completely worth it.
#4 PESCADO
Nuestra isla tiene muchos excelentes restaurantes
que sirven pescado fresco estilo ‘krioyo’. Krioyo es
el término que usamos para nuestra cocina local y
en este caso significa pescado frito, entero o filete,
servido con plátano frito y una ensalada fresca.
Cómo acompañamiento, puedes elegir entre
elementos como arroz blanco, papas fritas, funchi
(polenta), tutu (papilla de guisante ojos negros),
o una combinación. Como nuestra salsa ‘krioyo’
es tan importante para completar tu comida, se
sirve por separado en cada mesa. No te sientes
avergonzado si pones demasiado salsa en tu
plato. Para completar la experiencia, debes de
ordenar un ‘Awa di Lamunchi’, limonada fresca.
Kas di Piskadó Purunchi es la recomendación de
Guido cuando se trata de comer pescado fresco.
La antigua casa de pescador se ha transformado
en este exclusivo restaurante al aire libre/sobre el
agua, donde vas a pasar por la cocina antes de
llegar a tu mesa. La propietaria, Gina, te recibirá
con una gran sonrisa mientras comparte el menú
del día. Si tu estadia aqui en la isla es de corto
plazo puedes pedir el plato mixto y disfrutar de
diferentes tipos de pescado en porciones más
pequeñas. De lo contrario, visitá a Purunchi
algunas veces i prueba el pargo rojo, el purunchi,
el dradu, mula ... ¡Todo! Se recomienda hacer una
reservación ya que el lugar es pequeño y acogedor,
pero vale la pena.

Every Sunday the market hall in Barber, also known as ‘Marshe di
Barber’, transforms into a full on foodcourt combined with stations
where locals sell plants, different handmade items, antiques and
sweets. As early as 6.30AM you can already order some local soup,
‘pan será’ which is our local bread baked in outside ovens, or a
complete krioyo meal. Usually the market closes somewhere between
1.00PM and 2.00PM depending on the amount of visitors left.
For us as locals and especially for those living in Banda Bou, visiting
the market on Sundays is a good time to catch up with family and
friends while enjoying a delicious meal or a local soup. For those with
a sweet tooth, there are also plenty of local sweets and fresh juices
available. We highly recommend you to show up hungry and with cash,
because you’ll want to try different items on the menus and they don’t
accept cards.

You may have realized by now that diversity can be found in
everything on the island. This also includes our Nightlife. A
night out in Curaçao will be defined by your preferences, the
purpose of your trip and the type of traveler you are.
The number one rule for anyone seeking to explore and
experience our island’s nightlife, is renting a car. Keep in mind
that we recommend making proper taxi arrangements if you
are planning on going all out. Curaçao’s nightlife scenery is
concentrated in specific areas around the island, such as Jan
Thiel, Mambo Beach BLVD, Saliña and the Renaissance Riffort
Village. All these locations offer different dining possibilities,
making it easy to combine dinner with live entertainment and
a night out. Fridays and Saturdays are the the most common
days to go out for us locals, but every day of the week has its
own charm depending on what you are interested in.
Mondays are usually more relaxed and we recommend having
a nice dinner and grabbing a drink afterwards. On Tuesdays
and Thursdays you can dance the night away at Omundo,
located at the Zuikertuin Mall. Around 9.00PM the restaurant
starts to transform into a nice air conditioned nightclub, as
the band starts playing. People usually stay after dinner or
arrive after nine.
Jazz and Blues fans are welcome at Avila Hotel’s Blues Bar
& Restaurant every Thursday evening, where our local Jazz
legends or invited guests are in charge with the music.
On Friday evenings the Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort hosts
a great happy hour combined with live entertainment and
an open air dance floor. You can have dinner at one of the
restaurants at the Rif Fort. For cocktails and drinks we
recommend DooShee Bar also at the Rif Fort and if you are
feeling really lucky, the Carnaval Casino is right around the
corner at the Renaissance Hotel.
Should Thursday, Friday or Saturday night arrive and you
haven’t made plans yet, you can start by visiting Sauc’é in
Saliña. Curaçao’s first shots bar is an unique way to kick off
the night out and try some local flavors. These are just some
recommendations, but the island has enough possibilities for
a night out. Ask around if you want to experience something
specific or you want to be around a specific crowd. The island
will not disappoint you, because we have most definitely have
it all.

& Restaurant del Avila Hotel todos los jueves por la noche,

Los viernes por la noche, Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort

Organizer
“Music has always played an important role in my life.”
Born in the Netherlands, Alain Voigt, moved to Curaçao with
his family when he was just 13 years old. At a young age he
started deejaying at beach parties and after a while he added
Party Organizer and Event Organizer to his resume. Back in the
days Mambo Beach BLVD was just Mambo Beach. The beach
turned into a party venue after sunset and the combination
of Mambo Beach and Wet & Wild was a perfect night out.
Alain was one of the known DJ’s at Wet & Wild and he simply
enjoyed making music and ensure a great entertainment.

Nacido en Holanda, Alain Voigt, se mudó a Curaçao con su
familia cuando tenía solo 13 años. A una edad temprana
comenzó con su carrera de DJ en fiestas playeras y después
de un tiempo agregó Organizador de Fiestas y Eventos a su
currículum. Más de una decada atras Mambo Beach BLVD
era solo Mambo Beach. Después del atardecer, la playa se
transformaba en un lugar de fiesta y la combinación de
Mambo Beach y Wet & Wild brindaba una noche perfecta.
Alain era uno de los DJs conocidos en Wet & Wild y
simplemente disfrutaba hacer música y encargarse de un
buen entretenimiento.

It was back in 2002 where Alain’s interest for organizing
parties grew and parties quickly became music events and
festivals. Curaçao has plenty of great events year round and
together with his team, Alain is responsible for quite a few
events. Alain’s company Face Events focuses on organizing
events, parties and festivals of high quality, with a great
experience and the best entertainment possible. A couple of
years ago Face Events officially took over the Amnesia Music
Festival which can be considered one of the largest music
festivals on the island. Every year the line-up is hand picked
and tailored to entertain over 2.000 attendees. When asked
what his ultimate event would look like if money nor time
were an issue, Alain would organize a multiple day festival
combining at least Latin and EDM/Dance. Artists and DJ’s
like J. Balvin, Marc Anthony, Daddy Yankee, Armin van Buuren,
Hardwell, Calvin Harris and Martin Garrix would be just part
of the lineup for this Ultimate Event. For now Alain will keep
doing what he does best, which is providing the island with
the best of the best in Music Festivals and Events . And when
he’s not doing that, he’s traveling, enjoying life with his friends
and spending time behind his DJ booth.

creció y las fiestas se convirtieron rápidamente en eventos
musicales y festivales. Curaçao tiene muchos grandes
eventos durante todo el año y, junto con su equipo, Alain es
responsable de varios eventos. La compañía de Alain, Face
Events, se concentra en la organización de eventos, fiestas y
festivales de alta calidad, con una gran experiencia y el mejor
entretenimiento posible. Hace un par de años, Face Events
se hizo cargo oficialmente del Amnesia Music Festival,

Westpunt is the last neighborhood on our island’s West side
stretching over the coastline. It is also one of the largest
fisherman’s communities on the island and the local men
have been fishing for a living their entire lives. Even though
it may seem easy, these men are putting their lives at risk
every time they leave to sea. Departing early mornings with
their boat to bring in their catch for the day, that will be sold
immediately at the wharf. For decades, knowledge and skills
have been passed on from generation to generation and it
is and admirable set of skills each of these men is carrying
with him. Because of the area’s natural resources, our rich
cultural heritage and traditions, Westpunt is also known for
its agriculture and stockbreeding. And of course for the area’s
beautiful sceneries and crystal clear waters. .
Fishing has a direct economical and social impact on the
neighborhood, but additionally also on our island’s economy.
When you connect all the dots together, it becomes clear that
fishing plays an important role in our island’s development
and also the visitor’s experience for that matter.
At the Fisherman’s Wharf in Westpunt, called Playa Piskadó,
you can buy fresh fish on a daily basis. The local fishermen
will clean and cut your fish upon request and everything
happens right then and there on the beach. The natural ‘fish
waste’ that remains after cleaning, is thrown back into the
water becoming food for other sea animals. Every Sunday
you can also enjoy a delicious lunch at the famous eatery
‘Sabor di Playa’, owned by Roy Gouverneur. Roy buys his fish
directly from his neighbors at the Wharf, so his menu depends
on their catch for that day. If you’d like to know more about
Westpunt, it’s history and traditions, you should definitely talk
to Mr. Roy.
We’re currently als seeing a newer generation of Westpunt
fisherman. These young men have taken over skills and
knowledge from their ancestors and other local fishermen.
They truly enjoy their craft and are passionate about it.

Westpunt es el último vecindario en el lado oeste de
nuestra isla, extendiéndose sobre la costa. También es
una de las comunidades pesqueras más grandes de la isla
y los hombres locales han estado pescando durante toda su
vida. Aunque pueda parecer fácil, estos hombres arriesgan
sus vidas cada vez que salen al mar. Saliendo temprano por
la mañana con su bote para traer sus capturas del día, que
se venderán inmediatamente en el muelle. Durante décadas,
el conocimiento y las habilidades se han transmitido de
generación a generación y es un conjunto admirable de
habilidades que cada uno de estos hombres lleva consigo.
Debido a los recursos naturales de la zona, nuestra rica
herencia cultural y tradiciones, Westpunt también es
conocida por su agricultura y ganadería. Y, por supuesto, para
los hermosos paisajes de la zona y las aguas cristalinas.
La pesca tiene un impacto económico y social directo en el
vecindario, pero también en la economía de nuestra isla. Al
conectar todos los puntos, queda claro que la pesca juega un
papel importante en el desarrollo de nuestra isla y también en
la experiencia del visitante.
En el muelle de pescadores en Westpunt, llamado Playa
Piskadó, puedes comprar pescado fresco todos los días.
Los pescadores locales limpian y cortan tus pescados a
petición y todo sucede en ese momento y en la playa. El
‘desecho natural de pescado’ que queda después de la
limpieza es devuelto al agua y se convierte en alimento
para otros animales marinos. Todos los domingos puedes
disfrutar de un delicioso almuerzo en el famoso restaurante
‘Sabor di Playa’ de Roy Gouverneur. Roy compra su pescado
directamente de sus vecinos en el muelle, por lo que su
menú depende de la captura de los pescadores en ese día. Si

Actualmente estamos viendo una nueva generación de
pescadores de Westpunt. Estos jóvenes se han apoderado

Sea Turtle Spotting
For years sea turtles have been cohabiting at Playa Piskadó, even so
that the area has some regular turtles that can be recognized because
of specific characteristics. Nowadays Playa Piskadó, or Turtle Beach
as some call it, is a very popular location for swimming, snorkeling
and diving. The vast majority will go for a snorkel while trying to spot
the turtles underwater, but you can also stand on the pier and catch a
glimpse from above. These beautiful creatures are protected animals
and it is not allowed to touch them. The Sea Turtle Conservation and its
volunteers placed signs at the beach, introducing the regular sea turtles
and explaining the importance of helping us protect these endangered
species.
If you decide to go for a snorkel or swim at Playa Piskadó, or just pay a
visit to the Fisherman’s Wharf, we encourage you to first take some time
and read the Sea Turtle Conservation signs at the beach. We can only
hope it will provide you with new knowledge, understanding and respect
for our island, our people, our animals and our natural resources.

Observación de tortugas marinas
Durante años, las tortugas marinas han estado cohabitando en Playa
Piskadó, tanto así que el área tiene algunas tortugas regulares que
pueden ser reconocidas debido a sus características específicas. Hoy
en día Playa Piskadó, o Turtle Beach como algunos lo llaman, es un lugar
muy popular para nadar, esnórquel y bucear. La gran mayoría irá por un
esnórquel mientras tratan de ver a las tortugas debajo del agua, pero
también puedes pararte en el muelle y echar un vistazo desde arriba.
Estas hermosas criaturas son animales protegidos y no está permitido
tocarlos. La Conservación de Tortugas Marinas y sus voluntarios
colocaron letreros en la playa, presentando las tortugas marinas del área
y explicando la importancia de ayudarnos a proteger a estas especies en
peligro de extinción.
