My First Time Working a “Real” Job 14

EDITOR’S NOTE
A WHOLE
NEW UNIVERSE
Hello, hello!
After months of planning and keeping it under wraps, we can finally share our newly
created “Crunch” universe!
A little story about how this came about…
When we first started “Crunch”, the idea was very simple and straightforward.
We wanted to create interesting content to share with our clients and community
members. But as “Crunch” continued to evolve, and we received lots of feedback, we
realised that our community members are complete superstars for being so supportive
of this entire platform.
That was when we knew for certain that “Crunch” should belong to our community
as much as it belongs to us. We wanted to create a place where content creators of
different backgrounds and talents can share their work. We wanted to build a universe
where creative minds can reach a much wider audience.
So here we are today, to open our doors to this entire online universe we have created
just for you. “Crunch” is now yours to have, and we want you to have as much fun as we
are having being a part of this.
Before I end this note, I would just like to personally thank each and every one of you
who believed in us right from the start, and those of you who have contributed content
to us. There can never be any words I can form to express the gratitude and warmth
and fuzziness I feel from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you and we hope you enjoy this new issue and platform of “Crunch”!
Just to give you a little insider’s tip, we have got so many more community movements
and activities that you can participate in, so please subscribe to our mailing list and
follow us on Instagram @crunchbynuffnang to stay updated!
Love,
your Editor-In-Chief,
AYUNI HARIS
HITS THE SILVER SCREEN FOR
THE FIRST TIME!
1. HI, AYUNI! FIRST OF ALL, DO TELL US A
LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
My full name is Nurul Ayuni Asyiqin Bt Haris.
I am 24 years old and I am currently pursuing
a Bachelor in Performing Arts (drama) at
University of Malaya. I’m the third child out of
six children in my family. I’m from Kota Bharu,
Kelantan. I am also a freelance model, social
media influencer and actress.
2. CAN YOU SHARE 3 FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF
THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT?
• I obsessed with the colour pink.
• I’m scared of cats.
• I’m a clingy person.
3. WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE A FILM STUDENT.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAJOR IN THIS
FIELD?
My dad because he is both a really good
multitasker and a radio announcer. I really
want to be like him one day.
This feature is brought to you by our
Nuffnang talent Ayuni Haris

4. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR
DEBUT IN ENJIN NO. 9. CAN YOU
TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS
FILM?
It is a heartwarming family movie
that touches on topics like the
love between a grandfather and
his grandson. It is full of joy, and
also full of humour. Basically,
it is about a family in Negeri
Sembilan. You have to watch it to
find out more. ;)
5. HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE
SHOOTING A MOVIE FOR THE
FIRST TIME?
I was really excited but also very
scared! I was so nervous when it
first played on screen in front of
the audience who came to watch
the premiere! But I was also very
happy because I knew that I gave
my best effort throughout the
whole process of shooting the
movie.
6. HOW DID IT FEEL WATCHING
YOURSELF ON THE BIG SCREEN
FOR THE FIRST TIME?
It was slightly awkward, and I
couldn’t help but to smile and
blush because deep down, I am a
very shy person.
7. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK
ALONGSIDE SO MANY OTHER
TALENTED ACTORS AND
ACTRESSES?
It was an amazing experience
because they were so helpful and
shared a lot of knowledge and
their experiences of being in the
film industry.
6

8. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR
ASPIRING YOUNG ACTORS
AND ACTRESSES TRYING TO
SUCCEED IN THIS FIELD?
• Being disciplined in whatever
you do because it is the key
to becoming a successful
actor and actress. Also, it is
very important to not forget
to respect your seniors and
always remember who you
are.
• My principle in life is to push
yourself to always do better
and not stay complacent. I
stand strong by the Malay
proverb, “paksa diri bukan
manjakan diri”.
9. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR
BIGGEST GOAL AS AN ACTRESS?
• To continue starring in more
films.
• To do my best in the
upcoming telemovie with
Bront Palare and Nabila Huda
in “Toyol”. I’m really excited
about this because this will
be my first telemovie on HBO
channel.
• I really want to act in a
superhero movie like the
movie series “The Avengers”.
• I also dream about acting with
my favourite actor of all time,
Hindi movie star Shah Rukh
Khan.
Ayuni is one of our newly joined
Nuffnang superstars. If you
would like to work with her on
your branded campaigns, write to
adminmy@nuffnang.com and we
will be happy to help!
TREND REPORT
CREATING CONTENT THAT
CAPTURES FROM
THE GET-GO
EVERYTHING STARTS WHEN WE ARE BORN
Human beings are drawn towards visual elements by nature. And this all starts the
moment we are born. Newborn babies, although their visual structure is still poorly
developed, can detect changes in brightness, distinguish between stationary and
active objects, as well as follow moving objects in their visual fields.
As babies, our brains develop a particular visual with meaning, a meaning a newborn
can’t fully understand, but they do know that there is meaning behind it. That explains
why regardless of how young a baby is, they would still be able to turn to find their
mothers when they need them.
Isn’t it amazing how we associate visuals with meaning, even at such an early age?
TODAY
Fast forward to the world we live in today, we are still very much captivated by visual
elements. As a matter of fact, through generations of technological advancement
and uprise of the internet, human beings have learned to adapt and react; now the
use of visualised information serves as a driving factor for many businesses and
corporations.
Well, we are still the visual creatures human beings were born to be.
Visual processing is what our brains are made for. Despite having 5 senses, 70% of
sensory comes from our eyes.
Hence, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to know that visuals are powerful and easy to
understand, especially when compared to mere text. Well, people have always said
that pictures speak a thousand words.
Research proves that people tend to recall 20% of what they read, and 80% of what
they see (visually) and do (meaning). When a photo is seen and has meaning attached
to it, it is very likely that those who saw it are able to recall it afterwards.
VISUALISING SOCIAL MEDIA
What can I say, people do love looking at visuals. With social media today –
Instagram, Facebook and Youtube - that focus on static visuals and moving visuals,
we are constantly bombarded by visual after visual everyday.
It is the moment we associate a visual with meaning is when it becomes a memory in
our brains. So having said that, what could be the first thing that pops up in your mind
when you first see a photo?
Is it a particular object?
• The dress she’s wearing, the object on the
table, the watch he wore, etc.
Is it a colour that stands out?
• Red that represents danger, blue for
warmth, etc.
Is it a photo as a whole?
• A happy family, a busy street, an empty hotel
room, etc.
Is it the emotion or sensation you feel?
• Joy, anger, pride, sadness, etc.
It could even be the memories or
experience of one’s self that come
to mind?
• A past relationship, a family trip to
Bali, etc.
12

Isaiah Saw
FEW IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:
1. Colours capture attention, whether it is the
red warning sign, or a translucent blue sky.
2. Movements also capture attention.
3. The brain has its way of recognising faces,
like a newborn towards their mother.
4. The brain loves simplicity.
5. Our brains are suckers for emotions,
especially when it comes to connecting
with personal stories.
As human beings, we come across an
uncountable number of visuals a day. Heck, we
are most probably already numb to a lot of it.
Some we glance at and forget, and some we
attach meaning to. Meaning, is where a particular
visual relates back to you to create a lasting
impression.
So if you are looking to create content that
stands out from the millions of other content out
there, you need to explore what captures people’s
attentions from the get-go.
This article is brought to you by our former
Senior Advertising Operations Executive, Pi Yin,
who has left Nuffnang to further pursue her
career goals. Thank you so much for all your
contributions to Nuffnang, and your persistent
support in “Crunch”! We wish you all the best in
all your future endeavours!
#MYFirstTime SPECIAL
MY FIRST TIME
WORKING A “REAL” JOB
Do you remember your first job? Daunting, wasn’t it? Fresh out of college with next to
no work experience under your belt- aside from your internship and maybe retail work.
Just how does one go about surviving the “real” world? Are there certain rules we have
to follow? With a million and one questions swirling around in your mind, it’s easy to
feel overwhelmed!
Now, working at your first job isn’t a breeze, but here are a couple of things I’ve taken
away from my first job experience that will hopefully help you with yours.
14

STAY ORGANISED AND NEVER MISS A DEADLINE
This is obvious, but you’d be surprised by how
often people mess this up. Bear in mind that
you’re not in college anymore. While it was
perfectly acceptable to miss a day or two of class
without notice, doing the same at work is just
about unforgivable. The same goes for deadlines.
You’re allowed to extend your deadlines in
college, and you may be able to do that at the
later stages of work. Certainly not at the initial
stages, however.
You’re not in college anymore. The stakes are
higher at work.
Leanne Saw
UP YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS
One of the most undervalued yet one of the most
sought-after skills is the ability to communicate.
Soft skills are incredibly valuable in the eyes of
employers; so much so that the lack of them
can be a deal-breaker in procuring a job. So it is
important to remember to keep them sharp as
well. Don’t neglect them in favour of academics
and learning how to do your job- and this is, trust
me, all too easy to do.
Never underestimate the power of good
communication skills.
STAY GROUNDED AND REMEMBER YOU’RE
STILL A NEWBIE
It’s easy to get carried away when you are at
the initial stages of your first job. Resentment
for having to do “menial” tasks at the beginning
is all too common, but the moment you start
feeling anything akin to this, stop. Remember that
although you studied in college for years, you still
have a lot to learn- and the (unattractive) start of
your career is part of the package.
It is at this point that it’s more important to show
off your work ethic rather than your knowledge.
Only once you’ve gained the trust of your
employer will you eventually gain more and more
responsibilities. Don’t be impatient; learn to work
your way up!
PAY ATTENTION TO COMPANY CULTURE
Fitting in is important, especially when hundreds
or thousands of people want your job. Which
is why it is crucial to take note of the culture of
the company you’re in. While this doesn’t mean
you have to go out of your way to change your
personality, you should at least make a bit of an
effort to fit in. Introducing yourself at the office
and of course, getting to know your colleagues is
a good start. By doing so, you will not only build
bonds, you will also learn more things about the
company- and that will only make you look good.
And honest to goodness, don’t participate in
gossip.
15

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS
Just like when you were in college, you
shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions at
work. After all, your colleagues would rather
you ask as opposed to having you make
mistakes. That said, while you’re allowed to
make mistakes, there is still a limit. The rule
of thumb is not to make the mistake again.
Everyone remembers their first few weeks
at work, so they will go easy on you at first.
Just don’t take this readily laid-out kindness
for granted.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF
SKILL ACQUISITION
It’s extremely easy to get a bit too
comfortable at work. Now, no matter
how tempting it is, you shouldn’t fall prey
to the tempting lure of stability. In this
increasingly competitive job market, your
value as an employee decreases every day
you remain complacent.
Which makes it all the more essential for
you to keep learning. Strive not only to learn
more things at work; do it outside of work
as well. You’d be surprised by how much
this will help you in the long run. Sooner or
later, you’ll find that companies will look for
you, as opposed to the other way around.
How great is that? Aim to be the type of
employee that employers would rush over
to hire.
