THE MELBOURNE Rebels<br />
may have lost their way since<br />
Will Genia was injured, but<br />
with his return they can look<br />
forward to their clash against the<br />
Crusaders tomorrow night with<br />
more optimism than their recent<br />
record might entitle them to.<br />
Since Genia has been out with<br />
a hamstring injury, the Rebels<br />
have lost both their Super Rugby<br />
games in South Africa to the<br />
Bulls and Stormers.<br />
So while coach Dave Wessels<br />
is never one to attribute either<br />
victory or defeat to a single<br />
player, he is certainly pleased to<br />
have his little general back and<br />
available for selection, reported<br />
<strong>The</strong> Australian.<br />
“I think Will is a very special<br />
player,” Wessels said when asked<br />
if the team regards Genia as their<br />
talisman.<br />
“Not only from a performance<br />
point of view, but also for the<br />
experience and leadership he<br />
brings to our team.”<br />
<strong>The</strong> Rebels boast so many<br />
Wallabies that it is strange to<br />
think they rely so heavily on<br />
Genia.<br />
But Wessels was unexpectedly<br />
brought face-to-face with the<br />
inexperience of his side at a team<br />
meeting in South Africa when<br />
he asked for a show of hands of<br />
all the players who had been on<br />
a Super Rugby campaign in the<br />
republic before. Less than half of<br />
the squad had.<br />
While his brother Ross will<br />
be held out of the match after<br />
being concussed in consecutive<br />
matches, the Rebels’ Dane<br />
Haylett-Petty is due back<br />
from his own head injury<br />
concerns this week, while the<br />
man who was supposed to<br />
replace him at fullback against<br />
the Stormers only to suffer<br />
a rolled ankle in training,<br />
Jack Maddocks, is likely to be<br />
available for selection.<br />
With the trans-Tasman<br />
scorecard now standing at New<br />
Zealand 36, Australia 0, there<br />
is little expectation of a Rebels<br />
victory over the competition<br />
