MMA results
Christchurch MMA fighters
finished with mixed results
in the Xtreme Fighting
Championship at the Edgar
Centre, Dunedin, on Friday
night. In the welterweight main
event, Christchurch’s Cheyne
Turahui, Universal Vale Tudo,
took his undefeated record to
two wins when he knocked out
Papamoa’s Paul McMah, East
Coast BJJ. Dunedin welterweight
Tommy Leoni, Hammerhead,
picked up his first MMA win in
three fights when he submitted
Christchurch’s Dan Reveley,
Universal Vale Tudo, via a round
two standing guillotine choke.
After the fight, it was revealed
Reveley had fought on with a
broken arm after round one.
Avery sets best time
Avon long-distance runner
Cameron Avery has set a new
personal best time for the
10,000m. The 20-year-old ran
29min 44.84sec at a meet in
Philadelphia at the weekend.
Brown piles on points
Former Hornby Panther
Fa’amanu Brown has pushed his
case for a NRL call-up following
a 22-point haul in the New
South Wales Cup. The 23-yearold
dummy-half scored two tries
and slotted seven conversions for
the Bankstown Bulldogs – the
feeder team for the Canterbury
Bulldogs. Brown has made two
appearances for the Bulldogs in
the NRL this season.
Gunn to lead Pride
Coastal Spirit coach Alana
Gunn has been announced
as the new head coach of the
Canterbury United Pride. She
takes over after the departure of
Mike DeBono who guided the
Pride to the national women’s
football title in 2016 and finals in
2015 and last year. Gunn guided
Coastal Spirit to the woman’s
premier league title last year.
She has also coached New
Zealand secondary schools girls
teams.

Britt said Dickel had been
a major influence in his
development so far.
“Mark has worked with me
for the past four years and has
been a key part in moulding me
into the player I am and want to
become,” he said.

Technical v Ferrymead
Bays: If Ferrymead Bays want to
keep their hopes of retaining the
Mainland Premier League title alive,
a victory over title rivals Cashmere
Technical at Garrick Memorial Park
is required. With the shortened
MPL season just past the halfway
mark, Bays find themselves three
points behind Cashmere with
five rounds remaining. A win for
Cashmere would see them take a
firm front seat with third-placed
Nelson Bays a further two points
behind Bays. Last season Bays and

Rally Whangarei – Matt
Summerfield: The 26-year-old
driver continues his bid to win his
first national rally championship at
the two-day International Rally of
Whangarei this weekend. Summerfield
had a solid but unspectacular
beginning to the championship in
the opening round in Otago last
month where he finished third.
After having a chance to get adjusted
to his new Mitsubishi Mirage,
NBL-style after his American
stint.
He started 58 of his 62 games
for Southeast Community
College in Nebraska.
“The games were faster,
the American guys were big
and use their bodies a lot,” Britt
said.
Britt was known as a guard
who liked to attack the rim
to try to create space for his
teammates to shoot.
He hoped to continue to
learn from Dickel and imports
Winston Shepard and Xavier
Thames in the hopes of securing
an Australian NBL development
contract.

Netball – Tactix: Are we in for
another miserable netball season? It
seems a long time since we have had
a team feature at the top end of the
table. The Tactix begin their season
on Sunday against the Northern
Stars. Preseason signs have been
promising for the Tactix; they went
undefeated through three games at
a tournament late last month which
included a 55-52 win over the Stars.
We should at the very least expect
an improvement on last year’s campaign,
which resulted in just two
wins from 15 games.
