PLANS TO develop an allweather
sporting facility in
Northcote would see six sporting
codes provided with up to 21
indoor courts.
A warehouse near the corner
of Main North and Northcote Rds,
currently tenanted by Toll Group,
could be reconfigured and ready
for use in two to three years.
Developers Kris Inglis and
Mike, Max and Glenn Percasky
outlined their plans to the
Papanui-Innes Community Board
recently.
Known as the Northcote Sports
and Entertainment Terminus,
it was granted resource consent
in August 2015 and will have 12
indoor courts for netball, futsal,
basketball, tennis, badminton and
volleyball.
A gymnasium, cafe, child care
centre, 450 car parks and other
sports entertainment options such
as 10-pin bowling, Laser Strike
and Clip ’n Climb will also be
included.
The other sports entertainment
options could be removed to
expand the facility to 21 indoor
courts.
RUSSLEY RESIDENTS have
“run out of patience” over
vehicles blocking their streets
near the Airport Business Park.
Avonhead Community Group
chairman Professor Somnath
Sarkar Bagchi says there are still
ongoing issues with business
park staff parking their vehicles
on residential streets.
He said
residents and
their visitors
struggle to
find parking
on their own
streets and
the problem
isn’t being addressed.
Prof Bagchi
said it’s a “prolonged” and “difficult”
issue which the group has
been dealing with for about five
years.
He said the city council and
the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board have
been trying to resolve the issue
but so far nothing has worked.
“People have lost faith in the
city council and its ability to
resolve this issue,” Prof Bagchi
said.
A city council spokeswoman
said more than 1000 time-related
infringement notices have been
issued in the area since July 11.
Infringement fees range from
$12 or less to $57 depending on
how long the vehicle has been
parked.
Letters released to Western
News under the Local Government
Official Information and
Meetings Act show city council
Mayor Lianne Dalziel sent a letter
regarding the concerns to the
Inland Revenue in January.
The IRD is one of the companies
based at the business park.
“Could you please advise
what measures you are putting
in place to ensure your staff are
not contributing to this serious
problem,” Ms Dalziel said.
She said there “was suggestion”
that IRD had been paying for
employees’ parking fines.
MORE DETAILS are expected
to be revealed tomorrow about
the horrific alleged murder of a
woman in her Merivale home.
A 54-year-old labourer from
Aranui will appear in the High
Court, accused of the killing.
The body of a woman, aged 27,
was found in the Exeter St house
shortly before noon on Saturday,
April 7, by a member of the public.
The accused was later arrested
and charged with murder and aggravated
robbery.
The names of the accused and
victim, and details about the police
investigation were suppressed
when he appeared at his first
court appearance on April 9.
He did not enter a plea and was
remanded in custody.
But details relating to the alleged
murder have sparked much
conjecture in Christchurch, some
details which are likely to come
clearer tomorrow.
SENIOR LIVING
A TINY piece of the city’s
railway history has come back
to life.
Railway Tce in Heathcote
Valley has been newly-repaired
following damage in the
September 4, 2010, and February
22, 2011, earthquakes.
The little street was formed
by New Zealand Rail in 1961
to build six workers’ houses
between Port Hills Rd and the
motorway.
NZR later sold them into
private ownership and each
resident owns a sixth of the
road.
It means there’s no city council
responsibility for maintenance
such as road sweepers, weed
spraying or drain clearance.
And the costs of fixing the
quake damage fell on the homeowners’
private insurance.
Plumber Peter Bigelow has
lived on Railway Tce for years.
He said it had taken quite a
bit of co-ordination to fix the
road as it came under private
insurance rather than EQC.
“Half of us were with AA
(Vero) and they took the lead,
managed it and went to the other
insurers.”
Fibre was laid first, then
potholes repaired and new kerbs
and footpaths are now going in.
The work has taken about a
month.
Mr Bigelow said Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson has been helpful
in advocating on behalf of the
Railway Tce homeowners.
Ngai Tuari shifted into a
three-bedroom property with
her engine driver husband
about 35 years ago and raised
her four children there, all of
them attending Heathcote Valley
Primary School.
“It’s a lovely street, I wouldn’t
move for quids. In fact, I sold my
other house, the original one, to
my son, so he’s my neighbour.
And he wouldn’t move for quids
as well.”
However, the private road is
“an awful pain,” Mrs Tuari said.
“It’s a private road, but that
doesn’t work because any of the
public are allowed to use it.
The only time it becomes a
private road is when we have
to pay for it. I’d love to put a gate
up there and you pay a
gold coin to go through it.
Then the upkeep wouldn’t be a
problem.”
“But it is a nice community
feel; it’s almost like the country;
you can hear cows, see the horse
paddocks and the watercress
growing everywhere. Just the feel
of the place, it’s lovely.”
PIECE OF HISTORY: Ngai Tuari is one of six homeowners living on Railway Tce, Heathcote, whose private insurance has funded the
repair of the earthquake-damaged road.
BANKS PENINSULA has been
compared to a high-maintenance
wife from Merivale.
“They look really good, but
very expensive.”
The remark came on
Monday during hearings on
the city council’s Long Term
Plan.
The Banks Peninsula
Community
Board made
a number of
requests for
extra funding
or for funding
to be brought
forward.
It prompted
Harewood
Ward city
councillor Aaron Keown to say:
“I loved your photos at the start.
It’s certainly competing for the
eastern suburbs for the best
photos of the city. The analogy
around the garden v the living
room – I think it’s better as a
family analogy and I look at
Banks Peninsula as more like a
Merivale wife – they look really
good but very expensive.”
for people to submit feedback to
the schools and the Ministry of
Education.
The two schools will relocate
to the new shared campus at QE
II Park next year and have been
required to develop a new zone
by the secretary of education.
The board of trustees from
both schools opened a consultation
document online at the
end of March, which closed on
Thursday.
The document included a ‘draft
zone’ which featured suburbs
Burwood, Parklands, New
Brighton, South Brighton and
Southshore, which is supported
by the MoE.
The Marshland area was featured
on the document as a ‘grey
zone’, meaning it was an area the
schools wish to have included in
the zone.
New Brightons RSA’s
executive manager Garry
House said this year’s
Anzac Day service was
“one of the best yet.”
“The RSA has great
support from the
community . . . we had
support from the Girl
Guides, the Boy Scouts,
the army, navy and air
force cadets, and so many
other groups. The New
Brighton fire brigade and
police also laid wreaths,’’
he said.
“They all support us
tremendously. We’re so
proud of the community,”
Mr House said.
The final stage of villa development is
progressing well at McKenzie Lifestyle
Village in Geraldine with target completion
in spring. Just a hand full of sites available
to secure off plan, so don’t be the one
to miss out. Moving into a brand new
architecturally designed villa priced from
$335,000 with the monthly outgoing fees
being fixed for life. Future plans see an
offering of Assisted Care Apartments that
compliment the independent lifestyle living.
Our beautiful Leisure Centre is very
popular with the residents who make
full use of the swimming and spa pools,
gymnasium, craft room, library and lounge
area. Outside, the Bowling Green is also
popular along with Petanque, Mini-golf and
Table Bowls. This coming summer will see
Croquet being played on our Village Green.
The residents’ monthly activities calendar
boasts the following; bowls events, concert
going (Operatunity), shopping trips, lunch
outings, yoga, housie, Qigong (Tai Chi),
happy hour, knitting, quiz nights, cards
and games, book club, Bible discussion,
craft sessions, and there are regular visits by
the hairdresser, massage therapist and the
podiatrist.
Geraldine is a great little town that many
come to for a holiday but you have the
opportunity to live the holiday lifestyle
all year round. There is plenty to do in
and around the town with art galleries,
theatre and cinema, interesting shops
and boutiques, two museums and a wide
range of good places to eat. For the more
adventurous there are river and forest walks
nearby, opportunities for biking and a choice
of two local golf clubs.
BRUISED BODIES, half-time
shots of port, taking on an
Australian great and plenty of
laughs was the recipe for the
Lincoln Lizards at the Golden
Oldies World Rugby Festival last
week.
THe team which formed
29 years ago had been eyeing
up the tournament since the
Christchurch event was first
confirmed. As well as taking on
a team from Alaska the Lizards
got the chance to play against
former Wallabies first-five
Stephen Larkham.
“THe biggest surprise to me
was how tall he was for a firstfive.
He’s got the legs to run
around us but the game was
played very low key,” said team
manager Mark Tweedy.
THe team of 28 was made up
of players who have previously
played with the Lincoln Rugby
Club, people new to Lincoln and
by word of mouth at the pub.
THe Lizards have a player base of
around 50 and play in six games
a year against other Canterbury
over 35-years-old team.
THe team for the festival
included one original Lizard.
Ron Fabian – who is now in his
early 70s – turned out for the
team in their first ever match in
1989.
Darfield
may lose
Crusaders
match
• By Jacob Page
THE CHANCES of Darfield
hosting the Crusaders and
Highlanders pre-season game next
year appears unlikely.
THe Darfield Rugby Club hosted
the summer fixture in 2017 and
wants to do so again.
But the Canterbury Rugby Football
Union’s insistence a spectator
mound be constructed has proven
an issue.
Darfield president Scott McIlroy
said constructing a mound on the
ground is not viable due to summer
sport use.
“THe ground itself is not viable to
host the game and I have looked at
other options including farmland
where a mound already exists but
that too will be expensive,” he said.
More than 5500 people turned
up to watch the 2017 match, including
then-Prime Minister Bill
English.
Minutes from the Malvern
Community Board meeting last
week showed Selwyn Mayor Sam
Broughton was told the CRFU
“would not consider viewing from
a flat-level surface acceptable.”
Mr McIlroy says he had previously
looked into building a 4000
seat temporary stand but at a cost
of more than $100,000, it was
considered uneconomic.
