Save a life!
Adopt a homeless Pet!
Our mayflower Buddy is a 47 lb. American English Coonhound
mix, and he has a beautiful long nose to prove it! Also referred to
as Redtick or English Coonhounds, the breed is known for trailing
and treeing game. Buddy is a big, goofy, wide-open kind of boy
who loves everybody. Buddy can jump straight up in the air 4 or 5
feet, like a spring, when you approach.
Noah’s Arc volunteers pulled Buddy from a kill shelter where he
was at the top of the euthanasia list for space. He’d come in as a
stray and tested positive for heartworms, which have been treated.
ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35
for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and
$200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All
organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic
expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely
a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the
animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded
shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that
will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit
your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these
animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to
ensure their safety and happiness in the future.
Road Trip with Pets
UNLIKE the couple in this cute graphic, taking a road trip with your pet involves more than stuffing him or her and your
luggage into the back seat of your car and cruising off down the highway; especially if you plan to be gone for a while.
Luckily for us, the ASPCA has come up with a series of tips to help you prepare for your trip.
• Prep pets for long trips by taking them on
several short drives, gradually lengthening
the time spent in the car. Pack your pets
rabies vaccination record or make
sure they are wearing the tag you got
at the time of the vaccination.
• Keep your pets safe in
well-ventilated crates
or carriers. Crates or
carriers should allow
the pet to stand, turn
around, sit, and lie down
stretched out. Secure the
crate so it will not slide or shift
when you put on the brakes. If you
choose not to crate them, never let
them ride with their head hanging out
the window and keep them in the back seat in a
harness attached to the seat belt.
• Pack a travel kit with pet food,
plenty of bottled water, leash, bowls,
plastic waste bags, medications,
and first-aid supplies. Their
travel-feeding schedule
should start with a light
meal three to four hours
before departure. Always
opt for bottled water. Drinking
water from an area he or she isn’t
used to could result in stomach
discomfort.
• Stop every few hours to let your
dogs stretch their legs and take a potty
break. Do not leave you pets alone in
a parked car. Even with the windows
open, on a hot day the car soon becomes a
furnace. In cold weather a car can act as a refrigerator
holding in the cold and they might die.
PREVENT A LITTER . . . FIX YOUR CRITTER!
Reduced Cost Spay/Neuter Resources and Subsidies for Low-Income Citizens
WHY SPAY & NEUTER?
• SPAYING & NEUTERING SPARES THE LIVES OF
UNWANTED PETS! Only 1 in 9 cats and dogs born in the
U.S. will find a home. The rest will be destroyed because
nobody wants them.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING CALMS YOUR PET! Altered
animals make more affectionate companions. Altered
animals are less likely to bite because they are more eventempered.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING INCREASES YOUR PET’S
SAFETY! Neutered males are less likely to roam, run
away, or get into fights. Spayed females are less likely to
attract unwanted animals into your yard.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING EXTENDS YOUR PET’S
LIFE! Altered animals live longer, healthier lives. Female
cats and dogs have reduced risks of uterine, ovarian, and
breast cancers. Male cats and dogs have reduced risks of
prostate cancer and disorders.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING RESULTS IN A CLEANER
HOME! Neutered cats are less likely to spray and mark
territory. Spaying eliminates carpet stains from bloody
fluid passed by female dogs during the heat cycle.
2017 Results
The GoNorth Transport Collaborative is a
group of animal shelters in east Tennessee
that work together to transport animals to
under-capacity northern animal shelters with
high adoption demand. Most shelters in east
Tennessee are perpetually overcrowded due
to random breeding by roaming, unaltered
pets. Pet overpopulation is generally not a
problem in northern states, where spaying
and neutering of pets is a routine part of
responsible pet ownership.
A total of 2682 animals were transported
to northern shelters in 2017. Since the
program’s inception in 2012, 11,275 animals
have been transported from east Tennessee
to partner shelters in northern states.
Transports take place twice each week with
an average of 25 animals per transport.
Sending shelters that participate in GoNorth
report that they have been able to eliminate
euthanasia for space.
East Tennessee shelter
statistics are improving,
i.e., more animals are
saved and fewer are
euthanized.
TENNESSEE VALLEY
GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE
(865) 558-3100
www.tvgrr.com • rescue@tvgrr.com
Quincy is an elderly gent,
quite spry for his age and
ready for adventures. But,
he also likes the calm life
hanging out with family. He
is about 9 years old and
54 lbs. Quincy is a Golden
Retriever / Golden Lab
mix. He like car rides, other
dogs, and people. Quincy is
ready for a family who will
love him; one that he can
love back.
Huxley (right) is a 1 to 2 year old Great Pyrenees mix with
the cutest freckles ever. He weighs about 65 lbs. Huxley is a
lovable, active boy, who
needs an active family.
He learns quickly. He is
getting better on a leash
and is working on basic
obedience skills. He would
do best with children over
5 because he is young and
playful, and might frighten
or knock over younger
children. He is pretty good
with other dogs.
OF EAST TENNESSEE
Sydney (right) is an 8 year old
female that is looking for a new
home since her last adopters
divorced and neither of them
could take care of her. She is
extremely playful and loyal and
enjoys car rides and playing
fetch. She is great with children.
Sydney needs to be your only
pet. She is housetrained and
crate-trained.
Nikki (left) has had three tail
amputations and some OCD
issues related to her early
life in an outdoor kennel. She
has mostly stopped her OCD
behaviors and learned to
enjoy life. Nikki would do best
in a home with another calm
dog or possibly as an only
dog. She has been fostered
in a home with cats. Because
Nikki is easily stressed, she
needs a home with no small
children.
