OSHA’S CONSTRUCTION SILICA REGULATION
9:30AM - 10:30AM - WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY
OSHA issued a new regulation for silica in construction in 2016, that became effective in October 2017. The law covers all occupational exposure to
silica in construction. Silica is present in construction materials that contain sand, such as concrete, brick, mortar and cent based siding, and this law
affects 2 million workers in construction. Silica can cause lung cancer, silicosis and other health effects.
OSHA has identified 18 common job tasks in construction with silica exposure and specific control measures for those tasks. For construction tasks
outside of these 18 tasks, the employer is required to conduct air sampling to determine worker exposure to silica or rely on other objective data. This
talk will discuss the 18 tasks and the employer’s options on compliance with the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter
of air. The new rule requires engineering controls, housekeeping provisions, a written program, as well as worker training and medical and respiratory
protection exams. This talk will cover the major provisions of the rule and what employers need to do to comply.
As a small business owner, you probably don’t need scientific data to convince you that a little distraction-free time now and then would be incredibly
helpful, but here’s a stat just for good measure: we accomplish roughly 50% less when we try to do two—or more—things at once. If you don’t have
in-house phone help, a virtual receptionist service can be a life (and sanity) saver when you need to hunker down and get things done, giving you the
freedom to focus without worrying about incoming calls.
Target Audience: Contractors, General Contractors, Remodelers, Plumbers, Roofers, and HVAC companies with a business of 20 employees or less
