Dear Friends,<br />

I would like to thank you for your valuable partnership, well-wishing and prayers for<br />

Transformation Nepal. The year <strong>2016</strong>-20<strong>17</strong> was the year of restoration from Mega<br />

Earthquake. Transformation Nepal has actively responded to the needs of the Earthquake<br />

affected families in Nepal. Transformation Nepal has also served actively with<br />

its’ program in Education, Livelihood and Disaster Management. It was the year of<br />

completion of our last five-year strategic plan and starting of the new five-year strategic<br />

plan 20<strong>17</strong>-2019.<br />

The new strategic plan has given us new direction founded on our learning and experiences.<br />

Due to it, we have increased our capacity developing ourselves more in Education,<br />

Livelihood, and Disaster Management sectors. The credits for the success of<br />

Transformation Nepal go to all our stakeholders and partners. Therefore, I would like<br />

to express the deepest gratitude to all our stakeholders and partners, particularly our<br />

supporting partners, churches and government of Nepal. Please pray for the work of<br />

TFN in the coming year and for Nepal on its journey towards institutionalizing Federal<br />

Government System and stable Constitutional order.<br />

Executive Summary<br />

Nepali Fiscal Year <strong>2016</strong>-20<strong>17</strong> has been the year of restoration for Transformation Nepal. The organization<br />

has grown fast in 2015 and in <strong>2016</strong> providing emergency and recovery support to the Mega Earthquake<br />

affected people. There were three projects and 22 staffs in 2014 and in 20<strong>17</strong> we have 11 projects<br />

and more than five completed. There are 55 staffs and 8 interns working in Transformation Nepal.<br />

Following the new strategic plan 20<strong>17</strong>-2021, we have decided to restore and strengthen ourselves for<br />

quality service to the communities of Nepal.<br />

Transformation Nepal has been working in Education, Livelihood and Disaster Management. During the<br />

year <strong>2016</strong>-20<strong>17</strong>, Transformation Nepal has succeeded to achieve it’s mission significantly.<br />

In Education, we have supported 148 schools. We have been able to improve quality education for<br />

10,124 children and 6,000 parents. We have trained 82 teachers and 802 School Management Committee<br />

members. We have equipped 63 classrooms and empowered 10 Child Clubs. We provided vocational<br />

trainings to 101 youths. We succeeded to place 81% on jobs through our three Vocational Training<br />

Centres. 754 out of 825 Literacy participants (Rana Tharu Adults) have been literate from Mother<br />

Tongue-Based Literacy Projects. 60 poor and earthquake affected students got opportunities to continue<br />

their study through sponsorship program.<br />

1,107 families have improved their livelihood options through Livelihood Improvement Program and<br />

Local Governance & Community Development Program.<br />

In Disaster Management , we have constructed three school buildings and 55 houses for Dalit families.<br />

We have supported 190 families to restore their livelihood through different programs.<br />

We have improved our organizational capacity. We have very good documentation, program management<br />

and financial management system in place. We have all the equipment to enhance our work and<br />

to reach among the poor and marginalized people of Nepal. We have developed strong relationship<br />

with government line agencies and our supporting partners through effective and efficient partnership.<br />

For all the significant achievements of this year, we are very grateful and thankful to all the organizations<br />

and individuals for their trust and supports to us. With the great team work, we have been able to<br />

achieve of our mission and strategy. We are also very hopeful to continue our future cooperation with<br />

3. The Organizational Background<br />

Transformation Nepal is a Christian Faith-Based Non-Governmental Organization<br />

established in 2008 and registered in District Administration Office of<br />

Bhaktapur, Nepal. The organization has been affiliated with Social Welfare<br />

Council of Nepal, Federation of Nepalese NGOs and Micah International. Executive<br />

Board has been leading the organization. There are nine members in the<br />

board. The Program Director has been leading the programs.<br />

HOLISTICALLY TRANSFORMED AND PROSPEROUS SOCIETY is the vision of the<br />

organization. It defines holistic transformation as the transformation of mind,<br />

body, social and spiritual relations. TFN believes that a community can be<br />

transformed when the members of it are healthy within themselves, they have<br />

healthy relationships with their neighbors and they have a healthy relationship<br />

with God.<br />

FULLNESS of LIFE is the right of every human. Human Rights initiatives want to<br />

achieve FULLNESS of LIFE. It is the enteral desire of Jesus Christ as He prayed<br />

with Father in John 10:10 “…. I have come that they have life and have it to<br />

the full.” Inspired by the love and teaching of Jesus Christ, TFN’s mission is to<br />

WORK FOR HOLISTIC TRANSFORMATION OF VULNERABLE AND MARGINAL-<br />

IZED PEOPLE OF NEPAL.<br />

TFN is committed to working with marginalized and poor communities of Nepal.<br />

TFN will program its effort to empower the socioeconomically disadvantaged<br />

groups of men, women, youths and children. Keeping in view the overall<br />

socio-cultural fabric of the society, the overall power imbalances and discriminations<br />

that exist at all levels; TFN will work amongst these groups, the most<br />

vulnerable and the marginalized ones. TFN also focuses on inclusion and empowerment<br />

of minorities and special groups such as orphans, widows, a person<br />

with a disability, a person with HIV/AIDS and Dalit.<br />

4. Organizational Strategic Objectives:<br />

Transformation Nepal has successfully completed it’s first strategic plan<br />

2012-<strong>2016</strong>. The organization has developed new five years’ strategic plan<br />

20<strong>17</strong>-2021. The main Strategic Objectives (SO) of the organization are:<br />

SO 1: Increase access to Child-Friendly Education in 200 state schools.<br />

SO 2: Empower youths with Vocational Skills.<br />

SO 3: Increase the income of families for better livelihood options.<br />

SO 4: Empower communities with Disaster Preparedness and Resilience.<br />

5. Thematic Progress in <strong>2016</strong>-<strong>17</strong><br />

To achieve the Strategic Objectives of the organization, it has aimed to work<br />

mainly in Education, Livelihood and Disaster Management. The strategic<br />

objectives one and two have been covered by Education Program, strategic<br />

objective three has been covered by Livelihood Program and strategic objective<br />

four has been covered by Disaster Management Program.<br />

5.1 Education Program<br />

A. No Child Left Behind Project (Primary Education): The main objective of<br />

the project is to improve access of children to quality education. The project<br />

has been supporting 16 schools of Sarlahi and Rukum districts. The project<br />

has been supporting 16 government schools, 10 in Sarlahi and 6 in<br />

Rukum, to improve the quality of education for children. The key achievements<br />

of the project during this reporting period are as below:<br />

4592 children benefitted from Child-Friendly Education.<br />

82 Teachers trained in teaching and learning process, classroom management<br />

and educational materials development.<br />

63 classrooms equipped with child-centered teaching and learning materials.<br />

19 classrooms were maintained and managed.<br />

70 School Management Committee Members are trained on SMC roles for<br />

school improvement and educational development.<br />

16 schools have increased extra-curricular activities.<br />

10 child clubs have actively participated in educational and community<br />

awareness activities.<br />

891 parents have benefitted from parental education.<br />

30 school dropout children have continued their formal education.<br />

Regular advocacy, coordination, and networking have been done with concern<br />

stakeholders and line agencies.<br />

B. No Child Left Behind (Vocational Education): Three Vocational Pieces of<br />

training have been established and functioning under No Child Left Behind<br />

Project. One each Vocational Training Centre with Computer Course in Sarlahi<br />

and Rukum has been benefitting high school students and youths. One<br />

Vocational Training Centre with Hotel Management Course has been functioning<br />

in Bhaktapur district. The key achievements for the year are:<br />

43 Vocational Training conducted from which 101 youths benefitted.<br />

81% of youths have got paid jobs after the training.<br />

C. Mother tongue Literacy Project: Rana Tharu Adult Transitional Literacy<br />

Project: The major objectives of the project are to preserve and promote<br />

Rana Tharu language and increase literacy rate of adults in Rana Tharu<br />

communities of Kailali and Kanchanpur districts. This reporting year was the<br />

final year of the project. It has gone through final evaluation from Social<br />

Welfare Council of Nepal.<br />

The key achievements of the project are:<br />

Rana Tharu language and Nepali language textbooks and reading books developed<br />

and used for the literacy classes.<br />

825 adults participated in the literacy classes. Out of them, 754 participants<br />

successfully completed the literacy classes. It is 91.39% of total participants.<br />

The evaluation of the participants has shown that participants have learned<br />

to read and write, calculate and increased knowledge, awareness on their<br />

mother tongue language and preservation of them. The evaluation has also<br />

shown that the participants have increased their personal development,<br />

they are more confident and more capable to express themselves.<br />

While developing a textbook for the project, few local Rana Tharu people<br />

have been selected and involved in the book development process. It made<br />

them more capable on their mother tongue and how to use local resources<br />

for their language development.<br />

The literacy curriculum has also included life skill related knowledge and livelihood<br />

related knowledge. The impact of the curriculum has shown in the life<br />

of participants. The participants have used the knowledge to grow vegetables,<br />

start grocery shop and do their household works more efficiently. The<br />

project has also helped the participants to improve their sanitation and hygiene,<br />

sending their children to school.<br />

D. Chitwaniya Tharu Adult Transitional Literacy Project: The main objectives<br />

of the project are to preserve Chitwaniya Tharu language and to increase the<br />

adult literacy of adults in Nawalparasi district. The project has been implementing<br />

in Kawasoti and Madhyabindu Municipalities of the district. The key<br />

achievements of the project area:<br />

Chitwaniya Tharu language Primer Book for Literacy class has developed,<br />

printed and used for the class.<br />

Mid-region Tharu Orthography developed and has contributed in their literature<br />

being as a mild-stone.<br />

Reading book in Chitwaniya Tharu Language has developed, published and<br />

distributed.<br />

124 participants have successfully completed the mother tongue-based literacy<br />

class.<br />

E. Sponsorship for Secondary School Students Project: The main objective of<br />

the project was to support the poor and earthquake affected students financially<br />

and technically to continue their education after the earthquake. There<br />

were 60 students supported by the project. The key achievements of the<br />

project are:<br />

60 poor students continue their education after the earthquake and by the<br />

support of the project.<br />

The trained teachers have been teaching and following up the education of<br />

students.<br />

The parents have increased their knowledge on educating their children after<br />

participating in the project.<br />

Students are more aware on how to cope difficult situation and continue<br />

their education.<br />

F. Early Grade Reading Program: This project is the part of National Early<br />

Grade Reading Program of Government of Nepal and funded by USAID. The<br />

main objective of this project is to support families and communities will be<br />

increased for the promotion of reading of early graders in Bhaktapur district.<br />

The project aims to mobilize Community to achieve the objective through<br />

increasing awareness of the community on the importance of the language<br />

of instruction, increasing the ability of Parent Teacher Association and<br />

School Management Committee to contribute to quality reading instruction<br />

and increasing capacity of parents and community to monitor reading progress.<br />

The key achievements of the project during this year are:<br />

5532 students of grade one to three have benefitted from the program.<br />

250 Tole Reading Groups have formed and trained to promote Early Grade<br />

Reading.<br />

4286 parents have participated in TRGs increasing their knowledge and skills<br />

to promote Early Reading of their children.<br />

2460 parents have been the members of TRGs who has been mobilized in<br />

the communities for EGR activities.<br />

5122 parents have participated in locally Reading Materials Development<br />

which increased their knowledge and skills to develop and use local materials<br />

for Early Graders’ reading development.<br />

3752 parents improved their mobilization skills through peer education<br />

training.<br />

732 School Management Committee members have increased their<br />

knowledge and skills on School Improvement Plans and implementation of<br />

Early Grade Reading activities in their schools.<br />

2202 parents and teachers participated in the promotion of Early Grade<br />

Reading activities through a parent-teacher conference.<br />

Increased coordination and cooperation with all municipalities of Bhaktapur<br />

district.<br />

Increased coordination with district line agencies for the project which has<br />

also impacted in publicity of the work of the organization.<br />

5.2 Livelihood Program<br />

During this reporting period, Transformation Nepal has been implementing<br />

following Livelihood Program:<br />

A. Local Governance and Community Development Project Madhyapur Thimi<br />

and Nagarkot Municipalities: Transformation Nepal has been implementing<br />

two LGCD projects in partnership with the government of Nepal. One<br />

LGCDP has been in partnership with Madhyapur Thimi Municipality Office<br />

and another in partnership with Nagarkot Municipality Office of Bhaktapur<br />

district. The main objective of the projects was to increase knowledge and<br />

awareness of local people, especially poor families, to access government<br />

facilities and to own their development by themselves. Community empowerment<br />

was an approach for the projects. The projects have been implemented<br />

in close coordination with government line agencies and with Ward<br />

Citizen Forums and Community Awareness Centers. The key achievements<br />

of the projects are:<br />

The community people have increased their knowledge and information on<br />

local level planning. They have planned their community development initiatives<br />

and got approved by Municipality Office.<br />

All the Ward Citizen Forums have received small funding from Municipality<br />

Office which they have used for their income generation and training.<br />

The Citizen Awareness Centers have mobilized their saving and credit<br />

schemes to their members which helped the poor families earn an average<br />

of NRs. 8000 to NRs. 12000 monthly.<br />

The community people have increased their coordination with other NGOs<br />

such as INFO, DIPROX, RED CROSS and other which have mobilized their resources<br />

for community development after earthquake situation.<br />

The community members have regularly followed up with Ward Office and<br />

Municipality Offices for available facilities for them.<br />

937 families have participated and benefitted from the project.<br />

B. Livelihood Improvement for Earthquake Affected Families Project: After<br />

the Mega Earthquake 2015, Transformation Nepal has been implementing<br />

this project to improve the livelihood of families in Nuwakot and Bhaktapur<br />

district. This project has been implementing in Bidur Municipality and Madhyapur<br />

Thimi Municipality. The project aims to strengthen community groups,<br />

strengthen institutional facilities of them and increase their income through<br />

improved livelihood options after the Earthquake. The key achievements of<br />

the project in this year are:<br />

11 Community Groups are actively taking participating in the project. The<br />

Community Groups have been empowered through Group Management and<br />

Financial Management training.<br />

The Community Groups have starting Saving and mobilizing their financial<br />

resources for their members. 11 Community Groups have saved NRs.<br />

2,310,643 (USD. 21,800) of which they have mobilized NRs. 1,546,600 (USD<br />

14,580) as the revolving fund and NRs. 764,643 (USD 7220) as saving in their<br />

bank account.<br />

The Community Groups have increased awareness of the community people<br />

organizing different awareness activities on health, hygiene, education, sanitation<br />

and government provision for them. They have also conducted awareness<br />

activities on their rights and duties as a citizen of Nepal.<br />

The Community members have participated in many income generating<br />

training such as vegetable farming, goat keeping, chicken farming, dairy<br />

product, fast food, grocery shop, mobile repairing, tailoring and small business<br />

development training.<br />

Revolving fund NRs. 1,600,000 (USD 15094) has been provided to the Community<br />

Groups so that they can provide as a loan to the group's members to<br />

start their own income-generating activities after the training.<br />

The Community people have improved their market linkage in coordination<br />

with District Agriculture Office.<br />

The Community people have improved their irrigation systems through installing<br />

rainwater harvesting tanks, dripping water irrigation system, river<br />

water uplifting system and water reservation tank construction.<br />

The strong coordination with government line agencies has resulted in increased<br />

technical and materials support to the community people. The Small<br />

Cottage Industry Office of Nuwakot has supported in conducting mobile repairing<br />

training, Electricity Authority Office of Nuwakot has installed three<br />

phages high voltage electricity line for the river water uplifting system and<br />

District Agriculture Office has technically supported the Community Groups<br />

for market linkage.<br />

5.3 Disaster Management Program<br />

Transformation Nepal has actively been responding to the need of Disaster Management<br />

in Nepal since it’s establishment. It has been actively working through disaster<br />

preparedness and emergency response projects since 2008. During Mega Earthquake,<br />

TFN has reached to more than 10,000 families with emergency response and<br />

recovery support such as materials distribution and temporary shelter construction<br />

to the affected families. TFN has been working with Livelihood recovery, School<br />

Building reconstruction and Dalit Housing Projects in this reporting year.<br />

A. Safer Classrooms for Earthquake Affected Children Project: The main objective of<br />

the project was to provide safer and better two rooms’ school building to three<br />

schools of Nuwakot district after the Earthquake. The key achievement of the project<br />

are:<br />

Three School Building with two rooms in JICA model has been built and handed over<br />

to Trisuli Primary School, Indrayani Primary School and Sundaradevi Prima- ry School<br />

of Bidur Municipality and Tupche Rural Municipality.<br />

210 students, 18 teachers and 134 parents have benefitted from the project.<br />

The safer and better school building with spacious rooms have also provided space<br />

for emergency rescue shelter of the communities for future disaster.<br />

B. Earthquake Recovery Support to Dalit Communities project: The main objective of<br />

the project to support dalit households of Shankarapur Municipality of Kathmandu<br />

district to restore their life to normal situation after Mega Earthquake. The project<br />

aimed to provide house to 55 households, to support households to restore WASH<br />

facilities and improve hygiene condition, to resume livelihood options and to provide<br />

scholarship to continue formal education. The key achievements of the project<br />

in this reporting year are:<br />

45 dalit houses constructed and families started living in them.<br />

One Drinking Water facility installed in one community benefitting 140 house holds.<br />

20 members of dalit community trained on goat farming and received fund to start<br />

micro-enterprises. All of them started goat keeping.<br />

Two dalit girls continued their Bachelor of formal education in Social Work<br />

with full scholarship. In addition to the above projects, Transformation Nepal<br />

has implemented short term activities to the cold wave affected families of<br />

Sarlahi, Rukum and Surkhet with Jackets, blankets and mosquito nets distribution<br />

and health camps.<br />

5.4 Working with Churches for Neighborhood Transformation:<br />

The objective of the project is to empower local Churches for Integral Mission.<br />

Transformation Nepal has been working with local Churches in Rukum,<br />

Dang, Kathmandu and Sarlahi districts. The key achievements of this year:<br />

11 Churches and it’s leaders have trained on Integral Mission, Community<br />

engagement and CHEs.<br />

10 Community Champions have been trained and supported.<br />

5 Community Groups formed and has been mobilized for Community Development<br />

through local Churches.<br />

6. Program Management<br />

Transformation Nepal has grown it’s program management capacity more<br />

effectively and efficiently this year. It was the year of normalization of the<br />

program management after the Mega Earthquake as TFN has rushed to support<br />

the affected families in last year. The Key achievements of the Program<br />

Management are:<br />

Executive Committee members have actively led the organization making<br />

efficient and effective decision.<br />

Senior Management Team led by Program Director of the organization has<br />

managed the program and also contributed in new funding and program.<br />

Partnership with RTI International for EGRP under USAID funding was the<br />

significant result in this year.<br />

Program Documentation has improved during this year. The program has<br />

more specific and clear data management, monitoring and reporting system<br />

in place.<br />

The staffs have increased more capacity through training and on the job<br />

mentoring support provided by their line manager this year.<br />

Administration of the organization has improved providing significant support<br />

to the programs.<br />

Financial Management Capacity has increased using software such as MoneyWorks<br />

which made the system more effective increasing governance of<br />

the organization.<br />

Working with Churches for Neighborhood Transformation has improved coordination<br />

and networking with Nepalese Churches. It has empowered them<br />

on a holistic mission and caring for their neighbors who are in need.<br />

Organizational networking has increased with interested organization nationally<br />

and internationally.<br />

The organization has increased human resource capacity. It has 55 full-time<br />

staffs and 9 interns working in different programs.<br />

7. Finance:<br />

The finance of the organization was effective and efficient this year. Transformation<br />

Nepal has received NRs. 43,765,550 (USD 416,815) this year. The<br />

last year balance was NRs. 11,046,190 (USD 105,202).<br />

Transformation Nepal has spent NRs. 51,773,694 (USD 493,083) in this Nepali<br />

fiscal year. It has NRs. 3,038,047 (USD 28, 934) closing balance by the<br />

end of the Nepali fiscal year <strong>2016</strong>-20<strong>17</strong>.<br />
