ART, CULTURE & LANGUAGE
Let’s Read a Play!
No stage or acting experience required. Join us for the opportunity
to have some fun and to polish our dramatic skills. Our director,
Maria Ruiz, will introduce the authors and theater history of each
play before readings begin. You are invited to become a part of
this interesting and interactive approach to enjoying a play and to
experience cold readings. Expect lively discussion about meaning
and content.
Students usually obtain copies of the plays from libraries
or purchase copies.
Refreshments will be served.
Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde,
June 8, 15
Lady Windermere suspects her husband is having
an affair. She confronts him but although he denies
it, he invites the “other woman” to his wife’s birthday
ball. The play was Oscar Wilde first success, a
perfect balance between seriousness and comedy.
The central theme is summed up in this quote by Lord Darlington:
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

The defense and the prosecution have rested and
the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a
young man is guilty or innocent of murdering his
father. What begins as an open-and-shut case
of murder soon becomes a detective story that
presents a succession of clues creating doubt, and a mini-drama of
each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial,
the accused and each other.
The Odd Couple by Neil Simon,

Felix Ungar, a neurotic, neat-freak news writer
is thrown out by his wife, and moves in with his
friend Oscar Madison, a slovenly sportswriter.
Despite Oscar’s problems—careless spending,
excessive gambling, a poorly kept house filled with
spoiled food—he seems to enjoy life. Felix, however, seems utterly
incapable of enjoying anything and only finds purpose in pointing
out his own and other people’s mistakes and foibles.
Instructor and Facilitator: Maria Ruiz is
a member of both OLLI and Omnilore;
a District Toastmasters Qualified
Speaker; and the “drama guru” at the
Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach.
She also directs and produces at the
Dramatic Readers Theater in two South
Bay locations.
