TENDER THOUGHTS
WE ASKED A NUMBER OF INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS
ABOUT THEIR FIRST AND CURRENT TENDERS AND THE
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS WHEN BUYING A NEW TENDER
KEN ECKERT
Engineering Manager
Mercury Marine PD& E
What has been your favourite
tender during your career
and why?
A large outboard powered centre console. My
favourite model is the Boston Whaler 350 Outrage.
If you could buy any tender today, which one
would it be?
I currently own a Whaler 350 Outrage. The Outrage
is the Cadillac V series of centre consoles.
If building a custom tender, what are the most
important elements for you?
Comfortable, adequate seating for the family, a head
that is roomy and well appointed, a dive door is a
must with easy ingress and egress to the water,
Storage, storage, storage (dive tanks, rods & reels,
personal items).
Inboard or outboard and why?
100% outboard; performance, efficiency, ease of
maintenance and serviceability and the ability to
trim engines completely out of the water.
SEBASTIAN BIEN M/Y Captain
What has been your favourite
tender during your career
and why?
Williams. Solid make, good
service, very comfortable on
the choppy sea and great at
keeping the guests dry. I spent
many years in the Greek waters where you
took guests from one island to another, and we
BRENDON O’SULLIVAN
Chief Engineer
New Build 98m Aviva
Tenders are the bane of my
life early in a project as they
get selected by an owner
and or his captain/advisors, then again when
the crew turn up and have a whole different
idea of what they ‘need’. Most of those needs
are in reality a list of wants because the new
tenders are different to what they are used
to and they just need some time to get used
to what they have.
What has been your favourite tender during
your career and why?
I have been involved in a number of them and
only have one I would care to repeat. Custom
Tender 6.5m. Nice to operate, good on fuel,
economic to maintain.
If you could buy any tender today, which one
would it be?
A modern version of the same thing maybe
stretched a bit.
always felt very comfortable and safe with them.
If you could buy any tender today, which one
would it be?
Definitely WILLIAMS. This is from my experience
from yachts sized 25m - 38m.
Inboard or outboard and why?
Inboard. They’re safe for guests and great for
using with watersports, plus easy to maintain.
CLIFFORD DENN
Superyacht Designer
Over the past few years, have you
seen a greater need or more requests
to implement larger tender garages
within your designs?
Not really, I think everyone has always
wanted as big a tender as possible!
There is never enough space for toy
storage/slides/jetski/ etc including
sunbeds and all the usual stuff. It is
just a compromise and balance with
interior space. Personally I don’t think
making the tender garage a beach club
as well works as it always ends up
looking too technical. Tender garages
have moved away from the aft (further
forward or to bow area) to allow the
bathing platform to access directly to
beach clubs. People tend to want the
tenders inside to protect them and
not see them.
As a designer, have you considered
designing luxury tenders?
Yes and I would love to do more. I have
already done a lot of work for Fassmer
on their lifeboat tenders. The 9.26m was
a ‘yacht’ tender that was also a lifeboat.
If you could buy a tender tomorrow
which one would it be ?
I think I would look into a hydrofoil.
I would also be looking at anything
green or electric - all starting to come
now. Maybe there is a hybrid motor or
sailer tender possible?
Inboard or outboard and why?
For me it needs to be an inboard for
the luxury look and feel as it is more
refined and integrated.
DAMIEN MARTIN
Y.CO
Yacht Manager
What has been your favourite
tender during your career
and why?
The Rafnar Flengur. It is an
absolute workhorse and
indestructible. The builders
gave one to the Icelandic
Coastguard and told them
to break it, they couldn’t, so
they got a crane and did a
pendulum test against a wall,
the wall fell over, so they gave
it back to the Coastguard and
said try again.
If you could buy any tender
today, which one would it be?
It would be one of three:
1. A Rafnar either the Flengur
or her bigger sister, Leiftur
2. A Revolt – superfast, with
seven marine engines with
suspended seats. Very fun
to drive, almost dangerously
comfortable.
3. A Zodiac Hurricane MILPRO
A bit like an angrier big
brother to the Revolt. The
Revolt comes into her own
on calm days, whereas the
Hurricane is what the Navy
SEALs use to get to work.
If building a custom tender,
what are the most important
elements for you?
When they build a tank, they
talk about mobility, armour
and armament. In tenders I
think there is a similar ethos:
handling, seaworthiness,
comfort and safety. A tender
needs to drive well, in all
conditions getting crew and
guests to where they need to
be, in one piece and without
needing a change of clothes…
I like to think that any tender
might be required in a man
overboard, or abandon ship
scenario in the worst case
planning. So whilst it may
look shiny and nice, it needs
to be able to function in the
most challenging situations
and conditions.
AS A LONG TIME CAPTAIN AND NOW PROLIFIC SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY
JOURNALIST, MICHAEL HOWORTH SPENDS MOST OF THE YEAR
TRAVELLING TO SHIPYARDS AND YACHT SHOWS AROUND THE WORLD
LOOKING AT THE LATEST AND GREATEST THE INDUSTRY HAS TO OFFER.
THERE IS NO DOUBT HE KNOWS HIS STUFF, SO WE ASKED HIM IF MONEY
WERE NO OBJECT, WHAT WOULD HE BUY IN TERMS OF THE ULTIMATE
SUPERYACHT TOY, CHASE BOAT, JET BOAT AND SPORTS BOAT
ULTIMATE SUPERYACHT TOY
When we first broached the subject of
the ultimate toy we soon discovered
Howorth had probably been watching
too many Youtube videos. “Have you seen the
Selby Piper 50?” he said. “It’s a futuristic take on
the proven Lippisch configuration of the ‘wing
in ground effect’ aircraft created especially for
the leisure market.” He showed us pictures and
it looked amazing, we even spoke to the head
designer and discovered that the project has been
10 years in the making by a team of highly skilled
and experience aviation experts, together with
experts from Custom Carbon Ltd in the UK, who
are experienced with Kawasaki super bikes, UK
GT series, European Le Mans series and Historic F1
vehicles… so the pedigree couldn’t be much better.
8 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

CHASE
BOAT
We asked him to choose his ultimate
chase boat and after waffling on
trying to define what a chase boat
actually is or is not, we demanded a final choice.
“OK,” he said. “I think I’d go for the Wajer
Yachts 55 because it simply oozes style and
sophistication on the water.” Howorth reckons
this boat does everything you want a chase
tender to do. Stand out from the crowd, make
a big impression every time you enter a marina
and with the IPS600 it’s easy to park it like a
pro in any conditions…Well almost! The Wajer
Yachts 55 is big enough to offer a healthy mix
of interior cabin space with a private galley,
sleeping accommodation, toilet and shower,
plenty of comfortable guest seating outside
for those ship to shore transfers, helm seats for
those who want to be more involved with the
driving experience and finally sun pads in case
your guests want to chill out in the sun after a
hard day enjoying the other water toys on board
or after a strenuous lunch.
ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 9

JET BOAT
LIMOSINE
Of course Howorth wanted to opt for the
Vikal 12m catamaran from Australia as his
must have jet boat and who could blame
him! At 3 million euros it has to be the ultimate jet
boat under 13 metres but we reminded him that
it could not count given he had already chosen it
as his all time favourite limousine tender. “Choose
another one,” we told him. So he pondered and
opted for the Williams Diesel-Jet 625 Sport
because it can be customised to suit his eye
watering colour requirements. He was quite taken
by the outlandish use of green and yellow on the
one carried aboard the superyacht Eos. With a
starting price around €81K for the base boat, and
a good selection of options even the average
owner would find it hard to spend anything like
the cost of the Vikal.
SPORTS BOAT
When it came to sports boats,
Howorth became more animated
and started to tell us of the Super
Air Nautique GS 24 with its 550hp engine and
a €160K price tag. It was when we showed him
pictures of the new 50th anniversary, XT25,
the largest multi purpose crossover boat from
Mastercraft that the conversation took a turn.
The first new boat launch of 2018 in what will
be MasterCraft’s 50th anniversary year has a
new crossover hull bottom that will deliver huge
wakeboard wakes and customisable surf waves
as well as smooth slalom skiing. Specialist
Sports Boats have always been big sellers in the
USA, but now we’re seeing many yacht owners
who cruise on the Mediterranean looking for a
specialised sports or tow boat. With a radical
new hull design for unparalleled wakes and the
FastFill Ballast System to get them rolling in
under three minutes, the boat also has a new
custom rudder for next-level-nimble handling.
As they say it serves up the biggest, baddest
wake in the industry.
ADVERTORIAL
BACK TO BASICS
Josh Richardson asks if we have lost sight
of enjoying the thrill of more traditional toys
At Superyacht Tenders and Toys we
are always at the forefront of new
toys and services coming into the
industry, whether this is new inflatables,
foiling surfboards, jetskis or submersibles.
In this industry there is a focus on high end,
expensive new toys. There is an increasing
trend among yachts demanding toys which
provide as large a thrill as possible, with
the minimal amount of skill for instant
gratification. As watersports enthusiasts
and former instructors ourselves we hope
that the industry does not become overrun
with new battery powered toys but that the
costing €15k each, and when we test rode
these they simply did not perform, giving
only 10 knots speed at best with other
issues on top. This meant that we had
no choice but to send these back to the
manufacturer and refund the client as
we could simply not recommend them.
There is a real danger here of believing all
the hype around a new toy but that item
not being able to perform as expected.
Often products go to market too soon
and manufacturers have not had the time
to test and refine and ensure they are fit
for purpose. On occasion we have been
told by manufacturers that they plan to
it is easy to see what the trends are.
Unfortunately, this makes bleak reading
for us wind sport enthusiasts, as there
is a downwards trend in sail sports which,
perhaps for a large proportion of us, is the
whole reason we got involved in the industry
in the first place. Seemingly they do not
offer the instant gratification required by
the quick-fix generation.
Orders for kitesurfing, dinghies and
windsurfing are very low compared to
Seabobs and other toys. However, new
generation toys such as the Tiwal sailboat
have helped, offering a good sailing experience
OWNERS AND CHARTERERS ARE BECOMING MORE FITNESS AWARE, AND PADDLE
BOARDS OFFER A GOOD WAY TO TAKE EXERCISE AND ENJOY BEING ON THE WATER
simple life of wind sports and just getting
out on the water and enjoying the peace
it has to offer does not get lost.
Owners and charterers are always seeking
the latest and greatest toys to play on.
One such new toy which springs to mind is
the electric surfboards which are on many
yacht shopping lists. They have sold well over
the past 4 years, with a short dip in orders
due to Lampuga going into administration
in 2017. There are undoubtedly many happy
clients out there, however there are also
a number of dissatisfied ones who have
had maintenance issues with the boards.
Recently we received two boards from a wellknown
new electric surfboard manufacturer,
sell initially to the superyacht market as
they can charge inflated prices meaning
they can then invest in more R & D to
bring the items to the wider marketplace,
something that we feel very uncomfortable
with. At Superyacht Tenders and Toys we
make a huge effort to test ride, drive and
fly every item which is sold and this puts
us in the unique situation of being able to
offer clients the best advice without the
marketing noise.
Superyacht Tenders and Toys specialise
in new build outfitting and are involved
in supplying most of the notable current
builds with the full complement of toys
and leisure equipment. With this in mind
but on an easy and fully inflatable package
to assist with storage on board. Over the
years owners and charterers are becoming
more fitness aware, and some sports like
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUPS) offer a
good way to take exercise and enjoy being
on the water. Newer inventions like the
Schiller Water Bike and other non-motorised
toys take this further.
SAFETY
MATTERS
TENDER
IS THE
NIGHT
RYA Powerboat and Personal Watercraft Trainer Graham Stones enlightens us on the
key safety points when driving tenders. Yachts and their crews need to follow a simple set
of rules when driving a tender, this is of specific importance when driving at night or in
unfamiliar ports during a busy charter season
Transferring guests between their yacht and the shore in a
tender through a busy anchorage during a charter season
at night is probably one of the most important parts of a
deck crew’s responsibilities.
Tender driving and safety is an important part of the industry and
an area that can be weak – look around any port or anchorage
to see an alarming number of tenders zipping around with no
kill cords in use or exceeding speed limits. The lack of kill cord
usuage at major yacht shows has even been well documented on
social media in the past few years. Yachts should have a set of
operating standards for their tender with which crew should be
fully conversant. The procedures should include launching method,
number of crew on board for guest transfers; life jacket and
kill cord use policies, method of communication with the yacht.
Operating a tender safely and efficiently requires careful consideration
of a few simple things to make the crews’ life a lot safer and a
be reassuring experience for guests.
TRAINING
When your tender comes back from winter storage re-familiarise
all crew with the vessel, including handling characteristics, the
location and operation of all controls, switches, circuit breakers,
shut off points and extent and operation of the safety and firefighting
equipment.
Starting with new crew, discuss what training and experience they
have and support them with a familiarisation for your tender to
ensure they gain the level of competence required to professionally
and confidently helm it.
A first officer on a 68m yacht says, ‘With a new crew member I
discuss their experience. Then I check their ability on our 9.25m
twin screw chase boat. I give them a chance to see what the
boat can do, investigating speed through the water at tick over
and various manoeuvres on single engines, switching between
inside and outside engines when coming along side. I probe their
Col Regs knowledge. Once I’m happy with their knowledge they
12 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

start doing guest runs under supervision before progressing to
night runs in familiar areas. The RYA Powerboat Tender Operators
course covers most of the subjects covered in this article. It
builds on the boat handling skills covered at Level 2 to include
short-handed berthing, dealing with guests on a tender including
safety and comfort considerations and also includes night-time
navigation planning and execution from yacht to a shore-side
drop off point using purely electronic navigation.
SAFETY FIRST
The kill cord is there for a reason and should be used all the time,
without exception. It should be worn around the thigh. There are
potentially life-changing or fatal consequences of not wearing it.
Kill cord discipline must come from the top with repercussions
for not using it such as a warning or disciplinary to double watch
Most of these measures are common sense but we are probably
far stricter about them on board the mother ship than we are
in the tender. I visit 35-40 yachts a year for on board training
or inspections often being transferred myself in the tender and
although standards are definitely improving, there is often room
for improvement in the standard of tender operations.
An officer on a 47m yacht sums it up, “Safety is paramount,
especially with tenders. Crews need to be vigilant in order not to
damage the vessel, the local area/marine life or most importantly
people, whether that be crew, guests or the general public.
‘Slow is Pro’ is most definitely the ethos I adopt and instill in
my crew. Stay within your comfort zone, if you’re comfortable
with the operation of the tender, it will radiate and put your
passengers at ease.”
With a new crew member I discuss their experience, then I check their ability on our 9.25m
twin screw chase boat. I give them a chance to see what the boat can do, investigating
speed through the water at tick over and various manoeuvres on single engines
duties. Set the example. Lifejackets are useless unless worn.
Crew should wear them as they are often jumping on and off
tenders, swim platforms and jetties in a rush to get a line on
or help guests. Nowadays, lifejackets are available in a variety
of colours and styles, so they can match pretty much any crew
uniform. Guests should be offered lifejackets, a much easier sell,
if the crew wears one!
Ensure guests are seated and holding on in case of any unsighted
wash from other vessels at night. If the need arises for a bold
alteration of course to avoid a collision in the dark, it could
easily evolve into a man (person) overboard recovery if people are
standing. When was the last time your crew practiced a man
overboard recovery exercise on the tender? Can they get back
in a safe timely manner in the dark or rough conditions? Are all
your life saving appliances and equipment on the tender readily
accessible and easily used in the dark?
SAFETY FIRST MANNING AND COMMUNICATION
If possible, always operate with at least two crew members on
board, especially at night. This is critical for keeping a look out,
assisting with mooring lines, communications with the yacht
and looking after the guests while underway.
Before leaving the yacht ensure you carry out a radio check
with the bridge by vhf, briefing them of where you are heading
to and confirming additional means of contact, (mobile phone or
uhf radio). If your tender doesn’t have a tracker or AIS fitted,
share your location through WhatsApp or the RYA Safetrx app
with an officer on board so they can monitor where you are when
you depart in the dark.
NAVIGATING
If you are in an unfamiliar area consult pilot books, charts, ECDIS
and even Google Earth to check for local hazards, by-laws as well
as drop off or refuelling berths etc. Endeavour to do a ‘dry run’
to familiarise yourself. Use the tender’s chart plotter to enter
a simple waypoint route to navigate at night. Before departing,
place a waypoint alongside the yacht so you can easily find your
way straight back to the mothership amongst other similar looking
yachts if you are in a busy marina or port. Learn to recognise
your own yacht at night.
“There are horror stories most years of crew not properly looking
out, swimmers nearly or actually being hit, all of which is avoidable
with a bit more common sense and attention. Reduce speed in
anchorages, bad weather or sea state. I’d sooner crew take
twice as long to get somewhere and have disgruntled guests
than rush and have an accident that could have been avoided. The
last thing anyone wants to become is another statistic.”
TOP TIPS FOR TENDER DRIVING
Ensure all crew are familiar with the handling
characteristics of the tenders they are operating in all
conditions including MOB recovery
• Do they know where all the life-saving equipment and
switches etc are located?
• Always have two crew members on board with guests,
especially at night
• When you arrive somewhere new familiarise yourself
with the area
• Use the electronics on board to make your life easier
when ferrying to the drop off point or back
• Learn to recognise your own yacht in the dark
• Establish a means of communication with the bridge
and have a back-up
• Keep a good look out especially at night for other
tenders and unexpected wash
• Wear a life jacket, it’s useless unless worn
• Kill cords save lives – wear it
• Take a course: RYA Powerboat Tender Operator
Course visit rya.org.uk/go/wheresmynearest and
search for your nearest centre
• Read up: RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook G-108
LIFECORD
Lifecord was launched during the
Lifecord be connected to the boat’s
to the seatbelt warning in your car.
Should for any reason it become
GOOD
SPORTS
For the serious ski or wake enthusiast, the performance and wake of a dedicated towsports
boat is hard to beat. The classic skiboat features a shallow hull angle at the back of the boat.
Ski boats also usually position the engine in the centre of the boat. This combined with the
shallow deadrise allows the boat to run at a level attitude. The result is strong acceleration
and minimal wake size, allowing the boat to pull a skier and wakesurfer with ease
GREAT SUPPORT
SHADOW VESSELS ARE GAINING POPULARITY AMONGST SUPERYACHT OWNERS
AND ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO STAY BELOW THE 500GT MARK
Slim Bouricha founded Lynx Yachts in 2011 driven by his vision
of how a yacht should be designed and constructed, fine
tuning the engineering and build process. A businessman
with considerable experience in shipbuilding, Bouricha decided to
take advantage of the grand tradition of Dutch yacht building and
chose Nijkerk, in the Netherlands, as the Lynx Yachts headquarters.
This area, rich in skilled artisans, has contributed to the creation
of a team unsurpassed in their shipbuilding experience.
The state of the art shipyard boasts a temperature controlled
build hall and a 70m long quay allowing room for the construction
of up to three yachts simultaneously. Lynx Yachts President,
Slim Bouricha explains his rational behind the YXT concept “The
main reason for owning a shadow vessel is really to unleash the
potential of the main yacht and to considerably enhance the
owners or guests yachting experience. More and more, owners and
charterers are demanding a greater choice of toys and tenders.
The YXT concept will deliver more than the bigger yacht can, and
at a starting price just below €2M this is a great investment.
As for the operating expenses, a YXT will be very economical. The
variations are endless, whether we are carrying nautical tenders
or cars, buggies or motorcycles … even extra accommodation,
the shadow vessel just makes sense.”
Superyacht support vessels are increasing in popularity within
the industry whether they are used as a tender garage, extra
storage for an array of toys or as a floating helideck. Owners
are becoming more adventurous and demanding more from their
24 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

yachting experience. If they want a 12 metre
tender, a dive centre or even a submarine,
why would you compromise on the luxury of
the superyacht when a support vessel can
offer you the perfect solution?
When asked, Filippo Rossi Lynx Yachts Sales
& Marketing Manager says, “There is a lot
of curiosity around this topic and we are
receiving enquiries from all over the world.
First of all, the owners want to understand
the costs and the delivery time, but the main
issue is always the capacity to accommodate
a big rib or a limo tender on board. Usually
a 50-60 metre yacht doesn’t offer the
possibility to have a limo tender on board,
hence the shadow vessel is the right answer
to this kind of need.”
The necessity for larger tenders or indeed
a dedicated sport boat, multiple PWCs,
all terrain vehicles and more inflatables is
pushing the limits of the superyacht. The
support vessel is therefore the natural choice
and provides the increase in capability the
owner needs at a fraction of the cost of a
larger superyacht.
A dedicated support vessel will certainly
increase safety in terms of freeing up deck
space and allowing your crew to safely and
efficiently deploy the tenders and toys. It
also allows you to tailor the equipment you
load dependent on destinations, activities
and guests demands.
It is however important to remember these
vessels are not just the load carrying donkey.
Many owners demand the same level of luxury
for the support vessel as they have on the
mothership as they tend to spend a lot of
their free time during the day on and about
the support vessel. It is also important to
note that owners demand the same level
of crew quarters on the support vessel as
they have on the mothership – they want to
give both crew equal standing. Rossi from
Lynx Yachts mentions that “Every shadow
vessel is a different project, based on the
owner’s needs and wishes. If the client is
not interested in speed we always suggest
a steel hull. On the other hand, if the need
for speed and related weight of the yacht
is an issue, we suggest aluminum. Again,
it is a choice of the client and we build the
yacht around him.”
The aesthetics and technology going into
support vessel development is on a par with
YXT24 EVOLUTION
Due to be launched
Summer 2018
www.lynxyachts.com
THE VESSELS LEND THEMSELVES TO HAVING MUCH LARGER BEACH DECKS
MEANING A GREATER NUMBER OF GUESTS CAN JOIN THE FUN, LEARN NEW
WATERSPORTS AND PARENTS CAN RELAX AND BE CLOSER TO KIDS
the larger yachts, no expense is spared in
the interior finishing, it’s just the outside
deck areas that are designed for the storage
of the larger tenders and array of toys.
The vessels also lend themselves to having
much larger beach deck areas meaning a
greater number of guests can join the fun,
learn new watersports and parents can
relax and be closer to kids in the water.
These vessels can really take your yachting
experience to a whole new level.
A greater level of freedom is also granted
to the mothership. There is no need to
delay departures, waiting for the slides to
be deflated and stored or the PWCs and
tenders loaded and secured. The support
vessel can also race ahead to the next
anchorage, prepare, set up and be ready
for the owner and guests to arrive. The
support vessel can also accommodate other
yachting professionals. Rossi notes when
asked about crew accommodation on board,
“The vessels also cater for another category
of professionals, staff like for example a
Scuba Dive Master or a sailing instructor, or
a personal trainer. Those are professionals
that are neither guest nor crew, and with
a shadow vessel you can also host this kind
of people, who can increase the quantity of
activities you can offer family and guests,
without sacrificing the space or privacy on
board the main yacht.
Other advantages are that the mothership
can remain under the 500 GT mark, with
the support vessel taking over on storage,
they can be easily manoeuvred in smaller
locations or marinas and cruise in rougher
conditions whilst the mothership enjoys
quieter anchorages.
There is no doubt that owning a support
vessel is more economical and more
practicable than up-sizing to a larger
mothership: the flexibility it gives is endless.
The YXT Series from Lynx Yachts is a 20m
to 40m production range conceived with a
completely different philosophy and vision
in respect to traditional Lynx Yachts.
President Slim Bouricha strongly believes
in the use and diffusion of this type of
vessel; he does not consider the shadow
boat to be just a short lived trend but a
boat that every owner will sooner or later
consider useful. This explains the yard’s
investment in producing YXT yachts both
in series and ‘on spec’, conforming to very
precise choices in construction, transport,
material and operating costs. Following the
success of the first 24 metre model, the
yard has decided to build two additional
models: the first in the 20 metre range
was launched in summer 2016. The third
YXT of the series, the YXT24 Evolution, will
be launched in summer 2018.
In summary, Rossi says “The support vessel
range has been created and designed to
accompany the mothership, supplying
additional storage, large tender transport,
laundry and ironing, submersibles, water
toys, helicopters, etc., or as support vessels
for race boats.”
“They double, if not triple, the space available
for owners, allowing them to bring everything
they desire on vacation with them, including
their favourite car or helicopter. Depending
on the boat’s configuration and final use, the
YXT also means extra space for guests or
the possibility to include, just for example,
a professional galley, spa or gym.”
HINCKLEY DASHER, FULLY-ELECTRIC LUXURY TENDER
A new standard of excellence, Dasher pairs modern styling with super lightweight construction. From her carbon-epoxy composite
hull, to her handpainted, lightweight Artisanal Teak, every ounce of weight has been shaved and every curve sculpted.
Arriving not with a roar, but with our silent Whisper Drive propulsion system powered by dual BMW i3 lithium ion batteries, the shape
of the future is also the sound of silence. The result is a serenity not easily found. With zero emissions and zero time lost traveling to
the pump and back, it’s not what we’ve added to Dasher but what we’ve removed that you’ll love most.
LOCKED & LOADED
Tenders, tenders, tenders. There is no getting away from them on a superyacht, whether
they are to be used for watersports, getting to and from the shore, exploration or crew
duties. We can all agree they form a fundamental part of yachting. With the ever wider
range of manufacturers, types and designs they are an ever trendy part of yachting as the
tender side of the business has become better marketed Words: Josh Richardson
Increasingly we are finding that shipyards
and designers are more aware of them
and they are getting designed better
into the yachts storage and operations,
giving owners, guests and crew a better
experience. Many designers have preferred
brands to work with based off past history
and design in various manufacturers boats
from the outset, which then sets the box
dimensions (height, beam, length) and also
crane weights installed by the shipyard.
At SYTT we are regularly involved with new
concept yachts and assisting in getting
practical garages designed which fit the
owners’ brief. Key considerations being
ease of operations, cleaning, maintenance,
chocking and of course proposing suitable
boats for purpose ensuring boats are not
compromised by height for sea keeping and
deep V hulls, length for vessels being dry
and fast, and beam for loading capacity of
guests and equipment.
As ever, the earlier tenders can be designed
into garages during the build the better, and
this goes without saying and avoids tenders
having to be purchased to compromise.
However, it is not just sizes of tender
garages which are important, but also
the cranes, chocks and other seemingly
small details. Cranes and the lifting points
on tenders are more often than not the
single most important aspect of designing
a new yachts garage arrangement affecting
owners’ choice in the tenders they can
purchase. This is however something rarely
yacht captains and owners are involved in
as it is planned at the very early stages
of the build. With this in mind it makes a
huge difference whether the tender has a
single point lift, twin lifting points or the
more traditional 3 or 4-point lifting. Avoiding
spreader bars is fundamental to smooth
yacht operations, something we are regularly
having to fight with manufacturers against
to find ways around when proposed. The
lifting setup not only affects the stability
and launching conditions which are possible
to launch and recover tenders, but also
impacts significant aspects of the tender
design such as engine and drive choice,
limousine roof length, seating and more.
In tender builds lifting points need to be
aligned to bulkheads and the load spread
according to the boats centre of gravity.
These then need to be rated and certified
typically to 2.2 times the safe working load
for a static lift, to 6 or even 8 times the
load for carrying passengers.
When designers are working up a general
arrangement they need to decide how the
tenders will be launched and recovered.
At this time in the design there is a focus
into the layout of the space to meet their
requirements, and in particular the tender
storage. Whether this be a drive in tender
dock, beach club, roller launching up the
transom, side garages with davits aft, midships
or on the bow, winching onto deck
or simply lifting on deck with davits. All of
these need to be considered according to
the types of tenders and the conditions
and locations they will be used.
A system for one yacht launching tenders in
Antarctica in 40 knot winds is very different
than a typical Med yacht. Recently we
have been involved in a yacht who’s brief
was to be able to drive a tender onto the
yacht whilst at 10 knots. Transom rollers
can work very well here. Regardless of the
criteria of when and how the boats will be
launched and recovered the correct answer
is almost always the easiest. If boats can
quickly be attached to a crane or driven
onto rollers whilst the vessel is moving,
then this invariably represents the safest
option for the crew operating them and
the vessel avoiding trapped fingers in large
shackles and getting caught on lines from
cranes. Prolonged periods when people are
30 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

manhandling and shackling on lifting slings
represent an increased risk. For many
shipyards to try and design their tender
launching system in line with what would
be required for SOLAS tenders (Safety of
Life at Sea Rescue boats) is positive, as it
stipulates that boats need to be launched
and recovered quickly at sea.
With the garages and tenders designed
what’s left? Simply making the tenders
as easy to use as possible – logistics
involving fendering and securing. This is
something that most captains, crew and
owners are able to have more influence
on, as many items are purchased by them
after a vessel is built or during the latter
stages of a build. Below are some of the
key items to consider:
FENDERS
There are a number of options here, which
are largely driven by the size of the yacht
and budget. Whilst every manufacturer
will tell you they make the best, there are
some key differences in the manufacture
which are often price/quality based and
worth knowing.
INFLATABLE FENDERS
Light in weight, easily inflated and easy to
store. There are a huge variety of sizes
possible from manufacturers such as AERE,
Megafend, Fendequip and Henshaw. All can
be custom sized with fender socks either
in cotton or neoprene in a colour of choice.
Key differences between manufacturers is
the use of PVC or Hypalon material. PVC
typically offers fully hot air welded seams,
is lighter to handle, has a neater finish and
has less chance of leaking. Hypalon is a
heavier material that is commonly used on
inflatable RIB tubes. It has high strength
and abrasion qualities. Key factors as well
as the material the fenders are constructed
from are the use of stainless rotating
swivels used to attach lines to the yachts
allowing them to twist and also be able to
be used end to end, or on their sides, and
any internal wire frame for strengthening
for larger vessels over 100m.
FOAM CORE TRANSOM FENDERS
Used by yachts for fendering on the bathing
platform, transom areas and crew side
doors on areas where tenders are either
moored up to for long periods of time or
they are repeatedly coming alongside.
These high impact areas need sleek, good
looking, hardwearing fendering that blends
into the yachts design and having floating
sausage fenders is simply not appropriate.
These fenders can either be inflatable,
built in Drop Stitch fabric (the same as
used on inflatable paddleboards) which is
very rigid when inflated (up to 15 P.S.I) or
a rigid foam core fender. Choosing whether
to have a rigid fender or inflatable comes
down to how much storage the yacht has,
how hardwearing an area it is used on and
desired looks and feel. Many yachts go for
rigid fenders as guests can step on them
and feel secure without them moving and
they are typically looked at as the highest
quality option. Rigid transom fenders are
typically built in manageable sections around
1m long with a foam core which provides
some fendering ability, then wrapped in
neoprene and hypalon. Good transom
fenders transform yacht operations allowing
secure coming alongside and boarding for
guests, as well as the ability to berth
tenders alongside the vessel when not in
use reducing tender damage. A budget of
around €900 per metre section is realistic
for a quality application.
ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 31

TENDER MOORING WHIPS
When tenders are not required rather than
leaving them alongside Tender Mooring
Whips are used, and more rarely fixed
tender booms. Tender Whips are generally
seen as the best option and are a very
inexpensive piece of equipment (approx.
€2000 installed). Stainless flush mounts
can be installed on swim platforms, deck,
or rub rails, depending on the preferred
location of the tender. The poles come
in two pieces so can be easily stored on
board. The flush bases eliminate tripping
or catching of lines on board. Breast and
spring lines are to be used to hold the
tender in place and stop them surging
forward or aft. Whips are available for
tenders of all sizes, currently up to 22,000
kg! Stainless fittings, high quality lines
and cleats, along with painted finishes are
all recommended. Due to the low cost of
these it is generally recommended to go
for a higher specification whip, which can
take larger loads than expected.
CARBON TENDER FENDERS
These are rigid fenders, often called Pillar
Fenders which mount on the yachts transom,
so a tender can berth alongside. Due to
the additional height they provide over the
low-lying foam core transom fenders these
are a better way of securing a tender, as
it stops it riding over the transom in a
swell. On these the rubbing strake of a
tender will rise up and down the pillar. They
are look good and highly functional. When
made in carbon they are easy to handle,
light - as low as 12kg per piece and are
removable so only deployed when a yacht
is at anchor.
Options are available in aluminium, carbon,
with lights, handles, folding, tilting with
tender loads and are easily handled and
moved. Having provided these for many
yachts over a number of years there was
a growing feeling that no-one was serving
the yachts needs in terms of functionality
and price point. So, SYTT now design and
build their own lightweight carbon range
which suits all tender sizes. A budget of
€20,000 for a 70m yacht would be a good
starting point for a good quality option.
FENDER HOOKS
Last item to mention is fender hooks,
which are on almost every large yacht
to hold fenders, or whips hanging over
the side of the vessel. At around €1000
per hook these are well worth a mention.
These are typically custom handcrafted to
securely fit the rail or bulwark profile of
the superyacht and hardware configured
to its needs.
The core structure for these fender hooks
and special purpose hooks is 316 stainlesssteel.
The coverings are stitched together
for a richly detailed look. Hardware choices
include thread less fairleads, custom
D-rings, box rings, cam cleats, custom
sized thread less spreader bars and much
more Bespoke special hooks such as rod or
Tender Mooring Whip holders also available.
THE
TOY
CHEST
TOYS PLAY A BIG PART OF THE
CHARTER EXPERIENCE. MORE
AND MORE CHARTER BROKERS
ARE SEEING CLIENTS MAKE
THEIR YACHT SELECTION BASED
ON WHAT PLAY THINGS ARE
CARRIED ON BOARD THEIR
YACHT FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Ask any charter guest or prospective guest
about their voyage aboard a superyacht and
it is a fair bet that the word ‘toys’ will be
used in the first sentence or two. Water toys, it
seems, are increasingly important when it comes to
differentiating one charter yacht from another. With
great advancements in luxury water toys over the past
few years, yacht owners and charter guests alike have
come to expect a vast array of exciting watercraft and
adrenaline-pumping toys to accompany and enhance
their stay on board. With ever changing technologies,
knowing what to purchase and how to operate and
maintain these additions is certainly becoming a full
time job for many crews and those tasked with stocking
the yacht with the latest additions.
If ever superyacht toys got good coverage recently
it was at the hands of BBC television. Viewers of the
UK’s best-watched TV series of 2017 will have seen
the Triton submarine carried aboard Alucia where it was
used for over 500 hours of documentary filming by the
Blue Planet production team. The yacht undoubtedly
benefited from just that one mission, but the fact that
our oceans benefited from the millions of people
around the world who were educated, inspired
and connected with the sea via a superyacht
water toy is something the industry can be
proud to be a part of.
toys is important, even more so is the ability for the
crew to show how to use the toys correctly and make
the most fun out of each experience.”
This knowledge is backed up by the team at Ocean
Premium who are specialists in Toys rental throughout
the Mediterranean, “Most successful charter yachts
will have an excellent selection of toys onboard. They are
seen by the crew as crucial to meeting and surpassing
the guests’ high expectations for enjoyment.”
Tamsin Priestley the Director Yacht Charter at Y.CO is
in no doubt that toys are important and cites the 66.4
metre Okto from ISA as a perfect example to illustrate
her point. “She was built to the unique specification
of an experienced yachtsman,” says Tamsin. “A four
tender garage was specifically included to house an
extensive array of toys to keep the guests and the
Owner’s family active. Water toys are an integral part
of the Okto experience.”
Benoit Tréguilly of BIC Sport says, “For the last five
years, Stand Up Paddles have been the best sellers
in our product ranges. Guests can use these boards,
to go cruising around the boat, discover the coastline
and surf the waves close by the beach. We have guests
who like to use them to keep fit and practice yoga while
using them and almost every child we know loves to
dive into the water from a nice stable platform such
is the solidity of our board. With our products the
superyacht becomes the platform from where guests
practice many different activities, have fun and get
fit. Guests share activities and have fun with their
friends, their children, their family without engine noise
or pollution.”
Gabriella Richardson is a Retail Charter Broker with
chartering. She says, “A yacht charter group is
often made up of varying age groups; friends, family,
children, grandparents and it is important to keep
everyone entertained. A yacht’s toy selection is an
essential tool for the crew to engage the guests and
offer activities in line with each person’s ability and
preferences. Younger guests might need to let off
steam for hours each day and other charter guests
will return home bursting with the fact they’ve learnt
a new skill. Those who are not strong swimmers might
appreciate assistance in making the experience easier
and the more adventurous guests will often want a
shot at the latest water sports gimmick, no matter
how hard they land trying. As much as the variety of
She believes that a good selection of toys on board is
absolutely essential for family charters. She expounds
the virtues of the crew on board RoMa who, she says,
“will ensure that all activities are carried out to the
highest of safety standards, ensuring parents can relax
on board in the knowledge that their children are having
the time of their lives.” She adds,“In a world where
people are becoming increasingly active, adventurous
and experience-focussed, a selection of toys such as
that on board RoMa truly offers a unique opportunity.
Learning a new skill such as diving and being able to
take this with you throughout your life leaves a lasting
impression and creates an unforgettable experience
for those who charter RoMa.”
However, even if at first the guests are not initially so
crazy about toys Ocean Premium says, “A morning with
our instructor testing our toys will turn him or her into
an instant enthusiast.”
Nicola Breymaier at Fraser likes to promote the 83
metre Here Comes The Sun as a successful charter
yacht carrying a multitudinous choice of water toys.
She says,“If a yacht has a wake boat, then it’s the
wake boat. Not only for towing, skiing and wakeboarding,
these boats are designed to create a large clean wake
to enable easy wake surfing with no need for a tow line.
The boat doesn’t have to go fast to make the wave
(around 10 knots), so there are no high speed wipeouts
to worry about; a learner can surf very close to the
boat in perfect safety and even interact with people
sitting in the boat as they surf. Offering a real sense
of achievement, guests aged 7 to 70 have learned and
loved this activity time and time again.”
“The latest, hottest toy right now is the yacht Blob
Bounce.” So says Jacqui Lockhart, a Retail Charter
Broker with Camper & Nicholsons in Monaco. “It is,”
she says, “new to the market right now but will surely
be the next hottest toy. The Jetpack and flyboard are
a big attraction but many guests still like the freedom
to use waverunners and we are lucky that many of our
yachts are RYA Centres for training guests to use
the yacht’s personal watercraft. Nicola Breymaier with
Fraser believes, “It’s all about the Flyboard. This is the
setup that uses the jet from a PWC to allow the user
to hover in the air. Using a Flyboard requires quite
a high skill level and guests need to be trained by a
crewmember, but it offers a fantastic photo op when
they get it right (and when they don’t)!”
When it comes to these, Mako Boardsports it seems,
have got the answer. Combining the power of a
traditional watercraft with elements taken from the
surf and wakeboarding world. Alexander Chittock from
Mako Board Sports tells us,“The Mako Slingshot is
the next generation jetboard - a quick and agile carbon
fibre surfboard, complete with the right combination of
sophisticated technology and sleek design aesthetic. Built
from an insatiable thirst for the ultimate of experiences
to escape the everyday, the Mako Slingshot is the must
have toy for those that love being out on the water.
Easy to ride, easy to stow, and with excellent customer
service and support, it’s easy to own.”
For guests who want to stay in the water rather than
ride over the top, there is the SeaBob, a small machine
that tows you through the water, underwater and gives
a great new dimension to snorkelling. The latest version
of these is much lighter and more manageable than the
original, allowing guests to use them without assistance
and even take them to the beach. For Gabriella Richardson
with Camper & Nicholsons, it is the jetsurf that is the
new innovative product that is currently proving very
popular, and RoMa has one on board for guests to use.
She says, “Half jet-ski, half wakeboard, the jetsurf is
perfect for adrenaline seekers and was developed by a
team of automotive Formula 1 engineers. Capable of
reaching a top speed of 55 km/ hour, the jetsurf has
gained an incredible amount of momentum worldwide,
and international competitions have developed.”
Charter Broker Nicola Breymaier with Fraser thinks
the trend is moving away from the motorised toys,
and is probably moving more towards bigger and better
inflatable creations such as towers, or the Jungle Joe
2. She comments, “Relatively simple for crew to set
up and contrary to the original inflatable slide that
needed to be attached to the upper
deck of a yacht, these simply float off
the back of the swim platform neatly
out of the way. There is the ‘Blob’ the
inflatable catapult toy and inflatable climbing
walls, as well as long inflatable splash mats that offer
hours of fun to energised kids; big and small. For guests
less inclined to get into the water or who might be
a little daunted in the face of the open ocean at the
stern of a yacht, these inflatable kingdoms can act as
a soft stepping stone to the big blue. Some guests
even prefer to wait until the kids are done so they can
go and sit in the shady spot under the slide and enjoy
a cocktail or two!”
Stacy Moss with Camper & Nicholsons, Fort Lauderdale
states that while the core toys such as SeaBobs,
paddleboards, towable inflatables and snorkeling equipment
will always be popular and will always need to be readily
available the demands on storage on board is becoming
a determining factor. As the demand for larger toys
increases, storage is becoming more and more important.
NAUTIBUOY MARINE
NautiBuoy Marine specialises in a modular system of inflatable platforms
and docks. One of the most popular combinations are two platforms
that can be connected in a T-Shape configuration to create the perfect
Jet ski dock. With each platform having 4 x 40 litre ballast bags on
the underside, the Jet ski dock has 8 ballast bags in total making it
incredibly stable. As it is in two sections, it is easy to store and can also
be configured as an L-shape tender bay, a long run way or with the
platforms side by side to make a large area for relaxation. With the New
modular addition, the C-Dock for Seabobs, the ideal watersports centre is
quick and easy to achieve, protecting the toys and the yacht and making
the toys easy to access for guests and crew.
For more details Tel: +44 (0)1803 863233
The team at Ocean Premium says, “The entire Seabob
range will always be popular but recently we’ve seen a
demand for the Radinn G2X electric powerboard which
is perfect for the thrill seekers on board and we’re
looking forward to introducing the Zapata Flyride this
season as well.”
Jacqui Lockhart in Monaco agrees,“Storage space is often
a problem and the choice of toys is decided according
to the owner’s preferences. Only the largest yachts
can accommodate the largest selection of toys so we
are lucky to be able to rent all the latest toys via some
great suppliers located in strategic charter locations.”
Gabriella Richardson believes that, larger toys can often
be difficult to carry due to space limitations, but can
be rented on a daily basis during a charter. These can
include aviation equipment, helicopters, sea ray planes,
If you speak Danish or Dutch you will know the word for
a canoe is an Onak. What you might not know is that
when spelled backwards Onak is the barnd name of an
innovative and foldable origami canoe. Nele Braux at
Onak tells us, “Because of its innovative new composite
material, the boat is extremely durable, very sturdy,
fast and lightweight. This combined with its sleek
design makes it the perfect additional toy on bigger
boats.” The toy is catching on fast mostly because
of the ease of storing it on board. It’s easy to set-up
taking just 15 minutes and once afloat it is very swift
when paddling across the surface. Weighing just 17
kg, it can carry 250kg meaning that about 3 people
or 2 people with luggage can be safely transported.
As to which toy gets used each and every charter,
Tamsin Priestley suggests, “For family charters, it is
always the trampoline, Aquaguide jungle gym, floating
island and runway that provide huge fun and copious
amounts of exercise for everyone. Tired children and
happy parents go a long way towards making one
charter a success and bringing back the guests for
a second round.”
16kg these featherweights become possible with the clever usage
of carbon fibre material. Without any question the DUO is by far the
most elegant DPV ever made. This unique scooter includes basically
two scooters in one body – double thrust, no torque and high
redundancy by two motors.
Gabriella Richardson says, “The inflatable slide is
extremely popular amongst both adults and children
alike. Stacy Moss believes it varies from group to group.
She says, “Slides are extremely popular along with a
good selection of inflatable towable toys. Illusion V
also has an inflatable Jetski Dock which is the perfect
mooring for the 2 Jetskis. This floating, inflatable dock
makes getting on and off the Jetskis easily accessible
and hassle free. With its own side-boarding ladder, it
makes a great swim platform as well.”
Stacy promotes Illusion V as her favourite telling us,
“Snuba equipment which allows you to explore the
underwater world at greater depths than snorkeling.
Breathing through a simple regulator while your air supply
floats on the surface allows you to stay submerged
for longer and explore with greater detail. Somewhere
in between Scuba diving and snorkeling, Snuba requires
no license or qualification to use.
Gabriella Richardson says RoMa is the yacht for those
who love underwater experiences. She says the yacht is
unique in the sense that she is the first PADI Superyacht
Scuba Centre ever to be featured on a charter yacht.
The on board PADI dive school offers dive courses and
supervised recreational dive activities with the highest
of safety standards. Her on board PADI school makes
her the perfect charter yacht for families with children
looking to become a qualified diver whilst enjoying the
holiday of a lifetime. RoMa has a PADI Superyacht dive
boat, 9 full dive sets, a Bauer dive compressor, and
emergency oxygen generator on board.”
HANDPLANES
Solid hardwoods and neoprene
www.flotsamjetsamhandplanes.co.uk
Captain Janusz Walkinski of RoMa, is a PADI Master
Scuba Diving Trainer, and four other crew members are
also qualified PADI dive masters. The yacht’s crew really
are full of adventure, and this coupled with her extensive
selection of toys on board, makes her perfect for families
seeking fun and an experience they will never forget. The
toy list includes the ever more popular jetsurf, flyboard,
2 3-person jet-skis, a Yamaha stand up waverunner, 3
seabobs and a 27m water slide which can be attached
to the side of the yacht when at anchor. To top it off,
RoMa is a RYA PWC Certified Training Centre which
means a jet-ski licence can be issued for full use and
enjoyment of the toys.”
More underwater fun can be had using a device invented by
José Escaño Roepstorff. Blurring the boundary between
snorkelling and scuba diving the Peter Diving unit devised
by José Escaño Roepstorff is an ideal underwater fun
solution for yachts. Think of it as a system for multiuser
diving that supplies air from the surface for a safe,
easy and comfortable diving experience without the
need for divers to carry tanks on their backs or wear
cumbersome buoyancy jackets or BCDs. A carbon fibre
air filled tank is towed behind the swimmers which makes
it much more lightweight and increases the amount
of air available to the divers by 50%. This means the
crew has an easier time manouvering the kit while the
guests are entertained for longer in the safest and
easiest way of diving.
José Escaño Roepstorff says “It makes the divemaster’s
life much easier; they have much less equipment to
maintain and to keep on board. Beginners can try diving
for the first time without having to have lengthy briefings
regarding BCDs and carrying heavy tanks on their backs.
Also the crew can easily use the PETER Diving
System for regular prop or hull maintenance
or emergencies such as fouled props or
stuck anchors. The float and tank
can even stay on board so that
the diver is still tethered to
the boat while they work.
Triton has a rigorous and extensive development
programme with several projects currently under
development and in build. Of these it will deliver this
year, Project Neptune, the result of a close collaboration
with the prestigious Aston Martin Design team. Achingly
beautiful, with increased performance and a luxury interior
this Special Edition scheduled to debut at the Monaco
Yacht Show in September will set new standards in the
luxury submersible sector.
As with any asset, the individual owner’s intended use of a
yacht, car, aircraft or property determines the additional
equipment it is outfitted with. While some yachts are
designed as a retreat and for the relaxation of the owner,
their family and guests, others are dedicated platforms
for exploration, adventure and active participation in
a variety of activities. This alone demonstrates the
wonderful versatility of yachts, and the toys they carry
which are as diverse as the individuals that own them.
The quest to own bigger and better toys continues.
Ashore the retail chain selling toys to children, might
be in financial trouble but at sea the opposite seems
to be very true and when it comes to superyachts it is
very much a case of Toys R Us.
FREESTYLE SLIDES
base heights ranging from 4-9 metres and can be adjusted up to 1.5
meters higher than the base height. The FLEX slide is flag blue and
BETTER CONNECTED
The NautiBuoy Marine Platform was designed and created by two ex-superyacht crew,
out of the frustration felt whilst working on medium to large motor and sailing yachts
74 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

NautiBuoy platforms first won recognition after being
awarded a Gold category prize in the prestigious
DAME Awards at METS in 2015. A gap in the market
was spotted for a multi-functional, easy to use, leisure
and maintenance platform that can be linked together
in any configuration.
From the outset the founders wanted to create a range
of inflatable tools with a wide range of uses with additional
accessories to enhance capability. The platforms are seen
as an extension to the yacht, so a faux teak finish was
added to fit in with the style and lines of any yacht. They
are also made incredibly stable due to the unique ballast
system that can be manually emptied before retrieval.
Due to the modular nature of the
platforms, instead of having one large
cumbersome piece of equipment that
is difficult to handle and store, the
platforms are quick to inflate and deflate
(all in under 5 minutes) and can be
retrieved and stored with short notice,
which comes in very handy when the
boss wants to move quickly.
For the superyachts and larger
vessels, the platforms can be linked together in endless
configurations, allowing crew to create beach clubs, jet
ski docks, tender bays, and long runways and walk ways.
The Owners, Captains and yacht crew can customise
their own layouts and offer different shapes depending
on the activity.
These configurations make the perfect watersports station
helping protect the yacht from watersports activity as
well as the toys themselves. They make the toys more
accessible for the users and allow crew to offer even
better hospitality at water level.
NautiBuoys are truly
amazing! I have been able
to create an additional 80
foot beach club/marina!
Very exciting!!
Owner, M/Y OceanClub
The smaller yachts also benefit from the platforms as they
effectively allow them to have a much more cost effective
yacht extension. Phillip Ashworth, a 40ft Atlantis owner
had the following to say about his new 675 inflatable
platform- “It’s nearly 8 square metres of entertaining
space and for the whole summer it was full of ladies or
children. It is a serious bit of boating brilliance that added
an invaluable amount of space and fun.”
In the relentless pursuit for the perfect solution, the
founders designed the platforms to have the ability to
transform from a guest ready leisure platform into a solid
inflatable maintenance tool. Simply add the lightweight,
non-skid fitted cover for protection and your crew can easily
clean, varnish, paint and polish and have
the hull of the yacht looking immaculate.
They can even still link together if needed
for those larger yard jobs.
The smallest platform can be inflated and
launched in under two minutes and with
the addition of suction cups with cleats,
hose holders and collapsible buckets with
lids that attach to the platforms, crew
can work around the topsides easily.
Gone are the days of having to detail
the tender after a full topside wash down. Specifically
designed with soft loops and edges, the platforms can
sit alongside your vessel for days without you having to
worry about any damage.
The latest addition to the modular range is the New
C-Dock, compatible with F5, F5S and F5SR Seabobs.
These are a drive-in-drive-out solution that prevents the
repetitive lifting in and out of Seabobs from the water.
The Seabobs remain in the water whist being safe, secure
and protected. They can be used on their own, connected
together or connected to the NautiBuoy platforms.
One of the popular trends for charterers is to charter
yachts with ‘beach clubs’ on the stern. Those yachts
without the actual onboard space can still create this
facility with the addition of the NautiBuoy platforms. MY
Ocean Club, who have 12 platforms onboard, make use
of the versatility and change the configurations to suit
their requirements on a day to day basis.
The main ancillary toys of the vessel such as Jet Skis
and Seabobs, can now all be protected together in one
watersports station, that’s easy to access and right
there on the water, ready to go.
WAKEY
WAKEY
THE WET AND WILD COUSIN OF SKATEBOARDING,
WATERSKIING AND SURFING, WAKEBOARDING IS ONE
OF THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS IN THE WORLD
Wakeboarding like any watersport is
all about getting out on the water
and having fun. Arguably the public
face of wakeboarding is one of a young teen
dressed in oversized clothing doing nigh on
impossible flips off a colossal wake, however
the reality is that wakeboarding can be enjoyed
by anyone willing to give it a try regardless
of age or sporting experience, who wants to
enjoy the thrill and exhilaration of skimming
over the water whether at sea or on a lake!
Most people think and
assume that wakeboarding
was invented in the U.S,
but actually it was a
group from New Zealand
in the late ‘70s who first
started experimenting with
shortened surf boards
being towed by a boat. Fast
forward to the mid ‘80s in
the U.S and the sport now
known as skurfing is gaining
popularity, then throughout
the ‘90s with advancements in board and
boat design wakeboarding was brought to the
mainstream, with large sponsors, world and
national championships and televised events
across the world.
Today wakeboarding is one of the fastest growing
watersports enjoyed at all levels not only behind
a boat but on the recently and more accessible
format of the cable tow where an overhead
cable pulls the rider across the water.
OK, to get started, whilst there are specifically
designed boats that produce a perfectly shaped
wake for tricks and have a higher towing point
THE LIST OF TRICKS IS
LITERALLY ENDLESS WITH
NEW MANOEUVRES BEING
INVENTED ALL THE TIME
FROM, 180 DEGREE JUMPS TO
1080 DEGREE SPINS, BACK
FLIPS TO DOUBLE BACK FLIPS
mounted on a tower to achieve better air time.
The fact is that any boat will suffice during
the learning period. Plus, being able to pick
up entry level equipment for the whole family
for around €300 makes it very accessible.
Initially the boat speed is kept to a minimum,
around 31kph and the rope around 16m
obviously some sort of lesson is best at one
of the many dedicated wakeboard clubs and
schools throughout Europe such as ours in
Cordoba, but if you have
ever surfed, snowboarded,
skateboarded or even
waterskied you will have
a headstart. Be sure to
be patient, stay relaxed
and try not to stand too
quickly and let the boat
do the work bringing you
up and out of the water,
automatically you’ll work
out which leg you need
to put forward left being
(regular) or right (goofy).
So from there on the sky is really the limit!
Progress from gentle wakecrossings to small
jumps using the peak of the wake as a ramp.
The list of tricks is literally endless with new
manoeuvres being invented all the time from,
180 degree jumps to 1080 degree spins, back
flips to double back flips all being tweaked to
include board grabs back landings and a host
of other mind boggling tricks that defy gravity!
So get out there give this highly addictive
sport a go and above all have fun!
Objects of Desire
Chris-Craft Barrelback
Since the beginning, Christopher Smith crafted the kind of boats
that dreams are made of. Chris-Craft boats became the cultural
icons that gave people a new freedom to explore the clear waters
of local lakes and distant shores. More than any other brand at the
time, they were responsible for America’s romance with boats,
and ultimately, for redefining boating pleasure for generations of
people around the world.
One of the most sought after models still to this day is the 1941
Barrelback. The world was embroiled in the beginnings of World
War II and luxury items were rare. It wouldn’t be until the 1950s
that discretionary income would return, and Chris-Craft would
become the boat of means. Stars such as Dean Martin, Katharine
Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis where readily identified with the
Chris-Craft and the fashionable boating culture in post-war years.
