Tips for relocating to Australia with your family
Introduction
Moving house can be stressful at the best of times – and even more so when the house
happens to be on the other side of the world and you have to move yourself, your family and
your belongings to a new country. Here are a few tips to bear in mind when moving with your
family to Australia.
Choose where to live
It may be that your new home – at least in terms of geographic area – will be determined by
factors such as a job move. However, if you have free choice in the matter, you’ll want to put
time into choosing a location that suits not only your needs, but also your personality and
lifestyle.
There can be a surprising difference in attitudes and culture between different Australian cities,
and you need to be sure that you’ll feel at home in your new home. Sydney, Melbourne and
Brisbane, for example, have in recent years all established themselves as buzzing metropolitan
hotspots, while Adelaide is often described as being like a big country town. The capital,
Canberra, is a planned city with a relatively small population, many of whom work or contract
for the national government.
Take the time to find a location that really matches what you and your family need from your
new home
Research your destination
Australia’s society and culture are similar, but certainly not identical, to the UK’s. The
practicalities, such as the local property market, transportation, schools and amenities, will all
need to be researched, but it’s also important to research factors such as the weather,
economy and cultural norms of not just the country as a whole, but the city and even
neighbourhood where you’ll be living or working.
Fortunately there are plenty of great online resources to help with this, many of them written
by British expats.

Dont leave financial matters to chance
Moving from the UK to Australia is expensive, and your financial plans need to take absolutely
everything into account, factoring in the costs of obtaining visas, as well as moving you, your
family and your belongings to the other side of the world.
It’s also important to understand what your finances will look like once you’re living in
Australia. Factors such as property and rental prices, as well as day-to-day living costs like food
and retail prices, the costs of public transport or running a car, can vary quite significantly
between different Australian locations; websites like Numbeo can be useful in researching
relative costs of living in various cities.
As a final point, remember to look into your tax liabilities in both Australia and the UK, if
applicable, as this may influence factors such as where you choose to hold savings and
investment accounts.
Keep your children involved
If you have children, be sure to involve them as fully as possible in planning and arranging every
step of your move. Children can be particularly sensitive to a house move – never mind a lifechanging
relocation to the other side of the world. Asking for (and, perhaps more importantly,
listening to) their opinions and preferences can be a great way to keep them feeling engaged
and positive throughout the process. That way, the move is something in which they are
actively participating, rather than something that’s being imposed upon them.
To help when moving with children, take a look at our list of children’s books about moving
house to help them understand what’s going on.
Decide what you need to take with you
Be practical – even ruthless – about what you need to take with you when you move. Moving
large items of furniture or dozens of boxes of ornaments, books, clothes, toys etc. from the UK
to Australia can be an expensive business, and in some cases it makes more sense to buy new
items in Australia once you get there. In the months and weeks prior to your move you should
make efforts to go through and, where appropriate, thin out your belongings. Decide what can
stay (for example, if you intend to let out your current property rather than selling up), what
can be sold, what can be donated to charity, and what you want to take with you.

Always use an experienced international removals firm
Once you have decided what belongings are coming to Australia with you, look for a company
with solid experience of international removals – this will ensure they not only understand the
practicalities and logistics of the job, but are also fully aware of Australian customs and import
regulations (see below).
It’s a good idea to check online for reviews and recommendations from previous customers,
and always ensure the company belongs to an established and reputable trade association,
such as the British Association of Removers (BAR) Overseas Group.
Be aware of customs and import restrictions
When transporting your family’s belongings to Australia, it’s important to be aware of any
import taxes, customs fees or duties for which you may be liable – your removals firm should
be able to provide some guidance here. You should also remember that Australia has strict
border controls with regard to certain materials. For example, natural fibres such as wicker and
bamboo are prohibited, and customs officials may require other items to be treated or
fumigated to eliminate the risk of introducing exotic diseases or pests; you will be liable for any
charges imposed by Australian quarantine inspectors.
Be aware that this doesn’t just apply to your transported belongings – when you travel to
Australia you will also have to declare whether you are carrying plant material, animal products
or certain foods. Failing to comply with import rules can result in consequences ranging from
on-the-spot penalties to prison sentences and hefty fines.
Consider insuring your belongings in transit
When discussing your move with international removals firms, be sure to ask whether any
protection or insurance for breakage or loss is included in their base price, and whether
additional insurance is offered as an optional extra.
Removals firms often offer only limited liability cover (paying up to a certain pound value per
item for loss or damage) and in some cases – particularly if you are transporting high-value
furniture items or collectables – it is a good idea to take out marine insurance or similar
international removals insurance in case anything goes wrong. If you do decide to take out
insurance, remember to shop around for the best deal.
Bringing your pet to Australia

If you own a pet, there are certain realities you’ll have to face when planning your move.
Moving a pet from the UK to Australia can be costly – we’re talking thousands of pounds, rather
than hundreds. The quarantine fee alone starts out at $2,000 (around £1,200).
The good news is that in 2013 Australia relaxed its quarantine laws, meaning that – providing
you have followed the correct procedures and obtained an import permit – your pet will usually
only need to spend ten days in quarantine, rather than the previous thirty. The Department of
Agriculture and Water Resources website should be your first stop to learn what to expect.
Be prepared for Australias climate
In Britain most people are aware that Australia is a bit warmer than the UK, but many don’t
appreciate quite how substantial the difference is. While climates vary between different parts
of Australia, the national average summer temperature is around 30°C, which is about twice as
high as the UK’s summer average.
Always bear in mind exactly how extreme Australia’s climate is in comparison to the UK, and
make appropriate plans to deal with that to ensure your family’s comfort and safety. Also
remember that the seasons are flipped in the southern hemisphere – if you get on the plane in
the middle of the British winter, you’ll be arriving down under at the height of the Australian
summer!
MOVING INTERSTATE IN AUSTRALIA
The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that around 43% of Australians have moved home
in the last five years and moving interstate is a decision many Australians will make at some
point in their lives. Whether you’re moving for work or for lifestyle, Australia’s states are varied
and so too are their moving challenges. Here are some tips on moving interstate in Australia.
Quarantine laws
Australia has some of the strictest quarantine laws in the world, and these apply when moving
interstate. We recommend leaving behind things like plants, animal products and agricultural
equipment which may contain contaminants and soil. For more information on the rules and
regulations of each state, check out the Australian Government’s interstate quarantine website
here.
Consider what you need

Moving interstate means having to pack and sort through all of your belongings and it’s a great
time to consider what you really need in your new home. Doing this will cut down on moving
costs and it can also help to provide much needed items to those who need them most. At
Grace, we have established a partnership with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We’ll pick up
items you no longer need and donate them as part of our initiative to make a difference in the
community.
Getting to your new home
Packing up the car and driving interstate might seem like the best way to get everything across
the border and to your new home, but there are challenges you need to consider. Take into
consideration the miles you will clock up on your car by driving long distances as well as the
effect on any pets you’ll have with you. Consider using the experts for your pet and vehicle
relocation. Grace offers pet and vehicle relocation services so you don’t have to worry about it
yourself. We can discuss the best transportation options to suit your needs.
Selecting the right removalist
Choosing to move house on your own can seem like the cheapest option at first, but once you
begin to break down what’s involved in the entire process, things start to add up. Much
relocation requires specialised services of experts in a few different fields, from packing and
storage to delivery and moving insurance. A removalist who can cover all of these processes
through interconnected services provides a more coherent experience. Whether you’re
MOVING WITH KIDS
Everyone knows that moving houses is a stressful and chaotic time. Even the smoothest of
moves only go that way because of countless hours of planning and headaches making sure
everything goes off without a hitch. Now, when you add kids into the equation the outcome
becomes ten times as hard to pull off. Plus, you have to think about if they’ll need to move
schools and what to do about childcare on top of everything else.

Balancing the little ones’ needs with the stresses of a move can be difficult, but it doesn’t have
to be a nightmare. Here we’ve prepared 10 tips we believe are useful for helping get your tiny
troop from one home to another in one piece.
‣ Have a family meeting
We often don’t remember just how slighted and uncomfortable we’d feel at the slightest
change as children. As adults we get used to change. But if you ever moved, or were faced with
the prospect of moving as a child, you might remember a bubbling sense of panic. Kid’s worlds
are small. The prospect of being pried from their friends and familiar surroundings is scary,
even if you’re only moving a few numbers down the road. Ignoring these feelings is a quick way
to make your moving experience a whole lot worse. Confront the problem by involving your
kids in the process as early as possible. You may find the kids getting excited rather than scared
if you talk about the move openly and involve them in the planning.
‣ Challenge your kids with a research project
Another great way to turn nerves to excitement is to turn the unknown into something to look
forward to. Get them to do some research online for fun things to do when you get to your new
area. Are there any pools nearby? Bowling alleys? Playgrounds? Help them find things they can
get excited about and if it’s practical you could even take them to explore the new area
together.
‣ De-clutter
Downsising can help to make your moving day much smoother. it’s hard to conquer our inner
hoarder with fresh waves of presents hitting your home every Christmas and birthday. When
you add in all the things your kids beg for in-between, families accumulate clutter fast. Try to
have hard and fast rules for what comes with you and what gets thrown out. Chances are, if
you or your kids haven’t touched it in 12 months, it doesn’t need to come with you.
‣ Ask for help when you need it
No matter how great a parent you are or how ready you feel you are to tear through the
packing and cleaning while wrangling the kids, it’s never that simple. People close to you will
offer to help at some point, accept it. Even if it’s just watching the kids for a few hours or
helping clean up a bit, it will save you hours of stress. If no one offers, ask. No one is an island
and you should take the pressure off where you can.
‣ Pack an essentials box and let the kids do the same

When it comes to unpacking there are two choices: day and professional packers. When you
have professionals like Kyle bay removals unpack your belongings at the other end the move
can be over almost as quickly as it began. However, everyone has a budget and it’s important to
stick to it. if you plan on day unpacking, make sure you have a box with everything you’ll need
for the first week as unpacking procrastination is as unavoidable as taxes.
Having the kids do this too can help involve them in the moving process. If you want to give it a
fun holiday feel, have them pack their favorite toys into their suitcase, or give them a plain box
they can decorate.
‣ Keep packed boxes out of sight
It’s a good idea to keep any packed boxes in a spare room, if there is one, away from the
children. This not only stops the house from being full of hazards but also protects your wellorganised
boxes from little hands.
‣ Hire a professional moving company
Even if you’ve followed the list up until now, there’s still likely to be stress on moving day, and
the kids will feel it too. by bringing in the professionals at kyle bay removals & storage you can
focus on easing the little ones into the new neighborhood while we take care of the heavy
lifting.
‣ Take the kids out of the mix
Even with professionals handling most the work on the day, it can still get hectic. if there’s
family available to watch the kids or you can do the move while they’re at school, take
advantage of it. let them leave home from one house and come home to the new one without
having to deal with the stress and upheaval in between.
‣ Priorities the kids rooms
If you want a truly seamless transition, having the kids’ rooms ready when they get home is a
great way to go. The comfort they’ll find in having their favorite toys and possessions where
they can find them will help them settle in and take a load off your shoulders. Decorate the new
room as closely as possible to the old one to keep things familiar, or get them involved in
choosing a new decorative scheme if they’re ready for a change.

‣ Stick to your routine
Routine means normality, and sticking to your usual routines can help make the kids feel right
at home as soon as possible. Things like bedtime and breakfast routines change for us adults all
the time but can make a big difference to a kid. Try to stick to your routines but feel free to
have some treats mixed in for the kids like takeaway on the first night.
CONCLUSION
It may seem like a tall mountain to climb now but if you’ve read through this guide, you’re
already halfway to the summit. Communication and planning will go a long way to ensuring you
get into your new home without tearing your hair out. Plus, if you ever need further help
organising your move or tips on how to handle specialty objects, the friendly staff at Kyle bay
