PROF. M. M. NINAN<br />

1 Chronicles 20:6 And aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>re was war at Gath, where <strong>the</strong>re was a very tall man, who had twenty-four f<strong>in</strong>gers and<br />

toes, six f<strong>in</strong>gers on his hands and six toes on his feet; he was one of <strong>the</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Rephaim.<br />

1 Chronicles 20:8 These were of <strong>the</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Rephaim <strong>in</strong> Gath; <strong>the</strong>y came to <strong>the</strong>ir death by <strong>the</strong> hands of David and<br />

his servants.<br />

Isaiah 17:5 It will be like when <strong>the</strong> harvester ga<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong> wheat, and his arm reaps <strong>the</strong> gra<strong>in</strong>. Yes, it will be like when one<br />

gleans gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> valley of Rephaim.<br />

Isaiah 26:14 Dead -- <strong>the</strong>y live not, Rephaim, <strong>the</strong>y rise not, Therefore Thou hast <strong>in</strong>spected and dost destroy <strong>the</strong>m, Yea,<br />

thou destroyest all <strong>the</strong>ir memory.<br />

Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead live -- My dead body <strong>the</strong>y rise. Awake and s<strong>in</strong>g, ye dwellers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dust, For <strong>the</strong> dew of herbs 'is' thy<br />

dew, And <strong>the</strong> land of Rephaim thou causest to fall.<br />

2.REPHAIM, has a totally different mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r references where it is also called <strong>the</strong> shades or spirits of <strong>the</strong> departed,<br />

dwell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sheol or Hades.<br />

Psalms 88:10 To <strong>the</strong> dead dost Thou do wonders? Do Rephaim rise? do <strong>the</strong>y thank Thee? Selah. Proverbs 2:18 For her<br />

Ashteroth-Karnaim.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> biblical narrative, <strong>the</strong> Israelites were <strong>in</strong>structed to exterm<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> previous <strong>in</strong>habitants of <strong>the</strong><br />

"promised land", i.e. Canaan, which <strong>in</strong>clude various named peoples, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g some unusually<br />

tall/large <strong>in</strong>dividuals. Several passages <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book of Joshua, and also Deuteronomy 3:11, suggest<br />

that Og, <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g of Bashan, was one of <strong>the</strong> last survivors of <strong>the</strong> Rephaim, and that his bed was 9<br />

cubits long <strong>in</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary cubits. (An ord<strong>in</strong>ary cubit is <strong>the</strong> length of a man's forearm accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> New<br />

American Standard <strong>Bible</strong>, or approximately 18 <strong>in</strong>ches, which differs from a royal cubit. This makes <strong>the</strong><br />

bed over 13 feet long, even longer if <strong>the</strong> cubit was based on a giant's forearm). Anak, accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

2:11, was a Rephaite.<br />
