GIANTS IN THE BIBLE<br />

This was a fertile vale (Isaiah 17:5), to <strong>the</strong> Southwest of Jerusalem (Joshua 15:8; Joshua 18:16; <strong>the</strong><br />
K<strong>in</strong>g James Version "Valley of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Giants</strong>"), on <strong>the</strong> border between Judah and Benjam<strong>in</strong>. Here David<br />
repeatedly defeated <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vad<strong>in</strong>g Philist<strong>in</strong>es (2 Samuel 5:18, 22; 2 Samuel 23:13 1 Chronicles 11:15; 1<br />
Chronicles 14:9).<br />
It is located by Josephus between Jerusalem and Bethlehem (Ant., VII, iv, i; xii, 4). It corresponds to<br />
<strong>the</strong> modern el-Biqa`, which falls away to <strong>the</strong> Southwest from <strong>the</strong> lip of <strong>the</strong> valley of H<strong>in</strong>nom.<br />

It was a<br />
broad and fertile valley, Isaiah 17:5, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g near <strong>the</strong> valley of H<strong>in</strong>nom, and extend<strong>in</strong>g several miles<br />
south-west from Jerusalem, when it contracted to a narrow passage lead<strong>in</strong>g off towards <strong>the</strong><br />
Mediterranean.<br />
When <strong>the</strong> Israelites first approached <strong>the</strong> Promised Land after <strong>the</strong> Exodus from Egypt, <strong>the</strong>y were afraid<br />
to enter <strong>the</strong> land because it was filled with “giants” , <strong>the</strong> sons of Anak. <strong>Giants</strong> were also widely<br />
scattered through Canaan, but were known by different local names, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Rephaim, Zuzim, Emim,<br />
and Anakim. Deuteronomy 2:20–21 says <strong>the</strong> Rephaim were strong and tall, like <strong>the</strong> Anakites.<br />
We know noth<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
They are referred to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g verses.<br />
