GIANTS IN THE BIBLE<br />

PROF. M. M. NINAN<br />

The Amorite name means literally "<strong>the</strong> high one" and may refer to one (or more) of three possibilities:<br />

<strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>ous terra<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> land <strong>the</strong>y occupied (Num. 13:29; Deut. 1:7,19-20);<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir fearsome military prowess (Deut. 1:44); or<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir great stature (Num. 13:33).<br />

Here we see how <strong>the</strong> Giant genes escaped and entered <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> post-deluge world.<br />

somehow had <strong>the</strong> genes <strong>in</strong> him.<br />

Canaan<br />

While <strong>the</strong> Amorites are mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same contexts as o<strong>the</strong>r giants a few times, <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

specifically described as giants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>or Prophets.<br />

“Yet it was I who destroyed <strong>the</strong> Amorite before <strong>the</strong>m, whose height was like <strong>the</strong> height of <strong>the</strong> cedars,<br />

and he was as strong as <strong>the</strong> oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath. Also it was I<br />

who brought you up from <strong>the</strong> land of Egypt, and led you forty years through <strong>the</strong> wilderness, to possess<br />

<strong>the</strong> land of <strong>the</strong> Amorite” (Amos 2:9–10).<br />

The idea that <strong>the</strong> Amorites were giants is supported by <strong>the</strong> report of <strong>the</strong> spies whom Moses sent<br />

through <strong>the</strong> land of Canaan. The Amorites were one of <strong>the</strong> people groups <strong>the</strong>y saw (Numbers 13:29),<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y claimed that “all <strong>the</strong> people whom we saw <strong>in</strong> it are men of great stature” (Numbers 13:32). It<br />

is tell<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir response, Joshua and Caleb did not challenge <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> land’s <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

(Numbers 14:6–9).<br />

The term Amorites is used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bible</strong> to refer to certa<strong>in</strong> highland mounta<strong>in</strong>eers who <strong>in</strong>habited <strong>the</strong> land<br />

of Canaan, described <strong>in</strong> Genesis 10:16 as descendants of Canaan, <strong>the</strong> son of Ham. They are<br />

described as a powerful people of great stature "like <strong>the</strong> height of<br />

<strong>the</strong> cedars" (Amos 2:9) who had occupied <strong>the</strong> land east and west<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Jordan. The height and strength mentioned <strong>in</strong> Amos 2:9 has<br />

led some Christian scholars, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Orville J. Nave, who wrote<br />

<strong>the</strong> classic Nave's Topical <strong>Bible</strong>, to refer to <strong>the</strong> Amorites as<br />

"giants".<br />

Hammurabi was an Amorite First Dynasty k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> city-state of<br />

Babylon, and <strong>in</strong>herited <strong>the</strong> power from his fa<strong>the</strong>r, S<strong>in</strong>-Muballit, <strong>in</strong> c.<br />

1792 BC. Hammurabi[a] (c. 1810 BC – c. 1750 BC) is best<br />
