GIANTS IN THE BIBLE<br />

PROF. M. M. NINAN<br />

Nimrod as a mighty hunter founded a powerful k<strong>in</strong>gdom; and <strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g of this k<strong>in</strong>gdom is<br />

shown by <strong>the</strong> verb with vav consecutive, to have been <strong>the</strong> consequence or result of his strength <strong>in</strong><br />

hunt<strong>in</strong>g, so that hunt<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong>timately connected with <strong>the</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom. Hence, if<br />

<strong>the</strong> expression "a mighty hunter" relates primarily to hunt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literal sense, we must add to<br />

<strong>the</strong> literal mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> figurative signification of a "hunter of men" (a trapper of men by stratagem<br />

and force); Nimrod <strong>the</strong> hunter became a tyrant, a powerful hunter of men (Keil and Delitzsch 1975:<br />

165).<br />

"<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face of YHVH can only mean "<strong>in</strong> defiance of YHVH," as Josephus and <strong>the</strong> Targums<br />

understand it<br />

And <strong>the</strong> proverb must have arisen when o<strong>the</strong>r dar<strong>in</strong>g and rebellious men followed <strong>in</strong> Nimrod's<br />

footsteps and must have orig<strong>in</strong>ated with those who saw <strong>in</strong> such conduct an act of rebellion aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong> God of salvation, <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, with <strong>the</strong> possessors of <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e promise of grace .<br />

Is Nimrod <strong>the</strong> Anti-Christ?<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> years, biblical scholar Gary Stearman has written extensively about Nimrod<br />

(Apollo/Osiris/Gilgamesh) and <strong>the</strong> connection this historical figure has with Babylonian Mystery<br />

Religion, Watchers, Nephilim (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir resurrection), and <strong>the</strong> spirit of <strong>the</strong> end-times<br />

Antichrist and revival of paganism. He too appears to believe <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g of Antichrist represents a<br />

return of Nimrod. "But who is this Assyrian," he asked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> July 2001 Prophecy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> News<br />

Magaz<strong>in</strong>e, "He is none o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> spiritual <strong>in</strong>heritor of <strong>the</strong> first great post-Flood religious<br />

apostasy. He is <strong>the</strong> keeper of <strong>the</strong> great heritage that began at <strong>the</strong> Assyrian capital, N<strong>in</strong>eveh. Its<br />

founder was Nimrod…. He is <strong>the</strong> Antichrist, <strong>the</strong> future despot who comes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong><br />

ancient mystery religion."<br />
