The archaeologists used a variety of techniques, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g radiocarbon dat<strong>in</strong>g on workers' campfires<br />
from millennia ago, to discover that holes cut <strong>in</strong>to rocky outcrops to ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> stones were made<br />
centuries before Stonehenge was built.<br />

The holes were dated to between 3,400 and 3,200 BC, but Stonehenge was only created <strong>in</strong> Wiltshire<br />
around 2,900BC. Some of <strong>the</strong> biggest stones weigh 50 tons, but s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> civilisation that built it left no<br />
written records beh<strong>in</strong>d, we don't know for sure how <strong>the</strong>y did it.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> time of Stonehenge's creation, <strong>the</strong> wheel had not even been built - modern tests have shown it<br />
is possible to move stones of similar size on roll<strong>in</strong>g logs or sleighs, but <strong>the</strong> most archaeologists can do<br />
is make an educated guess.<br />
Alternatively, <strong>the</strong>y could have a read Erich von Däniken's<br />
sem<strong>in</strong>al book Chariots of <strong>the</strong> Gods?, which makes <strong>the</strong><br />
argument that many ancient megastructures such as<br />
Stonehenge, <strong>the</strong> Egyptian pyramids, and <strong>the</strong> Moai heads of<br />
Easter Island were built us<strong>in</strong>g know-how passed down from<br />
God-like aliens to mank<strong>in</strong>d.<br />
