FRONTS LOOKING FOR REPEAT OF LAST SERIES
AFTER DROPPING THE FIRST TWO GAMES, KINGSTON NEEDS A SPARK ON HOME ICE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SERIES
For the second straight series the
Kingston Frontenacs find themselves
in a 2-0 hole, this time to the Hamilton
Bulldogs. Kingston is familiar with the
situation. They trailed the Barrie Colts
by the same 2-0 deficit just two weeks
ago before winning four straight games.
Last year they trailed the Hamilton
Bulldogs 2-0 before eventually winning
in game seven on home ice. The
Rogers K-Rock Centre was the spark
the Frontenacs needed last series to get
going and they will look for their home
ice to provide that spark again tonight.
Jeremy Helvig’s numbers don’t look
very good through the first two games,
but the blame can’t be placed on the
overage goaltender. The Kingston
defense didn’t provide much support
and gave the Bulldogs far too many
quality scoring chances. The penalty
kill was a bit of an issue as well for the
Frontenacs. Hamilton is 4 for 11 on
the power play so far in the series. Cliff
Pu missing most of game one and all
of game two made things complicated
as far as line combinations go. The top
line changed upwards of five times in
vs
game two as Jay Varady looked for the
right combination.
While Kingston has struggled through
two games, Hamilton is getting
contributions from a lot of players. In
game two, the Bulldogs had seven
different goal scorers. Kaden Fulcher
has yet to be tested in the series. In
game two, Hamilton only allowed 20
shots on net, many of which were from
bad angles or from the blue line without
much traffic. Hamilton is skating well,
and their puck possession numbers are
very good. Their record has resembled
their start to the playoffs. They now
sit at 10-2 since the OHL post-season
began.
Playing from behind in a series is
something that Kingston hasn’t let
phase them. They have lost game one
in each series this year but eventually
bounced back. The coaching staff has
done a great job of making adjustments
mid-series to swing momentum back in
Kingston’s favour. They will look to do
that again tonight to get Kingston back
in the series. - KF

START THE SERIES STRONG
The Kingston Frontenacs have found success in each of their first two playoff series,
but it took a game or two to find it. They dropped the opening game against North Bay
before winning four straight and then lost the first two games against Barrie before
going on another four-game winning streak. Now that they have reached the Eastern
Conference Finals, it is becoming more important to avoid digging an early hole. As
the playoffs progress, each opponent is getting more and more difficult to overcome.
The Hamilton Bulldogs lost four straight games just once this season, so losing the first
game or two could be disastrous.
NET FRONT PRESENCE
Getting traffic in front of the Hamilton net will help disrupt what has been a solid playoff
performance by Kaden Fulcher so far. With a good-sized group up front, Kingston can
win position battles in front of the Hamilton net that will make life more difficult for
Fulcher. With bodies in front, it becomes difficult for goalies to find the puck through
traffic. It also allows for plenty of opportunities to tip point shots or find loose rebounds
that can lead to goals. At this point in the playoffs there aren’t many pretty goals being
scored. It’s all about winning battles and scoring ugly goals in front of the net.
BE PHYSICAL IN ALL ZONES
In the last series against Barrie, Kingston used their size and physicality to wear down
the Colts. With Max Jones returning to the lineup, it gave Kingston an added boost
of size and another forward who is more than willing to throw his weight around on
opposing players. Ted Nichol, Tyler Burnie and Ryan Cranford can all be thrown into
that category. On the back-end Jacob Paquette and Eemeli Rasanen can punish
forwards who are willing to chase pucks into the corner. Over a long series finishing
hits can wear a team down and slow them up by a half step. It can also force players to
look over their shoulders in a race for the puck. That can lead to a turnover or winning
a puck battle that may not have come in the early parts of the series and could be the
difference in games, especially as the series moves along. - KF

THE ROAD TO THE EASTERN
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Ted Nichol scored the go-ahead goal late in
the second period of game six that would
end up being the series clincher for Kingston.
They defeated the Barrie Clots 4-2 in the best
of seven series to earn a spot in the Eastern
Conference Finals for the first time since 1993.
The Hamilton Bulldogs took care of the Niagara
IceDogs 4-1 to set up a match-up between the
two division rivals for the Bobby Orr Trophy.
For the second consecutive series Kingston
dropped the opener, this time on the road. They
would also lose game 2 in Barrie before getting
on a roll to win four consecutive games and win
the series. Gabe Vilardi recorded three straight
multi goal games in games three through five to
help push the Frontenacs to a series win. After
a shaky game one, Jeremy Helvig returned to
his dominant form allowing two goals or less in
all four Kingston victories. The Burnie – Nichol
– Cranford line was handed the task of shutting
down the top line of the Colts which was made
up of three 40-goal scorers and they did a
remarkable job allowing just one 5 on 5 goal in
Kingston’s four wins.
The Hamilton Bulldogs first defeated the
Ottawa 67’s and then the Niagara IceDogs
by the same 4 games to 1 result in their
opening two rounds. Much like Kingston, one
of Hamilton’s trade deadline acquisitions has
been leading the way in the playoffs. Robert
Thomas, who was acquired from the London
Knights, leads the Bulldogs with 15 points in
just 10 games. Kaden Fulcher leads the OHL in
GAA at 2.51 in the playoffs. Justin Lemcke is a
big defender that won’t add much on the score
sheet, but will play major minutes for his team
in key situations.
The two teams could not be more evenly
matched. Hamilton won 4 of 6 regular season
match-ups with four games going into overtime.
The Bulldogs carry 9 players drafted by NHL
teams while Kingston has an impressive 8 on
their roster. Just last season Kingston defeated
the Bulldogs in overtime of game 7 of the
opening round of the 2017 OHL Playoffs when
Linus Nyman scored the series winning goal.
With so much in common this year, it would not
be surprising to see this series go the distance
for a second year in a row. - KF
