Lua Stardust
8 | @wavemag @thewaveX | 9

Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you
are from.
I'm Lua Stardust! An alternative tattoo model and cosplayer
from New Jersey. I have been modeling since 2008 and
cosplaying since 2012. When I'm not making cosplays or in
front of the camera, I am often behind it. I film a lot of vlogs
and tattoo time lapse videos of my boyfriend, Joe Matisa, at
tattoo conventions around the USA.
What was your first tattoo?
My first tattoo was a small puzzle piece on my wrist. It's
definitely one I've outgrown and I'm planning on covering
it up.
How many tattoos do you have?
I think at this point I've lost count of how many tattoos
I have! I would say somewhere over thirty but the actual
number is a loss for me. At this point my legs and arms are
becoming sleeves and my intent is to cover my entire body
so they'll all become "one" eventually (laughs)
Which tattoo hurt the most?
I think my most painful tattoos were my calf tattoos. The
pain was unexpected for sure. I have a few tattoos that are
known for being painful spots on the body but I never expected
my calves to hurt so much!
What is your favorite tattoo?
My favorite tattoo is tie between the crow on my leg and
my courage the cowardly dog tattoo! They both have a huge
significant part of me for different reasons.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
I'm not sure if I have one true favorite tattoo artist. I love to
collect small pieces while I travel as a memory of a place I
visit. If I had to pick one it might have to be Joe Matisa. Call
me biased since he's my boyfriend but that dude has the
SOFTEST hand ever! Plus it hurts less when you have someone
cute working on ya.
How important is social media to you as a model?
Social Media is extremely important as a business in general.
Personally, if my job didn't revolve around social media
I'm not sure I would even be on it. I'm not big on numbers
reflecting on who a person should be. Does that make
sense? That I don't want to be defined by a number? It's
important to reach out through all platforms to the people
who care about me & my content. Plus it's been an incredible
way to meet so many new people!
Any advice for aspiring alternative / tattoo models?
My advice for aspiring alternative / tattoo models is to continuously
work on your craft! Meaning practice poses, build
up a great portfolio and continue on with your passions no
matter what. One of my favorite stories is that I had been
turned down from a publication for "not being tattooed
enough." The same weekend I booked 2 covers and a spread
/ feature for 3 different magazines. Never let one person
keep you down!
Where can we see more of you?
Thank you so much for checking out this issue of The Wave
magazine! If you want to see more of me be sure to check
out my wesbite luastardust.com where you can find my patreon,
instagram, youtube and all of my other social media
platforms!
How long have you been a tattoo artist?
16 years, since 2002.
Angela Adams
Do you find that there are any challenges that you face being a female artist?
Like, do some think that you aren’t that good because you’re a woman? I have never come across any
problems because I am a female artist. In fact, some clients seek me out because I am a woman.
Do many guy tattoo artist throw shade your way and hate on you?
None.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
Yes it was a solid black iron cross about 2” tall...probably turned out terrible.
@angelaadams
How would you describe your tattooing style?
I am a very versatile artist and can do many styles. I love
bright, full color, detailed pieces...but Can also rock some
black and gray. I enjoy working on all different styles.
Can you explain to me what a vegan tattoo is?
I myself am vegan, and fortunately Eternal Ink is a vegan
ink which is what I use. All other products used during the
Tattoo are vegan as well...instead of using Vaseline during
the Tattoo I use either Ohana Organics or Hustle Butter,
which are both vegan and can be used as aftercare. And I
also carry Recovery Aftercare products which are vegan.
And what are the benefits to me opposed to a tattoo done
with traditional inks?
They are the same inks that are used by most professional
artists.
What is the secret to achieving such detail in your tattoos?
Patience!
Where is the most difficult area that you have found for
you to tattoo someone?
Necks and elbows usually take a bit more effort in my experience.
Do your friends let you tattoo them for practice, or if you
are trying a new technique or style?
Sometimes on my husband, but I don’t really do practice
tattoos at this point.
Should people that have been drinking get tattooed?
Absolutely not, it thins the blood and can make it hard for
the artist to deal with the client.
What tattoo artists, if any, do you draw inspiration from?
A lot, including Paul Booth and Phil Garcia.
What’s the secret to being a great tattoo artist?
Accepting that there is always going to be someone better
than you and to keep learning and improving what you do.
Words of advice for anyone that wants to become a tattoo
artist?
Wait for a good artist to accept you as an apprentice. Don’t
just pick it up on your own, you’ll develop bad habits and it
may be difficult to get a shop to hire you.
Where can we get inked by you and see more of your
work?
Who is...
skitzo?
Please introduce yourself to our readers and let them
know where you are from.
Hey what’s up my name is Skitzo and I’m a 27 year old hip
hop artist from Brooklyn ,Ny. My work is personal and I
talk about things I go through as well as the things that I see
. It can go from conscious to love to hype in a split second
so I have something for everyone to listen to.
Musically how would you describe your flow?
Musically i would describe my flow as I would describe my
name ..it just goes on how I’m feeling at that certain time
and can change at any second. You can’t really put it in a
category.
The name, Skitzo... Can you tell us why and the meaning
behind the name?
Actually Skitzo was a play on my old name “Skittles “. I wore
colorful clothes and used how I dressed to match how I was
feeling that day as well as being a part of the LGBT community.
But as I started to take my career more seriously I realized
that people probably wouldn’t take the name seriously
so I changed it. I kept playing around with it until I felt like
it fit me and Skitzo basically became my persona. Soon as
my name changed, so did my music . I basically became
alive as an artist.
Your IG profile says, “If Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes
@whoisskitzo
had a child”… that’s very interesting. Why do you think
the outcome would be you?
I think if missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes had a child the
outcome would be me because they’re both my inspirations
as far as music and creativity goes. Usually you would look
up to your parents and from a child I’ve always loved the
fact that they both did what they wanted to do as artist.
They made it fun they made it loud they made it creative
and always stepped outside of the box. These are things I
would want to be remembered for as well.
One of my favorite rap songs is by you, “27 Club”. Can
you explain the concept behind that song?
Thank you! I appreciate you listening to the 27 club as well
as other songs of mine. The 27 club is basically a group of
artist who died at 27 In the prime of their careers but by
violent , drug and/or alcohol related means. This song was
important to me because I wanted to educate people on
what it was as well as showing that fame as well as your
personal demons can change a person and the events in
their life So I used artists that most people are familiar
with ( Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Jean Michel Basquait
and Kurt Cobain) to describe how I was feeling as an artist
knowing I’m 27 years old now, and basically saying that if
it was my time I wanted to go in my prime like the legends
I’ve talked about in the song.
Who are some of your musical influences?
My musical influences are of course , Missy Elliot ,
Busta Rhymes ,Timbaland , Lil Kim , Asap Rocky ,
Pharrell , Kanye West and Jay-Z to name a few.
The new video, “Neck of the Woods/Ha”, is dope and
the single, “Pull Up”, is another banger. When will
we be able to get our hands, “Gauche: The EP”?
Thank you ! “Pull Up” Video is also coming real soon
by the way. “Gauche The Ep” will be available May 9,
2018! So make sure you check that out. The link will
be posted on all of my social media platforms.
What direction do you see rap music going in the
next 2-5 years? The direction i see rap going in the
next 2-5 years is back in time where it was more
meaningful . History repeats itself and I feel like the
more original artists will set an example and reign.
What do you think about the state of hip hop today?
The state of hip hop today I feel like is watered down.
I would never knock how a artist express themselves
but I feel like they should do it in their own way and
make it their own . A lot of acts these days sound the
same and you can’t tell them apart . To me that’s how
they put us all in one category when it shouldn’t be
that way . We all are different and we should show that
in my opinion.
How do you feel about the new artist, mumble rappers
and will it be around in the future?
I feel like mumble rappers are cool for right now . I’m
not going to lie when I listen to them on the radio I
don’t change the station simply because it’s catchy and
simple . But I feel like eventually it’ll get old like most
trends then it’s on to something new .
If you could work with any artist in their prime, just
1 dead or alive, who would it be?
If I could work with any artist in their prime dead or
alive it would be Either Kurt Cobain or Timbaland. I
feel like either way it would be a meaningful hit .
Who are you listening to right now?
Right now I’m listening to, Kelis kaleidoscope album
heavy like it just came out, lol. N.E.R.D , H.E.R, Kendrick,
and mostly New York artist. Cardi B, I’m very
happy for her and her success, Tekashi 69 as well. A lot
of people hate on him, but I like him cuz he seems like
he’s his own person, and I admire that.
Edwin Delarosa @rusty_yokes
How long have you been a tattoo artist?
I’ve been tattooing for about 6 years now, 5 if I exclude my
apprenticeship.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
The first tattoo I remember doing was a star on a friend’s
wrist. He was teaching me to tattoo at the time and without
question every line in that star was either crooked or blown
out. (Haha)
How would you describe your tattooing style?
I would describe my tattooing as a blend of neo-traditional
and new school. I try to do what ever tattoo I can. However
if I’m given freedom to design the piece it’ll probably be a
mixture of those two styles, if it’s not one or the other. I like
to make tattoos that make an impression but are also fun to
look at.
Where is the most difficult area on the body that you have
found to tattoo someone?
If I had to choose an area of the body I’d say the neck or
ribs. Anywhere that the skin gets a lot of motion or movement
really. One thing Ive learned is how a client sits makes
a tattoo more difficult to do so lack of pain tolerance can
turn an easy tattoo into a very stressful process.
Have you ever tattooed yourself?
And, if so, how was the outcome? I think every tattoo artist
has tattooed themselves at least once but to answer your
question Yes I have. One of my first tattoos didn’t come out
the way I wanted so the first chance I got I redid the outline.
It’s on my right bicep so it was very awkward to do but I
got it done. The outcome wasn’t bad but I’m sure I won’t be
tattooing myself again. (Haha)
done but to push myself and progress with every tattoo I do.
I know it isn’t the best answer but I always strive to make
the next tattoo better than the last.
Do your friends let you tattoo them for practice, or if you
are trying to learn a new technique or style?
Yes.. they have. When I was still in my apprenticeship I
was lucky enough to have friends that let me tattoo them.
Ive learned a lot from those tattoos but man... I owe a few
people cover ups. (Haha) Passed that I’m not one to experiment
on people’s skin. Even when there are things I want to
try I find other ways to learn what I want to do. I don’t want
to try something on a person’s skin if I’m not sure of the end
result.
In your opinion, should people that have been drinking
alcohol get tattooed?
Not only in my opinion but I’m very sure the general consensus
is to not get tattoooed if you had a few before coming
to the shop. Alcohol makes the blood thinner and that
alone causes enough complications. I always tell people that
drinking before a tattoo will help a lot less than they think.
What has been the most bizarre tattoo you have ever done
on someone?
I haven’t done many tattoos that I consider bizarre. I tend to
refuse to do a tattoo if I feel it isn’t the best idea for the client.
I’ve seen many bizarre tattoos coming into tattoo shops.
One that comes to mind is when a client came in wanting a
huge cover up on her back. When she showed us the tattoo
it was of a big.... “male situation” that was riding her spine
with a few drops on the top of it. You can guess what I’m
talking about. (Haha) When we asked about the tattoo and
why she got it she casually replied “because that’s what I like
so why not?” So after a few hours, a lot of laughs and some
pain her tattoo was covered with with some beautiful roses
and shes able to wear the backless wedding dress that she
wanted to. True story.
What tattoo artists, if any, do you draw inspiration from?
That’s a question I can answer for a few hours. There’re a
lot of artists who’s work motivate me and that I strive to
be more like. An example of this is my stance on tap out
sessions. It’s something that’s popular here in New York but
since none of the artist I admire do tap out sessions then
I won’t either. There is a respect and disciple?? that tattooers
carry when they take their craft seriously and that’s
something that I try to do myself. To name a few artist that
inspire me, Adam Perjet, Randy Randerson, Jime Litwalk,
Victor Chil and a whole bunch more. They’re all artist I feel
people should check out. I would also like to mention the
artist that I work with because they do push and motivate
me to always evolve and make my craft better.
Do you have a favorite tattoo artist?
The people I mentioned in the previous question I suppose.
For someone that has never had any ink work, where
would you recommend, or suggest, they get their first
tattoo to experience the least amount of pain?
On the arm, if I really have to suggest a part of the body.
When someone comes to me for their first tattoo I try to not
be too stern with the location of the tattoo but I do advise
for the person to get a tattoo that won’t take too much time.
Tattoos hurt no matter where they’re placed but if a person
is getting tattooed for the first time and they’re overwhelmed
with the pain of sitting for too long it can push
them away from getting more tattoos done later. For a first
timer, they have to pace themselves in terms of how long
they sit for their first tattoo.
Any words of advice for anyone that wants to become a
tattoo artist?
Be persistent, never stop drawing, and if anyone gives you
any advice or tips absorb it how ever you can. It’s difficult to
get an apprenticeship but it’s truly the right way to learn to
tattoo and the best way. The most important thing is to be
persistent. Ive wanted to tattoo since I was 14 and from then
until I was 19 I would go into any shop I would find and ask
to learn to tattoo. You have to really want it and be willing
to pay dues
Where can we get inked by you and see more of your
work?
I work at Crown Ink Studio in Brooklyn but if anyone wants
to get tattooed or has any questions the can reach me on
Instagram @rusty_yokes or by email www.eddytattoos@
gmail.com
Up to this point, what has been your favorite tattoo that
you have done?
I can’t say I have a favorite tattoo. There are plenty that I’m
proud of but my mentality isn’t to be so proud of pieces I’ve
Do you remember what your
first tattoo was?
My 1st tattoo was a dragon on
my upper arm. I copied my
girl crush Angelina Jolie! I was
only 15! I’ve since had it covered
over.
How many tattoos do you have
at the present time, and do you
plan on
getting more work done?
I have no idea how many tattoos
i have as they all kind of
join.. Over 60% percent of my
body is covered so far.. And
i have so many future tattoo
plans. Starting with a full Japanese
leg piece!
Out of all of your tattoos,
which one would you say is
your favorite?
My favorite tattoo is my Elvis
portrait on my forearm. I love
him! Visited Graceland many
times!
What inspired you to turn
your body into a canvas of
beautiful art?
My tattooist was the trigger for
me transforming my body into
a canvas! He’s very artistic and a
pleasure being around!
Why do you think society has
now become more accepting of
tattoos?
Tattoos are so fashionable at the
moment and are very accepted!
I think it’s because they look
super sexy!
Being a presenter for Playboy
and on Xpanded TV, are you
recognized in public and do you
have any stalkers or over excited
fans?
I work on Playboy and Xpanded
TV and do get recognized from
time to time! I won best alternative
model of the year last year!
I do have quite a lot of fans who
support me and keep me positive!
26 | @wavemag @thewaveX | 27

What is the best thing about
being a super sexy alt/tattoo
model?
The best thing about being a
tattoo model is the world seeing
you transform with each
new piece you get!! Plus I do
love posing lol
Do you have a favorite tattoo
artist?
My favorite and only tattoo
artist is Clive Harvey from
Tattooinc, in Colchester, Essex!!!
He’s amazing!
How important is social
media to you as a tattoo / alt
model?
Social media is very important
as I get all my work from
there. The more followers the
better!
Do you have any words of
advice for aspiring alternative
/ tattoo models?
To any aspiring models / tattoo
models is to just always do
the best you can and never feel
pressured into anything you are
not comfortable with!
VICA VICTORIA
@00vicavictoria00
34 | @wavemag
@thewaveX | 35

Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you are from.
My Name is Victoria and I’m 31 years old. I was born in the UDSSR on 27th October 1986 and moved over to Germany in
1991. I’m living with my husband and 2 years old son in Cologne (Germany).
When did you decide that you wanted become a makeup artist?
My relation to makeup changed, when I become 26 yrs. old. Of Course, I’ve used it before too, but then I started to own
more and more different things and try them out. I prefer to call me a junior makup artist. There is so much, that I have to
learn. Every day I see sth. new, that I want to acquire. I teached myself everything what you can see in my work. I think,
that it is important never stop learning. If you have a vision you have to make a goal out of it, doing steps in the direction of
your vision every day!
Where and when did you realize that you had such an amazing skill?
I’ve always been artistically gifted, draw pictures etc.. I noticed my makeup skills very late through trying out sth. new on
myself. I never dared to do such a thing, I was too shy and never wanted to be in the focus, thinking that my work might
be to bad. However, my family has made me stronger and supported me, so that I just did it. The comments and the raising
number of my follower give me ne power every day! Many thanks for the support at this point!
Has special effect / creative make up always been what you wanted to do?
It evolved over time. Since I’ver started to deal with different makeup, when I was 26, I always loved to do that “normal”
things. At the same point I searched for a development of myself and tried sth. new. So was I realized that I enjoy sfx / facepaintings
so much more. I associate my makeup looks with self-designed headpieces. I feel like I’ve found my niche, I've
found what separates me and make me happy.
What has been your favorite creation to date?
So far is my favorite the recreation of the watercolor illustration at haiqa-ghazi. I’m in love with the red shades in combination
with the golden accessories.
How important is social media to you and your
career as a makeup artist?
Social media is extremely visual and what is more visual than make-up? We all know that every day, social media is taking
over more and more! Engaging a community of makeup lovers is vital when trying to establish credibility and skill.
Do you have any advice for aspiring makeup artist?
Educate yourself, practice and never give up. Stay enthusiastic and open your eyes for everything while searching for inspiration!
The most important advice is “passion”!
If you could leave one mark on the world, what would it be?
I will leave this world not with a monument, but with the impact of love, kindness, compassion, understanding - and a
smile. Kindness makes you the most beautiful person in the world no matter what you look like.
Where can we see more of your work?
Instagram: @00vicavictoria00
YouTube : www.youtube.com/channel/UCFonfTOCckbZiS6YfaZzchA?view_as=subscriber
Where does your inspiration for your ideas come from?
I am inspired by many different artists. I prefer to get inspiration from drawings, especially watercolor illustrations. I love
the work of haiqa-ghazi (Instagram) and dustinbailard (Instagram). I try to take out my inspiration of everything that I see.
Just open your eyes for the nature and you will see so much beautiful things that you can implement in your work.
Who are some of the makeup artist that you admire?
There are so many artists I go for. This question has to be it’s own interview. Ryan Burke, Etienne Ortega, Corie Willet,
Alexis Stone just to name a few.
Which one is your favorite makeup artist?
Definitely Ryan Burke! He’s just an amazing makeup artist and photographer. His work is out of this world.
Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you are from.
My name is MiMi Fulton and I’m from Philadelphia, Pa.
Which of your tattoos has the most meaning?
None of my tattoos have “meaning” to be honest. I collect art that I find visually
appealing from artists I respect and admire their work/style.
What was your first tattoo?
A Bettie Page Olivia painting that has since been lasered and covered up.
How many tattoos do you have?
How many jelly beans are in a jar? Your guess is as good as mine... lol
Which tattoo hurt the most?
My rose and shark-head lower stomach piece
What is your favorite tattoo?
My neck by far. My California Condor and Bearded Vulture done by Bobby Johnson
who tattoos at Grand Reaper in San Diego.
What inspired you to turn your body into a canvas of beautiful
art?
Like I said, I love collecting art from talented artists and it just
sort of happened over time. I’ve been collecting for 20 years
now. So in that time it’s easy to accumulate the amount that I
have.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
Justin Hartman is a favorite as is Yogi Barrett. Two entirely different
styles but both incredibly talented. I’d love to be tattooed
by them one day but alas, I’m running out of room.
Do you attend any tattoo conventions?
Yes. Usually only on the east coast and it’s mainly to enter
modeling competitions. I won miss Empire State in 2016 and
Miss Vixen in 2015. I placed third in Miss United Ink 2017. I’m
a very competitive person, I love contests, lol.
Aneila Marya @anielamarya
Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where
you are from.
My name is Aniela Marya and I am from Cambridge
MA, grew up in New Hampshire but now live in the
ever free and always beautiful Hermosa Beach, California.
Which of your tattoos has the most meaning?
I have a tattoo on my bicep that says “RIP Gucci” for
my friend that was taken from this world way too
soon.
What was your first tattoo?
For my first tattoo I got my right arm outlined. I kinda
knew I always wanted to have a lot.
How many tattoos do you have?
I’m not really sure how to answer this question. I’d say
I have one big one. They all flow into each other so
I’ve lost count.
Which tattoo hurt the most?
My back for sure. The pain on your back is always
changing depending on what spot they are on. It’s very
hard to get used to it, at least for me.
What is your favorite tattoo?
My favorite tattoo is the RIP Gucci one on my bicep.
He was the first person who introduced me to weightlifting,
gymnastics and powerlifting and my addiction
has never stopped. I wanted to get the tattoo there so
if I got more jacked it would be a constant reminder of
him and the love for fitness he gave me.
What inspired you to turn your body into a canvas
of beautiful art?
I always loved art my entire life. Everything in life is
art in some way. I love representing that to the extreme.
Everything worth doing is worth over doing
right!? :)
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
I have a few but Chance Isbell out of Mantra Tattoo in
Denver. Nick Flanagan out of Sho Gun Tattoo in Salem,
NH. And Dennis M Del Prete out of Providence
Tattoo in Providence Rhode Island. These three are
the first ones to tattoo me and the ones I consider dear
to me as friends still.
Do you attend any tattoo conventions?
I do when they are in the area! Love checking out the
art that is sold at them. I don't get tattooed a lot anymore
I have so many already!
How important is social media to you as a
model?
A:I try to post my new sets and other material
too so people know who I am other than just
the modeling looks. I like for people to see me
in the raw too, keeps it more real and genuine. I
want to convey a real image to people. To show
girls that you can kick ass every day- that you
are beautiful with and without makeup, lights
and wardrobe. I want to give a real raw image
for people. I feel like it's sexier anyway.
M: It’s the perfect networking tool to show off
my portfolio to get work from photographers
who most likely never would have seen my
work. It is also a platform to be inspired as well
as inspire other models which I find extremely
supportive. I’m a part of a few modeling groups
some of which are being an official representative
of magazines and it is a huge support network
for strong females to support other strong
females in a very cutthroat industry. I’m very
thankful for my IG modeling families. They are
beautiful and inspirational women that help
push me to do my best!
Any advice for aspiring alt / tattoo models?
A: I would say be ready for people to tell you
what they think of you constantly- and to believe
in yourself.
M: It’s not an easy road and it’s incredibly tough
at times but if you can push through it and keep
marketing yourself in the most positive (and I
mean GENUINE positive, people see through
bullshit very easily in the modeling world)
manner you can, you can succeed in what it
is you are trying to achieve. Do not ever get
defensive or go on the attack when an editor of
a magazine or a photographer is trying to give
you constructive criticism as long as it’s respectful.
It is meant to help you learn and grow.
Network with other models. Use their support
to help you grow rather than talk shit or put
down other women just because they are successful.
Negativity is your number one enemy
in this industry. And lastly, be yourself. There
isn’t anyone out there that looks or acts like you
so use that to your advantage. That is a positive
thing so use it with all of your heart.
Paul Aroca @guayakill_ink
How long have you been a tattoo artist?
I been doing tattoos for more than 20 years. Half of my carrier here in New York. It’s thanks to Ana Lima for giving me the
opportunity to be part of her crew at @crowninkstudio.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
Yes, I do remember, I have it on my ankle
How would you describe your tattooing style?
mmm… I have never thought about it… but I like to do Japanese, Chineses… and cover ups.
What is the secret to achieving such detail in your tattoos?
To me, is no secret… just dedication on what you do.
Where is the most difficult area on the body that you have found to tattoo someone?
They are some parts… some ladies bellys some time. NECKS for sure.
Up to this point, what has been your favorite tattoo that you have done?
I have couples…. But the hell raising cube, Thai elephant and a girl puppet and some others.
You are from Ecuador, and now in Brooklyn, NYC, do
you see any differences in the tattoo culture and lifestyle
between the two places?
there is a big difference between both, Down there peolple
don’t get too big tattoos like they do here here.
Do your friends let you tattoo them for practice, or if you
are trying to learn a new technique or style?
I asked before at the beginning of my career, now… they are
waiting for me down there and I always learn something
new. lol
In your opinion, should people that have been drinking
alcohol get tattooed?
NO… they might don’t feel to much… but they moving a
lot and bleeds more.
What has been the most bizarre tattoo you have ever done
on someone?
I still remember… it was was an eagle holding arrows under
her the panties. I’m not going to describe it, but... I could
see everything.
What tattoo artists, if any, do you draw inspiration from?
None really…. I seen different artist art work and some are
amazing.
Do you have a favorite tattoo artist?
I yes do, Paul Booth.
For someone that has never had any ink work, where
would you recommend, or suggest, they get their first
tattoo to experience the least amount of pain?
What I would recommend is for your first tattoo to be made
on the shoulder or back which is where it hurts a little less.
Any words of advice for anyone that wants to become a
tattoo artist?
More than advice is a question ... they really want to make
tattoos? It might sound funny but sometimes it's very stressful
like any other job.
Where can we get inked by you and see more of your
work?
Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you
are from.
Allyce Heilborn and I’m from Leesburg, Florida
Which of your tattoos has the most meaning to you?
The one on my back. The koi means overcoming obstacles
and dealing with the health issues I do on a daily it’s just my
constant reminder.
Do you remember what your first tattoo was?
A tribal piece that I later had covered up.
How many tattoos do you have at the present time, and do
you plan on getting more work done?
Over 30 and yes I’m definitely not done getting tattooed.
Out of all of your tattoos, which one would you say is your
favorite?
I don’t know if I can pick just one.
What inspired you to turn your body into a canvas of
beautiful art?
I can’t draw but I love art. So what better way to show off the
things I love through my body.
With anything it just takes time.
Do you have a favorite tattoo artist?
Not off the top of my head.
Do you attend any tattoo conventions?
I’ve been to a few in my home town.
How important is social media to you as a tattoo / alt
Gil Rios @gilrios
52 | @wavemag
Please introduce yourself to
our readers and let them know
where you are from.
My Name is Gil Rios I’m from
Bronx,New York, but I reside in
New Jersey.
How long have you been a film
maker?
I’ve been a filmmaker for 8
years.
What was the inspiration
behind the docu series, “TAT-
TOO LIFE”?
My inspiration for Tattoo Life
was when I was working as an
exterminator and on my route
was a tattoo shop, they had a
rodent problem in the backyard.
The owner said if I solve her
problem that she would give
me a free tattoo, hence my first
tattoo in honor of my mom who
passed away. My mom was very
important in my life, I figured
if my tattoo has meaning others
would also have deep meanings
with their tattoos, which is the
reason why I created Tattoo Life.
Do you find that there are any
challenges that you face when
trying to secure tattoo artist
for the films?
At first it was not that difficult,
I had my friends (who let me
interview them) to help me in
the beginning with the first trial
run as I was just starting out
as a filmmaker, I took a hiatus
from the project because I felt
I wasn’t ready. I started doing
music videos to help me sharpen
my skills, doing music videos
helped me become a better filmmaker.
I was in a radio show as a
guest which Sandi Kane helped
me get, called the sit down. As
Sandi was interviewing me I
told her about the idea of Tattoo
Life she then cut me off immediately
and changed the subject.
When we got to the car she said
the idea was amazing and she
didn’t want anyone at the station
to take the idea. Sandi said she
will help me with securing as
many interviews as needed and
help me with doing the P.R.
for the series. In the Beginning
of my second run we had our
issues landing Interviews people
didn’t believe in the idea, But
we eventually got some amazing
interviews. So to answer
your question, yes it was hard
but with team work anything is
possible.
What do you look for in a person
when searching candidates
to be interviewed?
We look for the story for the
most part, it’s not about the
person having a million tattoos
all over their body (although
it would help) we really look
for the story of the tattoo. One
tattoo can have a really deep
meaning versus someone who
has ten and no meaning.
Are you only interested in
tattoo artist, or are people that
have tattoos also subjects of
your film series?
We are interested in Interviewing
tattoo artist and people who
have tattoos, We have both in
the series.
What is the goal of the TAT-
TOO LIFE film series?
The goal of tattoo life is to let
people that don’t have tattoos
know that tattoos are a form of
expression, a form of meaning
to the people that have them.
People that have tattoos all have
stories behind them, sad stories,
funny stories, religious stories
etc. It’s not always a gang thing,
Tattoos are also a remembrance
to peoples memories. My goal
for the series is to let people all
over the world know that tattoos
are a strong art form that needs
to be respected.
Who are some of the people that have been interviewed by you?
We have interviewed Rene Soto who has been tattooing for 30
years. Rene has tattooed De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Brand Nubian
and 2pac Shakur. We Interviewed a woman (say_nay) with a
disease called Lupus and how tattoos play a part in her recovery
process. We interviewed a former porn star (Lethal Lips) as she
tells her upbringing and how she got into the porn industry, also
how she used her fame and turned it into a business. We also interviewed
2pac’s brother (Mopreme Shakur) Mopreme talks about
the rap game and breaks down 2pac’s iconic tattoos plus his own.
How has Tattoo Life been recognized by the media, industry
and other film makers, and what affect has that had on the
direction of the series?
Tattoo Life has been recognized by the media through the film
festivals we have entered, which were the Hip-Hop film festival
(which won 2 awards, one for best Web Series and best New
Media) we were also selected for the Newark International film
festival (we were nominated for best web series) These accolades have some people in the film industry willing and ready to
help Tattoo Life find a home.
What has been the highlight for you since you began on this journey?
The highlight for me personally was going to California and sitting down with Mopreme Shakur, as he told the story and
meaning of 2pac’s tattoos. Mopreme’s story of him being in the entertainment industry and his outlook on life.
Are you, yourself a tattoo collector, or just an admirer of ink?
I am a tattoo collector. I have a tattoo of John Lennon, Bob Marley, Celia Cruz, a tattoo of Ernesto Che Guevara, and lets
not forget the tattoo of my mom written across my left arm.
What do you think the secret is to being a great film maker?
I think the secret to being a great filmmaker is to have a great imagination, the love to tell a story, and the ability to entertain.
Words of advice for anyone that wants to become a visual artist?
My advise to anyone wanting to become a visual artist is to not have fear, to tell a story you yourself would want to see
because chances are other people would want to see it to. Love the process of film and have passion, if you have those two
things it will get you through the hard times. Also learn the different techniques of filmmaking.
Where can see more of your work?
You can see my work at my website (www.Gilrios1.com) and my Instagram (also @Gilrios1) you can also see the my Partner
What direction do you see rap music going
in the next 2-5 years?
I see it still going in a even more commercial
direction.
What do you think about the state of hip
hop today?
Unbalanced, too many rappers, not enough
MCs.
How do you feel about the new artist,
mumble rappers and will it be around in
the future?
I like a few of them but most in my opinion
are terrible.I hope it's around in the future so
me and my partner can leave a huge dent in
it.
The late great Prodigy of Mobb Deep.
Who are you listening to right now?
J.Cole, Crooked I, Royce 5'9 but honestly
mostly my man Jay Hill. His music belongs in
the Hip-Hop catalogs.
I'm The Support is developed to provide a place for conversation for those who need support for themselves
after being the support. Sometimes the only support for someone else, no one realizes or takes into
consideration that there are people that are struggling to deal with the outside world and even their own
inner circles. One of our main goals is to establish a dialogue with members of the heterosexual community
that are faced with that situation of standing by a family member or friend that has confided in them.
We want people that find themselves in similar situations facing the same issues, to come and have a place
to talk about how it effects their life in whatever way, positive or negative, with people that that completely
understand because they live it also.
I'm The Support are members of the heterosexual community that offer support to the straight community
that support and struggle with trying to support family and friends that are a part of the LGBTQ
