The City of Derry Jazz & Big Band
Festival is back for its 17th year. The
annual celebration of jazz and big bands
will feature artists from all over the world
and welcome more than 60,000 revellers
over the bank holiday weekend. We’ve
got some returning festival favourites
as well as new acts, including Dinosaur,
Heavy Beat Brass Band, Red Stripe
Band, The Ska Beat, Roaring Forties,
Revolutionaires, Kaz Hawkins and many

The multi award winning singer,
composer and performer will be
showcasing songs from his most recent
studio albums Roll with the Punches
and Versatile - as well as dipping
into some of his greatest and best
known hits from undoubtedly one of
the most revered back catalogues
in music history. One of very few
British recording artists to warrant the
description ‘living legend’, Van is
currently working at a rate to put
musicians a third of his age to shame;
an ethic that harks back to his early
days as a recording artist who’d easily

In a one-off event for the City of Derry
Jazz & Big Band Festival, two of London’s
leading saxophonists join forces to
pay respect to the legendary album
‘Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago.’
Leo Richardson is widely recognised to
be one of London’s leading jazz tenor
saxophonists, best known for his honest,
straight-ahead, contemporary hard-bop
style.
“Combining simplicity of melody with
sophisticated detail and hints of Traneish
spirituality...Harrison is one to watch”.

Jessica Radcliffe
Jessica Radcliffe is one of British Jazz’s
rising vocal talents. Now just 26, Jessica is
recognised by both musicians and fans alike
due to her respect for the jazz tradition,
powerful sense of swing and outstanding
musicianship. As a composer, Jessica is
Musical Director of ‘The Remembrance
Project’, featuring the multi-award-winning
Mark Lockheart, the project is based on
her in-depth study of the First World War.
Jessica’s debut album will be released in
2018 on the prestigious Ubuntu Music label.

SPOTLIGHT ON JAZZ
David Lyttle Trio
Drummer David Lyttle is Ireland’s most
celebrated jazz musician of today. He’s
the island’s only MOBO Award nominee
and he keeps a constantly global diary.
At this year’s festival he’ll perform at
Bennigans with his outstanding standards
trio, featuring the iconic guitarist Kurt
Rosenwinkel, and at the Playhouse with his
original music trio in a double bill with one
of his protégés, Derry’s hugely talented
rising star guitarist Joseph Leighton.
Dinosaur
Dinosaur is one of the most vital and
creative new instrumental bands in Europe.
Shortlisted for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury
Prize for their “masterful Jazz album”,
‘Together, As One’, the vibrant ensemble,
led by trumpeter and BBC New Generation
Artist, Laura Jurd, has risen to widespread
prominence garnering huge acclaim and
attention from the world’s media. Dinosaur
is a versatile and dynamic creature that
cultivates the rich history of rhythmic music
whilst entering new terrain with a sense of
joyful curiosity and inventiveness.
A new album due for release in May 2018,
followed by further extensive touring will no
doubt shoot the band into the international
stratosphere. Dinosaur is the new British
jazz supergroup making music that could
not be made by any other band.

Showbands of the North West

Funded by Derry City & Strabane District
Council’s Museum Service, this new
exhibition for 2018 includes photographs
and memorabilia from the 1950s, 60s & 70s
– the ‘golden era’ of the showbands. It will
be on show from the 2nd May in the
Guildhall for the Jazz Festival and touring
other venues across the North West,

An exciting addition to this year’s City
of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival is the
Darren Beckett Masterclass. Open to all
musicians, the world renowned drummer,
who has worked with names such as Lauryn
Hill and Brandon Flowers, will impart his
experience and knowledge on how to play
dynamically and musically in a jazz setting.

Gillard is a tenor saxophonist and composer
making an impact on the European jazz
scene. This workshop will cover topics like
tone production, style and phrasing, motivic
development, melodic/harmonic/rhythmic
language, interplay, listening, and talk about
different ways to practice using a popular
jazz standard as a template.

EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Following the success of last year’s
schools programme, Live Music Now
musicians will once again visit primary
schools across Derry and Strabane to
bring a taste of live jazz to hundreds of
children.
Schools are in for a treat, with the
incredible voice of festival favourite
Victoria Geelan together with Neil Burns
on piano, as well as the rising talent of
double bassist Jack Kelly and the sweet
voiced Maya Goldblum. Between them
the musicians will visit 12 primary schools
between March and the start of May.
School children will be introduced to jazz
through some family soundtracks and will
have lots of fun making up their very own
blues riff!
In addition, two lucky P7 classes at
Rosemount PS will get the chance to work
with Maya Goldblum and Jack Kelly on a
six-week programme to create their very
own pop up Jazz Festival in school, with
David Lyttle taking on a mentoring role.

Dave Duggan is bringing a new
comedy to the city as part of the
2018 programme. Starring the
music of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis
Armstrong and more, the play
swings to the rhythm of that
moment in life when the young
leave the nest. With Orla Mullan
as Donna and Conor O’Kane as
Chezzie and a trio led by ace
trumpeter, broadcaster and
jazz academic, Linley Hamilton.
‘Chezzie’s Chance’, written and directed by
Dave Duggan, is a Blue Eagle and City of
Derry Jazz Festival production, produced
by Jonathan Burgess with the support of
the City of Derry Jazz Festival and The Arts
Council of Northern Ireland.
