neworleans, leader and home for best practices
in economic development
When great minds meet, we can expect great ideas
to happen. This is why NOLABA, the official economic
development agency for the city of New Orleans,
has developed a series of events to create social and
intellectual settings that connect bright minds from
the academic, private and public sectors.
NOLABA expects to elevate the conversation and
find solutions to some of our city?s most pressing issues.
Also, through these events, New Orleans will
be able to position itself as a city of thought leaders
and a home to best practices in economic development.
The first event within the series will be the Vanguard
conference September 12-15, 2018. NOLABA will cohost
the conference alongside Next City, a nonprofit
organization with a mission to inspire social, economic
and environmental change to improve cities
around the world.
Solving challenges is a multidisciplinary endeavor,
which is why leaders with different backgrounds will
be selected to participate.
About 800 participants have been part of past Vanguard
conferences, and they all bring a wide variety
of experiences.
The conference will include workshops, tours and
conversations about trends to solve relevant issues
around creating better cities. Participants will also
have the opportunity to work with organizations to
solve local challenges.
The program will culminate with the Next City Big
Idea Challenge where a winning idea will be selected
and implemented in New Orleans in the following
year.
Applications for the 2018 Vanguard conference are
open until May 31. The application fee is $35, but a
reduced early bird fee of $25 is available until April
21.
nueva orleans - líder y sede de mejores prácticas
para el desarrollo ecónomico
Cuando grandes mentes se conectan, podemos
esperar grandes ideas.
mejores ciudades.
Además, los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de
trabajar con organizaciones para brindar soluciones
a retos locales.
WHAT IS ALS?
HEALTH
CHECK
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to
as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative
disease that affects nerve cells in the
brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from
the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord
to the muscles throughout the body.
The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons
in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor
neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and
control muscle movement is lost.
With voluntary muscle action progressively affected,
patients in the later stages of the disease may become
totally paralyzed.
A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A"
means no or negative. "Myo" refers to muscle, and
"Trophic" means nourishment- "No muscle
nourishment."
When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or
wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's
spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells
that signal and control the muscles are located. As
this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening
("sclerosis") in the region.
As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer
send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result
in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS
often include increasing muscle weakness, especially
involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing
or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the
messages from the motor neurons that they require
to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become
smaller). Limbs begin to look "thinner" as muscle tissue
atrophies.
Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood,
the recent years have brought a wealth of new
scientific understanding regarding the physiology of
this disease.
While there is not a cure or treatment today that halts
or reverses ALS, there is one FDA approved drug
that modestly slows the progression of ALS. There
are significant devices and therapies that can manage
the symptoms of ALS that help people maintain
as much independence as possible and prolong survival.
There are medically documented cases of people in
whom ALS 'burns out,' stops progressing or progresses
at a very slow rate.
In our city, we have a champion who is not only trying
to live and thrive while dealing with this condition,
but who is using his fame to raise awareness
and funds for research, and to bring hope to others
with ALS.
Steve Gleason played for The New Orleans Saints
from 2000-2008. Gleason will always be remembered
for his blocked punt on the night the Louisiana
Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane
Katrina.
In January, 2011 Steve was diagnosed with ALS,
considered a terminal neuromuscular disease.
Beyond his faith that there is a solution to heal,
it is his mission to show that people can
live and thrive after this
diagnosis.
Steve and his wife, Michel,
formed ?Team Gleason?
to help him accomplish those
goals and more.
¿QUÉ ES LA ELA?
La esclerosis lateral amiotrófica
(ELA), a menudo denominada
"enfermedad de Lou Gehrig", es
una enfermedad neurodegenerativa
progresiva que afecta las células
nerviosas del cerebro y la
médula espinal. Las neuronas
motoras llegan desde el cerebro a
la médula espinal y desde la médula
espinal a los músculos de todo
el cuerpo.
La degeneración progresiva de las
neuronas motoras en ALS finalmente
conduce a su muerte.
Cuando las neuronas motoras
mueren, la capacidad del cerebro
para iniciar y controlar el movimiento
muscular se pierde.
Con la acción muscular voluntaria
progresivamente afectada, los pacientes
en las últimas etapas de la
enfermedad pueden quedar totalmente
paralizados.
A-myo-trófico proviene del idioma
griego. "A" significa no o negativo.
"Myo" se refiere a los músculos, y
"trófico" significa nutrición: "sin alimentación
muscular". Cuando un
músculo no se nutre, se "atrofia" o
se desperdicia.
"Lateral" identifica las áreas en la
médula espinal de una persona
donde se encuentran partes de
las células nerviosas que señalan
y controlan los músculos. A medida
que esta área se degenera,
provoca cicatrices o endurecimiento
("esclerosis") en la región.
A medida que las neuronas motoras
degeneran, ya no pueden enviar
impulsos a las fibras musculares
que normalmente provocan
el movimiento muscular. Los primeros
síntomas de la ELA a menudo
incluyen un aumento de la
debilidad muscular, especialmente
Existen
casos documentados médicamente
de personas en las que la
ELA "desaparece", deja de progresar
o progresa a un ritmo muy
lento.
En nuestra ciudad tenemos un
campeón que no solo intenta vivir
y prosperar al lidiar con esta enfermedad,
sino que también usa
su fama para crear conciencia,
recoger fondos para investigación
y levantar las esperanzas de otras
personas con ELA.
Steve Gleason fue un jugador de
los New Orleans Saints del 2000
al 2008. Gleason siempre será recordado
por haber detenido una
patada de balón la noche en la
que el Superdome abrió sus puertas
por primera vez luego del huracán
Katrina.
En el 2011 Steve fue diagnosticado
con ELA. Mas allá de su esperanza
por encontrar la recuperación,
su misión es mostrar a otros
pacientes que se puede no solo
vivir, sino prosperar después del
diagnóstico.
Steve y su esposa Michel formaron
la fundación ?Team Gleason?
para ayudarle a cumplir esta meta.
¡ADOPTA, NOCOMPRES!
PETS
MASCOTAS
De acuerdo con un
sondeo realizado por la
Asociación Americana
de Productos de
Mascotas en el
2017-2018, 68% de los
hogares de estados
unidos, alrededor de 85
millones de familias,
tienen mascota.
La triste realidad es que,
para prevenir una
saturación de animales
callejeros en Estados
Unidos, se sacrifican vía
eutanasia 2,7 millones
de mascotas al año, una
gran cifra de animales
que perfectamente
podrían ser adoptados
para convertirse en
miembros de una familia
y recibir cuidados y
amor.
La mayoría de los
animales que llegan a
los albergues son
mascotas que han sido
abandonadas por
alguna situación
dramática para sus
previos dueños. Muchos
de estos animales ya
estaban acostumbrados
a formar parte de un
hogar, por lo cual, la
meta de los albergues
es encontrarles un
hogar rápidamente.
Adoptar una mascota no
solo representa salvar
una vida, sino que
también permite un
ahorro monetario, pues
los albergues se
encargan de costos de
esterilización, primeras
vacunas, y en algunos
casos, hasta los costos
de un microchip;
procesos que ya están
incluidos en la cuota de
adopción.
Adoptar mascotas
también es una forma de
combatir las debatidas
fábricas de cachorros
que ponen las ganancias
comerciales por encima
del bienestar de las
mascotas. Los animales
de fábrica usualmente
son mantenidos en
condiciones deplorables
sin acceso a cuidados de
salud y las madres
permanecen enjauladas
con el único propósito de
ser usadas para aparear
y procrear.
Las personas que
compran sus mascotas
en una tienda tradicional
muchas veces no se
enteran del origen de los
animales y se convierten,
sin querer, en
auspiciadores de este
tipo de negocios.
En los días de adopción
que se realizan en
diferentes partes de la
ciudad, usted puede
encontrar tanto animales
de pedigree, como las
mezclas más extrañas y
simpáticas de razas.
Lo cierto es que al
adoptar, usted salva la
vida del animal, ayuda a
los albergues que
muchas veces están
saturados, y gana la
compañía incondicional
de su nuevo mejor
amigo.
adopt, don't shop!
According to a survey completed
by the American Pet Product
Association in 2017-2018, 68% of
America?s households, or the
equivalent to 85 million families,
own a pet.
To prevent a proliferation of stray
animals around 2.7 million pets
are sacrificed in shelters via euthanasia
per year, a disturbing
reality. The majority of the sacrificed
animals could have been
adopted and become members of
a family willing to provide them
with care and love.
Most animals that make it to the
shelters have been abandoned
due to a change of circumstances
of their owners. Many of the animals
that end up in shelters are
already used to belonging in a family,
so the shelters?goal is to
quickly find them a new home.
By adopting a pet, people not only
save a life, but they also save money.
Most shelters cover the spay
and neuter fees and the costs of
the first vaccines, and in some cases
shelters even provide animals
with microchips. The pets up for
adoption are ready to go home, all
for a basic adoption fee.
Adopting a pet also serves as a
way of fighting against puppy mills
that put commercial profit over the
well- being of pets. Animals from
puppy mills are kept in deplorable
conditions without access to health
care.
People who buy pets from pet
shops do not know where the animals
come from and could unknowingly
become supporters of
puppy mills.
During the adoption days that take
place in different parts of the city
you can find all kinds of animals
that range from animals with pedigree
to the strangest and cutest
mixed breeds.
When you adopt, there's is only
one certain thing: you save an
animal?s life and in return, you gain
the unconditional loyalty of your
new best friend.
Edgar Caro and
Antonio Mata met soon
after they arrived in
NewOrleans. Years
business associates
who are nowready to
inaugurate their third
restaurant.

While attending Delgado Community College, Edgar
Caro and Antonio Mata became close friends, which
was preserved during their student years and strengthened
as they grew as adults.
Mata, a Salvadoran native, focused on his education,
continuing his undergraduate degree in Finance from
the University of New Orleans.
Even though he worked as a waiter during summers in
Missouri, and at the restaurant Azul in New Orleans, his
objective was always to find a job in corporate America
and climb the corporate ladder. As Mata attended college,
a Chef was being made.
Caro opted to use real world experience as his school
and began working in the kitchen of Cooter Brown?s. It
was there he learned the basics of the business. Caro
worked in various positions and was quickly captivated
by the service industry.
He has fond memories of his experience at Veracruz, a
restaurant that served the college crowd and a job where
the owner trusted him to freely manage the place.
After other ventures, Caro was seduced by fine-dining
during his time at the steakhouse The Living Room in
Uptown. ?I fell in love with that environment, with fine
dining, with high end service, with bourbon and with fine
wines,? confessed the Chef.
Chef Caro later gained recognition with his hit Latin
American restaurant Barú Tapas on Magazine Street.
Inspired by the flavors of his native city of Cartagena in
Colombia and refining his extensive knowledge in various
areas of the business, with Barú, Caro revolutionized
the expectation of Latin American cuisine in the city.
Antonio Mata watched his friend?s success while working
as the manager of the French Quarter artisan stores
Latin?s Hand. With his aspirations of growing in management,
he went on to pursue an MBA. His other
wish was to apply his business knowledge in a venture
with his friend Caro, but there had been failed attempts
at securing a venue.
?I had given up and thought my only option was to seek
a corporate career in Miami or Houston. Two weeks before
my MBA graduation, Edgar called me," said Mata,
as he remembered how the opportunity to open a restaurant
together finally came true. The Caro-Mata
partnership was solidified with their first business, Basin
Seafood & Spirits, where all finance theories Mata learned
in school were tested.
Basin offered traditional New Orleans dishes? a category
with fierce competition that forced the co-owners to
find creative ways to stand out. Basin served as a training
ground for the two men and made their partnership
stronger.
They learned essential industry lessons like the importance
of consolidating a skilled kitchen team, and the
need to design a delicious, but cost-effective menu.
The administrator and the Chef realized catering to different
crowds and experimenting with strategies to attract
customers was necessary to survive. ?We understood
how to satisfy our customers without compromising
our integrity,? explained Caro about turning the restaurant
around while preserving his vision.
The partners overcame hardships with perseverance
and dedication. A couple of years after opening,
the Magazine Street restaurant
became a favorite place for
brunch, a preferred location for
cocktails, and a main destination
for fresh oysters. After the
rigorous training at Basin, where
Mata even learned to cook, the
duo launched their second
venture, Brasa Churrasquería last
June.
This fine dining concept was ideal
for the affluent crowd of Old
Metairie, where the co-owners
quickly seduced a clientele
Edgar Caro y Antonio Mata
se conocieron tomando clases
de ingles, recién llegados a
Nueva Orleans. Ahora son socios
comerciales que se alistan
para inaugurar juntos su tercera
propuesta de restaurante.
Su amistad se conservó durante
su época de estudiantes, y se
afianzó a medida que formaban
su vida de adultos. Antonio Mata,
originario de El Salvador, se concentró
en su educación continuando
con un pregrado en finanzas
de la Universidad de New Orleans,
y aunque tuvo experiencia
en el restaurante Azul, en la ciudad,
y en Missouri como mesero,
su objetivo siempre fue subir la
escalera corporativa.
Mientras Mata cursaba la universidad,
se formaba el Chef Edgar
Caro.
?Me enamoré
de ese ambiente, de la alta cocina,
del servicio de lujo, del bourbon
y de los vinos finos?: confiesa
Caro.
Chef Caro ganó reconocimiento
con su gran acierto, el restaurante
latino americano Barú, en
la calle Magazine, inspirado en
los sabores de su natal Cartagena,
en Colombia. Mientras refinaba
su conocimiento del negocio,
con Barú consiguió revolucionar
las expectativas de la cocina
latinoamericana en la ciudad.
Antonio Mata veía y admiraba el
éxito de su amigo, mientras administraba
las tiendas de artesanías
Latin?s Hand, en el barrio
francés. Con la ambición de crecer
en el mundo administrativo,
regresó a la universidad para
obtener su MBA, pero de lejos
contemplaba la idea de iniciar un
negocio junto a Caro. ?Yo había
desistido y pensé que mi única
opción era empezar una carrera
corporativa en Miami o Houston.
Dos semanas antes de graduarme
me llamó Edgar?: Expresa
Mata. La noticia de abrir juntos
un nuevo restaurante en la calle

Magazine cambió totalmente los
planes.
La sociedad Caro- Mata se
afianzó con Basin Seafood &
Spirits, el restaurante de mariscos
y comida típica de Nueva Orleans
que puso a prueba todas
las teorías financieras aprendidas
por Mata. ?Yo me fui al cien por
ciento ahí a aprender sin que nadie
me enseñara como manejar
un restaurante?, recuerda Mata.
Chef Caro también aprendió importantes
lecciones con el restaurante.
La competencia en ese
campo era difícil, lo cual forzó a
los propietarios a conseguir maneras
creativas de sobresalir.
Caro y Mata aprendieron en Basin
la importancia de conformar
un buen equipo de cocina y diseñar
menús que fueran no solo
exquisitos, sino también de costo
efectivo. El Chef y el administrador
tuvieron que buscar la manera
de darle al cliente lo que el
cliente quería, pero sin abandonar
su concepto. ?Nosotros
entendimos como satisfacer al
cliente sin sacrificar nuestra integridad?:
asegura Caro.
Superando los momentos difíciles
con perseverancia y entrega, Caro
y Mata lograron sacar Basin
adelante. A los pocos años, el
restaurante de Magazine se convirtió
en un sitio favorito para
brunch y cócteles durante 'Happy
Hour?, y un destino para disfrutar
ostras frescas.
Con el rígido entrenamiento de
Basin donde a Mata le tocó hasta
aprender a cocinar, el par de
amigos lanzaron Brasa Churrasquería,
un concepto de alta cocina
en la zona del viejo Metairie.
Los copropietarios sedujeron rápidamente
a un público que estaba
anteriormente acostumbrado a
opciones de cocina europea.
Brasa Churrasquería entró en el
sector ofreciendo cortes finos de
carnes al estilo sudamericano,
con la particularidad de ser el
único restaurante del área en cocinar
en un horno de leña tradicional.
Brasa también ofrece una carta
selecta de vinos y una variedad
de cócteles exóticos que han impactado
con los clientes frecuentes.
Antonio Mata asegura que
?en Old Metairie existe una generación
de profesionales dispuestos
a probar nuevos sabores.?
En menos de un año de operación,
Brasa
Churrasquería
se ha convertido
en uno de
los restaurantes
más codiciados
del área, y en
un sueño hecho
realidad para
Mata y Caro,
quienes lograron
exitosamente
desarrollar
un concepto
de alta cocina
que incluye
preferencias personales y que
representa la cultura en la que
crecieron.
Al preguntarles sobre próximos
proyectos, Chef Caro rápidamente
asegura: ?La respuesta
lógica es un restaurante mexicano.
- Mi restaurante
mexicano-.?
Y eso es exactamente lo que
los socios están cocinando.
Mata y Caro viajaron por la región
de Oaxaca y la Ciudad de
México para buscar autenticidad
como inspiración para Zócalo
Cocina y Cantina, su nuevo proyecto.
Zócalo estará dirigido a los jóvenes
profesionales y sus familias
con una atmósfera agradable,
que se está diseñando en el antiguo
local de Vega Tapas.
Tortillas hechas a mano, platos
tradicionales y comida inspirada
por los puestos callejeros serán
ofrecidos junto a una gran variedad
de marcas de mezcal y tequila.
?Vamos a mantener precios
asequibles y a crear un diseño
divertido para este lugar?, asegura
Mata.
Zócalo Cocina Mexicana y Cantina
se convertirá fácilmente en el
próximo éxito de los arduos negociantes
y abrirá sus puertas a
finales de la primavera.
VIVIR MEJOR
By Andrea Mejía
de Greater New Orleans.
New Orleans, y escuchándolas pensé: ?El próximo
historias.
tenacidad".
Challenge yourself to grow!
I had the opportunity to participate in the Women in
Business Challenge, presented by the Urban League
of New Orleans during the month of March.
It was such an enriching experience! Last year, I was
sitting in the audience during New Orleans Entrepreneur
Week watching the women present their companies
during the challenge, and while listening to
their stories I thought, ?next year, I want to stand there
and tell my own story.? And I did exactly that.
I applied to the program, participated, and was
among the four finalists this year. My public-speaking
fear was challenged. I would have never thought that
I could stand in front of three hunderd people who
were gathered to listen to our stories.
The Women in Business Challenge is a great opportunity
for women business owners to compete for a
prize of ten thousand dollars. During the challenge
entrepreneurs also receive a 9-week training session
to learn how to make their business grow.
I knew what I wanted to accomplish when I started
my own company Sensa Design, but I was clueless
as to what approach to follow to make it there.
After going through this learning experience, I feel
ready to take the next step and aim my company in
the right direction. I learned about finance, social media,
and human resources, among many other things.
I understood the importance of writing down a business
plan and setting the mission and values of the
company. Having these tools is essential to focus and
keep the business in the right track.
I was proud to represent my community and to be the
first Latina participating in the challenge.
All women business owners who are reading this note
should take a moment and contact Klassi Duncan
from the Urban League of Greater New Orleans to
get into this program. Remember the words of Amelia
Earhart: ?The most difficult thing is the decision
to act, the rest is merely tenacity.?

NOLA
By Christopher Ard
brown like me
If you spoke with me on the phone, you?d have no
idea I was half-Mexican. However, because of genetic
luck, many people who see me on the street greet me
with ?What?s up, mi amigo!?
I like to tell people I got the brown gene in my family.
You can see it in my eyes, my hair, and my skin tone?
but mostly in the summer. There was another famous
New Orleans resident whose brown gene made
him famous. Benito Juárez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico,
in 1806. Having Zapotec heritage, he became a
hero of Mexico for separating the church and state,
and for his native American heritage. In the mid-
1850?s, Benito was exiled for his liberal views and like
most other liberals lost in the world, ended up in New
Orleans? twice.
The story has it that Benito lived in New Orleans for
about three years. Although he was a lawyer in Mexico,
Benito?s life was anything but luxurious here in
New Orleans. At one point he rolled cigars on St. Peter
Street in the Quarter. He lived a life of poverty in New
Orleans until he returned to Mexico to kick out the foreign
rulers and transform his country into a modern
nation.
Many believe that it was his time here in New Orleans
that influenced his thoughts on inequality and race.
53 years ago from April 22nd to the 29th, New Orleans
celebrated ?Mexico Week? as the city prepared
to dedicate a statue of Benito Juárez on Basin Street.
The city welcomed a delegation of 100 representatives
from Mexico to help throw the party.
To thank New Orleans for the hospitality shown to
their hero, Mexico commissioned an artist
to create an enormous statue of Juárez which today
still stands on Basin and St. Louis Streets
? known as the Garden of the Americas. During the
dedication of the statue, former Mexican Ambassador
to the United States, Hugo B. Margain, said this,
?Juárez is here, not as a mere gift from one nation to
another, but as a reminder to young and old, that the
humblest of origins is no impediment to greatness; that
poverty of worldly goods can be overcome by spiritual
wealth.?
That brings me back to the beginning of this story? my
NEXT TIME YOU?RE DRIVINGDOWN
BASIN STREET, LOOK UP AT THE
STATUE OF BENITOJUÁREZ? NATIVE
AMERICAN PRESIDENT OF
MEXICO? AND REMEMBER THAT HE
WAS JUST A POOR ?BROWN? KID FROM
A SMALL TOWN IN MEXICO?
"
"
I have my mother to thank for my indigenous
looks. She was the first of her family born in New
Orleans? Charity Hospital to be exact.
My grandfather named her Tomasa, after his own
mother who was back in Nuevo León, Mexico, not
knowing the impact her name and skin tone would
have on a little girl in a seemingly Mexican- less
New Orleans.
My own name is English because my father
wouldn?t allow a Mexican name on his children. It
was the 1970s after all.
Last month, for Semana Santa, I took my mother
on her first trip to Mexico City and Guanajuato,
Mexico. I couldn?t wait to see how she would
handle walking around in a land where her face
and name aren?t foreign.
In Mexico, there is a word which means ?disasterous,
worst- ever, unimaginable, or chaotic?. The
word is ?desmadre?? which literally means without
mother. My mom taught me to ignore the namecalling
and to be proud of being Mexican while at
the same time identifying with what I was experiencing.
One of the stops on our trip was to a
statue in Guanajuato dedicated to another Mexican
hero-El Pípila. And just to tie this story together,
New Orleans? statue of Benito Juárez and
Guanajuato?s statue of El Pípila were both created
by the same artist? Juan Fernando Olaguibel.
So, the next time you?re driving down Basin Street,
look up at the statue of Benito Juárez? Native
American President of Mexico? and remember
that he was just a poor ?brown? kid from a small
town in Mexico? but that didn?t stop him from
getting a statue on Basin Street, and from
liberating a nation.
calle me dice "¡What?s up, mi amigo!?. A mí
de New Orleans.
New Orleans por tres años.
desigualdad y raza.
Estados Unidos Hugo B. Margain, dijo: ?Juárez no
en New Orleans
y la de El
Pípila en Guanajuato
fueron
creadas por el
mismo artista,
Juan Fernando
Olaguibel.
dirigen a México.
Fest.
Joaquín es un reconocido multiinstrumentalista
y entre sus varios
proyectos se encuentra el
grupo Vibra- Tó, que consiste en
hacer música con instrumentos
fabricados con materiales huecos
reciclados.
sola flauta!
No fue coincidencia disfrutar del
talento de Zopli2 en el SideBar
Nola, alrededor del Jazz Fest,
una época que nos trae el mejor
talento del mundo a nuestra
ciudad musical.

COINCIDENCES
I suppose coincidences do not exist. The duo Zopli2
[so-plee-dohs] visits New Orleans from Spain after a
layover in New York on their route to Mexico.
Clara Gallardo and Joaquín Sánchez, the artists in
the duo, began playing the clarinet at the age of 8.
Both have a passion for the flute and wind
instruments in general, and they also share a passion
for folkloric music from all over the world.
Though they were both born in Malaga, they only met
in December last year, when Clara returned to the
city after culminating her studies at the conservatory
in Holland.
Right after they met, Joaquín and Clara began
intense work sessions, practicing for 12 hours per
day to get ready for their first performance in the city
of Granada in January. A person from the audience at
that first show approached them to tell them she was
also a professional musician, and that she knew the
perfect place where they could go and play their
improvised pieces in New Orleans, where she lived.
This is how the duo ended up with a booked
performance at the SideBar Nola, just before Jazz
Fest.
Joaquín is a recognized multi-instrumentalist. Among
his many projects, he plays in the band Vibra-Tó, an
ensemble dedicated to making music with hollow
recycled materials.
Referring to the fact that improvisation in their pieces
fits perfectly with the improvisation that characterizes
jazz, our folkloric music, Joaquín assures ?it?s a
challenge improvising in a duo" as they need "to
accompany and fill the gaps" while it is only the two
of them creating all the sounds. Usually, they get
most of the attention when performing a piece where
they play one flute together!
It was no coincidence that we got to enjoy the talent
of Zopli2 at the SideBar Nola in our musical city
around the Jazz Fest, a time that brings us amazing
music from all over the world.
