International Air Show.

Another tremendous year is 

on the cards for you over this 

iconic four-day event. In store 

for visitors we have many 

well-known favourites, from 

the unbelievable Breitling 

Wingwalkers to the astonishing 

Blades display team. 

A real focal point for this 

memorable year is the Belgian 

Air Force F-16. It’s an absolute 

treat to have the ‘Blizzard’ 

returning. 

Among the extraordinary flying 

line up we have the Chinook 

returning for another year, 

the Red Arrows for three days, 

the Battle of Britain Memorial 

Flight with the Lancaster, 

Hurricane and Spitfire, the 

Tigers parachute display team 

and many more. 

The four-day event doesn’t just 

stop in the air. Make sure you 

visit the showground featuring a 

host of displays and exhibitions, 

as well as simulators and replica 

aircraft, along with many more 

attractions for the whole family. 

New for this spectacular year we 

have a very special guest joining 

us at Airbourne. Welcome Ace 

the AirBear, who is making his 

debut appearance over the 

four-day event. 

He’s been busy visiting schools 

to spread the word about 

Airbourne and will be collecting 

for this year’s good causes. 

Every afternoon we have a film 

being shown on the big screen 

on the beach, across the four 

days: Trolls, Paddington, Planes: 

Fire & Rescue and The Jungle 

Book will be aired. 

To end this phenomenal event 

and send the 25th year off 

with a bang we have the much 

adored Fireflies and Twister 

pyro-aerobatic teams lighting 

up our skies, followed by an 

array of fireworks lighting 

up over Eastbourne for the 

finale of 2017’s Air Show on 

Sunday night. 

My special thanks go to all of

Army and Royal Navy and to 

the Rotary clubs, and individual 

collectors for their assistance 

with our bucket collection. Your

I would like to welcome you to our dedicated 

Armed Forces exhibition on the Western 

Lawns. It is a privilege to be invited to this 

prestigious annual event. This is the 25th 

Anniversary of this aviation extravaganza 

celebrating both military and civilian 

aircraft from the past and present. 

The coming year will see continued work 

towards new innovations and cutting edge 

technology that will no doubt include 

significant change to the services. This will 

ultimately transform the way that all three 

services operate and ensure that we are 

equipped to deal with the new challenges that 

undoubtedly lie ahead. We will continue to 

play an essential role in the security of UK 

interests, both at home and the wider 

global environment. 

On a personal note, I particularly look 

forward to the fast approaching RAF 

Centenary on 1st April 2018. I encourage 

you all to help us commemorate our 

achievements and all those who have 

served, celebrate the RAF of today and 

inspire the future members of the RAF. 

The Royal Navy, British Army and

A259 linking Hastings, Dover and the Channel Tunnel, A259 & A27 

from Brighton. To smooth journeys from Brighton and the West 

use the A27 rather than the A259. NB: Traffic controls will be in 

place at Exceat Bridge (BN25 4AB) 16:00 - 20:00 from

Eastbourne station from 16:00-20:00. Customers are advised that the 

concourse will be closed at this time while we have large crowds waiting 

to travel, please follow directions from the station staff. 

Please allow plenty of time for connections. Train times subject to 

change/cancellation.

National Cycle Network Route 21 plus FREE cycle park at 

Howard Square on Grand Parade. 

LOST PERSON / MEETING POINT 

The lost person’s marquee and meeting point is located on 

Wilmington Square. (See page 6).

There are 9 toilet facilities located between the Western Lawns 

and Marine Parade. (See site map, page 6). 

FIRST AID 

British Red Cross treatment centres are based along King Edwards 

Parade at The Bandstand & The Lifeboat Museum with mobile first 

aid teams and ambulances available around the event site. Our main 

treatment facility is based at the rear of Wilmington Square.

Visit the main Tourist Information Centre on Cornfield Road for 

any queries or information you may need. Open Thursday/Friday 

09:00-17:30, Saturday 09:00-17:00 and Sunday 10:00-13:00.

NB: The operation of remote controlled devices on and around 

the site of Eastbourne International Air Show including drones is 

forbidden by the Civil Aviation Authority and Eastbourne Borough 

Council. Balloons and bicycles are not permitted in the event site. 

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AT AIRBOURNE 

In the event of an emergency at Airbourne there will be messages 

relayed on the Public Address system. Please listen to these 

carefully and follow the instructions of police officers and the 

event stewards in yellow tabards. Should the seafront need to be 

evacuated this should take place in an orderly fashion and will 

be in a north west or east direction on the designated routes or 

as directed by Sussex Police. YOU SHOULD NOT RE-ENTER THE 

CLEARED AREA UNTIL INSTRUCTED THAT IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. 

At all times please adhere to all warning notices, comply with the 

instructions from stewards and stay behind any barrier and fence 

lines as these are there for your own safety.

rare sight in the UK and nice and noisy!”

the Harrier GR7. This was the first year it 

appeared at Airbourne (1999). I was always

to the crowd at the end of its display. We

2017 MARKS THE 53rd SEASON FOR 

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE AEROBATIC TEAM 

RED 

ARROWS 

One of the world’s premier aerobatic display 

teams, they are the public face of the Service 

and represent the United Kingdom at home and 

overseas. With a trademark combination of 

close formation flying and dynamic loops and 

rolls, the team has been displaying since 1965. 

During 2017, the team plans to carry out more than 60 

displays across the UK and beyond. The season, which 

runs from June, will feature an aerobatic show lasting 

18 minutes. This show features a first half of largeformation, 

precision moves, with a more dynamic 

second half. 

The nine-aircraft aerobatic display team is led by 

Red 1, Squadron Leader David Montenegro, for his 

third and final year. 

A number of new moves have been added to the 

2017 display. Look out for the Wall arrival with 

signature red, white and blue smoke and an 

adapted Tornado manoeuvre which will now 

twist in front of the crowd, with Reds 8 and 9 

rolling around the lead section’s smoke! The 

signature Diamond is back and an Infinity 

Break finale, a manoeuvre not flown for 

several seasons!

BELGIAN 

F-16 

The Lockheed-Martin F-16 MLU registered FA-123 of the Belgian 

Air Force Solo Display Team is nicknamed the “Blizzard”. 

Delivered for the first time in 1979, the Fighting Falcon has 

been in service for more than 35 years in the Belgian Air Force. 

Its examples are among the oldest still in service, but thanks to 

major upgrades they remain very capable fighters. 


It was originally developed by General 

Dynamics for the United States Air 

Force. Designed as a lightweight 

fighter optimised for daytime dog 

fighting and ground attack, it evolved 

into a successful multi-role aircraft 

over the years. 

They have taken part in coalition 

air operations over the Balkans, 

Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, as well 

as the Baltic Air Policing initiative. 

The colour scheme you can see in 

the 2017 display today has been 

designed to show distinctive, 

contrasting colours in flight 

on the upper and lower side 

of the aircraft. The scheme 

was designed in different 

layers on which both the 

vortices and smoke are 

meant to superimpose and 

compliment the design.

The RAF Chinook Display 

Team, based at RAF Odiham 

in Hampshire, aims to 

demonstrate the RAF Chinook’s 

capabilities to you at this year’s 

Eastbourne Air Show. 

As well as part of the 2017 RAF Chinook 

Display Team, the crew are also part of a fully 

operational Squadron, where they combine 

their daily training demands with practising 

their display sequence. 

For 2017, the Display pilot is Flight Lieutenant Andy Smith 

with Flight Lieutenant Ed Peverell and Flight Lieutenant 

Ryan Stowe as co-pilots. 

The RAF operates the largest fleet of Ch-47 Chinook 

Support helicopters after the US Army, with 

approximately 60 aircraft. Due to its versatility, 

durability and presence the Chinook remains 

the helicopter of choice for UK forces operating 

worldwide and is continually being modified and 

upgraded to keep it at the forward edge of the 

battlefield. It can be operated in many diverse 

environments ranging from cold weather ‘arctic’ 

conditions to desert warfare operations. 

The Chinook is used primarily for trooping and 

for carrying internal and/or underslung loads 

and can carry up to 55 troops or 10 tonnes 

of freight. Secondary roles include search 

and rescue and casualty evacuation.

Whilst it is the pilot (Flt Lt Ryan 

Lawton) who displays the aircraft, 

he cannot even begin to do his job 

without the unfaltering commitment 

and backing of the dedicated group 

of professionals that make up 

the Typhoon Display Team. This 

year’s team, from 29(R) Squadron, 

comprises a specialist from every 

aircraft trade along with support 

and management teams to assist 

both the pilot and the trades, all 

of whom work closely together to 

bring you the dazzling spectacle 

that is the Typhoon Display. 

The Typhoon is a multi-role 

combat aircraft, capable 

of performing the full 

spectrum of air operations: 

from air policing, to peace 

support, through to high 

intensity conflict. It is a 

high performance, and 

extremely agile aircraft 

that allows the Royal Air 

Force to deliver combat 

air power wherever and 

whenever it is required.

BRITAIN 

Memorial Flight 

The mission of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is to maintain the 

priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order 

to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country, to 

promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations. 

Formed on 11 July 1957, the BBMF is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017. 

Today the BBMF is a household name and a national institution with a long established tradition 

of marking the end of World War II and those who bravely fought in it as a mark of respect. 

A dedicated unit, commanded by Squadron Leader Andy Millikin, it has its own headquarters, 

entrusted with caring for priceless assets of British aviation heritage. Keeping the last 

remaining examples of the legendary fighters which had won the Battle of Britain 

– The Hurricane and Spitfire – in the air. 

The Flight operates six Spitfires, two Hurricane Mk 2Cs, a Lancaster as well as a C47 Dakota and 

two Chipmunk aircraft. Today at the Eastbourne Air Show you will see the Spitfire, Hurricane 

and Lancaster. These aircraft can be regularly seen in the skies over the UK celebrating and 

commemorating public and military events from State occasions such as Trooping the 

Colour to major air displays and simple flypasts for public events.

CATALINA 

G-PBYA was originally ordered for the Royal Canadian Air Force as 

a Canso A amphibian, basically equivalent to the US Navy PBY-5A. 

It was built by Canadian Vickers at 

Cartierville, Quebec in 1943 and initially saw 

service with 9 (Bomber Reconnaissance) 

Squadron at Bella Bella on the British 

Columbia coast between Vancouver and 

Prince Rupert. It was finally struck off 

military charge on 25 May 1961, and in 

due course converted to carry internal 

tanks and also flew for a number of 

fire-fighting seasons during the 

mid-to late-1960s. 

She was eventually acquired by 

Duxford based Catalina Aircraft Ltd 

and operated by Plane Sailing Air 

Displays. The start of the 2005 

season saw G-PBYA still flying in 

its bright yellow, red and green 

colours but it was repainted in 

the May in its current scheme 

representing a wartime USAAF 

OA-10A Catalina 44-33915 

of the 8th Air Force 5th 

Emergency Rescue Squadron 

at Halesworth, Suffolk.

The world famous 

AeroSuperBatics team 

are the only aerobatic 

formation wingwalking 

team. They have been 

specialists in display flying 

for over 30 years! 

They perform a breathtaking 

sequence of acrobatic 

manoeuvres and handstands 

whilst strapped to the top 

wings of the team’s beautiful 

Boeing Stearman biplanes. The 

team pilots fly through a wellrehearsed, 

energetic routine 

as the wingwalkers wave at 

the crowd. These manoeuvres 

include, loops, rolls, stall turns 

and even inverted flight! During 

all of this, the wingwalkers 

experience speeds up to 150mph 

and ‘G’ forces of up to 4G! 

Wingwalking itself was a byproduct 

of World War I. When 

the fighting finished there was 

a surplus of planes snapped up 

by freshly skilled pilots who got 

creative performing stunts! In 

1918 an American flier called 

Ormer Locklear came up with 

a stunt that was guaranteed to 

wow the crowds: he would climb 

out of the aeroplane and walk 

along the wing and even climb 

from one aeroplane onto another 

and wingwalking was born! 

The Breitling Wingwalkers 

recreate the glamour, spectacle, 

sounds and atmosphere of those 

barnstorming days for you today!

Hispano HA-1112 

BUCHON 

The Buchon is essentially a Rolls-Royce Merlin-engined Messerschmitt Bf109. 

With a combination of ex-German airframe 

and British powerplant, the first prototype flew 

its maiden flight on 30 December 1954. This 

particular aircraft you see today was built by 

Hispano Aviacion in Seville in 1959. 

Its service history has yet to come to light but 

unit code 7-54 stamped into a panel on the wing 

indicates that the Buchon served with Ala 7 at 

Tablada and El Corpero, although it remains 

uncertain whether the aircraft saw combat in the 

Spanish Sahara. 

This aircraft was one of 27 purchased at auction 

from the Spanish Air Force by Spitfire Productions 

for use in the making of the 1968 film “Battle of 

Britain”. This Buchon was one of 11 taken by Texan 

pilot and aircraft collector Wilson C “Connie” 

Edwards as payment for flying services during 

the filming. It found its way back to Duxford in 

May 1996 and was sold to The Real Aircraft Co at 

Breighton in Yorkshire, who initiated a full rebuild 

to airworthy condition. Purchased by Spitfire Ltd in 

November 2006, she moved back to Duxford to be 

maintained by the Aircraft Restoration Company.

HURRICANE 

One of the “Famous Four” 

of the most important allied 

fighter aircraft of World 

War II and the unsung hero 

of the Battle of Britain. 

This aircraft was the creation of the 

great Sydney Camm in response 

to the RAF’s urgent requirement 

for a low wing monoplane fighter 

to balance the threat from Nazi 

Germany. It was originally built in 

1942 and was restored to stock 

Mk IIB fighter-bomber status, 

the only flying example of the 

famous ‘Hurri-bombers’. 

It was acquired by Hangar 

11 Collection in 2007 and 

underwent comprehensive 

restoration. Today she 

remains a firm favourite at 

air displays, representing 

such a rare version of this 

famous and much loved 

classic British fighter.

They are amongst the rarest of all warbirds.

SPITFIRE 

Mk IX 

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British singleseat 

fighter aircraft, used by the Royal Air 

Force and many other Allied countries 

before, during and after World War II. 

The Spitfire was built in many variants and 

produced in greater numbers than any other British 

aircraft. It was also the only British fighter to be in 

continuous production throughout the war. 

RR232 was built in Castle Bromwich by Vickers 

Armstrong and delivered to the RAF in 1944 

as an ‘HF.IX’ high altitude fighter where it was 

allocated to an anti-aircraft co-operation 

Squadron. It was then sold to the South 

African Air Force (SAAF) in 1948. She finally 

made it back to Britain in 1986 but it was 

not until 2001 that current owner Martin 

Phillips bought the aircraft and began a 

full restoration to airworthy condition 

that would take nearly 13 years! With 

parts having been sourced from myriad 

locations around the world.

1945 she saw active

and is still in flying 

condition today!

marshalling yards in Dresden 

on April 17th 1945, along with 

another 51 Mustangs! 

She’s passed through several 

hands since the War, including 

those of the Royal Swedish and 

Israeli Air Forces, she’s starred in the 

Hollywood film Memphis Belle, and 

is now owned by Robert Tyrrell and 

based at the Boultbee Flight Academy 

at Goodwood Aerodrome.

STRIKE 

MASTER 

‘425’ was the very last 

Strikemaster. It was 

intended as one part of a 

contract to supply ten to 

Sudan. However, due to an 

arms embargo only three 

got delivered. 

During 1984, the SOAF (Sultan of 

Oman’s Air Force) lost one of its 

Strikemaster aircraft in a flying 

accident, and it later placed an 

order for a replacement with BAe 

(British Aerospace). A new plane 

was constructed using various 

stored components left over from 

the embargoed Sudan and other 

previous orders. The result was a 

complete Strikemaster without a 

set construction number or date. 

Strikemaster Mk.82A ‘425’ was 

born, with the airframe taking 

on its military identity as its 

construction number. 

It commenced service with 

1 Sqn. based at RAFO Masirah, 

alongside the Air Force’s other 

Strikemaster airframes and 

remained in service until 1999. It 

was acquired by UK-based North 

Wales Military Aviation Services 

in 2004, restored and returned to 

the air on the airshow circuit.

MIG 15 

‘RED 18’ 

This Polish-built MiG- 

15UTI was produced in 

1952 and is operated by 

the Norwegian Air Force 

Historical Squadron as 

a representative of the 

Cold War ‘enemy’. 

The prototype MiG-15 first flew in 

1947 and was series produced in the 

USSR between 1949 and 1959, with 

some 18,000 built. Following its end of 

service with the Polish Air Force in 1990, 

the aircraft you see today was exported 

to the USA. The aircraft did only a few 

flights when in the US and was 

shipped back to Europe in 2014. 

The MiG-15 is well known for its 

role in the Korean War – a conflict 

which also involved Royal Navy 

operated Hawker Sea Furies. 

Piloted by Lieutenant Peter 

‘Hoagy’ Carmichael, one such 

Sea Fury FB11 made history 

when it downed a MiG-15; one 

of the very few times when 

a piston-engined aircraft 

has gained superiority 

over a jet.

SCOUT 


Since 1980 the Army Historic Aircraft Flight 

(AHAF) have been allowed to maintain 

one example of each aircraft operated 

since the Army Air Corps (AAC) inception 

in 1957, in order to preserve the AAC’s 

aviation heritage. 

Today the Historic Aircraft Flight Trust (HAFT), 

based in Hampshire, bring the XT131 – Agusta- 

Bell Sioux AH Mk1 (G-CICN) and XT626 Westland 

Scout AH Mk1 (G-CIBW) to Eastbourne Air Show. 

Now both are on the civil register, they are flown 

by Army qualified pilots on a voluntary basis 

and can occasionally be seen ground running 

at Middle Wallop as part of the maintenance 

program to ensure that oils run through the 

system and that no leaks have developed. 

The aircraft are restricted to 50 hours a year. 

The airshow display circuit has missed 

seeing the AAC historic aircraft over the 

last couple of years, with the aircraft on 

the civil register and a new trust in place, 

the future looks very secure for these 

valuable, historic and rare aircraft.

tandem two-seat 

aircraft, designed in 

Germany three years 

ago as a comfortable 

touring machine. 

Over 1000 sold worldwide. 

Autogyro, Gyroplane, Gyrocopter, Gyro 

– call them what you like, they’re fun to 

fly and great to watch on display. 

This aircraft is a flying windmill/ 

rotating parachute - think of a sycamore 

seed gently floating down as it spins! 

The rotor blades are completely free 

wheeling in flight, being driven solely 

by the air going up through the rotor 

disk. There is no mechanical drive to 

the rotors in flight, the phenomenon of 

autorotation drives them. Once airborne 

the rotors look after themselves 

and keep spinning, even if the 

airspeed indicator is showing zero! 

Autogyro’s were invented by 

Juan de la Cierva, only 20 years after 

the Wright Brothers first flight. They 

marked a departure from conventional 

fixed wing aircraft in an attempt to 

invent an aircraft that couldn’t stall. 

DID YOU KNOW? 

The name autogiro was a trade 

name for Cierva’s make of 

aircraft. They were the first rotary 

wing aircraft to fly successfully 

under full, safe control. 


TEAM 

RAVEN 

Team Raven is a formation 

aerobatic display team 

that formed in May 2014. 

The Ravens use Van’s RV aircraft 

with a mix of one RV4 as the lead 

aircraft and five RV8s. Entirely 

self-funded, the team has striven 

to create a professional and 

effective display to showcase 

to you today at Eastbourne 

Air Show. 

The team name ‘Raven’ came 

from a play on the letters ‘RV’ 

and makes more sense if written 

‘RaVen’ as per the badge on the 

sides of the aircraft fuselages. 

All aircraft on display are self 

built aircraft, albeit only Ravens 2 

and 4 have been self built by the 

team. They are all of aluminium 

construction and use standard 

Lycoming io-360, 180hp engines 

coupled to constant speed 

propellers, which given their light 

weight, results in an agreeable 

power to weight ratio. They 

are fully aerobatic with a 

decent ‘g’-limit range and 

have been modifiedwith 

smoke systems.

S2S - his ‘Muscle Biplane’! 

G-EWIZ has been specially modified 

to provide the ultimate biplane for air 

show entertainment. It might look 

like a Pitts Special but the aircraft’s 

extensive modification programme 

has given this biplane, the aptly 

registered G-EWIZ, enhanced 

capabilities which allow Rich to 

perform a unique and extraordinary 

brand of aerobatics where high 

energy gyroscopic forces have 

been combined with aerobatic 

manoeuvres to produce a very 

dynamic routine. 

Watch this special biplane 

hover like a Harrier, perform 

double-hammerheads and 

the amazing Tower of Power, 

complete torque rolls, 

backwards flight and highalpha 

knife-edge flypasts! 

The original Pitts first 

flew in 1945. G-EWIZ is a 

Pitts S2S, one of only 30

FIREFLIES 

The FireFlies Aerobatic Display Team will 

be performing two special displays at this 

year’s Air Show. An afternoon display 

featuring close formation aerobatics, 

opposition and synchro work with 

white smoke filling the sky, and a fully 

aerobatic dusk display, with the use 

of pyrotechnics to create a truly 

unique spectacle. 

The Fireflies consist of two Vans RV4 aircraft 

flown by Pilots Jon Gowdy and Andy Durston. 

The Van’s series of sport aircraft are the most 

successful line of build-it-yourself kit planes. 

Well over 9,000 RV’s have taken to the skies 

around the world and the RV4’s that the 

team fly are a development of the original, 

single seat RV3. 

Weighing in at an empty weight of 

approximately 500kg the RV4 is fitted 

with a 5.3 Litre 160HP engine giving 

it performance like a hot-rod. Normal 

cruising speed is about 160 mph but 

during the display the Fireflies make 

the most of the entire flight envelope 

and will be travelling at everything 

from zero to over 200mph.

Twister aircraft. 

The team, led 

by Peter Wells, 

are very versatile 

performing daytime 

aerial ballets and 

unique evening 

displays with specially 

developed pyrotechnic 

effects and are the 

only formation team 

in Europe performing 

this style of display. On 

Sunday 20th August you 

will be able to witness the 

acclaimed pyro display in the 

skies above Eastbourne ahead 

of the firework finale! As well 

as the wingtip pyrotechnics, 

the aircraft also feature high 

powered spot lamps to illuminate 

the display smoke and coloured 

LEDs along the aircraft fuselage. 

The Silence Twister started life as 

a world beating radio controlled 

aerobatic machine simply known as 

the Twister. It had been developed 

by Matthias and Thomas Strieker in 

Germany and was so successful that 

they decided to build a “real” version 

of the model.

equally exciting commentary.

The Tigers seniority stems 

from the Tangier Regiment of 

1661 thus having the distinction 

of being the senior English Infantry 

Regiment of the line.

The display team was formed in 1986 

and originally named ‘The Flying 

Dragons’, a legacy that still continues 

to this day, with many members of 

the Regiment choosing to refer to 

the team as ‘The Flying Tigers’.

Memory Lane is a registered Charity set up 

to provide social activities for people with 

dementia and their carers to attend together. 

They provide facilities for recreation or other

social welfare with the object of improving the 

conditions of life of people with dementia (and 

other associated conditions). 

The Charles Hunt Centre is a good cause 

based in Hailsham, providing activities and 

support for the over 55’s. 

Donation points are located across the event 

site (see map on page 6 for locations) plus 

Rotary and EHA Volunteers will be walking 

ready to collect your kind donations. 

Thank you to Don Perman and Steve Newman 

who are co-ordinating the bucket collections 

this year, with Eastbourne, Sovereign Harbour 

and Hailsham Rotary Clubs, whose members 

are also providing much needed support. 

Our thanks also go to Southern Railway for 

their support in adding Eastbourne Station
