<strong>PEDIATRIC</strong> <strong>ALLERGY</strong> <strong>is</strong> a <strong>sub<strong>specialty</strong></strong><br />

<strong>within</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>specialty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>allergy</strong>.<br />

Children are different from adults in many respects. Children cannot always express what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

feel and many parents are not familiar with what are <strong>the</strong> <strong>allergy</strong> symptoms that <strong>the</strong>y should look<br />

for, hence many allergic d<strong>is</strong>eases go unrecognized in children. Allergy can be very d<strong>is</strong>ruptive to<br />

children lives and to <strong>the</strong>ir lives as adults, by hindering <strong>the</strong> child’s ability to function as a normal<br />

adult in a competitive world.<br />

Allergic d<strong>is</strong>eases in children can lead to serious and long lasting consequences such as:<br />

• Frequent respiratory infections, bronchit<strong>is</strong> and pneumonias<br />

• Frequent ear, nose and throat infections<br />

• Unnecessary removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> adenoids and tonsils<br />

• Loss <strong>of</strong> hearing<br />

• Speech defects<br />

• Learning d<strong>is</strong>abilities<br />

• Poor performance and low grade in school<br />

• Importantly, asthma, which <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> most common allergic d<strong>is</strong>ease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs in children,<br />

can and frequently does endanger <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> many children and alter <strong>the</strong>ir quality <strong>of</strong> life<br />

and learning ability in school.<br />

Dr. Shawky A. Hassan serves as our Pediatric Allerg<strong>is</strong>t in addition to taking care <strong>of</strong> <strong>allergy</strong><br />

problems in adults. In addition to h<strong>is</strong> Board certification in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Allergy and Clinical<br />

Immunology as a special<strong>is</strong>t to take care <strong>of</strong> all allergic d<strong>is</strong>eases <strong>of</strong> both adults and children, he<br />

received additional training and postgraduate education in Pediatrics. He <strong>is</strong> also certified by <strong>the</strong>


American Board <strong>of</strong> Pediatrics. He <strong>is</strong> familiar with <strong>the</strong> growth and development patterns <strong>of</strong><br />

children, which can be seriously affected by allergies. He served for many years in teaching<br />

pediatrics and pediatric <strong>allergy</strong> to medical students, interns, residents and fellows.<br />
