I had the pleasure of attending the book signing last Saturday, March 3rd at Just Fabulous! of author Geoffrey Mark’s fascinating new centennial birthday edition of ELLA, a biography of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald. Red Gurry Mark has spent the past 25+ years painstakingly researching the life, loves and musical passions of the “First Lady of Song” - working closely with family, friends and the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. Attendees were serenaded by Mark, who sang several Ella classics. In between the songs he told riveting stories about Ella, her life and music. His back story of how Ella came to win two of her 13 Grammy Awards for the 1960 live recording Ella in Berlin, and for her single of “Mack the Knife,” were highlights of his presentation. Ella also won two more of her Grammys at the first Grammy Awards held in 1958; as well as the first ASCAP Award in 1965, a Peabody Award in 1983, the 1988 NAACP Image Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1988 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom honor in 1992. ELLA is Geoffrey Mark’s 4th book. His previous works include the best-seller Robert and Carol Teitelbaum
